Remember this was a Saturday Morning cartoon and they had the bad guy off a character that was on the show from the beginning. Darkseid always has a favortism towards Orion because he slightly respects Orion has a spine unlike Kalibak he may see Orion as his enemy but its more he admires that the son he fights against isn’t a kiss ass like the son at his side. Orion unless you’re a comic book fan you wouldn’t know who he is when he shows up you know he’s at least an alien by the way he looks you’d never suspect that he was the son of someone so evil. As for his Omega Beams the lasers he shoots from his eyes Darkseid can either transport people anywhere he wishes or destroy them outright if he chooses Mannheim and Kalibak had purpose so he let them live but Turpin defied and insulted him and to break the hope of the people he had Turpin killed.
Even as a dictator, darkseid respects strength and opposition. Which is why even in the superfriends show he wanted diana as a queen, and in later shows as the head of his furies, etc.
For a while, I wasn't sure if Turpin was dead, as he was zapped in similar fashion to Kalibak in "Father's Day". But nope, he gone. And I could tell from your appreciation of him at the start of this episode that his death was gonna affect you big. This was the season finale, BTW. I don't know if HBO Max mentions that.
Jack "The King" Kirby is one of the seminal, most important artists in American comic book history. All those Marvel GOATS like Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic 4, Avengers, X-Men, Black Panther and so many more - he's the man who designed what they look like. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby built what Marvel is today. He also made The New Gods for DC - that's the whole pantheon from New Genesis and Apokolips. Ironically, the whole Fourth World and New Gods series flopped at launch and gained prominence and relevance later.
Spiderman wasn't one of Kirby's, that was Steve Ditko, but yeah Kirby was probably one of the most important and influential creators in the history of both major comic companies.
Spiderman wasn't one of Kirby's. That was Steve Ditko. But yeah, Lirby was one of the most important and influential creators for both major companies.
Orion is one of those character i kinda want to learn more about, i know he sometimes falls victim to being written as basicaly the worst of the New Gods because he is Darkseid's son, but i always love when they show him as somebody who struggles with his parentage and trying to be better than his father (also, i don't think this comes up in the show, but Orion's face actually looks more like Darkseid's, he just disguises it using Motherbox)
NEAT FACT: Jack Kirby who created the New Gods originally wanted these gods to be a reincarnation of the Norse Gods from Marvel. After Ragnarok, a New cycle would begin anew, and create the New gods, and the 9 realms, would become just Apokalypse and New Genesis. But Marvel did not want to kill of Thor. So he took his idea to DC and the rest is history. This explains Orion's red hair BTW. In Norse mythology Thor supposed to have red firey hair, not blond. so Orion is technically a reincarnation of the Proto-Indo-European God, Perkwunos(Donnor, Thor). High Father is a reincarnation of odin the All father. The Furies are a reincarnted Valkyries, Baldur became Lightray, Surtur and Loki became Darkseid, Lady Sif became Big Barda, Malekith became Desaad, Mimir became Metron, etc etc. At the time, the New Gods were very successful and influenced many creatives. George Lucas for instance took ideas from it and created some Star Wars lore: -"Darkseid" became "The Dark Side" -"The Source" became "The Force" -and the reveal that Orion was Darkseid's son is similar to the reveal that Darth Vader (literally meaning Dark Father) was Luke Sky Walker's son. Darth Vader is even burnt over his body like Darkseid.
This is an example of why Superman often winds up *HATING* Darkseid, like "driven to murderous rage" levels of hatred, because Darkseid will always try to take from you, even if you have some sort of victory, he'll sour it by killing your friend
@@wolfmantheimpaler I remember him jokingly saying in the interview, "You can talk about any other Superman villain, and he'll be fine, but mention Darkseid, and he'll instantly get grouchy". Sounds simply true to be honest LOL.
Joker and Darkseid are 100% pure evil actually. Lex and Brainiac on the other hand have been shown to have nuance, especially Lex. Talking about their comic book versions specifically.
Today was a difficult day for me so I am not up for watching this at the moment. It is tradgic but epic and I am sure I will appreciate your reaction when I am ready. I remember how your opinion on Dan went from bad to good in a previous episode just like mine did and now this happens. Darkseid really is an ultimate villian even when he is forced to back down he still makes it feel like we lost big time. I know this quote has already been repeated but it deserves to be repeated many more times! "Goodbye, old friend. In the end the world didn't need a "Superman". Just a brave one." One normal man can make a difference no matter how hopeless it seems and that is a GREAT lesson to apply to modern life!
