Flea is asking us all to get out of our own way, and if you’re looking for joy it's hiding behind gratitude. To be kind and gentle when you look within, to make friends with parts of yourself you've been at war with. Then when it's time, to play it forward and turn your passion into purpose. I love his gentle soul.

Easy to say when you achieved complete autonomy over your life. Most people can not "choose" to give a closer look because they never get the time needed to question their own bitterness. It just keeps on riling up. I do agree that being grateful does help immensly though. But it is not as profound and omnipotent as you might think.

flea is bursting at the seams with life and passion. i genuinely believe he's one of the best, most pure, good, people ever to have lived, and certainly on this timeline- i've said that for years; he just exudes good. he's so profoundly graceful for the life he worked so hard for, also to be alive at all, and is an eternal student, despite being a master of his instrument. a wise, beautiful, endlessly curious, soul. truly rare. i'd give anything to meet and just chat with him one day.

As the years go by the more i discover about "Flea" the more i love him.
Such a humble man, even after all that massive success and renown. He is in every sense "living the dream". Everyone has their ups and downs, but he has the right mindset to just focus on the next happy thing, learn from the past but focus on the now. Live in the moment.
And still, he thrives on looking at other people. Impressed by others skills and knowledge, always intrigued to learn and better himself.
I am a totally different person, but in so many ways exactly the same as him with the same drive and will to live in the "now", the same excitement of others exceptional skills. I'm 49 years old and still learning and yearning.
Imho he has what most people dream of. He works with one of his passions and on the meantime he can work on his other passions due to his success....and always being ever humble about it.

Flea's sickness, ailments, depression and trauma after getting sober is commonly known as PAWS (Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome). It's a real thing. I quit drinking and using in 2010. After 90 days in inpatient treatment I remember the isolation, fear, anger, panic attacks, debilitating depression, tears and shame that continued for over three years. I went to AA/NA meetings everyday and was going to a psychologist twice a week. Thank you for sharing this with us.

14:40 I love what flea is talking about here. Not all meditation is blissful. The uncovering work is deep. Saw him at summer solstice celebration. I was a few years deep into both bass and meditation, living with uncut hair and beard at an ashram. I let him be, after we gazed at each other for a bit, though I desperately wanted to talk shop about music 🙏

Many years ago in Santa Barbara, Ted Danson and his beautiful wife were sitting directly behind me at a Ray Lamontagne concert. There was a very stoned super fan of sorts dancing wildly in the aisle nearby who kept shouting “EVERY TIME! EVERY TIME!” after each song. Eventually after several rounds of this, I heard Ted shout “Every other time!” and I couldn’t stop laughing

Conan - I had no idea you were expanding your team like this. This was one of the best podcasts I’ve heard in quite a while, with some real pearls of wisdom and self help and love from the great Flea and Ted Danson (Woody rocks too). I’ll be keeping my eye out for the “Where Everybody Knows Your Name” podcast from now on - which is also one of the dopest podcast titles with such perfection of meaning and use of pun behind the former Cheers alums. I used to watch that show every week. Congrats Conan!

The painting Flea was talking about is Saturn Devouring his Children. Saturn was the leader of the Titans, the elder gods, and hears a prophecy that his child will dethrone him to rule the universe (just as he dethroned his own father Uranus) so out of madness driven by fear and jealousy, he begins eating them. When his sixth child Jupiter is born, his wife disguises the child as a stone so he swallows the stone. His stomach upset by the stone, he vomits up his other children. Jupiter eventually dethrones him and he and his brothers and sisters become the first generation of the newer, Olympian gods.
When Goya painted this, the Spanish Inquisition still loomed large, and one interpretation is that it could respresent the mad insanity of the church persecuting members of their own congregations (often called children) out of thier fear of losing power. Something that was already happening in Goyas lifetime with the secularization of governments during the American and French Revolutions.
It fits so perfectly into this conversation about emotional and spiritual struggle, and setting aside fear and ego, I just had to share.
