- Born in Ukraine in 1919, Ivan Pavlovich Sereda became a cook in the Red Army, assigned to the 91st Tank Regiment, 46th Tank Division. When a German tank rolls into camp it's just the cook who is left to face it. Undeterred Sereda grabs his trusty axe and goes to work on the war machine. With a mixture of subterfuge and using what he had to hand, the cook incredibly decided that the axe was the right anti tank weapon for the day, much to the shock of the Germans inside.
An amazing story of bravery, a David and Goliath story for the modern age, it's a tale of overcoming incredible odds and having fearlessness and determination win the day.

You don't see too many stories from this early in the war, especially not on the Soviet side, I love seeing the early tanks depicted like the short barrel T-34s and KV-1s and of course, the Panzer 38ts

U forgot to mention that the tank engine was off & the crew need to reignite from outside. That's why they couldn't run away and fell prey to a cook with an axe
That answered the single question I had about this...
We dont actually know, theres no info on why they didnt move the tank since.. well, the captured men went straight to a POW camp.
My personal theory is that the driver must have stalled it trying to leave, and since its a hand crank they were just stuck. Sereda of course was too busy not getting shot so its quite likelly he wouldnt have noticed such a thing. But thats a guess, nobody knows.
Even if they could restart the engine, they couldn’t see where they were going.

If u are a german tank commnder, and spot a soviet cook cooking peacefully then instantly leave rather than regreting later.
The first tanks had the right idea and went on alone. LOL
Point was that he was hiding so commander got out thinking camp was empty. When cook attacked he rush into tank and when blinded and there was fake command going on he though it was a ambush, that camp was hiding whole time, or Soviet troops got back to camp prime time to attack against their tank. Human mind is crooked thing with confirmation bias, so in his head there could been potentially army outside.
"You know, I asked an active-duty Army officer once - if an infantryman had to take on a tank one-on-one, how should he do it?"
"And? What was his answer?"
"'DON'T'. He swore that there's no way in hell a single infantryman could take down a tank by himself."

In Russian story telling the commander repeatedly states he wants Ivan to find meat. Ivan enraged he has to stay behind and knowing he cant find meat then soon hears armor rolling in. He covers the tarp on the tank and sets the tarp on fire while shouting orders. He smokes out the crew and finds a large stash of meat with them. His comrades are surprised to see the meat and mention the capture of the German tank as nothing special and what every soviet soldier can do. Of course they are joking and are truly impressed with his work.
When Soviet Union was a thing, my father was part of a tank/infantry training in russia. There was a tank assault and infantry had to put up smokes and take positions, one guy's equipment failed and also the radio did not work. So he took a shovel and ran towards the tanks, waving the shovel so that the tanks would notice him, and not drive over him. Later when training had concluded my father recalled how the commander went up to the guy who had waved his shovel and said.
"It's not up to me but I would give you a medal for trying to attack a tank with a shovel."

It wasn't German armor, as mentioned, but Czech armor with a German crew, because the Panzerkampfwagen 38 (t) was a light tank from the czechoslovakian manufacturer Ceskomoravska Kolben-Danek, developed before World War II.

The US army actually did a serious study on various such methods during WW2, including using big rocks against tanks. The conclusion was that it did work sometimes, but that it was still a terrible idea.

There are plenty of other channels where you can fact check these stories, and see that these are not embellishments or fiction and not just great animations.

When i read the title I briefly wondered "Yarnhub doing Battletech now?" Because in that setting there's a mech called "Axman" - which is specifically intended for melee against all kinds of targets including tanks.
Like the Tomahawk mech or is it just a different Name for the same model?
@@EMesch if I recall correctly, the Axman was intended as bigger and meaner brother to the Tomahawk.
It's especially funny because a mech running up and meleeing them is one of the biggest threats to tanks in Battletech, especially since many of them are armed with things like PPCs, LRMs and medium-caliber autocannons that perform poorly in close-quarters combat.

Great story and fantastic graphics. Minor note for future: all German tankers wore black uniforms (which conveniently obscures grease marks). Doesn't apply to assault guns.

with all due respect (these videos are great) there is nothing historically significant about random war stories. Do you better understand the context leading up to the conflict, or its effects on the world? do you better understand the unique ideologies of the nations at war? while stories like this are very fun, they are not "real history"; they are entertainment. History is about much more than brave soldiers and battlefield tactics.

From just reading the title, you would expect the Axman to win against the odds, but it would be interesting to watch a video for once that details a historic document for eight and a half minutes about an axeman who hacks away at a tank for eight minutes until the operators finally have enough free time on their hands to shoot him.

There are times were your better off out-smarting your enemy rather than outfighting them. And this man's story is a good example of that. My compliments to Sereda. I'm just sorry he never became a chief like he wanted too.

He will be remembered as The Hero of the Soviet Union which is no small thing, but if you have never seen this video you would never know about him.
