This game I will take to the grave with me, on of my favourite ever. Modern football and greed has killed the game. And David Coleman was the best commentator ever. Great memories.

It's sad how you Scot's have faded since those great days (not that I'm saying England or the PL are great-I much prefer this era) Celtic were easily the best British club side from 1967 to the mid 70's with Rangers producing superb sides (ECWC winners 1972) and any Scottish side in Europe-Dunfermline ,Hibs, Dundee-both-) were formidable ,and world class players were regularly produced-Baxter through to Gilzean Dave McKay Bremner Dalglish Jimmy Johnstone Colin Stein -the days when an English club would add class by buying a Scot! Pat Nevin said that kids don't play football every waking minute any more in Scotland which is why the glory days are gone-me I think the league structure has weakened things-the old Division One and Two allowed a lot of clubs to develop players, the current Scots set up makes all the lower clubs unable to have the league stability to allow them to produce-but who knows ? The lower leagues in England aren't producing like before as all the transfer cash from the top goes to buy off the peg foreign players......all of which makes me sad the old days are gone. But at least we got to see them !

Many say England Team was pretty hopeless in the 1970s, failing to reach final stages of tournements. On closer examination, they were eliminated by top teams - 1972 by West Germany (soon world champion), 1973 by Poland (semi-finalist a year later), 1975 by the Czechs (who would win the 1976 European Championship), 1977 by Italy (like Poland, semi-finalist a year later). Failed, they may have. But they did ran into formidable oppositions.

This was the 1974 Home Championship match between Scotland and England at Hampden Park.
Scotland had qualified for the 1974 World Cup finals in Munich whereas England didn't.As such Scotland under Willie Ormond were using the Home Championship as part of the preparations for the Munich finals.
England in May had sacked Sir Alf Ramsey and caretaker Joe Mercer took over for the time being.
This time around England had to do without Bobby Moore and Alan Ball.Instead Liverpool's Emlyn Hughes took over the captaincy.Colin Bell,Norman Hunter and Martin Peters were the only senior men left. The last was the only survivor from the 1966 World Cup winning team as Moore had retired from international football and Ball suffered a broken leg.
Scotland dominated the proceedings and two freakish own goals won the home team the match. For Martin Peters it was his last England game but the latter was only a shadow of himself.

Hi Richard. Thanks for your generous reply. :) I was half-joking as Keithy Weller was the hero of Millwall ( my team ) in those glorious 1960's days at The Old Den where just b4 his time we went , almost , 3 seasons unbeaten at home creating a F L record of going 59 Home games without defeat so I realise he meant more to us Millwall and Leicester fans in particular than others , especially as you were only 8 , my friend , Good Luck....

Problem is this was 1974 .. England are much better than Scotland now. Look where the players for each team play now , most England players are champions league regulars & are young developing players ... WC semis 2018, beat Spain & Croatia since then too

Frannie Lee should still have been an England player, and where were Hudson and Ball, the two best English players at that time ? (injured maybe ? - Ball I mean.)

Still in disgrace after being sent off in Katowice in '73, and Hudson was still serving an international suspension for refusing to play for the U23's and telling Sir Alf where to get off.

Funny how the 'when men were men' type comments here are ignoring how long the hair was of almost all the players then. Not that im criticising, it looks good to me! Better than the boring short style most men have now.
Great Scotland players then! Maybe if the Scottish players now grew their hair long the quality playing would come back too? worth a try!

That England team was crap. The only player on the England team to come away with any credit was Peter Shilton. The Scots wanted it more than England. They were far and away the better team.
Had it not been for Shilton, Scotland could have had four or five. No wonder Mercer didn't last long in the job. Scotland won and deserved to. They were the better team by a country mile.

We are a small nation who still managed to qualify for 5 consecutive World Cups between 1974 and 1990 which is twice more than England did during that era ,despite the fact there's only 5 million of us , so what's your excuse?
