    My reasons for using software over hardware (not only for MIDI but also for amp sims and FX) is because my work requires me to travel constantly so I carry my headless Steinberger guitar, Windows laptop, iPad and a small audio interface, all fits in my carry-on, I hope version 3 is released soon for Windows and iOS

      I have a similar setup for my most mobile stuff. And I also prefer to have everything (including Amp sims and fx) on the computer, and preferably saved down to the patches when possible. And I too hope that MG3 is coming to all platforms soon enough, but that is completely out of my hands, unfortunately. 👍

    I’m waiting for the day when I can do all of this(as well as use all of my Kontakt libraries and Omnisphere) with my iPhone. I live in a van and have limited power from a solar panel and can’t always run my laptop for very long or even have it with me all of the time when it could be stolen. I use the Boss Katana Air, which is a very portable amp with lots of effects. It’s really cool for traveling around and playing in the park or in the woods but I always wish I could have all of my midi stuff too. The pace at which technology progresses makes me think we’re close to what I described but we’ll see…

    Oooooh! This is going on my Christmas list! I remember when Cakewalk came out with the first (I think) guitar MIDI controller that you put under the strings of your guitar. They eventually abandoned this approach because it was clunky and never really emulated the sound of a guitar. Instead, they focused on perfecting their DAW, which I used for years, but I've been looking at interfaces and feel that none of them do what I want. The possibilities with this little gem are awesome, and I wish I'd known about MIDI Guitar 2, cuz I woulda been all the way on board with that! (My professor told me about this today, and literally, goosebumps!)

    • @lofileif

      So why not have Christmas come early and get on board right now? The beta testing is open for anyone to take part. You don't need to report anything, or even sign up I think. Just head on over to the JamOrigin beta page and take a look in the DOWNLOADS section for a demo, and there is no need to feel you have missed out on anything. If you need a video to start with I have this overview:

      And after that you can probably start exploring the possibilities of MIDI Guitar 3. I also have videos on the interface and all the modules and stuff we have up until now. Just go through this channel starting with this, perhaps?

    AMAZING video. I just discovered MIDI fx for electric instruments yesterday. My girlfriend is a professional violinist and is getting an electric violin this christmas, and I was looking for some cool guitar fx she could apply to it and found out about the existance of this kind of software, which absolutely blew my mind (I play bass and guitar and did not know any of this was actually possible lol). When I first loaded up guitar midi 2 I was totally blown away.
    I was watching your video thinking "this is amazing and all but it looks so complicated, I wonder if there's a good beginners guide somewhere"... and I scrolled a bit and found you actually have a lot of videos covering this!
    Again, really amazing video and thanks for sharing your knowledge!!

Now, the important stuff first, this software is going to be available for your girlfriend as well (in a violin version). Can you, please, tell if MG3 can *output* MIDI? Hence, is it possible to use MG3 to control someting which is not "mounted" to this program itself, for example a VST instrument mounted in my DAW, or can I record its output to a MIDI track?

      Yes, yes and yes are the simple answers to your questions. MG3 has a MIDI output device that you can place anywhere on any of the chains, and anything that can input MIDI (as your VSTs in standalone or in a DAW) or even an external synth can use that MIDI/MPE.

    You're timing couldn't have been better. Just yesterday, I was lamenting not having a good solution for playing MIDI via my guitar. I've looked at the various hardware solutions, but the expense, guitar modifications, and less than stellar results were unacceptable. Software MIDI solutions didn't fare much better due to various types of pitch accuracy issues, and constraints on how to play the guitar for good MIDI translation.
    MIDI Guitar 2 caught my attention about a year ago, and that was when I had real hope that good MIDI via a regular guitar could be achievable soon. MIDI Guitar 3 looks like that day is arriving. Do you know about when it will be available on Windows to try it out?
    Thanks for all your great videos on MIDI for guitar. Your expertise, knowledge, pragmatic approach, and Demos show there is a viable way forward for those of us who prefer Software solutions. Thanks

    What an amazing creation!!! Is the alt tuning functionality available in MG3 beta, if not WHEN? This feature solves the midi guitar software conundrum for me! I’m still using my VG-99 precisely because of multiple custom tunings.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  7 месяцев назад

      There is a RETUNER module in MG3 now, where you can incrementally change any or all of the individual pitches of any octave split (between 6-18 notes) of your choice . You can also load tuning files into it, changing tuning/temperament that way. If you are thinking of alternate tunings like DADGAD and such, MG# doesn't recognize strings. It only recognize pitches, and any group of pitches can be retuned or harmonized in particular ways, but traditional retuning will have to wait until/if MIDI Guitar 3 get hexPU support.

