Well what what happened was that sky, bt, pulled the plug on scottish football and gave it to greedy england. And you lot go and buy foreign players and manager's owned by foreign business men.
@@Dinobaburas. Sky only got involved in football in the early '90s - the decline of Scottish football began before that. English clubs spent all their money on foreigners? Bit rich that. The last time either Celtic or Rangers were half decent they barely had a Scotsman in the team between them. When Martn O'Neils Celtic team were doing well in Europe and contested the UEFA Cup final in 2003 they had one Scotsman in their team and three Englishman. The last time Rangers were picking up decent results in the Champions League they were full of Dutchman, as I recall. Before that they were dependent on players like Gazza and Laudrup. And neither club has produced a top class Scottish player between them in well over two decades (jury is still out Tierney). Who was the last? Genuinely can't think of a single one in the last 30 years? Hibernian and Motherwell have produced more top class Scottish talent than the Old Firm in the last three decades. Even now, and without money, Rangers are dominated by foreign and English players. Need to start producing some quality homegrown players again. You talk about English clubs spending money on foreigners, but at least the top English sides have home grown players in the team and quality youngsters in their squads/ breaking into their teams. England internationals like Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Abraham, Loftus-Cheek, Hudson-Odoi, Foden, Mount, Winks, Gomez, Tomori and Trent all came through the academies of top 6 clubs in recent years. Before that you had United's class of '92 and Gerrard, Carragher, Owen and Fowler from Liverpool. And that's just from two clubs and two cities. Why aren't the Old Firm matching that? They've a similar size population to pick from in the local region, plus Scotland in general. Anyway, what really killed Scottish football as a Sky product for the neutral was Rangers going bust when they did. Nothing to sell without the Old Firm rivalry. They're back now, and the competitiveness of the league and results in Europe are picking up again. Interest from outside Scotland and Ireland may also pick up as a result.
@@jamesmason8436 you termed (bit rich that) That's easy for you to say ALL the money is getting thrown at english football, you mentioned home grown I counted 11 there is that the sum total for all the cash sky, bt, the english government are throwing at them, most of the players you mention have still to be proven, yes we had a lot of foreigners in our league but english pundits media keep mentioning english football that's how you fall flat in the international tournaments don't mention the last world Cup the draw was the easiest pass in history! And the golden generation a term devised by the media that never came to anything either! The lesser league's in england get more cash than Scotland, when england enter a tiddlywinks competition they get finance to the hilt and (oh wer gonna win it this time).
@@Dinobaburas. I actually listed 12 players, and there are many more I could list - I just went for English players who'd played for the national team that had come through a top six academy (specifically Chelsea, United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Man City and Spurs). Plenty of other kids who are playing regularly for those top six sides who've yet to play for England (Saka, Smith-Rowe, Nelson, Maitland-Niles, Greenwood, Williams, Skipp, Walker-Peters, Willock, Nketiah, Jones, Elliot, James etc), and other English players at those clubs who didn't come through their academies (Henderson, Maguire, Stones, Wan-Bisaka, Walker, Shaw, Alli, Dier, Holding, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Milner, Barkley etc). You say they're unproven but many of the English players in both of my lists have played in European finals and at the last World Cup. The Spurs, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arenal contingent all played in European finals just last season, and United (with Rashford, Smalling, Lingard, Young and Shaw) won the Europa League a few seasons ago as well. And this is just top six clubs, plenty of other good English teams and players throughout the league and even abroad (Sancho, Trippier, Young, Kenny and Smalling). Leicester alone have several great young English players. English clubs at least have the excuse of having too much money, hence why they're quicker to import a ready made foreign international than give a kid a chance - what's the excuse up in Scotland? The league should be awash with homegrown Scottish talent yet is full Championship/ League One quality English players and foreigners. Only 50% of the SPL are Scottish players when the figure could and should be far higher. You mention the Golden Generation and England's various other failures and I won't argue. We too haven't produced enough quality over the years (though there's a generation coming through who look brilliant and have wom world titles at youth level), but we have at least produced *some* quality. Many objectively world class players like Lampard, Scholes, Rooney, Cole, Gerrard, Owen, Ferrinand and Terry. Even if they couldn't function as a team and deliver a title they were still great players who reached quarter finals of major tournaments and lost on pens to other world class teams and players. Scotland can't even produce a team to qualify for a tournament these days! Huge difference. And instead of looking at issues closer to home, you blame Sky and the Prenjer League lol. Plenty of small nations that produce great players despite not having much money. Croatia spring to mind. Scotland have produced ONE top class footballer in the last twenty years. Shocking.
