I’ve actually come to appreciate this guy’s brutal honesty, we need more of that in the industry.
I have driven Base and own T for the last one month . I drove S and most of people like me who live in Urban area don’t need that much power . T is definitely special no doubt about it . Porsche built quality and handling is next level . Porsche never sells Macan as sports car . It’s a beautiful stunning mid sized SUV . Majority of people don’t need S . Every Porsche is unique and special and so is base Macan
I ordered a T with options that costs as much as a base gts, for family. macan T with air suspension and optional brakes is the gts without the engine. It is fast enough for many people , also the ride quality and handling are superb. Most people don't need the power of the V6 for many reasons.
I totally agree . I strongly disagree with Nick . I don’t even if he drove one . Reading specs from paper is very easy 😂
You nailed it Nick! I've loved Porsches for 50 years. And when I finally got to the age when I could afford one, I recognize I'm also a bit of sucker paying for it. Cheers mate.
Same here bud.😔.
Got the coin to order my dream since I was 17yo.. 53 now..
But just feel the targa 992 may never be ordered..
There like taking the Mickey.”
The extras are just overwhelming overpriced..
And how they sell there new GT cars is sooo unfair..
The guys with all the money buy these special GT cars then flip them..
So sad 😞
@@Only-one-life-68 Porsche at its best was Always the base models. If customers Don't get it... Their problems.
Try a base Boxster or if you really want a flat 6... The gts. 😉
A base carrera s is literally all the car you need. Arguably more fun than the faster models in the real world as well. I for one know I don’t need a gt3 to drive light to light.. Targas, you just gotta get lucky and find one.
@@lollypop9580 exactly... every base Porsche is very fun to drive (save maybe for the Cayenne, which is a bit heavy for the V6 that it has)... even the base RWD Taycan is a blast to drive ...
I agree. Such a cynical branding exercise.
The reveal of the Macan T felt like a fever dream, didn't see it coming at all. They should've maybe called it a platinum edition instead like with the Panamera and Cayenne. I really feel like the names Porsche has used for their luxury cars lately take away from the specialness of the sports cars. First the Cayenne Turbo GT and now this T
I rather liked Platinum editions 😂
These are no where near in the same class as the almighty Turbo GT.
Agree they flushed the “T” distinction down the toilet. Why Porsche why.
To be fair this is what people said about the 911T too when it first came out. Only a marketing gimmick.
@@essel23fly it’s true that they said that. But it was also true that the Carrera T had really cool performance features that the base Carrera could not get. Shorter gear ratios, lightweight glass, Torque vectoring along with pse and other carerra S type options like rear wheel steering made it interesting.
@@floorit4443 I’m ok with it because those that are in the know, know exactly what the T stands for on a Porsche vehicle. The 911T will still have its place. Porsche is just trying to pump up base Macan sales and after all, these added options do make the Macan more “driver focused” at a reduced price which is what the modern T badge is about anyways.
@@floorit4443 For most of the options you mentioned, they are not really performance oriented (if measured by acceleration, cornering). Instead they are more about driving engagement, and that's the real reason why T is special. A Carrera T with all these options can never outperform a Carrera S but it's definitely more fun to drive
Love this....honesty, wit, charm and jumping drone-chasing dogs! You should have your own Netflix show.
Went and ordered some towels, can't wait to try them out. Keep it up, Nick!
Nick, would love to hear you talk about the upcoming electric Cayman and Boxter.
Love your honest and straight forward opinion on Porsche Nick. Can’t wait to get my hands on my new Macan s, hopefully in June. Would love to have the T interior as an option for the macan s. Keep up the good work and I would love a review of the new macan s.
Planning on ordering a Macan S as well this summer. the 2.9L engine makes it much more appealing that the previous 3.0L
Just ordered 12 month wait already waited a lifetime lol
Another great video Nick, always informative and entertaining.
Thank you for clarifying PTV plus especially on the Macan because I felt like I was missing out.
Not too many people actually talk about this particular option so I'm glad you covered it.
