I think Superman needs to be fixed and this is not coming from an mcu fanboy especially after the fact that I found Endshame to be just awful. But Superman does need to be fixed. Zack Snyder just deconstructed the character of Superman now if it was his version of Superman of a different name and universe than I wouldn't be so against him creating a deconstruction of the archetype. But he and WB used the name of Superman to make money off of him Now one would say that the golden age Superman can't work in modern times which isn't true because Superman is a character that transcends time. Now let's say if that argument was true and that golden age Superman can't work in modern times than why bother making a Superman film if you can't adapt him without changing him?

@UCcxFA25K5mPjW4O_d8tHPkw first I'm very glad that you said that that the iconic doesn't need changing but the realistic grounded superman does go check out nando v movies rewrite of Man of steel it's 4 parts before I start talking about this I'm an mcu Fanboy but I'll say this MCU is flawed I feel like deep down most MCU Fanboys won't admit it anyway I actually liked that door I thought his character Arc was very unique and made him more human same with the hulk I actually didn't find any problem with Natasha stagg I'll admit I didn't expect it but that thing really baffled me or anytingask for Steve Rogers I don't think it really contradicted his character since that's what he always desired if you watch The avengers age of Ultronalthough if you look at his stories they always change with the times but the character stays the same so I can understand that from the comic side but the MCU version not so much I don't know maybe if you gave me more details I would understand

They always think about the other person which is why batman does not kill because he values life
These people went through unimaginable pain and still they kept thier values.
Projecting youre trauma into other people no matter how bad what you went through still makes you a bad person because you think the world revolves around you and that people are inferior to you
Thats why characters like the joker are still considered evil

The only person at DC who I really liked and looks good is Bat Man and Wonder Woman. The look from aside from Bat Man and WW was for me always to boring, and the super powers were never got presented well, but with the new Superman Film and the new Aqua Man Film was the costume cool, but the look from the DC movies were never touched by this so much. Marvel has done much more with a looks, Spider Man has a ass full of costumes, same with Captain America, X Men so on, on, on. Sure we throw around labels claim this an that things like race etc etc but people now don't wanna claim is human. I think that Superman is just a nice dude, that's what makes him special.
I LOVE my tragic heroes (Spider-Man is my personal favorite). But he shows that you can be a hero without having a tragic back story. You can be powerful, privileged even, and not be a douchebag about it.
He,s an alien from another world, with powers to do whatever he desires, with few people able to stop him. Even with all that, he strives to be a nice, humble dude.
And despite being the epitome of American values, he was used (in the 40's and 50's no less!) He was used to fight racism, xenophobia and hated.
Fun fact, in the radio show Superman fought a version of the KKK. After that episode aired, KKK membership fell dramatically. And that only worked because Superman is Superman.
He's an American symbol that holds as much weight as Uncle Sam or the eagal. When he made a poster in the 50's saying that racism and prejudice were "un-American" people believed it because a personification of American values, real American values, was telling you so. That's special.
I also say, If Superman can be nice, if Superman can be a human, if this alien can be an American without being prejudiced, what's your excuse?
I think my Superman is the one from the 90's show, with Christopher Reeve being a close second.

@@Maniacfusion69 Ah, that is a fair point. I should amend.
Compared to other heroes, Superman doesn’t have as much backstory baggage.
Spider-Man (my favorite hero) is constantly guilt ridden because he never got over his uncles death. So Peter blames himself for everything, even when it wasn’t really his fault.
Batman never got over his parents death, and he (really the writers) CONSTANTLY bring it up.
Unlike most heroes, Superman isn’t guilt ridden over his past. When Superman broods, he broods in the moment, not about Krypton or his dead dad. So compared to other heroes, he has a less tragic story. This makes him unique, and I enjoy that about him. Superman just saves the day because he feels like it, not because he feels guilty.

I like Superman but criticizing people that thinks like Lex for one thing is stupid Lex thinks Superman's powerful and so do everyone else also anyone who's a writer will usually agree that a character at the bottom is usually more developed when he gets to the top then someone who just started at the top

