    Shoot I switched "compressed" and "uncompressed" at 0:07 my bad! I'll also clarify what I meant:
    By "compressed" I tightened the screws with a moderate-firm and comfortable tension until they resisted enough to stop turning, rather than screwing them in very lightly just until they stopped turning with that amount of force (hence "uncrompressed".) Most of these configurations were also done easily thanks to longer screws which I got from Amazon: www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07FDLN8C3/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    Edit: I'd also say this vid is a little outdated since I didn't have silicone or kilmat at the time. I do have silicone now and I'll be looking to get some kilmat soon!

      @VR abyss sorry I missed your comment! I've found that compression doesn't affect deepness of sound but generally it seems that keeping material uncompressed results in the most effective dampening of unwanted pinging, hollowness, etc.
      I've also updated my explanation above to make things more clear if you're still wondering after these 6 months aha

      Sorbothane is perfect for silent keyboards. A tofu with lubed sakurios on sorbothane becomes nearly inaudible. From my experience, louder switches become more high pitched with it, as in spring noise heavy, which is why some people don't like it. But sorbothane really starts to outclass everything on deep thoccers like topres, especially for office keyboards.

    This is a very nice comparison. Sorbothane is already quite thin, so i'm not understanding what you mean with "compressed" and "uncompressed". Like literally pressing it down or what?

  • @alpacamale2909
    @alpacamale2909 3 года назад +1

    Ergo, sound dampening depends more on the material the keyboard is made of than the material you use to stop the sound from bouncing back. I would guess carbon fiber is better than aluminum and the compactness of the keyboard plays a big role as well.
    have you ever tried a thin sheet of cloth on top of the plate with holes for each switch? or maybe o top of the pcb if you are going plateless

    • @markkat6069
      @markkat6069  2 года назад

      Yeah it's a lot to get in one video so considering aluminum is like the most in need of dampening (specifically the tofu60 and imo!) I used it in this experiment as a general way to gauge and isolate the different effects of dampening materials, if any. I could put together like a playlist using the same switches to cover the 5 case dampeners I used here with each combination of case and plate that I have, but that really would be a lot of videos lol. If anything, by considering the differences of sound shown in this video, you could mentally determine how you want to alter a certain keyboard's sound and pick its dampening material accordingly.
      Interesting suggestion with the cloth though, I'll be sure the check that out. Sorry for replying 2 months later!

    • @josejimenez896

    • @temporoyale6251
      @temporoyale6251 3 года назад +1

    Which foam would u say dampened the sound the most? I’ve done many mods to my keyboard and nothing’s seems to dampen the sound at all. I’ve done the tape mod, o rings, and foam. Nothing works. And I’ve used different foams. I have box jades and I want it to be audible but quiet. I want to hear it from my room not my living room or all the way across the house. • @markkat6069
      @markkat6069  3 года назад +3

      Oh okay so the GK64 PCB itself (mine is the GK64X) has the standard layout screw-holes but they're covered by the plate, so you'd have to do one of the following:
      1. Drill holes for the layout into the plate
      2. Purchase a new plate with the proper screw-holes
      3. Go plate-less maybe temporarily (5-pin switches are stable enough to do this, however 3-pin switches I find have only a little more wobble are are completely viable.)
      A few pieces of advice:
      - I realized through purchasing plates of different materials all but one of them did NOT have the screw-holes to be attached to the GK64 PCB which you may be used to (I think this is unique to this specific keyboard however.) This screw-less plate setup is also known as a tray mount, and you can look into different mount styles here:
      thomasbaart.nl/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/20190407_KeyboardMountingStylesCheatSheet.png
      - The switch holes of a couple plates I ordered off Aliexpress were made pretty badly and I had to order a power tool to get them big enough for my switches, however KBDfans has the widest selection I've found of perfectly-made products-they're worth the cost but if that's too much you can still go for the highest rated aluminum plate on aliexpress since the disproportionate plates were carbon fiber and stainless steel
      - The plate that DID have screw-holes for the PCB is the aluminum fiber glass plate (NOT V2) from KPRepublic which is basically a better version of the GK64 stock plate: kprepublic.com/products/60-aluminum-glass-fiber-plate-with-plate-mounted-stabilizerfor-gk64-gk64s-xd64-xd60
      - The GK64 PCB is a little harder to get out of its case as you need to use some force to accomplish this; you'll have to like pull the plate up from the bottom corners first so you can pull the entire thing loose away from where the type-c connector is sticking in to the case
