In some cases, it's a bit more clear cut and specific. In the universal century, it's a Gundam if it was designed and build using primarily data and specifications from the rx-78. In IBO, it's a Gundam if it's built with a Gundam Frame, which basically means the internal most basic skeleton of the machine will look almost exactly like a mechanical human skeleton.

Well, considering that the Hazel is a improved version of GM Quel with the appearance of a Gundam, it should still fall in the category as a Gundam. Specially if you consider the fact that the GMs are basically just cheaper massproduced Gundams.
UPDATE: Post Disaster: Gundams are specialized frames made during the “Calamity War”, and were known for their specialized armor that let them shrug off beam weaponry, and their “Alaya Vijnana” systems, which allowed pilots to control the suits as if they were part of their bodies (as long as they got the proper surgery to obtain “whiskers” on their backs that let them use the system to begin with). There were 72 Gundam frames built during the conflict, each named after a demon from the Ars Goetia. Ad Stella: In order to improve on the GUND system, specialized Mobile Suits known as GUND-ARMS were built. GUND-ARMS were also known as, you guessed it, Gundams. The Gundams were meant to allow pilots to use the GUND system on higher levels without damaging their bodies.
And with the Ad-Stella timeline, Gundam is referring to mobile suits using the GUND-Format technology. Specifically, they are called GUND-Arms with the Gundam moniker being a common nickname.
Well each series has it's own definition. Usually Gundams are just more powereful mobile suits with superior energy and stats. UC's "Gundams" were prototype units that were far superior to regular mobile suits. RX-78-2 Was extremely powerful for it's time, MKII was a prototype test for replicating Gundam units, and Unicorn was a full-psycho frame prototype. 00's "Gundams", according to Setsuna, are things that eradicate war through force. They can be people or AI, like Veda. But usually the term is referred to units with the Original GN Drives. Iron Blooded Orphans' "Gundams" are just units that were experimental and way more overpowered than units at the time. The "Gundams" were built for war. There were 72 "Gundam Frames", all identical in every aspect, but each "Gundam Frame" had different armor and weapons put onto them for different uses. They were just versatile templates that could be outfitted with anything and be used for all types of combat. Oh, and they were suits with 2 Ahab reactors. So yeah, different definitions.
They don't use beam Lazer in the post disaster timeline the Gundam frame and other mobile suits weapons are iron metal weapon's because it's the first Gundam title without beam lazer
Also there are 3 frame generations for the Gundams in IBO. Beal, Barbatos and Gusion are early gen. Kimaris is mid gen and Hirobushi, Florios and Dentelion are late gen.
Hell, if we want to use the look excuse..... the Dragonar units from Metal Armor Dragonar could pass for Gundams. (When you consider the year that anime was created and who made it, plus even with D-1's DISTINCTIVE color scheme..... It's a given)
Well said Rise. The term Gundam should mean more then just the V-Fin, Chin and Faceplate. If we consider mechs a Gundam by their looks alone, then the Huckebein from SRW would be considered a Gundam when it isn't.
It so surprising to see a channel that does Gundam content. Its great. Yeah, I seen a lot of comments that said the G-Self or even more recently the Barbatos doesn't look a like a Gundam and that very train of thought baffles me. Like what constitutes being a Gundam? I'm glad someone made a video about that very thing.
DEATHxTHExKIDx1 heh, well in a way I can always have a new meaning for what a Gundam is, something that changes the mindset of an individual through informing.
Hey Rise I agree with you and I'm not going against what you said but even though I agree that the Turn A is a Gundam I just have to say that it looks incredibly stupid but that's just my two cents on the subject.
Overall, great video and explanation to what a Gundam is. I'm getting real tired of "fans" saying the new Gundams aren't Gundams because it had no V-fins and shit.
The 225677th Fragment of the Man-Emperor of Mankind I've always said that, "if it had a v-fin, it's a gundam" but my favourite mobiles suits are the EZ8, Pale Rider and Blue Destiny unit 1....... I'm the biggest hypocrite....... so should I change my ways or keep saying this to tell people how much of an idiot I am.
The 225677th Fragment of the Man-Emperor of Mankind the only thing that defines what a Gundam is in a series is what the creators put it as because each series as a new universe all on its own except for a course the sequel series or a series that follows a previous one but even still for the most part it's a new universe all on its own with different characters and different Gundams so overall what a Gundam is is going to depend on what the series is in it doesn't have to be a certain shape a certain size has a certain color it doesn't have to be any of that
Great video! you are absolutely right about the tendency of Gundam fans to argue about the little things: if a Gundam looks like a Gundam or not; if a non-Gundam ought to be a Gundam because it looks like one. Its fine if the fans want to share what MS designs they like or dislike but there isn't a really a good reason to argue whether an MS is a Gundam or not.
+WarMachine395 Every new variation that is called a Gundam gives more source material to what a Gundam can look like. To be honest, one of the biggest changes in looks was the sudden change between the MkII and the Zeta Gundam. And we all love the Zeta, even more when Zeta Zaku.
+Tuning3434 G-Reco certainly added to that list in a big way, and the Iron Blooded Orphans anime certainly seems to be doing something almost as unique, and with the 72 Gundam-frames we'll be seeing plenty more too. :D
They may have different meanings and acronyms for what Gundam is but their is one thing in common for every Gundam design which is they have made huge impacts and turning points in wars, creating peace (sorta), finding hope in the darkness of chaos. Basically my point is sorta the samething to what sestuna was saying that we are all Gundams in which a Gundam is a machine that can change course of the world for the better or worse depending on how it’s used.