Jack Kirby like Dan Turpin was an American hero, he was a ww2 vet and a survivor of D-day, when his commanders learned he was a comic artist they made him an army scout and sent him to recon enemy territory and draw maps of the areas for them. He was the king of comics, and a truly great man, my favorite story about him is how the inkers for his comics would get pissed at him because he made their jobs more difficult by drawing in minute details to his pictures which added hours of extra coloring for them to do.
Dan’s death came out of nowhere and his funeral is so sad. Even Superman’s quote is so heartbreaking “Goodbye Old Freind. In the end, the world didn’t need a ‘Superman’, just a *brave* one” That line is both brilliant and tragic and both Tim Daly delivers it with such real emotion. The writing in these shows is just so intelligent and so well structured. It makes you wonder why this level of care wasn’t carried over to The DCEU. The DCAU in my humble opinion is the greatest adaptation of The DC Universe outside of the comics. I mean The show runners had serious BALLS to kill of a character, especially a main character like Dan Turpin, in a cartoon. It’s another reason why the DCAU is so good, because it didn’t treat its target audience like babies, I’m looking at you Teen Titans Go, it really has some dark and serious moments that aren’t for children. I love when shows like these teach its audience a lesson or shows them that Superheroes can tell great stories and have relatable characters
I was 16 when this aired. Turpin's death blew my mind. I still tear up every time i the piano music plays at the funeral after the rabbi says the "Mourner's Kaddish." This was peak 90s animation and writing. Dan Turpin was one of many characters created by Jack Kirby. His visual likeness in this show was based on Jack Kirby. I hoped that he was just teleported away, like others had been in the past. But nope...
“The brave died with the cunning. The noble perished, locked in battle with unleashed evil. It was the last day for them. An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust.” To this day, still the single greatest page in comic history. Jack Kirby’s limitless imagination was only rivaled by his remarkable talent. There will never be another. That said, the work Phillip Kennedy Johnson has been doing to expand the cosmic mythos in the DC universe has been so good so far and I can’t wait to see what he has planned next.
RIP Dan Turpin , he was a loud hothead but he had a good heart and he cared for his fellow human beings to his last dying breath and if you can inspire Superman who is known for being the beacon of hope and inspiration then you're definitely at least a alright decent person, also RIP to Jack Kirby truly Long Live the King 👑🙏 🕊️
I literally discovered your reactions to STAS yesterday, looked at the playlist and wondered "When is she gonna reach Apokolips Now"?. Prayers answered.
This is why Darksied is the final boss villain of the DC universe because he’s the literal worst! In fact he’s supposed to represent evil and tyranny itself.
They really got as much past the radar in this episode as they could, huh? Blood, mild swearing, an onscreen death, and even an implied lesbian couple.
Unfortunately, they couldn't get much past the network s&p at the time, but yes, that was indeed Maggie's partner (and not in the cop sense). A fact confirmed by the show creatives, and also aligned with the source material. Jack Kirby created the New Gods mythos (Apokolyps, New Genesis...) as well as having co-created various classic Marvel characters before moving over to DC. His face *and* drawing style was the inspiration for Dan Turpin's character design.
They also strongly implied Harley and Ivy were a thing on that one 1993 episode of BTAS that led to them being more explicitly a thing years later when society had progressed enough. DCAU was 'woke'. :)
@@Carn_Is_Done Yeah, it takes only a cursory reading between the lines to see that Ivy spent years trying (to varying degrees of temporary success) to help Harley get over her unhealthy and unrequited Joker obsession because she had a thing for (and sometimes with) her. While not overt by today's standard, the subtext (and innuendo) was remarkably clear for being a cartoon marketed to a young audience at that time, and their current relationship status in the comics and HQ cartoon didn't come out of nowhere.
