- The fantastic scene where Theon pledges his loyalty to The Iron Islands and House Greyjoy...his original family. The script is emotional, the actor's performance perfect, the music incredible and the cinematography beautiful. A truly epic scene.
"The Iron Islands. House: The Greyjoys. Words: We Do Not Sow. Famed for their skills in archery, navigation, and lovemaking.......and failed rebellions"
What Is Dead May Never Die...But Rises Again....Harder and Stronger...

Theon just wanted to belong somewhere...anywhere...
he did
+ny_kia31 Ramsey put him "right where he belongs".
We all do.

he isn’t tragic. he is stupid. constantly makes dumb mistakes and is punished for them.

Quite a bit ballsy and dickish to betray his best friend. Good thing Ramsay got rid of that pair...
+G_Man You have to understand. He was always treated like a second class citizen among the Starks. Even the whores didn't give him his due respect. Everybody was like "why should I call you a lord" to him. So in the end, this got to his head. I guess deep down Theon is mostly good and his one on one with Ramsey has cleansed him from his many sins. C'mon he's just a poor little guy who wants to be loved, how can you not like that?
Mubeen not to mention, throughout his childhood, if his father ever rebelled, Theon would have to worry about his "real father" taking his head. He was a hostage
+Mubeen Jon was treated even worse and he didn't turn out to be a first class asshole. Hell, even Theon enjoyed making fun of him and making sure Jon knows "where his place is". Theon is a snake.
Robb,
I hope this reaches you in time. My father has rejected the offer and plans to attack the north, raiding the shores and taking Deepwood Motte. Mobilize your army and make for the north before it's too late. I'll write again when I can.
Theon
ZeRunningMan thank you 😂 I just searched the comments for this
ZeRunningMan imagine how different it would have been if he had sent that letter...
@@multiversemaster3242 ikr
thanks for this, wish he had send it
THANK YOU👏👏.I couldn't make out the whole letter due to the font Theon wrote it in.
For those who don't understand the saying let me explain.
The Ironborn have this tradition of baptising their new born in sea water. This ritual is practiced by priests and full grown men as well, as a right of passage and proof of faith were they are actually drowned and then resuscitated if they can be. If the ironborn survives then it is considered that the Drowned God blessed them with new life. In the eyes of the priests those Ironborn have died for real and were given new life as a servant of the Drowned God and since they have already experienced death there is nothing left to fear and even if their bodies die their souls live on in the "watery halls" of the Drowned God(sort of like Valhalla).
Theon only got sprinkled. Doesn’t work that way 😄
@@benrichey2593 It does in the books
@@benrichey2593 drowning is the old way, sprinkling water was done recently but Euron was baptized by drowning because he wanted the old ways back. Theon was baptized by sprinkling both in the books and the show.
@@benrichey2593 Theon wanted to be babtized again in front of his father to prove that he is indeed Ironborn but wasn't hardcore enough to let himself be drowned.
No wonder Balon looks so disappointed. He is a follower of the old way and Theon choosing the safer option was hella pathetic
Alfie Allen is an amazing actor. He displays so much emotion in his face and you can see a single tear stream down from his eye at the end of the scene. Alfie deserves an emmy.
No actor displayed as
Much quality range as him in the show.
@@Oakland510 Jamie did IMO.
@@deathstriker9076 good shout. It’s very arguable but they ruined his end “ I never cared about innocents “. That’s inconsistent with his original reasoning, Theon did have these character flaws
@Walker11 They ruined just about every character by the end lol. Jamie's actor still killed it though.
and to think he only started acting because his pop star sister wrote a song about him, and how lazy he is smoking weed all day
Theon is the very embodiment of that phrase "...But rises again harder and stronger". beautiful symbolism from his transition to reek and back into a new, more respectable Theon
This happens before he turns to Reek, so no.
Fabian Gutierrez not talking about this scene, just the saying in general
his penis is gone. Theon is gone.
Woke Latino -- Enough with that damn joke! Sexual organs don't always have to define personality!
in the time period he's in it will
The cinematography on the show is always excellent, but this scene just took it to another dimension. The location and shot composition of the baptism is truly spectacular.
What is dead may never die
@Jamie Swanson i know right what a shitty season they did it on purpose by leaving a starbucks cup out in the open i mean jesus a brilliant series is fucked up david and dan just like that
@Simba danys actor left one out by accident in one scene
Yes but the music takes it to another level still
The show is dead may never rise
Could've stopped the video at 1:57, but hey, there's always room for Tyrion.