It'd be really cool if you did a Gundam evolution series, like for U.C explaining the advantages of successive newer models of Gundam and unique features. Obviously you probably have a lot planned but it's an idea if you ever have a creative block
6:02"Darry Neil Guns, a fan of the Gundam, modified his worker mobile suit to resemble the original RX-78 Mobile Suit Gundam," it wasn't for psychological warfare, the pilot was a huge fan of the original Gundam so he made his mobile worker look like the RX 78,Not for psychological warfare, the hazel Gundam (a gm quel with a Gundam head) on the other hand yes,I thought to clear things out for you guys
RUclips should need more this kind of channel Have the guts and the brain to make everyone understand some debate isn't even needed in the first place, I salute you O7.
For the Cosmic Era, the acronym I always use is Generation Unrestricted Network Drive Assault Module. And for me, I have a much simpler definition of what a Gundam is. For a Mobile Suit to be a true "Gundam", it has to not only have incredibly high performance and combat ability, but it also has to be able to enter Earth's atmosphere all by itself.
looking over this video again and again, all the gundams that are shown, usually has atleast one thing that is related the original gundam. if its not the color scheme then its the V fin. no V Fin, then its the red chin, if not that then, atleast one color use from the original color scheme, etc. The one gundam that looks so out there (atleast imo) is the G Lucifer (the purple mono eye with the horn). but even so it has a white-ish color. But I wholeheartedly agree with the final statements: the creator has the final say and each show has their own definition of a Gundam so its pointless to make some universal rule to cover the franchise. this is a very entertaining and informative video :)
I think the only factor shared with RX-78 and Gusion are equal number of limbs, two eyes and able to use laser rifles. I have never seen a bulkier gundam, but if you do I want to see.
+Patrick Chansy there is the nuclear weapon Gundam from Stardust memory (gp02a Physalis), which is pretty bulky with the design, weapons and gigantic shield. in terms of non-humanoid framework there is the Grand Gundam from G Gundam, that one is such a behemoth in the show, only then to be overshadowed by the Devil Gundam's regular and colony form. To be even more out there, the hilariously awesome Sphinx Gundam of Neo Egypt. Lastly there are the shuffle alliance gundams with such unique designs that they can really be questioned on whether they are gundams. Then again, it is a spin off show and most Gundams have very similar heads of what a typical gundam head would be (except for Nobel Gundam, being more reminiscent to Zeta).
Patrick Chansy at first I thought u meant fusion, but I was wrong, Gusion definitely looks like a mecha toad o.0 yeah that is pretty much the most out of nowhere gundam out there. looking up a wiki of it, there is a pic of concept art for Gusion and the inside of all the armor makes it look like a typical gundam (mainly the head) but other than that, yeah that is definitely different and pretty much the only thing that connects it to the original is the humanoid design.
Gundam is usually referred to a prototype or a special Mobile Suit that has enhanced capabities throughout the gundam universes with the exception of Gundam SEED universe in which gundam is an acronym for the operating system of a mobile suit
Actually Gundams are Ferraris and none Gundam units are either mustangs or Corvettes. Unless they are non Gundam designated test units then they are Lamborghinis.
If you have to say, I believe that the word Gundam in most, are High-performance prototype machine that designed to be hv significant improvement over others, it doesnt matter how it looks like. But the fact is, Gundam has to be more "realistic" than other superrobot. By "more realistic" I mean that it must be have a Gundam-physics that can explain it, Unlike a robot that powered by a infinite-power crystal that left by anicent Gods.
Magnificent. Just magnificent. The meanings are more clear now. It really doesn't matter if the design looks different, what really matters is it's purpose as well, and labeling of course. I hope people get to see this video so they can understand, especially Filipinos and other people, 'cause they see every mecha as a Gundam, if they're not educated about it. Once again, this is another piece of proof that your Gundam related channel isn't just for show.
no the barbatos is actually a old type of gundam hinted by the chest cockpit in the olden days of gundam and much less technologically modern in weapons. Plus mobile workers ha when they around in the later of the gundam timeline.
As someone who just recently gotten interested via my love for the gundam barbatos’ design it is fascinating for me to hear that some people back in the day hated it’s design since from what I am seeing nowadays people live it’s design
As someone who got started with Zeta Gundam (I've even used ZGundam64 as my email address and moniker on RUclips) I am very impressed with your knowledge of the Gundam universe. You have a new subscriber.
***** The only negative thing me and my 'Gundam circle' had to say about IBO before it's launch was 'I hope this doesn't turn into another Rec-G'. The Gundam it self we found over all to be interesting, but not bad. Besides, anybody who judges a Gundam, or anything for that matter, before it's had the chance to prove it self worthy of scorn or not is an idiot. pure and simple.
Lunar Templar I grew really tired of "hope it doesn't turn into G Reco", found it kind of illogical. Mostly because it's a 35+ year old franchise, with new titles constantly adding something new to it. So really comparing or thinking a show coming right after another would be similar makes no sense. My main point would be G Gundam -> Wing -> X
***** Actually, that's not what that means, we didn't like Rec-G, for a verity of reasons, it being a narrative mess, and Bellri being 'Mary Sue'ish being foremost among them. (and Aida being just kinda 'there' didn't help ether) so 'I hope it's not like Rec-G' actually meant 'I hope it doesn't suck' which thankfully it hasn't so far. granted it's not over yet and it could end up being terrible, but I've seen enough Gundam to know if it was gonna suck, it would have by now.