One of the things I remember from Darkseids first big appearance here is his sheer nonchallantness. He doesn't use his arms to punch immediately like some other villains. He can and will use them if he has to, but he doesn't see it as necessary, even against superman. This is the quintessential version of Darkseid for me because of that. Yeah, and Turbin dying here is just so damn sad... really made me sad when you said you liked him so much, knowing what was coming :(
As much as this version is the definitive Darkseid, I’m kinda disappointed they didn’t do what Jack Kirby always talked about when he invented the New Gods back in the day, where as evil as he is to Orion, he still loves him. As Kirby said, “A (true) father would never hurt his child”
You'd be forgiven for thinking Turpin didn't immediately die from getting hit by the beams, Darkseid's Omega Effect. Just as he angles them in any direction he chooses for however long he chooses, he can also control the intensity and effect. He uses them to transport people, even to resurrect people he's used them to obliterate. But more often than not, they are instant death for anything they hit, aside from Superman and similar powers. I can't recall if Superman has ever been killed by them, but the implication is that given enough time, they'll wear him down. If Darkseid willed it, he could've sent Turpin away or triggered any number of strange effects. But in this case, it was a death to pay for his bitterness over his "defeat"
tom king's Mister Miracle graphic novel is great if you want to learn more about Orion and Darksied and the fourth world. Its also great because it's about existentialism, depression, and suicidal ideation due to parental abuse and how to not repeat the cycle of violence and abandonment that your parents chose but through the lens of a super hero.
The creators originally wanted Darkseid to kill Ma and/or Pa Kent but the studio said if they did they'd have to bring them back and they chose Dan instead so they could have it stick.
I remember that the creators wanted the stakes to be raised because the villain is Darkseid. So they always wanted the end to be someone dies. Of course DC basically said no to all their characters. So the staff went with Turpin because they made him and DC can’t say no. It was also fitting it was for a character who had the same spirit as Jack Kirby. I think a lot of dialogue choices and his looks were supposed to be nods to Kirby? That part I’m unsure about. I just remember the commentary track of this episode gave a lot of insight for what they were thinking of how to do a Darkseid episode.
I definitely recommend reading Jack Kirby's work. Mister Miracle and New Gods are my favorites. Additionally I think the trade "Silver Surfer: When calls Galactus" is a good introduction to his earlier work.
Darkseid was crate by Jack Kriby and at end before took it out had 3 of FF Nick Fury Iron man and Cap all Jack draw we still feel ishis and Dan losse 25 years later.
13:08 It's difficult to say how much or if Darkseid is ever really Orion's father. Darkseid is kind of ridiculous since supposedly there is only one Darkseid with him being an entity that actually knows about the multiverse cause it exists outside of the multiverse. Basically every version of Darkseid that exists in comics, shows, and other media are basically extentions/vessals of that single Darkseid which have been imbued with like a fraction of his true power that it uses to interact with whatever multiverses that vessal exists in.
Amazing reaction ❤❤❤ also a beautiful episode that pays tribute to jack kirby if you read about him he basically the father of comics he creates a lot of marvel characters and also the new gods in DC
I always loved this episode. Not just for the overwhelming amount of emotions at the end; but the tribute to Jack Kirby - a Jew himself - with that Jewish funeral for Turpin. Edit: the dumb RUclips captions have the Rabbi "speaking in a foreign language" smh.
Superman's reaction Is like Goku's reaction when Frieza killed Krillin. (Dragon Ball Z) How Shiryu reacted when Deathmask tried to kill his girlfriend. (Saint Seiya)

The saddest burden of being Superman is that he can't save everyone.
@@sporf_sporf yeah, that slipped in there by mistake. My bad.
I've heard that the Orion series by Walt Simonson was really good.
There is a channel on RUclips call Comic Origins. One of the videos is about Orion.
Glad to see you back with more of Superman and this episode with Apokolips is gonna be great. Have a beautiful week thanks Meg.

Fun fact Steppenwolf is Darkseid’s uncle
For Darkseid, it was Tuesday.
George Lucas for instance took ideas from it and created some Star Wars lore:
-"Darkseid" became "The Dark Side"
-"The Source" became "The Force"
-and the reveal that Orion was Darkseid's son is similar to the reveal that Darth Vader (literally meaning Dark Father) was Luke Sky Walker's son. Darth Vader is even burnt over his body like Darkseid.
Suffice to say, Darkseid plays for keeps.
This is an example of why Superman often winds up *HATING* Darkseid, like "driven to murderous rage" levels of hatred, because Darkseid will always try to take from you, even if you have some sort of victory, he'll sour it by killing your friend
I remember watching an interview where Bruce Timm said of all the villains he has (in the DCAU), Superman easily hates Darkseid more than anyone.
@tornadochaser2457 considering everything Darkseid has done to him, I'm not surprised
Jimmy, seriously, why are you smiling? This is a legit extinction level event going on
He's thinking about the Pulitzer
@charleslee8313 Lol. Like "there's an apocalypse going on, but goddammit, I'm getting my book deal out of this"
Pulitzer, or pulverizing?
No, I believe Jimmy just had faith Superman would stop the bad guys. Jimmy is kind of an optimist.
