    One fun detail is that Raz's outfit in Psychonauts 1 is implied to be Raz's attempt to mimic Sasha's wardrobe (striped turtleneck sweater, oversized leather jacket, etc). This becomes all the sweeter in Psychonauts 2, where he loses his old clothes and receives a set of clothes directly from Sasha

    Explanation for the guy who sees Raz as a cigarette dispenser at 35:
    they;re an office drone with a nicotine addiction, Raz is "the intern", which many office drones just consider "general gopher" and in this case "guy who gets me cigarettes" hence a cigarette dispenser.

      Sasha does see Raz as a younger version of himself (you can see this by using Clairvoyance on him in either of the games) and because of his matter-of-fact personality, he probably went through a similar experience in his youth and wants to help Raz through this. Sadly we don't get to interact with Sasha & Milla too much in Psychonauts 2 (they're pretty much always in their labs preoccupied with searching for clues) but there is gonna be another great scene with Sasha later on that underlines the relationship between Raz & him pretty well

    The interns are interesting. More subdued than the campers, which makes since as they are teens. Going to try to be more stand-off-ish, I guess. I'm surprised the mention of "I used to live in the circus" didn't get more questions or interest!

    A quick warning: The scavenger hunt is not completable until after the end of the game. All the other optional missions can be finished before the credits roll. There are a couple of points of no return in the story, but they are very clearly flagged.
    SImilarly, a couple of the brain missions have figments in places you can't go back to when revisiting the brains, but in those cases the figments are moved somewhere more easily accessible if you go back using the brain tumbler.

  • @Asexual_Individual
    @Asexual_Individual 2 года назад +19

    First interaction with the Interns had me going, "I don't like any of you, and no future character development is going to make me like you".
    Raz is 10 and they all look to be 4-5 years older than him (a future line suggests that they're not old enough to drink), yet their first action on meeting Raz is to haze him by stealing his clothes and lock him in a cold room (without Harold, Raz wouldn't have gotten out). I'm not all the way through the game yet, but they haven't even apologised and the way everyone just acts like they're fine with Raz (except one) probably means that they won't.
    And Sasha justifying the hazing through saying it's an initiation ritual just makes me uncomfortable.

    • @struanpeat5116
      @struanpeat5116 2 года назад +15

      Having seen the whole game, I agree with this conclusion
      Most of the interns are just not worth caring about and one in particular (need I name them?) Never improves their attitude, while the others come to accept raz
      I see it more that they're awkward about hazing him, and regret it, but not enough to offer closure, but that just leaves us in the same position as before where they never address it again

    • @liampoulton-king7479
      @liampoulton-king7479 2 года назад +9

      I get a strong impression that the interns were intended to have more development, but that was cut at some point.
      Over all, this game seems like one that’s kind of over-flowing with ideas, to the point that it doesn’t execute them all as well as it could. Still a pretty good experience overall though.

    • @Asexual_Individual
      @Asexual_Individual 2 года назад +7

      @@liampoulton-king7479 Yep, I just finished the story and it does feel like that.
      Slight spoilers:
      They're important at the start of the game with the hotel mission, everyone doing their part, but then they don't become important again until the final fight. The middle (and majority) of the game just has them like the campers where you can find them around the game world and get some character dialogue.

    • @peterpeladon
      @peterpeladon 2 года назад +6

      @@Asexual_Individual About half of them are related to sidequests that made them feel more developed as characters. It might be because I explored a ton, but I felt like I'd gotten to know them by the end.
      And other than the one designed to be hated, they were fun. They're less important than the campers, though. Just a broader cast in general.
      Must have been hard to pick what was most important to keep in this game; it had so many good ideas.

      Well it fits with Sasha's tough love approach that he'd justify hazing even if it's not actually ok. I do wish we'd gotten more development out of the interns but given that the game almost had to cut entire bossfights before it was saved I'll just save that for fanfic and just let them off with a "eh I'm sure they had something planned" (cause this is double fine, they wouldn't let Bobby Zilch have a bandaid on his cheek because it didn't have a story behind it)

    Even though I wouldn't call the gameplay loop of Brutal Legend "great" by any means, it at least tried to do something new and exciting. I really love the idea of an RTS game where you can drop into the field and fight alongside your units and to this day I don't think anyone has really done that successfully. It was a neat idea that just needed a little more time to develop smoothly but, regardless, the presentation was phenomenal. The title screen at the record store is still one of my favorite title screens in any video game ever made.

      There is battlezone 1 and 2 where you fight along side your units in vehicles with a base building system kind of like command and conquer. Also there is Sacrifice which plays a bit like rts parts of Brütal Legend.