Maybe u could explain it to me if you’d like. But basically the reason Lex’s thought process is wrong is because not only is he one of the most cynical characters out there, but he’s also one of the most egotistical, childish, and petty characters in DC. That’s what makes his character contrast so well with Clark yk. Basically, Lex focuses on the power Superman has and how “inferior” we are compared to him instead of focusing on what Superman actually does with that power. How he respects the good people of earth. How he inspires us to do good. How he’s a friend who’s just trying to help. That’s why Lex is such a good villain. Not because he poses the biggest threat, but because he’s the complete opposite of Clark. Hope I answered your question. People who want to make specifically "edgy" characters, yeah, cringe. Anyone who makes a character with such specific characteristics, can lead to cringe.
I look at pro wrestling. So heavily scripted, nothing feels organic. Stone Cold got over not just because he was "the disgruntled employee fighting his evil boss", but because of how natural he made his character look. He didn't cuss because it made him seem "cool and edgy", he did it because a) it comes naturally to him the person, and b) it comes naturally to the character.
It's easy to say "this character is doing good just because," or that "this character is doing evil just because." In *SOME* cases, some, it works. Superman does what he does because of the way he was raised(a good-hearted country boy from a loving family, I think I just found my connection☺). Then you have "evil for no reason", not in Lex, but in Joker. He is chaos incarnate, madness personified.
I consider myself both seeing the way the world could be, and the way the world is. I believe all life is precious, but I know there are bad folks who would view what I have as worth dying to take(even if they didn't think they'd die trying to take it).
I have a veritable library of characters in my mind. Could some fall under the label of "edgy"? That's up to the reader, I just write the story as it flows.
Two of my all-time favorite heroes in comics are, ironically, Batman and Punisher. I like the tough idealism of Batman, but I understand that, sometimes, you gotta know when to squeeze the trigger. I like Blade, not because he's edgy(a cutting pun☺), but because I like the idea of a vampire hunting vampires(and other monsters). Gambit, a fellow Cajun☺.
Do I like Superman? Yes, and like I said, I just discovered a connection. I am more of a Batman fan, but the gap has shrunk☺.

For Superman should be that the more he tries to help, the more difficult his task as Superman becomes, like in Superman: Birthright or What happened with thw man of Tomorrow. Is also important that Superman NEVER leaves, and the only time he leaves should be because he breaks the rules that he created for himself

Spider-man amd superman are two sides of the same coin for me, they're both in the middle class, call their respective "city of tomorrow" home, have a wealthy super genius would-be entrepreneur as their nemesis, they're more partners to their respective global hero teams than members of them, they were raised by good hard working people amd take that work ethic with them, their households are more vulnerable than they are and this pushes them to be extremely protective of them, both are creative with their powers. Where their differences lie imo compliments them: They possess identical color pallets but they're reversed. Peter didn't want to become a hero, develop an expertise in chemistry, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, hand to hand combat, acrobatics, cover up bruises, hide his identity beyond just wearing a mask, or work with any, let alone every major superhero team, all between the ages of 15 and 18. Clark wasnt born in or raised anywhere near Metropolis, he wanted to go, to lead and be lead by them, to travel the world and do all he can to help those in need, to work with the justice league. They both inspire because they represent both sides of why we do good, because we have to, because we we're obligated. Threatening their loved ones in order to create tension is representative of a lack of confidence that the audience will care otherwise.

*“With great power comes great responsibility”*
I feel like that quote is most suitable to Superman. The most powerful character in the DC universe is also the most responsible because of his kind-nature and unshakable morals. Like Peter, he offers his free will to help others for nothing in return. Despite powerful figures (ie Lex Luthor & J. Jonah Jameson) trying to paint a bad picture of them to their respected cities, they persist on fighting for what they believe in and let their actions do the talking. Because of their power levels, they hold back extensively and could do some serious damage if all responsibility was lost, like how we see in Injustice or when Peter let loose on Kingpin.

I think the key and most sad part as to why people don’t get Superman is that they can’t comprehend having that level of power and choosing to do the right thing.

Honestly I used to be in the camp of "it's impossible for Superman to be interesting because he's invincible". Actually took reading One Punch Man to realize how wrong I was. It's not the powers that make a story, its how the author uses them as a vehicle to tell compelling stories. Anyways, I've become a certified Superman defender and fan. Great video and very well sums up exactly what makes him such a great, timeless character. Tired of the cynicism and nihilism, and really needed a character like Supes who will be ever the optimist.

Thank you for this video. Superman for me is not a boring character but a character that represents faith. Faith that there is good in the world, faith that humanity will fight for justice, faith in hope. It is this faith that shows the hope of Superman embodies. Imagine, a man a thousand times more powerful than you and he has faith that you can do good. I find that incredibly inspiring, and also a bit melancholic because, in today's world, people lose faith in hope. People see the ugly side of life and say, Why live justly? Why should I hope for good? I know at least I have asked those questions in my life. However, every time I think of Superman's character, I am reminded of hope. The sole example that a man can view the ugliest sides of humanity and say "I will still fight for good, because I have faith in humanity" is a powerful message. That is why I like superman as hero. Not as much as others with a similar role, like The Flash or Nightwing (in the sense that he represents a brighter batman), but Superman is epitome of faith. And this part of his character is what I feel that the current superman movies fail to grasp. They don't show the struggling man that has unending faith in humanity, but the super that can solve problems with the flick of the wrist.

