    The A7c has greatly exceeded my expectations as a travel/everyday camera, and paired with the Samyang 35mm f/2.8 makes for the lightest full frame option out there.

    the way she differentiated each camera in a simpler way is the best, she did not had to really say all the technical aspects of each model. great job Julia! because of that, I am now gonna get the a7c because I am not a pro and just need a good camera that I can bring daily for content creation. I do not even need to do pro work.

    I'm 6'1 and I find the A7C plenty comfortable, I'm admittedly not shooting continuously for hours. I mainly use my camera for family and travel photography and it was a perfect transition from my Fuji X100. I really stayed away from FF cameras because they always just felt so big and cumbersome. The A7C is just a slightly heavier APS-C body but with the advantage of Sony's incredible FF glass. I mostly have it paired with the 24 1.4 GM and 85mm 1.8 and I can fit these both in a Hex mini ranger cross body. It really is in my opinion the best compromise for hobbyists looking for a great walk around camera. Is the A7IV a "better" camera...sure. Is it the best camera for me though, no I don't think so.

    Sold A7C and got A7IV - no regrets. Finally, workable APS-C mode if needed. Dual card, 10 bit, WAY better autofocus, Active Stab, Dedicated switch between Stills and Movies for run-and-gun shoots. And the list is going on.

    The A7c is honestly my favorite camera I've owned. I was nervous about giving up external dials, but there are plenty of options for custom setup to overcome that. With a smaller lens (I prefer the 35/2.8 ZA), it's just a hair bigger than pocketable. I head out the door with it every day.
    Something of an aside worth mentioning- vintage lenses. The A7c is so awesome for adapting old lenses. They're typically much smaller than today's offerings, so pairing them with the A7c form factor makes for an absolutely perfect shooting experience. Focus peaking + magnify + ISO performance.. it's a manual super powered setup.

  • @dawsonrpowell
    @dawsonrpowell 2 года назад +12

    Great comparison video, and I know it's meant to be quick, but I think quite a few important differences were missed. As Julia said, the a7c does have fewer designated custom buttons, but there are still several buttons you can customize. The big difference is in the number of dials. The a7c has two (if you count the back dial) plus an EV dial. the a7IV has three dials plus and a customizable EV dial for a total of four dials. As a manual shooter the EV dials on my a7c and a7sIII see little action, and I'd love to be able to have them control white balance instead. The mode dial on the a7IV is better as well, allowing you to have separate camera settings for video and photos. Switching between video and photo modes on the a7c affects the settings on both modes, which is a real pain. Also the menu system on the a7IV is much better than the a7c, and uses touch navigation.
    The a7c has characteristics that suit me better personally. As a left-eye shooter I prefer the rangefinder body. Also while the grip is shallower, I find it to be more comfortable, secure, and stable with a handstrap than the a7sIII/a7IV style body without one. The a7c is a great, less expensive option if you don't need any of the specific features of the a7IV and are planning to use the smaller f1.8 or f2.8 primes or f4 zooms. The a7c is a good choice for someone jumping from aps-c bodies to full frame, but the a7IV may be better suited for people upgrading from an older full frame camera.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 года назад +7

      Thank you and yes I agree, I LOVE that they made the EV dial fully customisable on the A7IV - I have it set to a white balance shortcut. The settings staying the same between photo and video mode I agree can be a bit cumbersome. But I do prefer the mode dial of the A7C that has video and M right next to each other compared to the A7III where it's a few clicks away from each other instead, so I'm glad they improved on that. Also the menu! That's a tough one because I know the new menu is kinda better but I have the old one memorised so it throws me off using the new one on the A7IV haha I've spent 3 years with the old menu on the A7III =\

    If you have A7c, do remember to update the firmware. Sony has brought down some features from A7IV to A7c, such as animal eye AF in video and USB streaming, so there is even less reason to upgrade to A7IV. Despite having similar spec with A7iii on paper, the autofocus on A7c is a noticable step up, there is not much between A7c and A7IV. All that convince me that there is a more optimised and powerful processor in A7c when compare to A7iii.

    This was a great comparison. I was leaning towards the A7C up until about a week ago and am now considering the A7IV. The A7C is 2 years older, and since the price has not changed much since it was introduced, it seems likes the A7IV for the additional $$ os a more future proof camera with the updated sensor, true touch screen, dual slot and better hold especially with longer telephoto lenses.