Now this video here is real gundam porn. All those designs to feast your eyes upon. On another note if you're a series that's as old as gundam it would only be natural for Sunrise to make radically new designs to keep things fresh and interesting. As they say variety IS the spice of life.
Gian Carlo Laforteza Yes, they've pretty much have been from the beginning, like the Zeta Transforming, ZZ combining, F91 having a burst mode before Trans AM
***** well yeah, anyways you got plans to discuss other mecha anime. Your first video hinted heavily about that as well as your intros. Keep up the good work!
Gian Carlo Laforteza Yes, it's just there's so much Gundam it kinda is almost overwhelming. I'll eventually transition into more things after I find I gave a semi fine amount of Gundam vids. I plan to also tackle games and live action mecha stuff.
It's also worth mentioning that Gundams usually have two exhaust vents on their chest, usually yellow ones. That seems to be a consistent feature among most of the gundams you showed here, and even in the IBO timeline.
+Zeta Rise I'm sorry dude but that reasoning is bullshit. It moreover seems that there is a trait (just need 1 really) about the gundam physically that feels as if it has some homage to the original, or something of that nature (like maybe being very 'sharp' but having nice gradual curves in the design, though that's just more of a Feddy thing). True enough someone can CALL it a gundam, but I don't see it as a TRUE gundam. If a divine ruler of the whole world goes, "Trees are goats." I think it's fair enough to call bullshit. You don't just have to mindlessly nod your head in approval. Now I also don't think we should throw the other ones under the bus, but sub-categorize them or something. (Idk how word this inoffensively and this isn't what I mean exactly, but there are some gundams that look like they belong in code geass for their wacky proportions and design) Kinda like how you CAN say all Pokemon look like pokemon because they are called so, but each generation almost has a distinctive style overall so you can categorize what gen they LOOK like.
cubbychambers You're not making sense and are exaggerating. Also the whole distinct "sharp" or "curve" part is illogical. Within this franchise various Alternate Universes have different types of designs for their Gundams. Next up, each series has it's own way to say what is a Gundam, G Reco it's based on technology and what they base it on. IBO base their Gundams on what frames they use, as all Gundams use the same frame in this show. Also sorry but that goat tree part is kinda well, dumb. If some random ultimate creator said trees are goats, that wouldn't make sense, in our world we named those things. Also you're leaving out how different languages already have different names for same thing. This is a company, not some God.
How dense are you really? My analogy is pretty simple to get. Sunrise is the God of the universes of Gundam. And the appointed rulers are those who wrote each new show set in to add to each universe, but instead they try to redesign the wheel mid-universe. Also I think you are bundling too much of what you've heard people say "what isn't a gundam" into what I'm talking about. I'm talking the red-headed stepchild outliers like G-Lucifer. Tbh that's the only one I can think of too. Especially in G-Lucifer's case it's kind of like they changed the rules of what seems to have been established as to what a Gundam is. It seems disrespectful to the what we've grown to know. Although I wouldn't be surprised it that was actually intentional now that I think about it. Even then that helps with my idea that it isn't a true gundam and should be sub-categorized at least by UC timeline standards. I won't disagree that Gundam isn't an just a machine, but an idea. But that idea takes very similar forms and even the Zeon knew that. They wouldn't get told it was a Gundam, they'd know just by looking at it.
cubbychambers I'm dense? huh Flaw "It seems disrespectful to the what we've grown to know" " seems", sorry but it isn't. Problem here is that you're taking this personally when it's fiction, writers do what they want.
In my personal logic a gundam is just a high-end suit much like a high-end pc or phone or iron man's suit. I mean it's often the reason why they all stand out throughout the Gundam multiverse.
After buying the G-Lucifer kit, I kinda figured it had something to do with the material the MS is made of, and combat capabilities. I'd like to see more of the mono eye designs, those are bad ass.
ah, Gundam. I'm actually glad that I stumbled upon your videos, Zeta Rise. I know a lot about the Gundam Franchise (though clearly not as much as you) and am glad that there is someone else who shares my enthusiasm. Not just you, either. clearly many, if not all of your followers share the interest. Forgive my excitement, but I do not find many Gundam fans where I am. all of that aside, I have to say that in my honest opinion, those that say that a Gundam does not look like a Gundam, a lot of times end up being Universal Century Purists. Even then they nitpick which UC series' are worth their time to watch because of either date of release, place in the UC timeline, or MS designs. I will say that due to the nature of some of these kinds of fans, I think (personally. it may not be true) that from time to time a Gundam will be purposely designed to "look like a Gundam." take Gundam 00's GN-00-0 or 'O Gundam" for example. not only designed as the RX-78-2 From the original series, as a means of the 30 year anniversary, I never saw complaints about its design when it first was shown.
Well said Rise! It does get tiring hearing people saying "It doesn't look like a Gundam" when as you say, there is no real proper design rules that every Gundam "must" follow. If they creator's say its a Gundam, then its a Gundam. 'Nuff said!
