Kia EV6 Vehicle to Load Tested & Explained

  • I tested the Kia EV6 Vehicle-to-Load (aka V2L) with several appliances and electronic devices. What happens if you exceed the power limit? How do you reset the V2L and AC outlet? Can you use the V2L port at the same time as the interior 110V AC outlet? All of these things and more are shown in this video and should also apply to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 V2L feature since they are essentially the same, technologically speaking.
    ***IMPORTANT NOTE: When I mention buying the V2L adapter on the Kia and Hyundai Canada Website, I meant at the dealership. Prices mentioned were based on Facebook posts from people in Canada who bought the Hyundai V2L adapter at a dealership. Also to note, you should call multiple dealers because some say it is not stock, but others have the adapter in inventory; this is also based on some user anecdotes.

    André Laurence, thank you so much for your videos on the Kia EV6, V2L. Great job on all of that! It really helps those of us with RV’s see we are slowly getting to the place with EV cars and trucks to eventually power the RVs for days of dry camping. Even the RVs are slowly heading in the electric mode and eventually will help increase the driving range. Your overload reset tests are good to know nothing in the EV6 will be destroyed just need resetting. If we are doing one or two things at time, we can do most of what we need. The trucks like Ford F150 EV and Chevy Silverado EV will do more and still a learning curve there too. You are also showing us how to successfully create and share RUclips videos with helpful information in a format that many people really appreciate, as seen in their replies to you. Great job on that as it’s not an easy formula to find, and you have found the formula and doing a great job at it!

    Let me start by saying I really appreciate your videos and that you share the out takes, it demonstrates that time and effort that goes into making a video that appears flawless. So, after experiencing 45 hours of no electricity due to our recent ice storm ( I’m in the Laval area) I’m curious just how efficient the v2l would be to power some of the essentials ie fridge, freezer, small heater, etc…were you in a similar position or have you had the chance to try this?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +2

      I am glad you like my videos and yes, they do take a fair amount of time to make. Not everyone realizes that so I appreciate your comment. As for the V2L, I was fortunate where I did not lose power so I did not need to run anything on it. If I was required to do so, I would have plugged in my main refrigerator first to get it past the initial power draw, then I would have tried the second refrigerator to see if the overall load was more than 1900W. I think 2 refrigerators would work if connected with a delay between the two, but it will depend on the age and type, and have to be tested to really know. Once up and running I would expect them to run for 2 or 3 days without issue.

    At the beginning, you mention that if you've got the GT Pack 1 or lower, you'll need to buy the adapter to use V2L. I just want to make sure I'm super clear on that. I'm considering an EV6, but feel I'm being forced to get Pack 2 so that I can get V2L functionality. Do the other trim levels have the circuitry and software in place, just not the adapter? Can I buy a lower level trim, get the adapter separately, and get V2L functionality?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +2

      From what I have read, all EV6 trims have the ability to do V2L, but in Canada the trims that are below the GT Line Pack 2 do not include the adapter so you have to buy it.
      Just an FYI in case you were not aware, there are several differences between the Pack 1 and Pack 2, not just the missing V2L adapter.
      Pack 1 has:
      - 19" Wheels instead of 20"
      - Manual door handles, not automatic
      - No sunroof
      - 6 speaker sound system instead of Meridian 14 speaker with sub
      - Missing active sound design
      - Synthetic leather seats
      - No HUD
      - No V2L adapter
      - No heated rear seats
      - No cooled front seats
      - No cargo cover
      I hope this helps.

      @@JonathanRootDI agree, it is not very clear and I think that is on purpose. On the Kia Canada site the EV6 GT Line Pack 2 (like mine) shows V2L as an included technology option, but the Pack 1 does not, and I know for a fact that the Pack 1 has V2L capability because of other owners who have bought the adapter. I am not sure about the US, but I am fairly confident that Kia did not go to the trouble of removing the V2L technology that is deeply integrated in the charging and battery infrastructure of the vehicle, for lower trims.