    I thought I would love the A7C for the compact size, but for me it just didn’t feel right. The grip was uncomfortable and I have pretty small hands, the viewfinder was very limiting and I really missed that front dial. The worst thing, I found was unless you were only buying really small lenses everything else looked and felt really off balance. Recently used a Fuji x100t to take snaps at a friend's bday. The casual look and small size really set people at ease. The pics were great but they really fell apart at iso6400. I'd be happy to have an a7C mkii which has a better evf and a 1/8000 shutter speed instead of 1/4000 shutter speed. A FF is just so much better for low light and the images are super crisp in comparison.

    I would like to see more photo comparation for different types of photos like macro, wide angle landscape, portrait, indoor, or low light. I bought a7C and tried it for a couple of weeks doing all that and was very disappointed in the quality of photos I got (compare to my older spny cameras that I was shooting for comparation - older sony hands off got me better looking photos, especially dynamic range, auto-focus (and auto-focus tracking, close up/macro), level of details (especially in low light, but even with ISO 100 it was unimpressive). Sony a7c was a HUGE disappointment for me as a sony fan. I never had to return Sony camera before (And Im using Sony for the last 8 years and own multiple cams). So now I'm hesitant to buy sony a7IV because some people say its very similar to a7c (which is something I don't want)

    I’m confused now. I have an A7c, which I thought always uses the mechanical shutter unless disabled (setting the silence mode). Then, in electronic mode it can go up to 1/8000 shutter speed. But maybe I’m wrong.

    • @philipau3847
      @philipau3847 2 года назад +2

      What she meant is that the A7C doesn't have a mechanical front curtain shutter so the electronic front curtain (EFCS) is always on. The advantage of using EFCS is it mitigates shutter shock. The only disadvantages of having the EFCS is slower flash sync speed and bokeh quality at shutter speeds of fster than 1/2000. Banding under artificial lights is not an issue (unlike full electronic shutter)

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 года назад +2

      Yes to what Philip responded! Unlike cameras such as the A7III/A7IV, the A7C does not have a mechanical first curtain - only a rear mechanical curtain. So even when using the mechanical shutter on the A7C, you do have limitations with artificial lighting and fast motion due to the missing mechanical first curtain.

  • @Linealo
    @Linealo 2 года назад

    I think the choice here is really dependent on the money and the needs (Video excluded in this reasoning).
    The features of the A7C definitely sounded interesting to even those with an A7III (or looking at either of those two when buying new), but the missing wheels, buttons, card slot and having a generally higher price already made it a hard choice when we didn't even had the A7IV yet. The newer AF and jpg engine also stand out compared to the A7III, but also lack behind the A7IV. The menus not even to mention (though I never found them to be too awful to use).
    Those are the things most casual users will see most of and thus care about: accessibility and pleasing images out of automatic mode... + price.
    Since comparing the A7C vs the A7III was already a close battle with head to head trade-offs, the A7IV is definitely the "better" choice, but maybe not the more affordable or smart one. This shifts for power users of course, where the priority of the factors shift.
    So all well explained and glad to see this reflected review / comparison! Definitely helps those less into tech and gear details.

    The grip statement doesn't make any sense , using a7c grip is super convenient when you want to hold something you just hold it, also the extra detail 34 megapixel is a great comparison sticking out for the a7c

    You can shoot in a7c 1/8000 you just have to change over to silent shutter which for outdoor use where you would need that fast of a shutter isn’t a problem. 😬 FYI

    • @Rajiv27
      @Rajiv27 2 года назад

      So when you are not in silent shutter mode, the a7c uses mechanical shutter?

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  2 года назад

      Unlike cameras such as the A7III/A7IV, the A7C does not have a mechanical first curtain - only a rear mechanical curtain. So even when using the mechanical shutter on the A7C, you do have limitations with artificial lighting and fast motion due to the missing mechanical first curtain.

    I haven't made my purchase yet, but your video helped me a lot to get a better idea of what to choose. I want it for educational construction and daily use, and the budget I want to allocate is enough to buy the A7C with the Tamron 28-75 G2 lens, but if I want to buy the A7 IV , I can only have the 28-70mm (default kit lens), and that's me Very confused. The single SD card slot in the a7C makes it hard to consider. I'd rather have an a7 III even though it doesn't have the real-time tracking. Obviously, the a7 IV is just better in every way, but it's more expensive and not even really available on the used market yet.
