      My advice, as per usual, when it comes to ANY kind of pitch-to-MIDI conversion is if you want total accuracy, use a keyboard. There will always be tracking issues and you'll have to adapt your playing style to the technology, not the other way around. So any problems you are experiencing are to be expected as I've never found a system that is 100% without compromise.

      Indeed, as computers get faster and have more spare processing capacity (I'm thinking of those Apple M1 chips), I do believe that will happen. But it won't be a hardware solution, it will be a software solution. But I imagine it won't necessarily be a guitar product, but more a pitch-to-midi application you might find in software such as Ableton. Stay inspired!

    • @DarrenLockMusic
      @DarrenLockMusic  Год назад

      I'm not wrong. You need the cleanest, loudest (without distortion) signal from the guitar to the plugin in order to get the best response. I don't understand why you'd want to alter the ADSR to match a synth patch. That would be counter productive. But hey, I've been using guitar synths for about thirty years now...so don't listen to me. I know nothing!

      @@DarrenLockMusic why would i want to play with the ADSR on the original signal ? i have been into modular synthesis about 20 or so years now . max control creativity and experimentation is the word im looking for i guess.
      in the 90s i had this zoom multi effects pedal. on one of the patches you could add distortion and also alter the ADSR i remember making a sound with a very slow attack rate and release . it sounded effing awesome when playing harmonics through it , i then made a slow orchestral string with low cutoff frequency and max resonance creating a type of harmonic sound on my JV1080, i played the same notes for the orchestral string to match the guitar then bounced them to one track . i added the sound to an ambiant track i was making and i then used the finished product for my leeds uni music tech interview. well it got me in uni and the ambi track was actually used by my lecturer in a few lessons as an example of creativity for other students who were fixated on the 4 to the floor bass line and synth tunes . why would you want to change the ADSR ? why not ?

      But if its price, don't ignore pawn shops, garage sales and the like.
      Its a nice thing feeling a small tremor every time you strum an open string. Also, the mass of these strings can can help guide your composition and give you some killer sustain that is worth experiencing.

      @@DarrenLockMusic Hi Darren, thanks for the reply... There's actually a bit of a trend I see where people with experience in Midi playing on guitar say it's a bit of a gimmick, very expensive etc. I just wanted to make sure I'm hearing you correctly though... I was wondering if you would say a Roland GK3 would pick up the notes and durations quite better than the software only option would? The software is a good way to get my feet wet in this style...

    • @DarrenLockMusic
      @DarrenLockMusic  3 года назад +2

      Any better? Ooooh, that's a complicated question. You do have to adapt your playing style no matter what way you try to do MIDI guitar. You will get different results on different guitars. Don't expect to "shred" and the MIDI pickup to track you. Even if you play the same thing multiple times, sometimes it may track differently. The MIDI pickups have improved since the GK2 & GK2A - the RMC piezo pickups are tight, but then you've also got the Fishman Tripeplay systems to consider. But if you want something that you will fuck around endlessly fiddling with, then MIDI guitar is the life path for you. Alternatively, consider pedals that transform your guitar audio to synthy style like the Electro Harmonix ones. The best advice would be to actually go to a music shop and try one of these systems and you'll see for yourself if it is the sort of thing you want to waste your time and money on. Then ask yourself: is this really going to serve me and my music creation? Now, there are so many other cheaper and more fun options (like Guitar MIDI 2 and the plugin of your choice or hardware pedals that mimic synths - like the Synth 9). But personally, I wouldn't advise anyone to go down the hardware MIDI guitar route...not because of tracking accuracy, but because one day you'll wake up find that Roland no longer supports the hardware you've purchased!!!

      Its quite easy to create these "quick reviews" of gear when there is so much more information lacking. I have a MacBook Pro Retina and a Focusright 18i8 Interface so I'm not running some old system with Logic Pro X. I'm running Tons of Amplitube FX from TRacks for MIxing and you have to figure out the latency when I'm running 4,5,6 plugs ins! Unless your some computer "geek" who knows all about MIDI and find it hard to explain to people the setup, latency, channel setup, its going to be frustrating for you and feeling stupid after spending 100 bucks on this! After seeing there is a newer version of Roland MIDI pickup I'd wish I knew this before coughing up 100 bucks to pay for this. If I was you, or anyone reading this, save your money and buy the Roland MIDI device and save yourself headaches figuring out latency of the incompetency of people posting these fantasy everything is going to be perfect as soon as you plug in your instrument and whale away at your guitar to sound like a massive church pipe organ! I have watched tons and tons of You tube videos and VERY VERY VERY few people take any time to show videos on how to set these things up, they all do the same crap... review the sounds! It took me hours last night to set up my MDI Guitar to run on Logic Pro and open up another program like T Racks to run other Synth sounds because the MIDI Guitar App is a bit lame on the Synth sounds! Try overlapping a few Synth sounds on your DAW track and your going to get it to crash! It crashed on me several times and there are features on Logic Pro pertaining to latency NOT JUST ADJUSTING THE BUFFER SIZE! I'm going to work on this again later today so I can fix this/these problems before buying what I think I should of at first but did not know there was such one and that is.. a Roland MID device to your guitar. If you just want to take your music to a "hobby" level then this plug in app is for you but taken your music serious is worth spending 200+ for the Roland device! I'm sure you will have to adjust latency with the Roland pick up but at least your much closer to reducing your headache using the MIDI pickup and not fool like a "jack ass" after spending 100 bucks on a plug in app where even the instructions are lame! Gee, I feel compelled ot do a video on this and with thiese words! In fact, you know what? I am! If anyone wants to see it, goto my channel in a few days or even week and I'll have one done very extensive and fully informative and NOT just a "oh check this out.. ok, so thats my review." If you want to learn, go to my channel and hopefully we can work on fixing THE DREADED LATENCY DEMON! Gee, I just found my tittle also. Imagine that! im at HEADBANGER MINISTRIES You Tube Channel. I wrote this because I'm pissed at so many You tube videos being lame and focus on just how it sounds. A l of us are stoopid and we need help, like me! Duh!

    Is this software less/more percise than a hex pickup like the FTP? I tried this software and it's completely messy and glitchy and more annoying than helpful. I am considering getting the FTP connect as it seems more suited for what I am doing and seems to track better. The thing I wonder about is whether the FTP is equally as "good" as MGII, or whether it actually tracks better and more precisely and cleanly? Most people on YT don't seem to push these devices hard enough, so it's hard to tell how it would fair in my situation, as most of what people play is slow chords/strumming or slow stuff, as opposed to fast thrash riffing, which is what I am doing.

    • @DarrenLockMusic

      You will never be totally happy with guitar to MIDI. If you want to spend money on hardware that will age, lose support, go wrong and never quite satisfies you, then go ahead. There’s a whole rabbit hole for you to waste your time, money and music making efforts on. This is a good compromise for those who are not looking for perfection, because from what you’ve said, you will never be able to achieve what you think MIDI guitar promises. Also, you do have to adjust your playing style to get half decent results with MIDI guitar. Or you could just spend the time learning the keyboard… 😂😂😂
