Thanks for checking out my MIDI Guitar video! I did another video where I played 20 theme songs on my guitar with a MIDI pickup. Check it out here: ruclips.net/video/HpkashMAKcc/видео.html
I use this on my acoustic gigs w/ my 12-string. I use Sample Tank in the app and with the orchestra strings behind my 12-string, it sounds HUGE and beautiful! Tracking is great!
Hey Scott, I have both Fishman triple play and MIDI Jam Origin. I cannot get my mind on which one to use live. They both have they pro and cons. Given that I will be mostly using chords (fast pace though), which one you would recomend for performing live?
Either one really should be fine. They both seem to have pros and cons as you mentioned. I haven't found that one is significantly better than the other one. They both seem to be good, but not perfect (which again, guitar MIDI wasn't designed to be perfect)
Thanks 🙏🏼 picked up a few tips- I’ve been using this for a while but still missed some things, excellent presentation! We’re spoiled as guitarists with iPads such amazing synths available at a steal. What are some of your favs?
Glad you liked the video! And for apps, I keep it super simple with SampleTank... I need to explore more! I had a bunch a while back, but I need to visit them again
Excellent tutorial, Scott! You have a very pleasant way of explaining these issues!I always wanted a midi guitar way back in the middle 90s, and Steinberg were very helpful - but my bank manager wasn't... I'm refitting my Yamaha electric guitar, and this is the software and interface I'll prbably go for, with an iRig and a farely recent iPad! Thanks again, my 74 years won't seem a day too long!
Thanks for the video. Really informative. Question, playing live, could I place I-rig interface after the a/b box? I would like to run one path through my pedalboard into my amp, and the other path through the I-rig into the iPad
Just amazing... Was hunting for something like this precisely... I have a Windows 10 running Ableton Intro License... What are the limitations of the trial version of MIDI GUITAR 2...? Secondly, is it wise to buy a Focusrite audio interface or Behringer for this usage? Am a beginner for midi guitar... Would a similar setup work for a mandolin instead of guitar? I have both...And gonna try both for sure. Thanks in advance. Pune city, INDIA
In the trial version, it just cuts out every minute or so. And yes any audio interface will definitely be very useful. And I believe it will work with mandolin as well or any stringed instrument, but it might not be as accurate as the guitar. But I’ve never tried that actually. Cheers 👍
I think you understood the guitar section a bit wrong. I doubt the idea is to use it to split the signal. Many of the presets at least on the PC version include both the guitar and midi instrument sides simultaneously, using effects like the Deep Harmonic EQ or the Deep Expressor in the Guitar pipeline to create a sound that's already quite synth like for the guitar, then adding midi sounds on top of that. In the presets on PC there's for example the patch Deep Techno Fluty, which doesn't use midi at all, and only uses the Deep Expressor effect to create a synth like sound from just the guitar signal. Kinda like how the Electro-Harmonix Synth9 pedal and the Boss SY-line of pedals create synth like sounds without midi, just by processing the guitar signal. One added benefit of this is that there's even less delay, since it doesn't have to perform any note identification, it's just modifying the input sound.
Using the trial version I found there was too much latency even with the buffer set at the lowest value. Do you have that issue with this app? Any advice? Is the fishman any different as far as latency is concerned?
Have you tried to record midi with the Tripleplay? because i just bought the Tripleplay and it works well as a stand alone but when I open it through the FL Studio for recording it doesn't bend notes .. that's how I've found your video about the Jam Origin because without bending notes the Tripleplay just doesn't make sense
Hi Scott. I commented on your other video yesterday and today and I subscribed . Its nice to see a fellow midi guitarist doing awesome guitar work. I sent a follow up comment/question today on your other Triple play video asking about the latency differences between the wireless TP with a Mac verses the iPad pro. I'm so hoping the latency is not greater with the iPad pro. I hope to do some cool things with it if it not slower in its data flow. On another topic, can you tell me if there is greater latency with the Jam Origin verses the Triple Play on the iPad? Thank you kindly for you time in reading this
Thank you for subscribing, and I'm glad you've found the videos helpful! I don't notice much of a difference in latency at all between the TP and Jam Origin. They both seem to work just fine. Just going off of being logical, my guess would be the TriplePlay works better because you get a pickup for each string. But I honestly haven't found any time when Jam Origin has messed up, even without needing an external pickup. Both are completely fine to use for sure. I do find my TP gets "stuck" on notes more often than the Jam Origin one does though.