I think setsuna's definition (ignoring the application to people) resounds the original definition of gundam from 0079: "a new mobile suit made to end/resolve the war (in which its built)"
To me a gundam has always been a mobile suit that is made to be better than any others. The RX 78-II wa as made to combat Zeon, the Gundam thunderbolt/ Atlas gundam were both designed to combat a specific units. They are specially designed suits. So technically the Sinanju is a gundam type mobile suit too.
dude love your channel and your videos. you should go into detail with each series or have a video with info about gundam that most or some fans wouldn't know
Tim Ratigan But what more is there than the information I gave? There are particular things I of course leave out since well, some things are gained through just watching them.
What's most important is making sure it stands out from the other series. When you see a mobile suit it should bring up the idea of, "oh yeah, it's from that series."
I find that the post-disaster timeline/iron blooded orphans storyline as in my opinion the best definition for the word Gundam, that being any mobile suite that is built around the Gundam frame.
I like that despite how different a new Gundam might look from past iterations, you can almost always tell what it is. Like how any year of Mustang is recognizable as a Mustang.
Being that the Gundam series is built on a loved but repetative story archs, I look forward the variation of mech designs. When they got the guy who did the Full Metal Panic series to fo 00's design it was awsome. Changing the mech designs and art allow you to each series uniqueness. Regardless of how the storylines make you feel. I kinda wish they did another Mobile Fighter series with art like 00. I hated seed but checked in just because of the mech designs. Can't tell you how much time I spend on MAHQ looking at Gundam and Macross.
What is Gundam? It is that area between Real Robot and Super Robot, a high-performance machine outclassing all others in its era. It is a bridge between the mundane and the extraordinary, fantastic yet grounded. A bridge between what is producible and theoretical in that setting. In a sense, anything can become a Gundam, but only if one is willing to pay a high price. And most of all, its sole purpose. A device of overwhelming yet achievable power made by man for the sake of ending war, forcing the parties in the war back into negotiations.
Wing Zero will always be my favorite, I loved that Gundam from the first time it showed up in the series and then when it appeared on the screen in the movie with the wings.... I got chills
I know it's 'old' but the agx-o4 gerbera tetra was actually the stolen and disguised prototype gp-04. The GP series was a program designed to have 5 suits for specific purposes. After the gp-02 was stolen and the gp-01 upgraded to FB, the gp-03 was deemed sufficient as a general purpose suit. The 01 was a speed/mobility type, 02 was heavy nuclear, 03 was space type specific, 04 was supposed to be general purpose, but after it was stolen, couldn't be upgraded. Then the dendrobium happened. And Cima Garahu was bat shit crazy by this point
I usually just take a general look to before I call it a Gundam, as long as it at least 2 of these features: - 2 eyes -V-fin or Blade antenna -mouth plate (with or without vents) -Chin honorable mentions: -those 'eye bugs' that are usually color red or white -head camera (not too sure on this one for the universal century side) and if not confident enough that it IS or IS NOT because it doesn't have the name Gundam, I look it up. Like the Striker Custom, in the manga it was called a "Gundam Head" so I refer any suit that isn't a Gundam but has the head of one as such. So how do you guys perceive the suits? Zaku Zeta is still counts as a Gundam, since Zeta's head was blown off and it needed a main camera so there's that.
Fun fact: the mitsubishi evo is modeled after the rx78_2 as a tribute for the anime, just look at the grill on the car and that explains why when created they tried to make it as overpowered as possible
I think I’m going to mass to have something really special in its design that makes it different than mass-produced suits. Compared to all the rest of the series, all the Gundam’s from wing really are very traditional and by the book in their appearance, close to the original. Their color is of course different, aside from Wing Zero, but they all have the primary characteristics in terms of shape and facial features.
I always thought it was related to the Japanese philosophy of how a weapon is an extension of one's soul, and the the interaction between the suit and it's pilot was synergistic... like becoming one with God. That, combined with the suit's performance, made it god-like.
It's a bit funny, actually: I was sent to this video because I had asked, "Why is it that different universes just so happen to have similar general Gundam design (two eyes, horns, similar color schemes) and the same Haro design?" Of course, to start, 1.) What would I know, given I only watched the original's timeline up until Unicorn, and 2.) The observation isn't entirely accurate: this video even showcases a few Gundams that didn't seem to follow the convention much at all. I really appreciate this video!
In advance of Zeta there's the Kestrel and Gullinbursti gundams which are monoeyed gundams( don't let the heads fool you those are dummies) and Jupiter built 2 monoeyed gundams in the form of the Amakatsu and the EMS-TC02.
I remember back when I was watching 8th MS team that the EZ8 threw me off because it did look different than RX-78, Zeta and the gundam wing gundams. I had always felt it was the face and having some kind of "V" or horns. Barbatos clearly pays homage to this with it's huge horns so idk what ppl were complaining about.
A year late i know, But I label something a Gundam if: It's used by a NewType(or newtype equivalent), is used to fight to end wars while having a rival who pilots a red Zaku look alike.
Okay, so to summarize Cosmic Era Gundams, they're basically models with very high performance, and the acronym (depending on the suit) was always read as G.U.N.D.A.M-and characters like Kira called a Mobile Suit that had a Gundam head is deemed one. But this isn't true regarding the M1 Astrays due to it being both mass-produced and foam armor platting, unlike the Phase Shift armor Gundams have.
even going the rout of "it doesn't look like a gundam" the Barbatos from my perspective has all the quintessential looks of your typical gundam. so idk how anyone can say that it doesn't look like a gundam.