People who say Superman is outdated while fanboying over Batman completely miss the point; At the end of the day, Batman came about from the same values that make Superman, just applied differently. Superman wants to do good because he has the means to do so and that's how he was raised. Batman wants to make something good come from his loss and tries to do so through the means available to him. He might not be as outwardly nice about it as Clark, but Bruce wants to do good just as much as he does. It's why depicting them as close friends works as well as it does.

Love both Bats and Supes in different ways. They're both what a super idealist like me strives to be, mentally at least. I'd always argue when someone says Superman is not a compelling character. His powers are so above us but he's so human. I totally agree with the point that Superman is supposed to be a symbol of hope and the Snyder films have in some ways butchered that endearing quality of his.

At least someone understands superman. I think Snyder should watch this video. Superman’s gets so much hate and is a character with misconceptions. He’s not boring and he’s much more relatable than batman. He’s the paragon of humanity and all superheroes. Excellent character study.

      Eem 2wavy
Superman is a metaphor for immigrants and people who suffer alienation. He is an outsider.
      Superman suffers existentialism.
Superman works a 9-5 job, whilst batman is a billionaire
superman’s intentions are superior to batman. - batman doesn’t want to teach criminals he just wishes they are dead.( he doesn’t kill since he knows as a result he’d become a Murderer - not a good person),
Superman wishes to teach people to love and have compassion.
Superman is he paragon of humanity and humankind, he is the beacon of what people should aspire to be.
Despite superman’s power it doesn’t change his ideology
Superman proves that if you are good, kind and have a loving heart you can achieve any goal or dream. Batman however proves to be successful or respected you need money and wealth,
Superman is called super’MAN’, and not super-alien or super-being, because he’s the best that we can be. When we love care and save someone etc, we are superman
Superman fights to defeat villains because he fears failing humankind and letting people down.
Superman is a metaphor for the result of love and compassion. Clark kents parents defines superman
      (Mum)Martha kent=love and empathy
      (Dad)Jonathan kent= leader, self sacrifice
      (Wife)Lois lane= perseverance
Superman is how he visions humankind. He sees humans as incredible and a piece of astonishment,

      The Omega Effect
      That’s him more relatable?
Superman doesn’t have to work he works bc he wants to not bc he needs to.
Do you read batman comics? Even the joker himself says batman goals are to re habilitate all the criminals bc he think they can become good. And of course he would wish for some dead he is human and that’s relatable I’m not sure what was your point with this.
Your contradicting yourself honestly no human is perfect but Superman is and yet he is relatable? Yeah no Superman is not relatable if he is what humans strive to become that makes zero sense. Flawed people are relatable perfect people aren’t.
Lol wft? Batman does not prove non of that shit. Hell batman is not even about the money batman is about what humans can achieve and how they can surpass their limits. He makes us want to work out and go to the gym or learn martial art. Talking about is money or wealth is not even half the story of Batman it’s more about tech and martial arts.
Again that is contradicting what you are saying. You say Superman is more relatable but then you talk about how perfect he is like do you know what relatable means?
You should not clearly your definition of relatable is different from my.
Perfect people are apparently more relatable than a flawed person but whatever

    • @legendary3952
      @legendary3952 5 лет назад +32

Eem 2wavy none can become batman unless your a billionaire. Anyone can become superman. Superman is a symbol and a metaphor of justice and compassion. Saving a person, or doing a good deed in your life, is being superman. That’s what superman is it’s just you do understand him. That’s why he is called superman and not super alien or superperson. The man in the title is significant as it explores what it is to be great.
Batman isn’t a good person. He doesn’t kill because he fears the consequences and the result of his own sanity after. Superman is constantly struggling to hold back, because he fears the danger it would leave if he didn’t. Batman holds back because he would become a homicidal murderer, overwise. Batman is a sociopath.
Superman teaches you the result of having good values and a kind heart, batman teaches you the path of tyranny which would happen if tragedy existed in your life.
Superman lives an understandable, and average and relatable job. Batman lives as a billionaire can get whatever he wants

Eem 2wavy superman can be affected by emotions. It’s his very weakness just like human. He is constantly facing existentialism. And alienation.

