Fun to drive, but there’s a better Macan model than this (Porsche Macan T 2023 review)

  • We review the 2023 Porsche Macan T, a handling-focussed special edition of the German sporty SUV - but is it the spec you really want?
    The Porsche Macan is offered in four flavours: the four-cylinder base model and slightly sportier Macan T, and then the more polished and fast V6 models - the Macan S and GTS.
    While the Macan T is marketed as a handling special, being quite a bit lighter than the sixes especially over the front end, the V6 models also have brilliant handling … so this isn’t a real advantage for the T, which is also much slower.
    We say go for the S model, or the GTS if you really like alcantara.
    The Macan competes with midsize luxury SUVs like the Audi Q5, BMW X3, Mercedes GLC and Range Rover Evoque.

    While there's no such thing as a bad Macan, there are great Macan specs…but they have the 2.9 V6 engine, not this 2.0-litre four-cylinder.

    As a Macan T owner this is very fair review. I do agree the S is better in terms of performance but there are folks like us who care more about the badge than performance and Porsche clearly knows they have a market for folks like us. Side note, everyone who has complimented the car never questioned why we got the T vs S. They had no clue. So yes if you care about performance, grab the S. If not, you will love the T :)

      I got the t because I found a 1 year CPO with 4k miles at a heavy discount with full options... Saved a boatload since it's a 23 before the silly price increase. Basically I paid 30k less than of I bought a new S.

  • @DJLaro
    @DJLaro Год назад +10

    I went ahead and got the T. Why?
    - I have a 911 already so the power is not as important.
    - Test drove T vs S. T is more agile (less weight over the nose improves the dynamic in sharp turns).
    - Also test drove the base vs T. Found that the T was pleasantly more firm.
    - Then, it came to comparing the price after spec'ing the car. T came to $9k cheaper after I built both.
    To each their own. Although the S is clearly the better car, some may be better served with a T. My recommendation is to build and test drive both before deciding on a model.

    • @chasingcars

      @@sam8519 I really really like the T interior and the seats it comes with. You get a generous amount of leather, silver stitching and the sport tex is really great both for summer and winter. The seats hold you in really well too if you want a sportier ride.
      Other than that, I don't think there is much you MUST get but spend on the options that make you happy. The only thing I would really recommend is at least a sunroof (looks better and helps with resale).

    Black & Leather package, Black
    Adaptive air suspension with levelling system and height adjustment incl. Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) with a ride-height reduction of 10mm
    Panoramic roof system
    Tinted LED taillights incl. light strip
    Exterior package in exterior colour and in Black (high-gloss)
    Sports exhaust system (incl. sports tailpipes in Black)
    21-inchRSSpyderDesign wheels
    It's worth noting that despite these extras, the price of your Macan T was still $13,000 cheaper than the starting price of a Macan S

    Thanks for this review. I’ve owned a Macan S and a GTS, and I have to disagree with one point you made about options. The 18 way seats are a PITA. The side bolsters make them much harder to get in and out of. And yes, the 8 way seats are not good either.
    But, the box to check is Premium Package Plus. It adds 14 way seats, a sunroof, ventilated seats, front memory seats, keyless, heated front and rear seats, and some other great goodies.
    Love the color of the test car!

  • @effa114

    A very fair review. I’m intrigued by the T, but agree most would be better served by the V6 models. The problem is always the “comparably equipped” part… to add the performance goodies to the S gets you way beyond a T with modest cosmetics/luxury options.
    And then if it’s only the 2.0T, it’s hard to resist the Stelvio and save even more.

    How are you going much faster? Where? On what road? If I really wanted a fast car, I wouldn't get an SUV. I tried the S - it was great. But under 50 same as Base. And at 85-90 on a highway, the same. Besides launching and hearing the exhaust, please explain how the S's power matters in the real wield. Porsche handling matters. And 260hp is enough to activate those dynamics.