    In the UK we have the option of dual tarrif electricity rates, I have an EV tariff with 10p/ kWh 2am-6am, and 40p otherwise. I could use my car as a powerwall! Do you have such tariffs in North America?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +2

      There are different rates depending on the province. Here in the province of Québec we have the least expensive electricity at 10 cents per kWh, taxes included, all the time and 99% of it is renewable energy. Hydro Québec does, however, have a program called Flex D and I am on it. In the winter months I have a rate of 5 cents per kWh, unless we are in a predetermined peak period where the rate climbs to 50 cents per kWh. The nice thing is that Hydro Québec advises us of the peak period the day before. Peak periods can only be from 6am to 9am and 4pm to 8pm, and the peak advisory from Hydro Québec can be for either time period of the day, or both, with a maximum of 100 peak hours accumulated in the winter season (start and end dates are determined by Hydro Québec). I have been in the top Flex program for a couple of years and we save about 200$ per winter because I have programmed our heating to drop in the peak periods, we don't run the washer, dryer, dishwasher, etc, during those periods, and we only charge our cars during off hours.

      I don't think Hyundai will implement any software changes for the charging curve, but I may be mistaken. What they could do is add battery preconditioning for the winter, which would make a huge difference in charging when it is cold. The 2023 Ioniq 5 will get it, the Genesis GV60 will have it, and I hope Kia and Hyundai put out a software update for the 2022 EV6 and Ioniq 5 to add it since it is the same hardware.

      @@EV-olution Yeah. Winter charging can be terrible for the kona. There is some pre-heating of the battery through "winter mode" though? But its not nearly enough.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад

      Unfortunately the Niro EV, Soul EV, Kona Electric, etc, only use the battery heater (winter mode) when plugged in, so it takes time to be of use and takes power that could be used to charge the battery. That is why preconditioning would be excellent.

    Can you put a standard extension lead with a plug straight in to the port and switch V2L on in the car .ie make your own extension in to the charge port , or do you need the adapter ?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  10 месяцев назад +2

      Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was away on vacation. The V2L adapter is required because the charge port on electric cars is not a regular electrical outlet. The V2L adapter is just an adapter though, the car also has to have the technology built-in for the feature to work like shown in the video. You cannot use the V2L adapter on an EV that does not have V2L capability; it won't work. I hope this helps.

    My 110 outlet only works if the V2L is connected and turned on. Kia Dealership here in America said thats the proper way for it to work.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +3

      If we use that reasoning it would mean that the 110V outlet is useless to rear passengers who may need it while someone is driving, of if you are parked an need to plug in a device, like a laptop. Unless the programming has been changed, that is not how it works. As mentioned in the video, if you power on the car and plug in a device to the 110V outlet inside the car, it should work. If the car is powered off, then the inside 110V outlet will only work if the V2L adapter is plugged in and turned on.

    Can the V2l not give up to 3600 watt?

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +1

      Not in North America where it is a 110V outlet. In Europe it is a 240V that offers the 3600W, but in Europe you can't use the V2L at the same time as the interior outlet.

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  Год назад +3

      @@xzibit8614 CNET and Electrek are incorrect. I am not the only one to test this and in North America it peaks at 1900W. Once you pass 1900W the "breaker" cuts the circuit, as my kettle+toaster test show. There is another RUclipsr who has a video where he measures the power and he also gets a 1900W maximum (see link below). Only the European 240V V2L offers 3500W and in that version you can only use the external V2L plug, you can't use the inside outlet at the same time, which is not the case for North America. This was confirmed by a viewer from the UK who uses their V2L for camping and told me that the outlet inside the car is disabled when using the 240V V2L.
      Here is a link to the video that uses a power tester to show the max power load for the North American V2L: ruclips.net/video/ffYY6j8Ozq0/видео.html

    • @EV-olution
      @EV-olution  2 года назад +2

      I thought the same thing until having and testing it. I will definitely be using it often when I go camping. Another use I found, here in Québec and Ontario there were severe storms that took out power for several days in many regions and because of my video I received several messages saying that people were powering devices and refrigerators to help people out. Most EVs today have long range capabilities, 400km to 500km, and offer very fast charging speeds, which makes other features a focus point for many people. I hope this helps.