Don't listen to him :) go drive both cars blindly and you'll see a massive difference on curves
Favorite channel on RUclips! Since my new Macan S was not on that ship (shew! sorry to others!), I ordered my 3 Nick Murray recommended dry towels / washing towel to have ready for my new S. Obviously, I think the S is still the way to go if buying a Macan. Thanks Nick for keeping us excited, yet levelheaded about Porsche. Spring will be here soon.
Interestingly - owning a well-optioned base 2020 Macan, and a 2021 Macan GTS - I really enjoy the base. The throttle response is quicker on the base to the point where it "feels" like the base is faster than my GTS, even though it's really not. I find that carving corners in the Adirondacks is equally as fun with my base as with my GTS. The GTS has too much complicated tech to break. I think a well optioned base is more smiles per mile.
Thank you, Timothy. The actual turkey is the Macan GTS, which I traded for the 2021 Macan, 2 liter EA888 engine, for the very reason you say here. When I drove home my new GTS, I called the dealer and said, “where’s the torque?” I’ll tell you where it is… it’s in the high revs, which sucks. Give me a low-end torque engine any day. The EA888 engine has the best low-end torque unless you’re comparing to a diesel. Further, the T model has a tuned EA888 which provides even more low-end torque. Only one caveat: You need to put about 12-15,000 miles on the car to break it in. Then it magically releases more torque and higher gas mileage.
On you tube, search 2021 Macan base model on the autobahn, and you’ll be blown away by what this engine can produce on the highway. And, the T is even faster!
2:49 Robb Report such a great magazine *snickers and breaks eye contact*
Nice to see you back Nick
Porsche Macan T? More like the Macan't
literally was going to order MT and this video popped in the search.....so grateful for the analysis Nick
Nice to hear from you Nick. Looking forward to the live stream.
Very good cost/benefits analysis, Nick. This should be very helpful for people who are not familiar with the Macan line of products.
Bought a rapid dry towel last year and can confirm it’s an awesome product.
Always a great video, thanks Nick
I sooo agree with you Nick! in fact, your comments have just reassured me that ordering the S was the right decision 😊
And nice to see you back Nick!
Completely agree with you on the Macan T, seems that it is just another marketing gimmick from Porsche. Hoping to see a video soon when you get a chance to drive the Macan S as I am strongly considering purchasing one sometimes this summer. Excited for the livestream tomorrow!
It’s definitely a gimmick. But Porsche people buy gimmick after gimmick so I don’t blame Porsche for making these cars! Capitalism.
Nick has had a couple of S’s. Check the video archives…
@@edhooksjr1230 I already watched those but the new '22 S has the 2.9 L engine in it and curious how much of a difference it makes compared to the previous 3.0L
@@Alex.AL_26 The 2.9 is superior to the 3.0. I drove the 3.0 previously then the GTS with the 2.9. It's better.
I love that someone like yourself is asking these questions. It too often feels like others just blindly applaud every decision by Porsche. Well done!
Nick- honest appraisal of Porsche's motives. My Cayman was delivered in January. My brother kept saying the boat was going to sink after waiting for almost 5 months. Luckily different ship.
Nice to have you back Nick. Regards.
Great content as usual.
Looking forward to your thoughts on first bits of 992.2 news.
Even though I have zero interest in getting a SUV, I loved watching this entire video because... of the highly entertaining way you explain the ridiculous options vs the sensible choices. I would love to be a fly on the wall in the room when a Porsche executive is made aware of this video :-)
The Porsche executives do not care. They have been running the pricing scam for decades and pretty much have huge waiting lists for their vehicles the world over. As long as the brand is associated with performance and exclusivity, and it is, they have zero worries. From what I read trying to get a new Porsche today is nigh impossible and the pre-owned vehicles are going for sky-high prices.
@@cvn6555 Somebody said on a forum that the average Taycan owner makes $600k/year, but that's a little skewed when you know that people like Bill Gates own a Taycan ...
@@cbatiau2528 I mean, they go for six figures or so. I wouldn't pay that much for a vehicle right now but I can see that as being pretty close to what the average buyer makes.
