  • It's April 1918 and in the trenches of Northern France the Battle of the Lys, also known as the Fourth Battle of Ypres is underway. 22 year old Aníbal Augusto Milhais from the Portuguese Expeditionary corps finds himself in the midst of the battle. What happened next was an incredible display of courage and bravery that saved the lives of many of his companions both Scottish and Portuguese. After they retreated he continued fighting on alone until he ran out of ammunition. He was given a commendation which described his action as being worth a million men. After which his nickname became "Soldier Millions".

Well we had our own interests , the german were ocuppying land in the portuguese african colonies. Portugal asked england to enter the war a couple years before, but england refused because the portuguese army was obsolete and had to be trained and equipped by england first. England reach out to help Portugal yet again because of the alliance, thats true.

People too often forget that the portuguese at the time kind of hated the british, because of the "Pink Map" ultimatum and the damages done in the post-napoleonic overstay of the british. Which was somewhat reciprocated, as the british despised the new republican government, to the point the british were colluding with germans to take over portuguese Africa pre-WW1, and Portugal was later denied founding status in the League of Nations.
Like the italians, it was mostly the prospect of war spoils that drew the portuguese in, and an eagerness to be taken seriously by those that had walked all over them. But logistical and tactical incompetence of the portuguese High Command, as well as limited forces directed to France (because of political turmoil back home and the more internally important African Front) forced them to be taken under France and Britain's wing.
Things are not all simple mindedly black and white, is what I mean.

Brilliant, both the film and the hero himself. Sadly Portugal's role in the Great War is all but forgotten; they suffered dreadfully during 'Operation Michael', so it's good to see them being commemorated. Milhais himself achieved wonders - his name should be up there alongside Alvin York and the other great names of his era. Thank you for telling his story, and in such a magnificent film.

It’s often said how Yarnhub’s visual effects have improved. As much is true of course, but I always find the camera work and direction impressive. It’s easy to get that wrong, especially in 3D graphics, to make it look as if someone is actually operating a camera within the setting. This with the changing focus on the “lens”, it’s a full package. Great stuff and keep it up!

The well thought out composition and direction goes a long way towards bridging the gap between "simple" and more detailed animation. As a Portuguese WWI enthusiast, this was absolutely amazing! I only knew him with the film "Soldado Milhões" (2018) which tells both this part of his life and post-war time, not sure if the post-war one was historically accurate but it was still great since we lack First World War films.
I liked the detail of a Portuguese soldier praying to what I think it is Our Lady of Fatima, it could possibly be another marian statue though, since the Fatima miracle occured late in the World War, but it was very accurate since most Portuguese soldiers were very religious.
It is sad though that this is probably the only known Portuguese recognition during that war that is recorded. But I think it would be great if Sabaton did a song about him with your video, like you guys did with Christmas Truce! Think about it :)
Also, fun fact! He called his Lewis gun "Luisinha", more or less meaning "Little Louise".

      @@WanderlustZero Long story short.
As a newly established Republic,Portugal wanted recognition and the preservation of Independance so we forced our way into ww1 by making the British invoke our alliance.
We officially entered the war in 1916 despite engaging german forces in Africa since 1914.
2 Divisions were trained and sent to Flanders and France and proactively participated in several offensives and defenses.
At La Lys the overstretched 2nd Portuguese Division was defending a strech of open land meant to be held by 4 full divisions and they were facing some 20 000-50 000 germans.
In the ensuing Artillery Barrage and sturmtroops infiltration attacks the Portuguese line broke in several areas and many Portuguese soldiers were killed and captured.
All Battalion and regimental HQ'S were stormed and overrun with all officers KIA or taken captives, our field artillery was overrun in hand to hand combat and died to the last man.
Around 60%-80% of the Division was lost between killed, captured and wounded but our resistance allowed the Allies to reform the lines.
      Our pay?
Shamed by our British "Allies" and branded cowards for their own failures. They received Portuguese inteligence and officers reports of massive german troop movements but discarded Portuguese reports as dilusional..
After the Battle the British forged reports of units that were stationed in whole other areas of the front stating the Portuguese had fled without firing a shot.
British liason officers countered that stating that Portuguese forces fought valiantly against a superior foe outnumbered over 20:1 and did the best they could and that french forces under similar circunstances were hailed as heroes before.
They too were silenced by the British Goverment.
Portugal finished the war in shambles and abandoned its soldiers in France or german stalags as pows until the early 1920s when Spanish and French authorities pressured the Portuguese Goverment into bringing its pows home.
This is the sad story of Portugal's participation in ww1

As a Portuguese person, stories like this make me proud of where my family and ancestors came from.
We don’t get much recognition in WW1 or just modern day history in general, obviously we weren’t as involved in the war when compared to the British, French, and Germans, and we definitely weren’t the strongest. So it’s always a treat when we do get some attention, we were still responsible for many stuff, like keeping the Germans at bay in Africa.
    Anyways, great video!