MOTHERFUCKING WOUNDWORT! I liked you before, but now? Thank god for this video! That machine needs more recognition and love! Thank you for making my night Rise!
can someone explain to me that scene at 3:00 a clip from Turn A Gundam it looked like they were watching a bunch of other Gundam series, I soptted Mobile Suit Gundam, along with Endless Waltz, someone please explain peace✌🏻️
+Jay Duron I'd recommend watching the show to have an understanding of it. But basically, somehow at sometime all timelines lead to the Correct Century of Turn A. All of this is the Dark History, showing the constant struggle of humanity and how it constantly tries to destroy itself.
***** I tried watching Turn A Gundam but its, a bit more weird than a lot of Gundam series I've seen but didn't Endless Waltz come out after Turn A? because it has better animation, and the After colony and, Universal Century 0079 are complementary different, but how would they lead to this so called "Correct century" than is less technology advanced
Jay Duron Jay, as you said, you only tried watching it, a lot of your claims are not making sense. It has better animation compared to Wing (show), especially when you consider Wing used a lot of stock footage. Aside from that you can't really compare the animation quality of a movie to that of a show. Turn A came out in 1999, Wing Endless Waltz was 1997. Like I said, all timelines lead to the single Turn A timeline, we don't exactly know how, but that is how it goes. Essentially civilization always ends the same way, it destroys itself, over and over again. The Turn A is a key to what happened in the past. It is after all the most powerful Gundam as it has destroyed entire civilizations, resetting them. The technology in Turn A isn't better or worse than others, that isn't a logical claim. If you watched you'd see that a lot of the technology they use are from the past, most of their mobile suits are relics of the past which they found. At one point they even found an old military base filled with nukes. In the manga(not translated) they even find a Gundam which is from the After Colony timeline. The Turn A has the Moon Light Butterfly, a nano machine weapon which can expand to the far reaches of space, destroying all in its wake.
Okay, didn't know the Turn A was that powerful, only wish it had a better design thou, and yes Wing does use A LOT of stock footage, but still doesn't make sense on how it led to the Correct Century, even if you and I don't know there just has to be an explanation like, 1)who built the Turn A 2) what Gundam did they find that was from an After Colony timeline, because all the Gundam's at the end of Endless Waltz were destroyed, Epyon still not sure we're Zechs hid it Or maybe they built more Gundam's in the visual novel "Frozen Teardrop" which than years later they found that particular Gundam, but in any case I thought Endless Waltz came out in 2001, but I google searched and your right it did came out in 1997, and the most powerful Gundam's I know would have to be, God Gundam, Epyon, Dark Gundam, Unicorn Gundam, and the Wing Zero with its twin buster rifle, so that's all I suppose, sorry what I said earlier didn't make sense, and what's they mask thing that is on the mouth of a Zaku? I never really know what that's for anyways, but great job on the video and be sure to check out my Gundam Fight Compilation, that's all peace✌🏻️
Jay Duron lol all gundams were not destroyed in Wing, G Unit is a side story in After Colony. A lot of things are answered through actually watching the show.
If it makes the other guys panic and a theme song starts playing. It’s a gundam
There's only one requirement to be a Gundam:
Someone, somewhere in the series, has to say "IT'S A GUNDAM!" whilst gazing upon it.
In terror, preferably.
No!
The only true Gundams are the ones designated by Char and clones!
/s
Save for series in which they aren’t told they aren’t Gundams until later on, in which case they just shout the name of the model name or pilot.
Which is always in relation to there being a V fin. Or something of that sort. Such as the turn a's mustache.
And it has to hav that glowing eyes effect in smoke
So a Gundam's a Gundam because it's a Gundam.
SeihouGhostZ Pretty much, if it says Gundam, then well, it's a Gundam lol.

True, the Hazel actually isn't a Gundam, it's a fake gundam, similar to the D Gundam Zeta Rise mentioned in this video.
Well, considering that the Hazel is a improved version of GM Quel with the appearance of a Gundam, it should still fall in the category as a Gundam. Specially if you consider the fact that the GMs are basically just cheaper massproduced Gundams.
This video gave me flash backs of the one year war

UPDATE:
Post Disaster: Gundams are specialized frames made during the “Calamity War”, and were known for their specialized armor that let them shrug off beam weaponry, and their “Alaya Vijnana” systems, which allowed pilots to control the suits as if they were part of their bodies (as long as they got the proper surgery to obtain “whiskers” on their backs that let them use the system to begin with).
Nicholas Rodriguez well the nanolaminate armor refracts beam weapons so they had to stick with shell firing weapons and physical blades.
Not all Gundams in 00 have original GN Drives. The Arche Gundam, Reborns Gundam and Raphael Gundam all have pseudo-GN drives.
Gshadow007 mhm, or the Seed mobile suits on ORB, they have the heads but they're obviously not Gundams.
Zeta Zaku, best Zeta!
Zeta Zaku for president 2k16!

It would make more sense than Trump Zaku
It so surprising to see a channel that does Gundam content. Its great.
Yeah, I seen a lot of comments that said the G-Self or even more recently the Barbatos doesn't look a like a Gundam and that very train of thought baffles me. Like what constitutes being a Gundam? I'm glad someone made a video about that very thing.
I can understand why some wouldn't think that the G-self doesnt look like a Gundam, but how do some people not see the Barbatos as one?