+Lietiel yeah especially because he doesn't need much space
I agree. But the music transitioned into the next scene and although the scene takes you out of the moment in this clip how bad would it be without the music that drove so much of the unsaid words and feelings in the Theon scenes just dropped off hard?
There's ALWAYS room for Lord Tyrion Lannister. 1st of his name. King of the Andels and true protector of the realm.
@@TheAngryHippie Tyrion isn't the first Tyrion.
Its like tyrion was reading that chapter of GoT ^^
0:23 the choice that would haunt Theon forever. Literally one second of a poor decision shaped his life in terrible ways afterwards. Scary thought, as it’s very accurate in reality also.
Seriously, things got way out of hand from there at an astonishing rate.
Gods, it's so chilling to think how this one decision has had such ramifications for the entire series. If you think about it in one form or another this decision led to the sacking of Winterfell, the Red Wedding, the succession crises in the North, Theon's maiming and the subsequent succession crises in the Iron Islands. Rather impressive for one man.
not that chilling, he was the heir to the iron islands by right of birth and grew up to be a brother to the heir to Winterfell
The Red Wedding still would've happened, regardless of Theons decision... It was Robb breaking his oath to marry Freys daughter and the Boltons betraying him that caused it.
@@Plagueis_The_Wise He never would have needed to go back to the freys tho to take back the north. In the books anyways he only needed the freys for extra manpower for the siege of moat cailin and if no ironborn there would have went other way around the trident back to the north to rebuild his forces
@@Plagueis_The_Wise its all connected robb feels so betrayed he takes comfort to have sex so he marries her to preserve her honor which pissed off the freys and in the books roose says that it was when theon took winterfell when roose decided to betray robb
actually it was better for theon to betray robb. because if he didn't, he would have died at the red wedding. I mean ofc his last years were rather....not well but yeah
In the books, the "baptism" is portrayed literally as an attempted drowning, followed by rescucitation. Therefore, the baptised ironborn is already dead, and may never die again.
Which was always stupid to me, you’re gonna lose a lot of manpower because the “drowned” were “weak” but really most were just unlucky. Maybe that’s why the iron islands have always been bad at everything except piracy.
You gotta admit the Greyjoy’s theme is the most badass
I like the lannisters more. mostly because of what it stands for.

Alfie Allen did a great Job playing Theon. Underrated character
That's some pretty damn fine penmanship there. Maybe Theon should have done the "kill the masters" graffiti over in Meereen, since they write in english anyway.
Well, something of Theon's won't be rising harder and stronger.
+John Greene Too soon. :D
Nathalie TV lol
That shot of Theon in the dark burning the letter. Wow.
The way Theon looks at his father's emotionless stare before saying "I would" is heartbreaking to me. While he truly did live up to "but rises again, harder and stronger', his journey starts out of a deep yearning to be accepted by his family.
One of the coolest scenes in GoT.
+Slicc7 It's pretty cool but let's not go too far
+Jon Snow yeah i think the music make that scene cooler but one of the best?i dunno i completly forget that scene until i click on it
+glorilol 95 he said one of the coolest scenes not best
***** yeah i know and i continue on my point...
+Slicc7 The good old days when the show was actually good.
One of my two or three favorite pieces of music from all seasons
One of the best character developments
What is dead may never die ♥
5 Months on!
What is dead may never die.
this show used to be SO good
Still good, the writing is not as good as seasons 01-04 but still great
True
This scene made me cry knowing what awaits him after this decision. I hope he can redeem himself
Anyone hear after watching his death? Long live Theon!
Fav music of the entire series. Gives me chills!
I'd walk into war with this music. Rallying the troops "what is dead may never die but rises again harder and stronger"
this was when i knew i'd fallen in love with theon. the struggle he faces is so clear on his face- how far would he be willing to go to prove himself to his family again? sure, betraying the starks was a douche move, but the starks, no matter how kindly they treated him, weren't his family. he was a prisoner. all theon ever wanted to do was to prove himself. that's all.
This scene would be so underwhelming without the music.
This one decision could have saved so much grief for Theon and many other characters
The Greyjoy's have the greatest one liner's in the entire series.
I feel for the dude he was a cocky sob but he didn't deserve any of that happened to him.
def ain't "cocky" now...
Alfie Allen has great features for this role. Theon looks exactly how I would expect an Ironborn person to look. Great casting.
His eyes match the environment of ironborns 👍
What is chopped may never rise.
"What is dead may never die!"
**see incoming army of White Walkers**
"DAMMIT!"