You can't even begin to comprehend what an experience like that would have felt like. From the adrenaline of the chaos, explosions and gunfire to the fear laid next to a rotting horse as soldiers walked past speaking German and then wandering around in eerie silence not knowing what is coming next. And yet for a whole generation this was 'normal' life during the war.

Its great to see some international coverage of this amazing soldier that is very unknown nowadays even here in Portugal.
Altho it's sad for me to say , but the ending isnt as happy as portryed in the video , Anibal clearly suffered great mental stress due to his experinces and never got any help for it.
Yes the village was renamed after him, but it also a very poor village in one of poorest most underdeveloped parts of the country, he struggle to support his family living the very harsh life that was common in rural Portugal at the time. He emigrated for a a short while in the 20s and was chastised by his countrymen upon his return ,say that a national hero should never leave the nation and that he should go back to Brasil.
Only 8 of his 10 children every got to adulthood, they recound that he hardly talked about the war, avoiding the topic best he could, refering to it as a time of great sorrow, only wanting to be taken back with his companions by our lady Mary.
He was awarded a lousy pension for the great deed he performed.
After the Start of the Fascist regime of Estado Novo in Portugal, he was forced against his will to be used as a propaganda piece for the state repeatel ,interviews yearly ,parades, apperances at events etc
At the end he died poor and never being given the peace and quite he deserved.

The "trick" with the Million-worth soldier actually came from his name as he's called "Milhais" wich is pronounced similarly to "Milhões" (Millions) in portuguese. So this is why that phrase is so "catchy": "You are Milhais, but you are worth Millions".
On a side note: Sorry, I know I'm being picky about the pronounciation of "Milhais"; the "-lh" just ain't easy for most english native speakers.

    Another great video!!!
A great detail mentioned here its the fact the majority of the Portuguese Line withstood the initial barrage in their trenches despite suffering heavy losses. After the barrage german sturmtroops assaulted and breached the line on several points flanking the Portuguese defenders.
Most Portuguese soldiers of the 1st line were attacked from all sides and killed or captured. Several Portuguese HQ's fell in hand to hand combat with its officers killed or captured and its colours lost.
Even the Portuguese artillery fell in hand to hand combat after firing direct shots at charging German troops.
Between 70-80% of the 2nd Portuguese Division became casulties between killed, wounded and captured and the division was absorved by the 1st Portuguese Division.
Right after the battle the British decided to blame the Portuguese Division wich was understrenght, had been fighting nonstop for a long time, was holding a flat terrain area meant to be held by 4 full Divisions but was unstead defended by 1 understrenght Portuguese Division and 1 British neighbouring division.
Portugal was shamed by the British to cover their own failure to reinforce the front after repeated inteligence reports by Portuguese raids.
    Least we Forget.

My great grandfather, Luis José Simões was a Midshipman in the minesweeper Augusto Castilho that was sunk in October 14th 1918 by the German U-boot U-139. The Commmander of the German submarine was Lothar Van Arnault de La Perierre, who still detains today the record of enemy tonnage sunk. My Great Grandfather was one of the few to escape unscathed and reached São Miguel island a few days later. He later wrote a book about the subject and was decorated with a War Cross. Unfortunately for me my Aunt donated the decoration to the Navy Museum, but I do have his book published in 1922 as well as several pictures taken by the submarine garrison.

The true and full history of Soldier Millions in the Battle of La Lys it is much more incredible, than the facts already described. In the public tv interview, he counts that after the massive bombing, the Germans started the invasion, yet when soldier Milhares looked deeper, he realized that the first german line advancing were using Portuguese uniforms, so he ran to his Scotish companions and asked: - do you recognized them? - They said that they were Portuguese. Yet Milhais suspected, so he waited and when they were closer, he saw that they were Germans using Portuguese uniforms, taken from the deads in the first line. When he saw that the famous pointed German helmuts were now visible following them, he shot his muchine gun and killed them all. In fact, he killed all the enemies from the 3 invasions attempts. But this is just an episode, because, the bombing continued and than Luso and Scotish soldiers were hidden in a bomb hole, without arms and ready to be prisioners. That was when another amazing iniciative from Milhais was putted in practice, he told them for waiting until the Germans start to making them prisioners and then for they to lie in the ground. When the Germans came all confident for making so many prisioners, that was when they became very visible and that was when Milhais who was hidden with his Lewis gun ready, he started to shut and he killed all the Germans (about 200). After the shooting the Scotish and Portuguese soldiers got up and started to ran in direction to the allies lines. Not Milhais, he still stayed alone during 3 days, until no munition could be find anywhere. This can be seen told by himself in the public tv interview (he showed remarkable humility. because didnt even told his stories to his companions, it was the Scotish major that he saved that told the first recounts of his deeds). There was more battles and great actions from the Soldier Millions during WWI. See his interview here: ruclips.net/video/NLapXBWGUKw/видео.html