Needed these episodes today.
Even Superman’s quote is so heartbreaking
“Goodbye Old Freind. In the end, the world didn’t need a ‘Superman’, just a *brave* one”
That line is both brilliant and tragic and both Tim Daly delivers it with such real emotion.
I still tear up every time i the piano music plays at the funeral after the rabbi says the "Mourner's Kaddish."
This was peak 90s animation and writing.
Dan Turpin was one of many characters created by Jack Kirby. His visual likeness in this show was based on Jack Kirby.
I hoped that he was just teleported away, like others had been in the past. But nope...
The lore behind Apokolips is so cool!
"There came a time when the old gods died!"
“The brave died with the cunning. The noble perished, locked in battle with unleashed evil. It was the last day for them. An ancient era was passing in fiery holocaust.”
To this day, still the single greatest page in comic history.
The likeness of Jack Kirby was used for Dan Turpin
I've been waiting for this and this broke my heart again.
22:30 reed richard, sue storm, and nick fury cameo.
I watched this on TV as a kid.I didn't know how emotional was until I got older!!.
Dan Turpin dying always hurts.
Yeah, and Turbin dying here is just so damn sad... really made me sad when you said you liked him so much, knowing what was coming :(
I've been waiting for you to get to this one for awhile.
Seen this a million times and I'm still sobbing.
Superman wanted to avenge his friend but all he can do is put his anger on a left over vehicle until he stops and kneels down as he mourns for Dan :’(
The creators originally wanted Darkseid to kill Ma and/or Pa Kent but the studio said if they did they'd have to bring them back and they chose Dan instead so they could have it stick.
Ah, the episode that solidified Darkseid as my #1 DC villain
Darkseid killing Dan is one of the greatest tributes ever.
Yep he looks just like Jack
13:55 while i enjoy how you interpreteverything THIS noise is amazing literally me when x character is rainbow
Hi Meg, my best friend and I are watching your vlog now! We are looking forward to hearing your reaction!
Michael Ironside is the GOAT.
One of my favorite episodes of the series
I’ve been waiting for this one 🥲
13:08 It's difficult to say how much or if Darkseid is ever really Orion's father.
Darkseid is kind of ridiculous since supposedly there is only one Darkseid with him being an entity that actually knows about the multiverse cause it exists outside of the multiverse.
Basically every version of Darkseid that exists in comics, shows, and other media are basically extentions/vessals of that single Darkseid which have been imbued with like a fraction of his true power that it uses to interact with whatever multiverses that vessal exists in.
I can’t help but picture Darkseid doing Collin Robinson things now 😂
I was in denial when this came out too.
The series takes a deep turn for the gritty at this point.
RIP Dan Turpin
I really hope you continue with Batman Beyond and Justice League.
Orion uses his motherbox to look more human
Amazing reaction ❤❤❤ also a beautiful episode that pays tribute to jack kirby if you read about him he basically the father of comics he creates a lot of marvel characters and also the new gods in DC
Love you Meg
21:53 That's me today. Hopefully the rest of this reaction can help.
Superman's reaction
Is like Goku's reaction when Frieza killed Krillin. (Dragon Ball Z)
How Shiryu reacted when Deathmask tried to kill his girlfriend. (Saint Seiya)
Jack and Stan were legends
Can someone remind me how Orion joins the Justice League in this continuity?
13:57 I had a feeling that would be your reaction to Maggie’s girlfriend 😂
Love The Jack Kirby Like Art In This One
That death scene was pretty jarring to see as a kid, this show was far ahead of its time
I subscribed meg
Darkseid was created by Kirby... the greatest Villain ever... even Thanos was created from Darkseid and metron by Jim Starlin... Kirby was the King... Turpin looked like him and represented him kinda
I know Meg. I figured this episode would leave you, somewhat, speechless. You are starting to see the VALUE of the SUPPORTING CAST of Superman. I could be wrong, but I believe that Kaliback was the other son in the exchange between Darkside and Highfather (just assuming).
No, it's another character. Kalibak is also Darkseid's biological son.
Maggie Sawyer was an has always been gay
Long live the King Jack Kirby : D
I wonder if the other baby is okay the one dark side had to raised
hi MegMage
W colin robinson reference
I got a question Could you do a reaction of the Swat cat series , and would you be interested in doing a reaction to a movie called a x l
19:20 I hate when Superman is forced to be Jesus.
You should definitely react to Super girl. Maggie is a major character and yeah gay