Superman is the embodiment of the good of humanity, while Luthor is the embodiment of the evil of humanity. Superman is a moralist, and Luthor is a nihilist. They are the two sides of the one coin that is humanity. When we get power, we can choose to do good or to do evil. Superman is the symbol of doing the right thing with absolute power. That's what makes him special. We need moral truth in this society now more than ever. Superman is not about power, he's about responsibility.

I suppose with news of an upcoming Flashpoint film it is all salvageable (the point being that in my opinion it needs fixing). While I did somewhat enjoy the movies, as a fan of comics, particularly dc comics, I feel they began on a really terrible foundation with Man of Steel and BvS. The visuals were good but the characters were wrong almost like the movies creators find superman an embarrassing character or too unbelievable that his story had to be recreated - not told differently but undone and changed. And even then they didn't do it well as far as storytelling and film standards go. From my personal observations I'd say this. Jonathan Kent did mess up everything like if Uncle Ben didn't believe that with great power comes great responsibility; superman's only value was his abilities but he had no personal convictions or life goals, he made no choices and just wanders till he's forced to act. BvS brought a Batman near the end of his story and therefore somehow unrecognisable with Superman mostly ignored, left the wanderer he was, and the movie as a whole was a mess plotwise while undermining the feeling I got from man of Steel that superman was the first hero to appear in the snyderworld. Maybe this whole time snyder had just wanted to make The Dark Knight Returns into a film which I bet he'd have done so well.
I can only summarise the above as it would take too long explaining the dissatisfaction I have for snyder's version of DC comics stories. I say dissatisfaction cause I see such good ideas and actors wasted in incoherent and/or rushed films.

He doesn't need an angsty backstory to motivate him (yes, he lost his birth parents, but he was adopted so young into such a loving family; it's sad, but not angsty. Plus, he's good because of his upbringing, not his trauma). 13:16 I have a suggestion for the way DC could've fixed Man of Steel. What if they kept humans rejecting Clark, but Kal-El continues to fight for them anyway? What if the arc isn't really Superman, but rather the people of Metropolis? I've always envisioned that Metropolis should be bleak and pessimistic with high suicide rates, homelessness, and poverty(while Gotham suffers from corruption and dangerous crime). Lex Luthor endorses the cynical views of humanity and leads the people of Metropolis in creating hoplessness. Creating this setting contrast against Superman could help him stand out and why his "naïve optimism" can work.

Superman is the most powerful hero of all time. The greatest.
His stories are emotional Conflicts, the reasons and purposes behind why he uses his powers the way he does in any given situation. His morals, his code, what he stands for as an individual. He is a human being with power that can’t be matched. He is emotionally vulnerable like any everyone. It’s his actions and the way he handles himself and others that makes him so special. He doesn’t have a physical weakeness, he is resistant to Kryptonite and red sun light. It’s with time and experience that he learns how to use his powers in those situations. MAGIC WAS NEVER A WEAKENESS OF HIS. He has beaten tons of people who use magic.
As a writer. You do not have to nerf a hero who is limitlessly powerful in order to present his story. This is an issue I’ve had with his cartoons, movies and sometimes his comics.
His stories are everyday experiences that any human being can relate to. We all have power it’s how we use it to what extent and the conflicts/consequences that may come into play.
In addition to this,Superman is an amazing example of nature and nurture this heavily informs him of how and why he uses his powers the way he does.
I love superman. He’s the GOAT. Most powerful hero ever and I hope more people show him the respect he deserves. Without Superman Comics wouldn’t be where it is today. He started it all. He’s the role model for every hero that exists, there would be no batman, spider-man, Captain América, Captain Marvel (Shazam), Wonder Woman and many more if it wasn’t for Superman.
Love superman and I always will. My favourite hero. Strong. Kind. Optimistic. Leader. Legend. Friend. Thoughtful. Intelligent. Emphatic. Loving. He’s everything anyone would want in a hero and more.
Have good day guys. I wish you every happiness and success in this life.
    Peace !

They are the most stupidest people I've ever heard of, they constantly cherry pick(not a lot of people know about the meaning of that word so I suggest that it should be looked up) /take out of context the feats and facts to oblivion in order to create the delusion of Superman being more powerful than he is.

Superman was not the first superhero, the two authors who wrote him in the 20th century also took inspiration from other things. Nor is he the first character with powers and abilities unexplained by the laws of physics.
By your diluted logic, characters in Greek or Norse mythology should be able to kill Superman since they were one of the first powerful fictional characters before Superman. But Superman fanboys think that Superman can defeat Zeus. What a joke.

