Just watching this match back (again), randomly. We (Scotland) were so unlucky in this match and were by far the better team over the two legs. Poor defending at the England goals cost us big time, missed Paul Lambert and Colin Hendry was certainly not fit. I don't think Paul Ritchie did terrible, but we would've been far better balanced on the left with the likes of Callum Davidson (who came into the side for the 2nd leg and played well) or even Gary Naysmith. Wasn't to be, Scotland got the win at Wembley on the Wednesday, but just not enough in the end, missed chances cost us big time. Kevin Gallagher (a favourite of Craig Brown's) had not scored for Scotland in over 2 years and was never a prolific goalscorer. Would've loved to have seen Neil McCann given a start wide left here and even Gallagher on the right wing. Don Hutchison was a clever player and I felt he was playing too deep here, though he was lucky to escape being sent off with his challenge on Paul Scholes. Anyways, 24 years ago, but still very fresh in the mind. Always love to see Scotland play England.
@@colinbradley9551 and then came 10 qualifying tournament failures from Euro 2000 to World Cup 2018. That’s more than Celtic & Rangers doing a 9 in a row in terms of SPL titles they won in consecutive seasons until Euro 2020 & 2024 when they eventually qualify themselves for a major tournament. But they still can’t qualify for a World Cup! 😂
To this day, I still don't understand how anyone can make Shearer Captain when Tony Adams is on the pitch, and that's where Keegan had lost it from the start. They never played well under him and it's no wonder he walked away in the end.
England were incredibly fortunate to qualify for Euro 2000. Had Scotland been able to level the tie (Seaman's save at Wembley comes to mind), they would most likely have gone on to qualify instead.
What a terrible England team. Phil Neville at left back and Redknapp on left midfield/wing. Why are English managers like this? Everyone can see that is a stupid and unbalanced team but they all do the same thing i.e. Eriksson playing Scholes on left wing. Venables and Hoddle had the right idea - play a left footer as left wing back in a 3-5-2 and they had plenty of options around that time - LeSaux, Hinchcliffe, Wilcox, Alan Thompson and later Ashley Cole.
Beckham's quality from the right caused that problem. They all saw Man Utd's 442 and saw how good he was so it blinded them. If he had had any pace you could have played him as a wing back and played Ince, Scholes, Redknapp centrally in this team. Ince holding, Redknapp creating and Scholes supporting the attack. Eriksen created the same problem when he played 442 with Beckham on the right. He could have had a 3 in central midfield with any of the following.. Butt, Gerrard, Beckham, Scholes, Hargreaves, Ledley King, Carrick and Lampard and instead he played 2. He did sometimes play a midfield diamond but then there was no width and fullbacks were left exposed.. ok against weaker teams but not against quality. Although Beckham was one of the best players, playing him on the right of a 442 and building it around him was the big mistake of that era because it created all your problems (weak left hand side and outnumbered in central midfield against quality teams with tactically sound managers). If they had played a different system they could have torn teams apart with passing and movement.. instead it was mostly long Hollywood passing from Gerrard and Beckham and dated tactics from Sven with your best player (Scholes) retiring, presumably because he thought it was shit.

I agree! Scotland were unlucky because they definitely played the better football over the two legs.
05:55 Gallagher’s first chance.
06:15 Gallagher’s second chance.
24:00 Scholes 1st goal.
25:13 Gallagher misses THIRD chance!
30:31 Keegan: 😡 “YOU SEE THAT?!?
44:29 Scholes 2nd goal.
45:58 It’s probably not Scotland’s day…
Not the greatest of games but the 2 goals from Paul Scholes got England to Euro 2000.
Enjoyed every minute off that, the jocksrtaps are so jealous of England 😀

Brilliant atmosphere leading up to the game, was in the north enclosure.

The tackle on Scholes was shameful.

Absolute rubbish
But they didn’t 😂😂😂