Hi, Aila, are happy marrying Reiji? What's your kid name?
Reijila.
A Gundam is a superior mobile suit compared to others i think
this channel is a Gundam.
DEATHxTHExKIDx1 heh, well in a way I can always have a new meaning for what a Gundam is, something that changes the mindset of an individual through informing.
You're a Gundam.
I did say "Gundam" a bit too much here when I think about it, heh, oh well.
Haha, told you
How about the yellow dual nozzles notice on the chest pieces of most gundams
Hey Rise I agree with you and I'm not going against what you said but even though I agree that the Turn A is a Gundam I just have to say that it looks incredibly stupid but that's just my two cents on the subject.
I agree with you 1999999 % dude if it's called a gundam then it's *ahem* gundam wing voice: IT'S A GUNDAM
I'm beginning to suspect you just like saying "Gundam". :P
"IT'S A GUNDAM!"
-Cannon fodder before dying at the hands of a Gundam.
"I am Gundam".
-A kurdish Gundam fanboy.
As with most things, the real answer is "it's complex."
The 225677th Fragment of the Man-Emperor of Mankind the only thing that defines what a Gundam is in a series is what the creators put it as because each series as a new universe all on its own except for a course the sequel series or a series that follows a previous one but even still for the most part it's a new universe all on its own with different characters and different Gundams so overall what a Gundam is is going to depend on what the series is in it doesn't have to be a certain shape a certain size has a certain color it doesn't have to be any of that
It is a Gundam when Sunrise says so.
@@Courier-gq6ym pale rider was never actually a Gundam its just an upgraded GM Sniper 2 with parts derived from the Gundam units 4 and 5.
absolutely right on the Turn A's swagger mustache :D
Even though it's arguably one of the most powerful Gundam's ever I still can't take it seriously...
That's what you get when you asked someone who don't know anything about Gundam to design a Gundam.
webbit1024 well Syd Mead designed Turn A and the moonrace mobile suits.
When you have a 2500 HP engine but your design team make a corolla to put it in.
OOOOOHHHHH
I love the look of the Gundams of IBO. When something has been around as long as Gundam has it's nice to change things up so it doesn't get stale.
+WarMachine395
Every new variation that is called a Gundam gives more source material to what a Gundam can look like.
EMS-TC02: laughs in Phantom light.
Yeah, I need this.
he predicted the game 7 years ago
7 years later in the WFM timeline a Gundam is anything that uses the gund format and high amounts of permit, which can harm or kill their pilots
One of my favorite gundams would have to be the Gundam Astray Red Frame. Awesome design.
The RUclips Rookie I agree, it has an awesome design.
Hell yeah!!
The RUclips Rookie Heck al Gundams have awesome designs, except a few. The Double X is great, but the Gundams from Wing are a bit too overspecialized.
+The RUclips Rookie The Astrays are a really good design
+The RUclips Rookie its you again -_-
6:02"Darry Neil Guns, a fan of the Gundam, modified his worker mobile suit to resemble the original RX-78 Mobile Suit Gundam," it wasn't for psychological warfare, the pilot was a huge fan of the original Gundam so he made his mobile worker look like the RX 78,Not for psychological warfare, the hazel Gundam (a gm quel with a Gundam head) on the other hand yes,I thought to clear things out for you guys
RUclips should need more this kind of channel
Have the guts and the brain to make everyone understand some debate isn't even needed in the first place, I salute you O7.
Then again, it is a spin off show and most Gundams have very similar heads of what a typical gundam head would be (except for Nobel Gundam, being more reminiscent to Zeta).
i seee what you mean but Gusion's head looks like a green m&m with eyes.
Patrick Chansy at first I thought u meant fusion, but I was wrong, Gusion definitely looks like a mecha toad o.0 yeah that is pretty much the most out of nowhere gundam out there. looking up a wiki of it, there is a pic of concept art for Gusion and the inside of all the armor makes it look like a typical gundam (mainly the head) but other than that, yeah that is definitely different and pretty much the only thing that connects it to the original is the humanoid design.
well, that looks more like barbatos' inner frame and we don't know unless we get the gunpla.
Gundam is usually referred to a prototype or a special Mobile Suit that has enhanced capabities throughout the gundam universes with the exception of Gundam SEED universe in which gundam is an acronym for the operating system of a mobile suit
To put it simply, a Gundam is a GTR and non Gundams are Priuss.
lmao
Actually Gundams are Ferraris and none Gundam units are either mustangs or Corvettes. Unless they are non Gundam designated test units then they are Lamborghinis.
Damn... That's a lot of Gundams... I'm confused. Here researching because of a new Gundam show called Witch from Mercury.
If you have to say, I believe that the word Gundam in most, are High-performance prototype machine that designed to be hv significant improvement over others, it doesnt matter how it looks like. But the fact is, Gundam has to be more "realistic" than other superrobot. By "more realistic" I mean that it must be have a Gundam-physics that can explain it, Unlike a robot that powered by a infinite-power crystal that left by anicent Gods.
jamesgjt well Gaia Gear Alpha is high end to equal a Gundam but it's not a Gundam.
But what about G Gubdam?... Also the time warping unicorn trio exists.