Great video. What add-ons would you suggest (think are worth the money) if I went with the Macan S?
Another 1000 subs to 200K, well done Nick. Can't wait for the live broadcast Sunday. Will you be posting advance notice on RUclips for us to bookmark, please?
Assuming your thoughts on ptv for the Macan are the same as having it on a 4wd taycan?
Nick is my favorite RUclipsr. I wished he could quit his day job and do all RUclips all day long. Thank you, Nick!
Agreed , he’s a nice guy … I seem to have been watching him for years !
Hey nick ! Do you think the base model taycan needs sport chrono package ?
In Portugal, the Macan T costs 5k more than the base Macan. However the the Macan S costs 20k more than the T.
In the USA and other markets this version might be a mixed feeling. But here in Portugal is probably the best value for money out of the three .
same in Brazil, better a Macan T than a base Macan with options......
Same in Poland
Same in Spain
Same in Australia S is $130000, T is $111000 both with no options
Good to see you Nick.
Well done Nick. I agree, why pay more for a few extra bits, but no increase in performance.
Looking for my new and first Macan... after looking your videos the 'S' sounds the right to choose. Appreciate your transparency on this topic.
It both makes me glad I ordered a base model and that I didn’t get the t. Also id still say I am am enthusiast despite getting the base, I just wanted a fun to drive pothole proof car faster than my current car. Which it is.
Good heads up on the Macan T. Will be ordering the new wash towel. BTW, I cut my Rapid Dry Towel in half. Seems to be a little easier to use that way.
Autogefühl
Has a Macan T review where he drives the car. Interesting to compare the different opinions.
Great videos. Do you think the Porsche Macan Base Model needs PASM? Does having PASM help with body roll? Or is it just a waste of money selecting this option for a Base?
Man, I missed you Nick 😊
Can you spec a Macan S with the most minimum of what you think are necessary options?
Nick did you remove Tui/Smudge paw prints off right rear tail lights ?!
Is there any option on a Macan S that is a must have? I can’t find one. Even the air suspension is not that important. Everything else seems to be cosmetic in nature.
Love when you wash the car and dogs are running around s and t!
Bring a Heli episode Nick!
Looking forward to the live stream! I have a question on my inbound touring!
8:01 PTV+ is a rear axle brakes feature that improves rotation during cornering. Going from RWD to AWD has nothing to do with that behaviour. Hope this helps.
I doubt a rear brake is applied on normal corners, so it does nothing unless you can lose traction on one rear tire. it might be helpful at slow speeds on snow.
How many Macan commuters do you suppose will get their cars so sideways on a public road that PTV would ever come into play?
I agree, PTV+ works on SUVs too. It doesn't matter if it's a 2wd or awd vehicle.
@@snikwadRR it works, producing excessive wear to brakes... sh-awd from acura does the same without any side effects
@@alfaromeo272 it has an active locking differential component. That does most of the work, before there is brake intervention. The brake wear is not much.
Great video Nick. Some great humour.
The towel ad is definitely the highlight .
Nick, the PTV+ includes an electronically controlled limited slip differential to distribute power to the rear wheels as well as a brake application system. Four wheel drive distributes power to the front or rear, as per the little display on the dash… to quote Porsche…”Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus). It works with a variable torque distribution on the rear wheels and an electronically regulated rear differential lock. PTV Plus optimises steering response and precision by selectively applying brake pressure to the left or right rear wheel.”
Exactly, but has it ever done anything worthwhile on an AWD SUV?
Exactly. Yet another Porsche option that isn’t well understood. I can tell the difference in a sharp high speed turn vs the loaner cars I’ve driven. Might have some utility on fire roads or snow, don’t know.
I think it’s universally recognised that limited slip diff definitely helps traction and handling in the dry and particularly in snowy or muddy conditions - it shifts torque to the wheel in an axle with most grip, thousands of sports car and off road drivers can’t be wrong! It’s typical of Porsche to dumb down their technology descriptions so that the average person can understand it - or not, it seems!
