Imagine landing a 1080 in front of Tony Hawk (who wasn't going to compete and hasn't done it in 18 years, but decided to last second), among other legends, and winning the gold medal, besides setting a few records, at only 12yo. He's a beast.
It's worth noting that it took Tony Hawk 11 tries to land the 900. He didn't land it during competition. He was 32. This kid, at almost a third that age, landed a 1080 on his 7th try in competition. It's hard enough to land a 1080 on a mega ramp, but to do it in a half pipe with what - 3 feet of vert? That's impressive.
This was amazing, don't get me wrong. Skateboarding has progressed soo much since the 90s though, and this wasn't the first 1080 ever done so yea people aren't as hyped. Plus half the crowd is playing with their phones trying to feel better about themselves not even noticing what's going down.
X games now isnt what it was back then. Extreme sports were so much more popular back then. Nowadays look at the continuously dwindling crowds that x games have been bringing in for the last 5-10 years. Past few years it has looked like empty stadiums. The energy just isn't the same.

I watched the vert contest beforehand and couldn’t understand why the judges weren’t giving Gui higher scores. He definitely should have been on the podium. This kid has a huge future ahead of him.

things just change. for example hendrix is still the most legendar guitar player despite there be being guys who can do way insane more stuff but nobody really cares. it's just that was the peak of excitement regarding it because it was still at its frontier. Everything seems to go to an apex where there is a breakthrough and then after that it progresses but it doesn't really matter

@@McBurgle Also, it’s not something your average skater can do, so it’s not really relatable. With street, you may be able to do a flip trick on flat that a pro can do off a huge stair set or a grind on a curb that a pro can do down a massive handrail. It’s more relatable.

Oh my ! It's insane X) new generation of skaters especially kids are so freaking good ! I took skate lessons when I was his age and I remember the first time I try a drop in on a half pipe (and I fell so many times X) Unfortunately, the teacher changed the next year and he wasn't as good as the old one. I was the only girl and that teacher mocked me so I ended up quiting skateboarding because I thought I will never be good enough. Since then I'm really afraid to be on a skateboard in front of other people but I'm so happy to see all these kids, boys and girls doing such cool tricks especially on Vert.

Im pretty dissapointed, when Tony Landed that 900 was super epic the reaction of everyone. Now a kid lands an 1080 and everyone was like ok good.

Part of the reason was Tony had a full crowd. Unfortunately at this crowd was limited to mainly competitors and family due to COVID