The Turn A Gundam have infinite energy lol, it doesn't need fuel
Magnificent. Just magnificent. The meanings are more clear now. It really doesn't matter if the design looks different, what really matters is it's purpose as well, and labeling of course. I hope people get to see this video so they can understand, especially Filipinos and other people, 'cause they see every mecha as a Gundam, if they're not educated about it. Once again, this is another piece of proof that your Gundam related channel isn't just for show.
DX Strider Thanks, and yah, I do hope more people see it simply to help with misconceptions which are sometimes spread too much.
***** Sure, I wish to help you in future endeavors, but my Aeronautical course is hard, it's just not too hard. Anyways, good luck with college.
So the Barbatos is a NEWTYPE of Gundam?... Ha just kidding, peace✌🏻️
Have a like. XD
James Powell thanks
no the barbatos is actually a old type of gundam hinted by the chest cockpit in the olden days of gundam and much less technologically modern in weapons. Plus mobile workers ha when they around in the later of the gundam timeline.
Spoiler alert!! The Barbatos is also the first Gundam in the franchise to lose horribly in its last fight in the final episode.
I hated the name 'Julieta' right after. I don't trust anyone with that name starting that name.
What makes a gundum a gundum :dark souls music kicks in
Setsuna is gundam kin
As someone who just recently gotten interested via my love for the gundam barbatos’ design it is fascinating for me to hear that some people back in the day hated it’s design since from what I am seeing nowadays people live it’s design
Setsuna best protag. :^)
Want to know what a Gundam is? It is manime. Plain and simple.
As someone who got started with Zeta Gundam (I've even used ZGundam64 as my email address and moniker on RUclips) I am very impressed with your knowledge of the Gundam universe.
You have a new subscriber.
+ZGundam64 Zeta Gundam sure is amazing, though I'm always iffy of recommending my favorite show to someone when they want to start.

So basically Pacific rim is like gundam turned into an adult version that is more realistic, apart from uprising (we don’t talk about that)
Funny, every one I know likes the 'Duke' Barbados design.
+Lunar Templar Not at first, the design was harshly ridiculed the moment it was shown.
*****
The only negative thing me and my 'Gundam circle' had to say about IBO before it's launch was 'I hope this doesn't turn into another Rec-G'.
*****
Actually, that's not what that means, we didn't like Rec-G, for a verity of reasons, it being a narrative mess, and Bellri being 'Mary Sue'ish being foremost among them. (and Aida being just kinda 'there' didn't help ether)
so 'I hope it's not like Rec-G' actually meant 'I hope it doesn't suck' which thankfully it hasn't so far. granted it's not over yet and it could end up being terrible, but I've seen enough Gundam to know if it was gonna suck, it would have by now.
What I think about "Gundam":
A "Gundam" is the pinnacle of Mobilesuit Technology of it's Generation or ERA.
Gonna subscribe~
I definitely look forward to what new designs they have for gundam, but some designs take longer to love.
***** really? OK I'm excited now
Personally, I love the design of the ASW-G-08 Gundam Barbatos. It has a sleek new design while retaining many classic Gundam styling cues.
WTF?
Barbatos totally looks like a Gundam. Sure, it's a more stylized design, but the traditional gundam facial features are still present.
How about RTX-008,RTX-009,RTX-010, RTX-011 or Duraxyll from SRW 😂😂😂 They're look like a Gundam
Barbatos is easily one of my favorite gundam designs. Cannot wait for season two
What about the fucking mammoth from g gundam, it's literally just a mammoth with a V fin....
max masterson Oh G is a Jem
+max masterson Its called Mammoth Gundam so in the the G Gundam FC universes it consider a gundam, gundam.wikia.com/wiki/GF11-042NSB_Mammoth_Gundam
It's also worth mentioning that Gundams usually have two exhaust vents on their chest, usually yellow ones. That seems to be a consistent feature among most of the gundams you showed here, and even in the IBO timeline.
at least Gundam Barbatos looks like a Gundam.
+Manuel Fernandez So does the G Self and other Gundams, since the moment they're labeled a Gundam, they are a Gundam and look like one.
They wouldn't get told it was a Gundam, they'd know just by looking at it.
cubbychambers I'm dense? huh
Flaw "It seems disrespectful to the what we've grown to know" " seems", sorry but it isn't.
Problem here is that you're taking this personally when it's fiction, writers do what they want.
3:55 That guy just invented "I am Skywalker" meme
In my personal logic a gundam is just a high-end suit much like a high-end pc or phone or iron man's suit. I mean it's often the reason why they all stand out throughout the Gundam multiverse.
Simple, to be a Gundam it must fulfill two criteria:
-Be made of Gundarium
-MUST be of very high performance.
thats it.
Gundarium doesn't exist in the majority of Gundam stories
I will never get used to that amazing intro
If bandai says it's a Gundam, well it's a Gundam
So this is a video explaining Gundams to people that already know what a Gundam is...
Endless Waltz Wing Zero was awesome.
I will say that due to the nature of some of these kinds of fans, I think (personally. it may not be true) that from time to time a Gundam will be purposely designed to "look like a Gundam."
take Gundam 00's GN-00-0 or 'O Gundam" for example. not only designed as the RX-78-2 From the original series, as a means of the 30 year anniversary, I never saw complaints about its design when it first was shown.
Well said Rise! It does get tiring hearing people saying "It doesn't look like a Gundam" when as you say, there is no real proper design rules that every Gundam "must" follow. If they creator's say its a Gundam, then its a Gundam. 'Nuff said!