Love the car wash and towel plug at the end... Pity I can't get them here in Malaysia!!!!
You know you are a real fan when a Nick Murray rant refreshes you like a tall glass of cold water. He speaks the truth.
I can't agree more with you. When I saw what was about the Macan T I thought it was a complete waste of money, and when I saw what the 992 GTS was all about, I thought the same about you said! Love your perspectives! I would love to see your thoughts on the Levante GTS (Modena S for this year)... saludos desde Colombia!!
First Sunday without NFL football, nice timing Nick. I'll be joining the live stream 🙂 And good informative video as always. I didn't even know the base Macan has the Golf engine. Now it makes sense they're kind of cheap 🙈
Straight to the point 👍🏻
Does it mean that different tale pipes and nice seats don`t improve the driving experience???
What are the flashing lights always in the background ?
Great commentary on the new T. Love the glasses. Can you reveal the brand?
Hello Nick I have a question for tomorrow but might not be around at two do you think the cayman t is too slow some people are saying it’s better to get the s but I like the features on the t what do you think. Thanks!
I’ll help Nick answer this question (although, I’m obviously not speaking for him or anyone else for that matter):
I believe, unless they’re going to stroke a check for your car or make the payments, they’re entitled to their opinion. I might listen to all types of opposing opinions regarding cars, just to get perspective or ideas, but I ultimately make the decision that suits my needs best.
In the case of the Cayman T (or 991.2 Carrera T), I would imagine that many people miss the point. It really is an enthusiast choice, and resale value (keep this strange market we’re currently in, out of the equation) will support that statement. I ordered a base 718 Cayman in 2017 with the Sport-Tex seats (If my memory serves me correct, only came with a full leather interior at that time, which made it an expensive option), manual transmission, and PASM (I ordered it with a bunch of other options, which are not relevant here, since the 3 most important options are listed above. Aside from wheels.). Great car, but I was waiting for the release of the Cayman T when I took delivery of the base Cayman in 2018. I loved the 718, but I do change cars often, so I’m 3rd replacement car since that Cayman. Which finally brings me to an answer! I recently acquired a 2019 718 Cayman GTS. I was originally shopping for a 997.2 Carrera S or GTS, but prices started climbing and before I knew it, I was about to buy a 2011 Carrera GTS with 40k miles, 4 previous owners and a $90k price tag. Thankfully, the car sold, so I ran to the happy place of a newer car with a lower likelihood of staring at a $10k shop bill for things I never knew existed.
When shopping for a 718 Cayman last month, I was only looking at a GTS or T. The T was a great bargain, because it has all of the sport options I would want, and I can always modify to increase power. The T was holding such a high resale value, that the 2.5 GTS was not that much more $.
So, I opted for a GTS with a manual transmission and Alcantara interior. Moral of the long story, the Cayman S is a great car, but it’s not for me. I wanted to have all the sport options that dial in the already great Porsche to a finer detail. That was important to me! That is not going to appeal to everyone, but the T and the GTS were made for someone like me (or someone like you, if my reasoning made sense to you).
The Macan T in this video, that’s something entirely different……
I thought the PTV+ referred to an electronically controlled LSD (i.e. a wet multi-plate clutch in the rear differential with an electric motor to increase/decrease the pressure on the clutch plates and control the amount of slip/drive across the differential.
good to see you washing your car with the convertible roof up. ;-) looks like you had a couple of supervisors checking to see if you were cleaning it properly.