He's not even the first Superhero, his authors took inspiration from other things, he isn't even the first fictional character with powers and abilities unexplained by the laws of physics. They always keep on projecting their pride/smug at others using emojis or emotion text symbols to deliberately make people mad, they ironically do all this due to their personal insecurities about a fictional character. They are mentally children, seriously its embarrassing.
Even if he was the first Superhero, they NEVER explain the logic behind the "he was first!" argument somehow making Superman "the most powerful Superhero". That tells a lot about how much human level intelligence they have left or any at all, they are literally drunk in their fantasies of Superman.
This guy is saying that he doesn't have a physical weakness when a character with the power/ability of immunity negation(permanent) in a good enough powerset can hurt him with a regular knife or a human level strength punch.

My Grandfather lived in the same era of time as the John Kent in the Donner Superman film. He started working a full-time job to support his mother, sisters, and brothers when he was in the fourth grade. He taught me that being a man was about taking care of your family and friends being the rock they needed even when it was hard. He taught me to reach out a hand to anyone who needed my help regardless of there background, and to stand up to protect others. Those seem to be the same things John taught Clark and it seems to me those teachings are still pretty relevant to the modern day not just the sixties. It's not that Warner doesn't know that they just don't think they can sell it. That's why they used Snyder.

Something that I always liked so much about Superman is more or less what he represents, rather then what he's trying to pull off or be.
Superman's greatest trait, his greatest power isn't the strength, or the flight, or even the laser eyes. It's the heart. An alien comes to earth and learns to understand its people, and with love and faith becomes the embodiment of what humanity should be, what it can be: compassion, justice, courage and humility. Superman is super, because he is a man.

I often see people saying how Lex came from nothing, and had to crawl his way to the top, while Superman was born with his powers. While that is true, your missing the point of their relationship.
Not all good men have to have suffered, not all bad men privileged, it's just a matter of what you do, and who you are.
Lex is a bad man, he lets his own cynicism infect his view of everything around him, believing that it all doesn't matter, that all anyone should care about in the end is themselves, because that's all we'll ever have.
Superman is an optimist, he believes in the best in people, is always willing to lend a hand to those who need it, and those who think they don't. He had everything he needs, he is happy 'just' helping others.
Lex could have been a better man, he could have been like Superman, used all his smarts and wealth to help others, instead of hating Superman who does nothing wrong, as Superman said.
"If you really wanted to save the world, you could have".
Superman could have become like Lex, only caring about himself, uncaring to those he hurts. But they aren't that way, because Clark Kent is Superman, and Lex Luther, is Lex Luther.

DC has pretty much chosen Batman as their champion b/c of his dominance in almost every medium (TV, movies, video games, graphic novels, etc...). Cap has become the ultimate boy scout in the eyes of the general public due to the MCU. And while Dragon Ball started out as the Japanese version of Journey to the West, DBZ pretty much retconned the franchise to be Akira Toriyama's own Superman story. What I think when a lot of writers and the public say that "superman is not relatable, and that he's perfect, etc." They miss the point that Superman is supposed to inspire you and that Clark Kent is the one you are supposed to relate to. Dean Cain's Superman said it perfectly: "Superman is what I can do, Clark Kent is who I am." So in essence, in order to get Superman right, you have to get Clark Kent right; to get Clark Kent right, you have to get Ma and Pa Kent right. Which is something that a lot of people fail to realize/do.

My very first comic book was Superman, also the first live action series on Heroes from the 50's and the first animated super hero was also Superman. He and the other DC pantheon of heroes have always been something near and dear to my heart. I remember reading a quote about him from a comic creator. "anyone who says Superman is a hard person to write because of his invulnerability and so forth, what they're really showing is how incapable they are of crafting a story that people would want to read or watch."

A modern superman should probably be a superman that's in a hard struggle to comprehend what's right and what's not and that's far less active or much more specific about what he does.
The modern superman lives in a world where it's much harder to even know what the right thing to do *is*.... but that doesn't mean he will stop trying.

"But the one thing they love more than a hero is to see a hero fail, fall, die trying. In spite of everything you've done for them, eventually, they will hate you." - Norman Osborn

    Great work!
I always felt off with DCEU's Superman. Though I found intersting the dilema of a 'god among men' and the politics involved, it was never SUPERMAN. That version never got to stop a robbery or a corrupt politician/business man, rescue a kitten from a tree nor save people on the other side of the planet from a natural or social disaster.
If DCEU pull off Flashpoint, they should definitely strive for Dini's and Ross's depiction in 'Peace on Earth' and 'Kingdom Come', as well as Morrison's 'All-Star'.
    Who would you recast?