Sky money finances epl. Similar backing for spl clubs and theyd match epl clubs. dubious (putting it mildly) Saudi sovereign wealth fund owners bankroll 1 of your "biggest" clubs! 3 team league. No-one outside city pool or Chelsea will win league.
this was the game where there was unpresidented riots in Glasgow before, during and after the match. England fans travelled in huge numbers despite the FA not applying for official tickets. The 'combined' English 'Firms' teamed up with the Rangers ICF to fight the T.Army, Hibs CCS, and Aberdeen casuals. They banned the annual meeting of the teams after this fixture.
That was certainly the story doing the rounds at the time. "England fans ran amok on Sauchiehall Street" etc... But looking at the footage of the game, you're lucky if there's what 1500-2000 England fans in total there. So with 30 odd years of hindsight, I think this story may have been exaggerated by the tabloid press at the time. I think the real reason for scrapping the home internationals was the ever congested & expanding football calendar and it just got harder and harder to fit in what were effectively meaningless games.
Mantis Toboggan MD I think they were just looking to new horizons and wanted the England team to compete in the Euros and World Cup and to play in a way which would lead to success. I'd say Waddles hair: Shiltons shirt didn't take scissors to get it off.
Bully was an old fashioned centre forward and certainly knew where the net was. I’m sure he would have thrived in the top flight. Always wondered if his strength and determination would have given the Germans more to think about in that 1990 semi in extra time. Maybe took off Beardsley.
Not sure which is worse. Roy Aitkin's shooting ability or Chris Waddle's hairstyle.....It's a close call!!!
Back in the day! Waddle and that horrendous hairstyle 😂😂😂 Scotland shit nothing new, happy days.
Aitken looks like he's 53 in this game...
Looks like piers morgan
The jocks might of had some good moments against England 🏴 and have produced some very good performances in recent years they raise their game against the auld enemy but seem to be poor against other countries and certainly don't produce the quality of players like they used to, but good luck to them as they play with so much passion 👍
The day when both goalkeepers were wearing the same jersey...both are wearing Scotland's...i still remember the game...
1:19 Nike and Umbro both advertised on the same side of the pitch, let alone on the same pitch? Won't see that in today's game for sure in this era of exclusivity!
That missed tackle from Mc Pherson on Bull near the end...shameless defending
England would have won Italia '90 if Bully had played in that semi against Germany.
I remember begging for him to play that game ,I agree we'd have won with him
Was at that game lot of trouble on the way to Mount Florida...I knew Scottish football was finished when the fans round me started singing...theres only one Dave McPherson....😭🖕
England vs Scotland. Friday June 18th 2021 8pm Wembley, will there be anyone allowed to go there to watch it?? Dare to dream!!
We're Gonna stick it to em next September as per usual .
Chris waddell what a player
Strange side. Cottee and Fashanu up front? Gary stevens swings one in Meat of forehead . Goal. Waddle? 1 zip. Steve Bull also played and Neil Webb. Still more than enough to see off the sweaty socks in there own back yard. Eventually ended 2 . 0. Shilton played well.
one name and that's steve bull
i was there behind the goal & I'll never forget McCoist missing a siter!!!
The chilli jockos weren't a bad team 😮
They were unlucky
Steve bull good old fashioned centre forward back then should of got more caps for England 🏴
Only time a Scotland keeper shirt has been worn by a good keeper
Andy Goram was better than Shilton ffs Shilton never saved a penalty in his life mate ask Gary Lineker!!!!