Agreed on most of your points. Not a fan of the T being carried over to the Macan. As for the options you criticized, I specifically looked for a GTS that had PTV+ and Sport Chrono. With PTV+, I have only been able to identify the inner rear braking effect occasionally. It happens when you throttle through tight turns, which feels strange to do on a top heavy SUV, but that’s where I’ve been able to sense it kicking in the most. It helps to snap the car around a bit sharper. Other than that, the GTS is pretty well planted at high speeds on constant radius turns (much more so than Base and S model loaners that I’ve had) and I honestly have no clue if PTV+ is doing any of that work or if it’s the GTS combination of ride height, PASM, or maybe differences in tires. As for Sport Chrono, given that Sport Mode comes standard (an absolute must have/must use button due to the Macan’s laggy throttle response and the PDK’s propensity to upshift way too early to improve MPG, even at the expense of lugging the engine), this button gives you 95% of what you need to make the Macan feel sporty, however, on spirited drives (for those of us who use the car in that way), Sport Plus which is only available with Sport Chrono has been a super fun option. Even though I only use Sport Plus 5% of the time, I think I’d make sure to option it no matter what. If your Macan is only doing daily commuting duties, there’s absolutely no need for Sport Chrono.
Great rant . Agree Macan T is a pointless exercise.
I’d love to see a 911 T with the 4.0 from the Cayman/Boxster. I might even cancel my Cayman 4.0 order for that…
Totally agree!
Wow...will be buying the new wash towel. Should save lots of time! I have the rapid dry towel. It is excellent and huge!
Same, the rapid dry towel is super nice to work with.
How long before Porsche introduces the TS and slots it in between the S and GTS?
I have a base Macan and love it( also have a 911S and Cayman). The way to get the engine humming is to use Cobb tuning- it really works; adds 20+ HP and improved response. Also, upgrade the brakes and change to 19" wheels and tires. But after all that I guess I should have bought an S !! Oh well, next time.
I've also got the base Macan but with a Evolve Technic ECU tune 37+HP it feels more aggressive in the acceleration from 2000RPM onwards and happy with the power but because i never driven an S I'm not sure how much quicker the S would be though the ECU tune costs maybe $1300US
You mentioned San Francisco in your video! My hometown. Thanks-a-plenty!
I agree after driving the base, S and GTS. The base is fine car and handles well with adequate power but you need to step up to the S for something special. It’s all about how you spec these cars out as you can spec a base to 100K if you want, but if you’re careful you can get a really nice S for about 80K. The S is the sweet spot giving you enough power and handling and please remember these are still SUV’s not 911’s. My S is on order hopefully for June delivery with no more fiery mishaps:)
MacanT be seen buying one, especially at that price. But, that interior is lovely.
I would prefer to purchase the base Macan and spec it to my liking, “a la cart”. I would probably spent the $7000. But, it would be my choice of options, not what Porsche says I need or want. I couldn’t care less if there’s the letter “T” besides the Macan logo or not.
I do like to T interior package, would be nice if its available in the S :)
Good video. Just bought a CPO 2018 Sport Edition which has PASM and air suspension. It drives like a GTS, but yes, with a GTI engine. For doing SUV things around town and on road trips, it’s more than enough engine. Considered buying a new Macan S, but optioned out it’s easily $80k. Too much money, not worth 2x what I just paid for the SE. Would rather save my pennies for a 718 GTS. My criticism of the Macan T is it’s missing the air suspension. There’s a huge difference between the steel coil sprung Macan and the air suspension. As you said, the Macan is a great luxury SUV that’s fun to drive…for an SUV. Having said all that, I agree with you the $10k to $15k price delta between a Macan T and S models makes the Macan T a tough sell. I bet it drives very nice though.
Found a great use for the Macan T!
Buy 4 of them so your dealer gives you a GT3 Touring allocation
Stuff like PTV etc makes sense if you consider that this is also Porsche's competitor for hot / hyper hatchbacks. Macan is less SUV and more large hatch / crossover.
Had a good laugh 😂 watching the dogs running around in high speed edit
Also: Macan T stands for Turd 💩
T is the “S line” for Macan
What happened to your shop? I would love one of your t-shirts. Thanks! Mary
Good points
Fortunately our 2022 Cayenne won’t be built until around March 1st. Yes, trading in our 2018 Macan S as we need the rear seat room for grandchildren car seats. It just was too uncomfortable in the Macan. Please let us know when you might have a meet and greet. Take care. Best regards.