    • @PlebNC
      @PlebNC 2 года назад

      As someone who hates playing RTS games I liked Brutal Legend as it was easy to grasp and it allowed the player to both command and participate in the battle which made combat feel more personal and involved.
      Also I hated how the game was marketed, which was more EA's fault than Double Fine's. The trailers and demo made it feel like some sort of open world God of War or Zelda thing, but it was actually more RTS focused. Yeah, the open world stuff was still there but I feel it didn't feel reflective of the whole experience. In spite of that, it was still a fun time and can't help yelling "decapitation" like Eddie Riggs does.

      Because someone wrote it down so they'd not forget, and Harold, recognizing what a major security breach this would be, squireled it away in a place no humans would be able to find it; that way he could give the code to the people who needed it, but it wouldn't fall into untoward hands by accident.

    something I adore is how Sasha and Milla clearly respect and acknowledge Raz. Especially at 31:35 When Raz suggests everyone goes Sasha immediately follows up with an agreement that Forscythe could be of help and Milla jumps in by pointing out that the interns could use the experience.
    They understand Raz is a kid, but they also recognise his skills and talent and as such care for him, but don't dismiss him like so many other stories would.

    I'm of two minds about the Microsoft acquisition. On the one hand, Dan lays out a really strong argument in favor of it. And the game was saved from being cut down with Microsoft stepping in to finish funding the game's development.
    But I don't like the way Microsoft has been going about studio acquisitioning- the Bethesda acquisition in particular left a really bad taste in my mouth. With most of Sony's first party developers, they were studios that were Sony spin-offs or gardens for future talent (like Santa Monica Studios, Polyphony Digital, Japan Studio), or studios that had a lot of history making games for Playstation consoles where acquisition felt like an obvious next step (Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Sucker Punch, Guerrilla).
    With a lot of Microsoft's recent acquisitions, they've been of studios that have been primarily third-party developers (Ninja Theory, Obsidian, Double Fine, and again, Bethesda) which just looks like they're playing catch-up to build up a collection of their own first party studios. I'd rather see them growing the ones they already own by letting them branch out (Rare, 343, The Coalition, Playground Games), many of which were neglected or mismanaged (Lionhead). It would really suck if the Microsoft acquisition means that the future of the studio becomes Xbox-exclusive, but I'm glad the team has more stability and the game turned out as special as it is.

      I mean, that makes sense for Rare or Playground Games, but: When your studios are named after elements from specific franchises (343 Games, The Coalition), you can't really move beyond those franchises. As for Lionhead? Ok, I'm calling it (no spoiler, it's pure speculation on my part).
    Otto Mentallis is the bad guy/mole. That's based purely on the shape of his head and his hair, it just seems to fit with that dark figure that we saw in Lobotos Mind that threatened him with the image of Maligula.

    • @SystemBD

      Yes, it was a great game... but the sudden change between the adventure game section (demanded by the publisher) and the RTS part (that Double Fine wanted to make,) was so jarring that it ended confusing reviewers and first-time players.

    I would love a Brütal Legend series, though I understand the monetization fears, especially because older metal bands are *strict when it comes to their music. But I just want to see the scene with a very specific "Guardian of Metal."
    *I would use harsher words but, eh. Not appropriate on a Psychonauts video.

    Brutal Legend is an ok game. It's a wierd mix of gameplay style, a bit of action and a bit of RTS. Not the best mix, but it works.
    It will however get this channel so incredibly demonetized.

    • @DeadFishTheKing
      @DeadFishTheKing 2 года назад

      The gameplay is the one thing that holds it down, the story, voice acting, world building and the SOUNDTRACK are unlike anything else. It's the weirdest thing, I can't call it a favorite because I genuinely hate the core play loop, but everything else would make it one of my favorites of all time..

    Getting demonetized would probably be the least of your worries with that Brutal Legend video. A lot of metal bands (particularly older ones) are really strict about blocking videos on RUclips that include their music. Black Sabbath and Guns N' Roses are particularly hard-nosed about it.

    Games that are similar to Brutal Legend: Sacrifice and the entire Legacy of Kain series. Put them on you to play list and if you can also add Second Sight and Cryptark. Yes I know Second Sight at this point is an orphan work and Cryptark has a 3D sequel called Gunhead coming out next year.

    It appears to me that Hollis is the double agent, but maybe it's just a red herring.
    Also, Brutal Legend is a really fun game, it really is a pity that all the music is licensed. You *can* turn all the music off, but it'll just be boring.

    Aw, man, I'd love to see you play -Jack Black Simulator 2009- Brutal Legend! Maybe you could make it a weekly stream instead of a daily one and cut monetisation on it? It's not the best solution (probably not even a good one), but it's the best I've got.

    Brutal Legend was…fine, I guess. The humor was classic Double Fine, and the RTS/Zelda hybrid gameplay was certainly unique, but it was not as strong as it could’ve been. I think the issue is that the game is clearly made with multiplayer in mind. You’re meant to play the game with other people to fully enjoy the experience, and the single-player is more of a training tutorial. Unfortunately it was advertised for its single-player campaign, and this heaped a lot of expectations on it that it didn’t deliver. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I ever play it again? Probably not.