    You don’t need a V6 on the Australian roads. Where are you going to speed? The faster German cars are designed for the Autobahn’s and not Australian speed limits. Also you cannot get any insurance for track days. In addition a Macan S with the same specs and extra’s as the Macan T will cost you over 140k. Hence why I got the Macan T.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  Год назад

      That’s quite a simplistic view of performance. I’m not talking about autobahn speeds - I’m talking about absolute effortlessness in daily tasks; pulling onto motorways, overtaking on country roads; driving up steep hills. Luxury cars are about more than just adequate performance as much as anything else.

    The base Macan should be compared to the BMW X3, Jag fpace, Audi Q5, Volvo XC etc. Is it better than these cars? I believe so.
    The Macan S, yes it’s better but it’s $30k dearer, is the engine note worth that? 🤔

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  Год назад +1

      It's far from just an engine note. It's also ~50% more performance, higher refinement and presumably stronger residuals. I'd prefer a more lightly-optioned S model to this highly-optioned T (more expensive than a stock S!)

  • @keironcsmith
    @keironcsmith Год назад +2

    This review sounded like you just love the S no matter what.
    You drove an optioned out T and go on to say it’s way more expensive than a base S, obvious. You mentioned the T is heavier than the base but failed to mention it’s lighter than the S and handles better. The base T comes with nice options as standard. The only real reason people should get an S over a T or a base is because of speed, power, sound or prestige.
    There are people simply don’t care about heaps of power and acceleration so when you make your videos the way you do, you’re coming off as if the S is what people should get.
    You’re saying the S is a better Value than the T but that’s not accurate either. The value in these cars depends on the drivers wants and needs.

    • @chasingcars
      @chasingcars  Год назад +1

      Frankly it sounds like you’re the one whose mind is already made up! Sorry, but my expert opinion is that the S is a significantly better all-round vehicle for a very fair upgrade cost for a far superior engine. I’ll hand it to you - you have to take maybe a 2% handling penalty to go to the V6. Worth it.

    • @keironcsmith
      @keironcsmith Год назад +2

      @@chasingcars dude stop trying to convince everyone the S is a significantly better all-round vehicle. The only major difference a base S has over a base T is power. Fun fact is not everyone cares about power, acceleration or speed. Some people would rather save a little and get a base T that comes with nice upgrades as standard, or upgraded T with more features, than to get a base S or upgraded S that would cost more than a T if customized similarly.
      You’re hellbent on trying to convince everyone to get the S and it shows, but in reality you sound like a bad sales rep trying to convince everyone to get an iPad Pro 11 inch over the iPad Air 11 inch.
      Everyone has different wants and needs. For what it’s worth, take the criticism and do a better unbiased review the next time!

    • @ShawnSheaCanada
      @ShawnSheaCanada Год назад +3

      @@keironcsmith This is absolutely true. Everyone keeps saying the S is only $6K more than the T....why buy the T. I just purchased a T and am coming off of an SQ5 with a 6 cylinder. I looked at the Grecale (also a 4 cylinder in GT trim). The T is essentially a GTS without the engine. It isn't just the engine that is different. It sits 10mm lower than the S, it comes with sport plus, it has more rear bias in the drivetrain, it has nicer agathe grey colored accents, comes with PASM, is much lighter in the front end and handles better. When you start adding options like leather seats the pricing is very different between the T and S (much more costly to make the changes on the S for leather options). While I drive fast, I don't need to be the fastest off the line or will I be racing anyone (that may not be true) so the flat our acceleration I won't use every day but the handling I WILL use every day and the T will out-handle the S, especially given the lighter nose. I wish every review would stop over-simplifying the differences as the 4 cyl. vs. 6 cyl. engine. While it does make the 0-60 time faster, my question is do you care and is it worth the extra $$$ to have that instead of handling. I have driven both and love the Macan but the S did not make me go (Wow, night and day difference), especially given the look of the T and what it comes with standard. If you can live with a base S then by all means but I won't be on the track with this and if you use that as your benchmark it is like saying a Dodge Charger Hellcat is a way better vehicle than a 911 because it has more horsepower.