Hope they use that priest as Damphair in Season 6
+Antti Samuli Partanen so true, the voice, the way he commands his presence you feel as if he is actually a drowned priest of the iron islands. I feel the same way with the new Three eyed Raven, the old one was much more mystical.
The new one for the drowning of Euron was awesome.
His words when spoken during the drowning ceremony had power behind them and made the scene even more epic with the Greyjoy theme blasting in the background.
WHo is that priest? His a greyjoy right?
Alek Shukhevych in the books he’s Balons brother
Anyone else really starting to miss these days?
When GoT was good :(
not really, we can just watch it all on youtube lol
''You're a good Man Theon''.. 😞
"bless him with salt bless him with stone bless him with steel."
""What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger."
Well, there's no raising Theon's kraken from the dead that's for sure lol.
It rises no more...
You dont know what a red priest may find in the junkyard!
“Theon...you’re a good man...thank you”
I personally believe that the Starks were MUCH more of a family for Theon than the Greyjoy's ever could be...blood or not.
Theon could never feel welcome at Winterfell with the thought that one day Ned may cut his head off
The starks treated him like trash tho
@@Harinjo916 they didn’t go out of their way to abuse him, but they treated him as less than the other siblings. He was thought of as a loyal servant and hostage more than their child, and when this is coming from the only family you have (or that hasn’t abandoned you), it does count as treating him like trash
an awesome scene. everything comes together here just right.
There needs to be a series just on House GreyJoy/The Iron islands, the mythos surrounding the drowned god, the “axe dance” they do and the Kraken on their shields, it’s ALL interesting.
This really was the doom of Theon. This choice was the crossroads for his character. Imagine how things would have gone otherwise if he had returned to Robb. Maybe he would have died at the Red Wedding? Or maybe he would have made a difference? This show and its books were so amazing with their character development. The early seasons truly were masterpieces.
Whatever Theon had...it won´t rise harder and Stronger at any time soon....
When I accomplished something this comes to my mind sometimes. Every little work / project gets you a bit dead inside, but you don't die at least at that moment. But you rise again harder and stronger.
Theon is one of my favorite character , of course GOT is an amazing show and we all love it for different reasons , and of course you can't see theon as a hero , dancing around the battlefield , being a " good guy " fight those bad evil guy , well for me i've seen enough of this captain seven kingdom stuff , theon is portrayed to be a normal person , he's selfish and weak , lack of confidence , pretend to be tough all the time , sounds familiar ? he's a normal guy , just like us , that's why I like him .
I can literally taste the salt, stone and steel as the sea waters being poured over.
The Starks dragged him miles from home with a noose tied to his neck after killing his brothers and people. They self righteously punished the Iron Born for rebelling against a king, just as they had done themselves months before.
The only Stark who was kind to him was Robb, and he scorned Theon for being reckless when he saved Bran's life, which basically told him that nothing he did for them would ever be enough to gain acceptance.
BaronVonKenny Two different rebellions.Aerys was a insane tyrant who murdered the Lord Of Winterfell and his heir, imprisoned the heir of the Eyrie and called for the unjust imprisonment of the lord of the storm lands as well as the second son of winterfell.Robert was a kind king who hurt no one.Balon’s rebellion wasn’t a personal beef against Robert,it was part of the ironborn’s long held desire to return to being an independent kingdom and they started a war to get that.I understand their desire and I understand the Iron Throne crushing that rebellion. You do realize that Robert did Avalon a huge favor by not killing him, exiling or even sending him to the wall. When you’re a noble who wages a rebellion against the throne losing usually means either death, loss of titles or exile.
Fuck him.
Man, the Greyjoy theme is way too epic and heroic for that family lol.
This was one of the most memorable parts from the whole show for me. Theon dealing with the devil for nothing but acceptance from his own family. Tragic.
"What is dead may never die" such a strong line.
Thankkkkkks you!
tears.....
If Theon had felt so rejected by the Starks, he should have sailed back to the Iron Islands and killed Balon, becoming the patriarch of House Greyjoy and then carried out his vengeance. It was the fact that he sided with Balon, KNOWING that he rejected him outright, and hoped to leave the Grejoy’s mark on Westeros and was merely a vessel in Balon’s scheme, or better still, he could have dissented from Balon’s tyrannical policies rallying some of the Greyjoy soldiers to his cause as it was with Stannis and Renly. Then there may have been a chance he would never have been culpable of his war crimes.