You can definitely play chords with this. I haven’t found any chord that it wasn’t able to play, but any pickup that has individual string pickups I would guess would be better at figuring out altered dominate chords. But this app is still really incredible and works well
The keyboard and chord wheel are for seeing what notes you are playing on your guitar… Pluck a note and the note key will illuminate It’s more handy than having the tuner on the screen I find
I have the Fishman triple play as well.... and I like both of them. I honestly don’t feel much of a difference when I switch between them. They are both great
@@ScottUhlMusic I have noticed while playing around with the trial version of the PC one that in some situations at least with my guitars it has some issues getting all notes to trigger. Like I'm doing finger plucked two note power chords (so root and fifth), and in some regions of the neck it struggles to pick up the fifth consistently. If I just do the fifth alone it picks it up really easily, very sensitive, but combined with the root at the same time it can struggle a bit. I would expect that on a hexaphonic pickup like the Triple Play or the GK-3 it wouldn't have these issues, since both strings are listened to separately, instead of trying to figure them out from a mess of noise. Any experiences with issues like this?
How can you use this to control a dedicated hardware guitar synth? Like the boss sy-1000? Or is it better to just skip that and just find other sound apps to create what you're looking for? Also, how would you use this in conjunction with a regular pedalboard?
You could split your signal and go one to audio/pedal board and then one to iPad/computer for midi. I’ve never used the sy1000 so I’m not sure about that
You would just have to route the audio in the way you wanted to. You could use a splitter to send to both an iPad running this app and quad cortex for example 👍
have the tracking of polyphonic maj and min 2nds intervals improved in the latest version? Does the desktop have the 2.5 version as well as the mobile one?
I didn’t notice any problems when playing along to this app with any intervals. And the latest iPad version is 2.7.7, so I imagine the desktop version is up to date as well
Wow that's incredible that you can do all that with no hardware. The only thing that makes me prefer the fishman triple play is that it can do different sounds for each string but is that worth more than twice the money
its pretty good, although when using a piano, i noticed it played aload of bum notes i didn't even play.. i went for the jamstik midi guitar in the end.. but this is great start if you on a budget..
Yeah a guitar is not meant to play midi so you have to be really precise with how you play. Piano especially. But i still really like this app for sure!
@@ScottUhlMusic i got my jam stik today, and honestly it performs no better than jam origin plug in, it plays aftertouch and bum notes... i wish i stuck with the plugin tbh.. everything is a lesson..cheers dude..
I keep getting some random notes while i'm playing... And it is really anoying... Like, I don't play them, but they are added into the mix anyway, and the sound kind of turns into a mess... Do you have any advice on that?
Usually it’s from things like fret noise and the midi can’t figure out if it’s notes or noise so it translates it into notes. You definitely have to play a little differently when you play midi guitar. You have to play a lot “cleaner” for sure
There are many reasons why this isn’t working and there isn’t really a way for me to problem solve with just that info. Keep messing with settings and trial and error and change guitars and cables to see what works and what doesn’t. Best of luck!
Thanks for a very informative video - appreciate it. Do you know if there’s a way to play this in to a DAW like Ableton to record the midi data so I can edit it in my laptop?
Why are you not able to play kick? If it’s because a kick is normally played as the C below the low E string (and snare is the D below the low E string) when converted to MIDI, try messing with the transposer. So if you set the transposer down an octave, when you play fret 3 on A string (note C), you should be able to trigger a kick. It just depends which app you are controlling. I guarantee there is a way to do it if that doesn’t work. You just have to mess with it.
I would probably really like the GR-55 better than this too, but if we use the PC version as a standard, it costs like 150€, where the GR-55 without the GK-3 costs 750€... I think this is a really good way to dip your toes into guitar midi stuff, and you can then start looking at the higher end solutions if you think you really want to follow that path. Especially since you can try this out for free on PC.