911 Turbo S is awd with PTV. It improves cornering
Well…
The best portion of this video was/is … when your dog TUI looks up at the drone at the end 😜👍☺️
Isn't Tui nicking and scratching the paint every time the paws go on the car?
Hey Nick , where did you get that t shirt , lower your expectations, was it in Auckland .
My store
I believe the ptv + will give you the limited slip differential, and non ptv + will be an open diff. Limited slip diff will get better traction in inclement weather.
Yes but keep in mind this car has the Porsche AWD system that will cycle up to 80% of the power to any wheel that has grip.
As of today the prices in 🇨🇦 for the Base, T and S. $60,800, $66,200 and $73,400 for the S, it’s a considerable jump, $5400 from the Base to the T and $7200 from the T to the S, I agree if it was a $3k increase for the S then I would definitely consider it 🤷🏼♂️. Also 🇺🇸 has ACC now included along with Power Steering Plus but here ACC is $1130 and PSP $310 🤦🏼♂️🤷🏼♂️. Thanks for your honesty but the T still looks interesting for me, I drove the Base and the S and yes the performance power of the S is amazing but I found the Base pretty good also for our needs.
Hey Nick! It's been a while since we chatted. I cannot stop laughing at your license plate frame in the wash video ad at the end of this video. Please, please tell me where you got it! I laughed almost non-stop for 2 minutes.
I made it myself
@@NickMurray Well that makes me sad, unless you want to make another one that I can buy?!? I can drop buy in my 911 GTS to pick it up, but I know you also hate the GTS concept...oh well. 🤣
Australian Macans are at different price points. Base Macan $99778, Macan S $ 123822. Perth prices. So that's a BIG $24000 difference. I have a 2020 Base Macan with the Sports Chrono which I optioned along with a few other things. The little wheel on the steering column is a delight to use ... at the traffic lights and overtaking. For the price it was well worth it to have easy access rather than fumbling around the centre consul. And you get sports plus as well.
I have the same car as you in VIC with a Evolve Technic ECU tune so from 185kw to 213KW (claimed on website) which costs around $2000, It feels quite good and powerful not sure if it's as quick as the S as never driven one but if it almost is as some claim then that would mean I spent $2000 not $24000 for similar speed and power.
I think it would be nice to have the Audi TTRS/RS3 2.5L inline 5 turbo 400hp engine in the Macan, replacing V6, odd number of cylinders have a unique and better sound than even number cylinder cars!
Hey Nick, do a good ol' fashioned house tour already. It's been over 2 years since you did the last tour.
And this time don't skip the BASEMENT!
@@pepperpepperpepper yeah, I totally forgot about that part.
Hey Nick, I hope you're well. What do you think of makers like Singer and their cars? Are they just unobtanium not worth lusting over, or do you think they're genuinely the best of what a 911 can be? Something in between? Take care.
Well they only make a handful a year so really unless you have a million $ to spend on a car and years to wait they are not even worth thinking about.
Porsche could have at least boosted the 4 cylinder horsepower to 315 like they did in the Golf R. Then it would have been a more compelling argument. Good honest review as always.
The boat and the Macan T are both part of the Porsche fire sail/sale
Spot on assessment! Might as well save some $ and get a Audi Q5 base.
It’s going to be good for 2nd hand!
The only thing I like about the Macan is the storage space and it looks better than the Taycan imo. What I really want is a fully EV Panamera GTS Sport Turismo. The closest thing to that is the Taycan GTS ST, which has less space and I’m not a fan of the looks. My compromise is to drop the EV requirement and go ICE or hybrid Panamera. Rumors aside, I’d be worried they kill the Panamera before adding an EV option. I really don’t want an SUV. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
I have the ehybrid Panamera and it's a fabulous car. Have a Taycan Turbo S on order and due for final spec. I've just put it back a year until range is sorted. If in a year it's not sorted I will put it back again. Until range is 500 miles the Panamera beats it hands down, maybe still will and sounds fabulous with the sports exhaust.
Some options that Porsche charges for are even free in other cars. My Suzuki Swift Boosterjet has folding electric rearview mirrors included, free, lol.