Well, if something is killed once, it can't be again. In the books one of the traditions of the Iron Islanders is to drown a boy and then bring him back to life (clearing airway and other things) or they just hold him under the waves without him losing consciousness. This is their way of ceremonial killing him so he can't die again, in theory, and to make him stronger and even fear death less. I don't know all the details though.
What irony, the man who said what is dead may never die tried to kill the night King who was already dead, if only he had listened to himself
Say what you will, but what is dead still may never die.
... The beginning of Theon's nightmare...
what is dead may never die... man house ironborn's prayers are so badass
Isn't that the whole point. I don't think Theon really enjoys betraying the
Starks, but in the world it is set in, blood is much thicker than water. You will always side with your family. Do you think Tyrion likes his family? No, but he still does work for them because they are family.
lol imagine if he changed his mind again, and needed to write another letter cause he didn't save it to his documents folder
You just helped him a lot ,man!
One of my favorite scenes, I love Theons story. Shame how weak he ended up
This scene's so good it led Tyrion thinking
The actor who plays the Drowned Priest is Jonathan Ryan. He is probably best known outside Ireland and the UK for playing the French Ambasador on the Tudors.
the Ironborn baptism involves drowning. Therefore, once you are baptised, it counts as if you died once and were reborn again hence "What is dead may never die"
"What is dead may never die."
The Night King took that personally.
Nowadays, we find affection a defining characteristic of family, more so than blood. But in a medieval setting, blood weighs more than anything else.
what is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger
What is dead May never die..✨
I want an entire series about the House Greyjoy.
if only the whole series was of this quality T_T
What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger..🌬
Just because they're blood doesn't mean they are family.
Truly an epic scene.
Robbs the only one who treated him like family, granted his family treated him like crap, but thats just how the greyjoys treat each other
Yes!
The moment Robb lost the war. Damn you Theon.
Those were my exact words this week.
"Theon of the House Greyjoy, you would this day consecrate your faith to the Drowned God?"
"...NOT THEON! REEK!"
Reek is dead, get over it.
what is dead may never die
It was a great journey, onto building empires
The Iron Islands look so cold and dank and miserable.
I can't stop thinking of GameOfLOLs when watching this.
'' What is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger ''.
Is it me or does that accurately fit a description of the White Walkers? Are the Greyjoys on their side or something?
keep a crow eye on Euron
+WAKEISLAND99 Theon's baptism in this scene was called "drowning", though most are "drowned" as newborns. This means they have committed themselves to the Drowned God, and upon taking their last breath they believe their spirit will go to his halls and be reborn again. They believe in resurrection.
So, after you are "drowned", what is already dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger. It all lines up.
galept ohh i see. Thank you fellow game of thrones freak!
Azor Ahai?
MAPLETHELEAF The greyjoys aren't on the WW's side. This has to do with the fact that in certain baptisms the person is actually drowned then others attempt to revive him/her through CPR.If the person is successfully revived they are said to have died but not really die instead rising again harder and Stronger.Remember the Ironborn serve a the drowned god who drowned and then came back to life.
They have this practise in the iron island in the books.
They drown someone then bring them back with CPR in a "baptism" kind of thing for the drowned god.
They're dead then rise again.
If it wasn't for the fact he betrayed his foster family, this scene would be very epic
the book version were they are actually drowned would have been so much better
Theon you were born a greyjoy but you were meant to be your own man!!!
What is wet may never dry!
Literally a better slogan then theirs lol. At least it makes sense since they are sailors not zombies.
What is cut may never rise
If Theon hadn't betrayed Robb he would've died at the Red Wedding and wouldn't have saved Sansa, at least in the show, this decision probably also saved Bran and Rickon's lives, well prolonged a couple of years for Rickon
nope, Theon had knowledge of winter fell so seizing it with a few men without anyone noticing before it was too late was easy. If Theon wasn't their with the iron born man, then it would have been harder to take winterfell and other houses would have arrived to save it
"What is dead may never die, but rises harder and stronger"
Holy shit, whoever came up with that knew about the wights.
Oh Theon, the jar jar binks of the game of thrones.
...and during the initiation ceremony of the priests of the Drowned God, a priest asphyxiates the candidates, then he revives them with cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Then they become drowned men.
*"Theon of the House Greyjoy, you would this day consecrate your faith to the Drowned God?"*
"I would."
*"Kneel. Let Theon your servant be born again from the sea, as you were. Bless him with salt. Bless him with stone. Bless him with steel."*
"What is dead may never die!"
*"What is dead may never die, but rises again, harder and stronger. Stand."*
