I was at this match. It was the most exciting and dramatic match I have ever attended. The commitment of both teams, but especially the Scots, was something to behold. And they were amateurs! They were not playing for pay cheques, they were playing for their country. I have not seen a professional match that comes anywhere near it.
As Will Carling said himself. That was a legendary Scottish side we were up against. David Sole, Derek White, John Jeffries, The Hastings Brothers, Gary Armstrong, Craig Chalmers and not forgetting the winning British Lions Captain Finley Calder. What a Team.
I am English, but people forget that of this Scotland starting XV, eight had been selected for the Lions tour of Australia in the summer of 1989, and in fact 6 of them had started at least one test match v the Aussies. They were a good team full of high class players.
xpat73 Yeah mate.I'm a Scot, and we were really lucky that they were all around at that time.Plus Finlay Calder (The Winning British Lions Captain) played great that day.
I remember turning out for my club 3rdXV in 1993 against Stewarts Melville 3s. Who's on the park but bloody Finlay Calder! A test series winning Lions captain! I can tell you he was made of different stuff, just steel and sinew. To tackle him head-on was close to suicide.
You know what I miss from the old days? Apart from the mud, the long grass, the cotton shirts, the collars tucked in, its the wind. The cold February wind. Stadia these days are enclosed, even have roofs on. The wind whistling round and players looking freezing, reminds me of my playing days on some desolate northern pitch at the back of a council estate.
Great match, I also remember passing Bill Beaumont on the Sunday morning when entering the Grosvenor Hotel, understandably he looked slightly the worse for wear.
Thanks for posting this I've been trying to find this game on-line for a long time! It's actually the first time I've watched this game since it originally aired on St. Paddy's day in 1990. Grew up listening to the late Bill McClaren calling rugby on BBC TV, sadly missed these days :-( Even though I knew the final score I was still biting my nails at the end just I was biting my nails at the end as a 16 year old in 1990 watching this live :-) Hopefully Scotland can get a decent team together to challenge for the Grand Slam again :-)
The first rugby match I ever sat through on TV, as a fresh faced 12 year old English lad. We only had to turn up to win it ... which is precisely why we didn't win it! Constantly got turned over ... yes the Scots had the rub of the green and a couple of obscene lucky bounces (not least the Stanger try), but they made that luck and were deserving of it. We just didn't have the fire in our belly that the Scots had in theirs. God alone knows why I ever wanted to watch another game after this ...
That was some English team Pete. They were up against a Scottish side that was a fluke in having all those good players, playing at the same time. Never to be repeated. Finley Calder taking out Mick the Munch Skinner. It doesn't come better than that.
Please could someone find the Wales v Scotland 1982 l would love to see that game in full again it was a cracking game of rugby and the tries were incredible, that day Scotland were absolutely cockahoop and of course in those days Scotland v Wales games were exciting to watch and of course the late Bill McLaren made them even more exciting. He was the greatest commentator that ever lived, l miss him so much, please please find that 1982 game l shall be very grateful.
Different era & they had normal bodies. The forwards now are just far too big & it's dangerous. They should have a body weight limit I feel on the forwards definitely.
If VAR was around then, Scotland wouldn't have won. That Stanger try would've been disallowed. Still... A brilliant day and one hell of a performance. C'mon Scotland,
Not these days, but back then it was common, particularly at Murrayfield where the schoolboy's enclosure was pitch side and there was no fence in front of the East and West stands
33:55 you are 5 meters from the line and you give it perhaps the least dynamic player in the side - Rendall? It's weird watching some of this stuff now....but surely there you give it to Teague.
Reading a book about the game called The Grudge. V good book which highlights the poisonous atmosphere created by the papers in Scotland. Eng players went out to warm up and spat at. Spat at again on the way back. Imagine if that had happened at Twickenham. We'd never hear the end of it. Eng had played superb rugby until then but were out thought.
Everyone in Scotland was sick and tired of the English arrogance stirred up by the English press and BBC. The atmosphere in Edinburgh that weekend was unbelievable. There was just this nervous but steely determination to wipe that smug grin off WIll Carlings face. But once it was all said and done there was a great night had by one and all.
i would think Bishop would look upon this match as not one of his best refereeing displays. Didn't allow the game to flow whatsoever. at times I wish some refs would choke the whistle down their throats.
Credit to the Scots for a spirited team effort but it's disgusting how lenient he was on them for all those collapsed scrums. England should have had a penalty try just after half an hour. Even the Scottish try came from a scrum that should have been on the halfway line.
56:40 .... Wade Dooley clearly concussed and yet insisting to play on, and the medical team allowing him. I remember when this was "normal", and to spaz out with concussion was to appear to be a wuss. Crazy looking at it now.
The best rugby commentator ever
Greatest day in the history of Scottish Rugby!

Holy hell, This really is a trip down memory lane, Even now 29 years later.. this still sends shivers down yer spine!!

Merci pour le partage....si vous en avez d'autres.......merci d'avance !!!!
Brilliant! This must just about have been the last year that the shirts were without sponsorship.
That rendition will echo through the ages.
Oh You are a life saver. Been trying for years to get this. You've made an old rugby fan very happy
I believe the BBC never released it on DVD, only VHS! This match made me a lifelong rugby fan.
One of my favourite all time sporting memories. Thanks for posting this.
Great match, I also remember passing Bill Beaumont on the Sunday morning when entering the Grosvenor Hotel, understandably he looked slightly the worse for wear.
The line up at the anthem. Hard Scottish men. What a team of forwards
Scotland won this match just from the anthem ... what an atmosphere
The birth of Flower of Scotland as the National anthem. Marvelous!
It's a total dirge. Even in 1990 it seemed dated and backward-looking.
Flower of Shitland
@@littlezit2 Fucked you over though you prick!
Only anthem that defines itself against another country. That really is pathetic? Bannockburn was only Round One. They then got their arses kicked.
@@stephenreeds3672 Unlike your morbid arselicking tune that your told Sing. We choose our own! Written by the People for the People.
Ahhh the old days of half time get togethers in a circle on the pitch and trays of orange segments.... 😁
How we miss Bill McLaren...wi' the pish we get these days
John jeffries best Scottish player done all the hard work without getting the praise

Aye. Im with you there. Always feeling that we'll throw it on the replay!
A great Scottish side. A great English team. A great game.
I didnt watch Rugby except by 1997 and 98 5 Nations and I liked the English Team of The late 90s early 2000s.

Wales home v Scotland, sorry.
I was 7 years old 1990 I was born 14 off March 1983
Excellent
Great comentator
That drive at 11:00 was the moment I thought we would win.
l'écosse avait la meilleure troisième ligne de tous les temps !!
merci bien
14:19 - This must be the moment of the most famous photo of this game, right?
01:20 Bill McLaren - "some good-natured booing" - aye right Bill, it was 'good-natured' !!! (Lol)
FT- A good natured shoeing
Mark bailey!....Christ England must have been short of wingers that season .
Great win. You can tell how much rugby has moved on though. Not one of those players make it in the Scotland side today!
Hastings G perhaps
They were amateurs for goodness sake! They had other jobs.
Different era & they had normal bodies. The forwards now are just far too big & it's dangerous. They should have a body weight limit I feel on the forwards definitely.
Good memories

Not often you see a pitch invasion after an international rugby game.
Not these days, but back then it was common, particularly at Murrayfield where the schoolboy's enclosure was pitch side and there was no fence in front of the East and West stands
just magnificent

Always good to see the arrogant Will Carling, Jeremy Guscott and Brian Moore upset.
"Good natured booing"
2 good teams