GinraiPrime666 Not the case look at the astray gundam while called a gundam and even looks like one they aren't because of they are mass produced
So technically the Sinanju is a gundam type mobile suit too.
dude love your channel and your videos. you should go into detail with each series or have a video with info about gundam that most or some fans wouldn't know
+Tim Ratigan You mean my Gundam History videos? Because I already go into detail on them in those videos.
I meant do a video or 2 per series I liked your history videos I just wanted more lol
Don't forget about the Destroy From Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, which was SOMEHOW produced for a total of FIVE identical mobile suits.
"It's A GUNDAM!"
Wing references xD
OMG I CANT STOP WATCHING YOUR VIDEOS (that's not a bad thing)
What is a Gundam? A miserable pile of metal!
Dude thanks--that actually helped immensely. I really appreciate the work you put into this video!
I usually just take a general look to before I call it a Gundam, as long as it at least 2 of these features:
- 2 eyes
-V-fin or Blade antenna
-mouth plate (with or without vents)
-Chin
honorable mentions:
-those 'eye bugs' that are usually color red or white
-head camera (not too sure on this one for the universal century side)
and if not confident enough that it IS or IS NOT because it doesn't have the name Gundam, I look it up.
The Unicorn keeps the red/yellow/blue color scheme. The V-fin is yellow/gold, and the feet and the backpack are blue.
The simple answer it’s a gundam if it big robot that look like samuria
I think I’m going to mass to have something really special in its design that makes it different than mass-produced suits.
Compared to all the rest of the series, all the Gundam’s from wing really are very traditional and by the book in their appearance, close to the original. Their color is of course different, aside from Wing Zero, but they all have the primary characteristics in terms of shape and facial features.
I always thought it was related to the Japanese philosophy of how a weapon is an extension of one's soul, and the the interaction between the suit and it's pilot was synergistic... like becoming one with God. That, combined with the suit's performance, made it god-like.
It's a bit funny, actually: I was sent to this video because I had asked, "Why is it that different universes just so happen to have similar general Gundam design (two eyes, horns, similar color schemes) and the same Haro design?"
Of course, to start, 1.) What would I know, given I only watched the original's timeline up until Unicorn, and 2.) The observation isn't entirely accurate: this video even showcases a few Gundams that didn't seem to follow the convention much at all.
A year late i know,
But I label something a Gundam if:
It's used by a NewType(or newtype equivalent), is used to fight to end wars while having a rival who pilots a red Zaku look alike.
Finally someone who thinks the way I do. Awesome vid man.
There's also the Blue Destiny 01 which is a Gundam but has a GM head, or the Hazels which are just modified GM Quels that have Gundam looking heads.
You know it's a Gundam when it's a Gundam, there's usually a trail of blood
The Gundam is Gundam when Sunrise call them gundam
MOTHERFUCKING WOUNDWORT! I liked you before, but now? Thank god for this video! That machine needs more recognition and love! Thank you for making my night Rise!
2:55 - Aesculapius from the G-Unit side story is from After Colony (Wing series).
I kinda like setsuna's idea in 00. Taking the gundam out of the mobile suit, to apply to an ideal.
people only know ZZ gundam as the MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam but the first ZZ gundam is the Zeta Zaku.
i love your show dude it really helps me out cause i am new to gundam
So if someone asks me "Whats a Gundam?" than what should i say "Its complicated".
We need a videogame where u customize and build your own mobile suite the way you can in armored core
You mean like Gundam Breaker?
can someone explain to me that scene at 3:00 a clip from Turn A Gundam it looked like they were watching a bunch of other Gundam series, I soptted Mobile Suit Gundam, along with Endless Waltz, someone please explain peace✌🏻️
+Jay Duron I'd recommend watching the show to have an understanding of it. But basically, somehow at sometime all timelines lead to the Correct Century of Turn A. All of this is the Dark History, showing the constant struggle of humanity and how it constantly tries to destroy itself.
*****
I tried watching Turn A Gundam but its, a bit more weird than a lot of Gundam series I've seen but didn't Endless Waltz come out after Turn A? because it has better animation, and the After colony and, Universal Century 0079 are complementary different, but how would they lead to this so called "Correct century" than is less technology advanced
Okay, didn't know the Turn A was that powerful, only wish it had a better design thou, and yes Wing does use A LOT of stock footage, but still doesn't make sense on how it led to the Correct Century, even if you and I don't know there just has to be an explanation like, 1)who built the Turn A 2) what Gundam did they find that was from an After Colony timeline, because all the Gundam's at the end of Endless Waltz were destroyed, Epyon still not sure we're Zechs hid it
Or maybe they built more Gundam's in the visual novel "Frozen Teardrop" which than years later they found that particular Gundam, but in any case I thought Endless Waltz came out in 2001, but I google searched and your right it did came out in 1997, and the most powerful Gundam's I know would have to be, God Gundam, Epyon, Dark Gundam, Unicorn Gundam, and the Wing Zero with its twin buster rifle, so that's all I suppose, sorry what I said earlier didn't make sense, and what's they mask thing that is on the mouth of a Zaku? I never really know what that's for anyways, but great job on the video and be sure to check out my Gundam Fight Compilation, that's all peace✌🏻️
Jay Duron lol all gundams were not destroyed in Wing, G Unit is a side story in After Colony.
A lot of things are answered through actually watching the show.
Another great video, thanks Zeta.