I’ve actually got Steve balls Autograph. My mum played darts in a pub in Hednesford, Staffordshire. And Steve bull came walking in with he’s wife. I’ve also got Stan collymores Autograph to. he signed my Stan collmore book I had
Interesting story until you mentioned that woman beating prick Collymore
Webb Fashanu Bull Cottee. Well dodgy team one year before World Cup glory
Always liked Neill Webb remember him at pompey good player
What? A Chris Waddle header?? 😲
Even with Fashanu and Walker playing, Scotland still couldnt win 😂
Fashanu :-) Wasn't he 9th choice due to injuries...he really was shit
I was there🏴🏴🏴
why is shilton in a Scotland jersey ? wish he was in the Scotland goal. was in the uncovered Celtic end that day
Answer at 0:58 :)
Ally Ross I remember David Harvey playing (v Man City 1978) in the FA Cup whilst wearing his red Scotland goalkeeper shirt (not sure why though), any one know why??
Meant to say that was Stevens Barry not Steven. Do keep up.
Even though I’m an Englishman I hate the way that Scottish football is now. It’s an absolute joke a 1 team league and as for the international team hmmm. Used to like watching Scottish football back in the 80’s when you had about 4 or 5 teams competing every season
No-one outside city pool or Chelsea will win league.
bring back home internationals
Waddle should have been booked for his haircut...
Waddle aux dribbles magiques
See you Jimmy !
Well fashnau, footballing joke
FRST TIME SCOTS GOT DONE OVER IN GLASGOW [ THEY STOPPED THE FIXTURE
England took the piss big time that day. A bit if revenge for 77'
Is Shilton wearing a Scotland shirt ? lol
The only time a great goal keeper ever wore a Scottish shirt lol
And the last time england had a great goalkeeper you must admit
Correct me if I'm wrong, but was that john fashanu up front!
Sadly yes!
Does anyone else think that Steve Coogan watched this and got some inspiration for Alan Partridge?
Buono estente. Chris Waddle!
I’m surprised the advantage rule was used in 1989. I thought it was a newer rule, Implemented in the 2000s.
Bully's Star Prize, a goal at Hampden!!!
love it -
Haha Chris Waddle's hair.
bull was the haaland of the lower divisions
Are you sure Shilts didn't lose his shirt on the bus ?
Scotland national side R. I. P
this was the game where there was unpresidented riots in Glasgow before, during and after the match. England fans travelled in huge numbers despite the FA not applying for official tickets. The 'combined' English 'Firms' teamed up with the Rangers ICF to fight the T.Army, Hibs CCS, and Aberdeen casuals. They banned the annual meeting of the teams after this fixture.
Whatever.
Exactly I was at the game and travelled from Stirling on the train never seen any bother.
"Unpresidented (sic)riots in Glasgow" 1987 was better and "the combined English Firms allowed the Rangers ICF to be there" would be more apt.
Evidently this didn’t transpire! I’d like them to go back and revive this fixture in the future with the British Championships, even dust off the Rouss Cup.
Gary Stevens made all the difference.
He was a very decent right back (though defensively he could get caught out like against Van Basten in Euro 88) but generally a quality player..he got a alot of grief for his cock up against Holland..
Bully was a great striker. Way better than Lineker and would have scored more too, he was too loyal to Wolves. Needed to join a too club at the time to get more caps and win honours for club.
We were banned because we smashed glasgow up game before ..ENGLAND
Fkin thousands of English in the crowd, with no tickets, 😉👊😂
Alot of trouble that day
@@robwilliamson6181 sounds good and rightly so after the sweaties smashed Wembley, the fightback began, don't think a lot of lads were bothered before that, 🏴
@@mickharrison9004 England ran the Jocks all over that day. The English took a very nasty and game mob
@@robwilliamson6181 yeah luv it, and as I always say we're the biggest and best firm in the world, nobody comes close, also look what happened when the main lads went to Ireland, and smashed em game called off, had to be done as well cos earlier when we played em in a euros match, thousands of celtic fans came down and attacked England Boys with weapons a few didn't make it back on the boat, i heard a few cockneys on way back, the Irish will pay big time for that and they did.
I was there and that didn’t happen. Please get your meds ASAP, Rob.