  • @pedrorafaromero
    @pedrorafaromero 3 месяца назад +1

    Why not both? I already have the hardware, and plan to buy Midi Guitar 3…. Also, I just bought a Roland VG99: this is a different paradigm that goes beyond simple MIDI conversion: take an hexaphonic signal and transform it into whatever guitar you want… creative possibilities multiply then… A question: does MIDI Guitar 3 work with hexaphonic signals from hardware? (That would be the best of both worlds!)

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  3 месяца назад +1

      What I talked about in this video was my personal reasons for choosing the software alternative going forward. And it is not meant as a jab at anyone choosing something else. I believe there is room for all of us to exist and set up in whatever way we like. MY reasons for choosing software were 1)Portability and 2) Sound. I own the VG8, the VG99, the GR55, the GP10 and stuff like the WP20G still. There is no sound in any of those that I can't replicate (to some degree of accuracy) if I feel like it. So there is no uniqueness factor there. The MIDI output from any of those units (that can output MID) is not as good as the MG3 MIDI of today, so that is not an argument. Then there is the overview argument when creating sounds: I can sit with all synths/instruments open in one view rather than fiddling my way through submenus to submenus. So that is my reasoning. It does of course not stop here, but you get my point.
      To your question: No, the MG3 software doesn't work with a HexPU at this point, but take a look at the forum posts and you will see that the developer has talked about it as a potential addition. 👍

    • @pedrorafaromero
      @pedrorafaromero 3 месяца назад +1

      @@lofileif I agree that the software provides better note tracking or expressivity, that’s why I mentioned I plan to buy Midi guitar 3. I didn’t buy the VG 99 (and previously a VG8) for its MIDI conversion, but for its capability as a single-string audio processor (where tracking it’s not an issue). That, I believe, is the real strength of VG technology. MIDI conversion was never good enough for transmitting the nuances of guitar playing, imho.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  3 месяца назад

      First off, let me state for the record, I loved the VG99 for as long as I used it. Not for its MIDI OUT, but for all the possibilities to create patches with weird tunings and whatnot. I can still use the GP10 for the purpose of being able to assign separate instruments to separate strings, but nowadays I use 6 instances of the MG2 software in MONOmode at the receiving end of the 6 audio streams I can get out of the hexPU via the GP10 USB OUT. So as far as single-string processing goes I am too using something else than Roland's sounds. But as you mentioned in your first post, it is indeed a combination of the Roland hardware and the JamOrigin software as a best-of-both-worlds solution. But It can also be done with a breakout cable into a 6-channel audio interface with the same result.
      But it always sounds like I am putting the Roland stuff down, and that is not my intention. I loved the Acoustic sounds of the VG8 tank, and the magic that was my first entry into guitar synths with the GR33. It is just that it was then, this is now. I understand to appreciate both. 👍

      The breath controller is just that, a controller. And if you want to control something (anything with MG3) in real-time, you need some controller. Mg3 has a lot of ways of varying the dynamics, with the help of modulators and stuff, but if you want deliberate control you also need another controller. But you can use a pedal if you like. I started with a Roland GR synth, and went on to the Roland and Axon guitar-to-midi interfaces. It opened a new world for me, and I sold my hardware units back when Jamorigin MidiGuitar 2 came out. I was actually worried I couldn't sell it, if people had discovered there was a software solution. My experience was that MidiGuitar 2 was that is was least equal in latency and response to my old hardware units, but for a lot less money, and a lot simpler to set up. Now MidiGuitar 3 is absolutely best-practice gear for midi guitar, imo, just fantastic. I never play live with it, though, as midi guitar got me interested in learning keyboards (which I have to a basic level), but I use midi guitar to record, frequently. Recently bought an M1 MacBook Air, my main focus these days being MPC Live2 & Akai Force along with various guitars and vocals. Question is, Will Midi guitar 2, and 3 work on M1 'Air' (low spec 8gig ram a pensioner budget special) Also, and if so, would 2 come with automatic upgrade to 3, or should I just wait for 3. Would download demo of 2 as a test but that may exclude a demo of 3, so would I be best to just wait for 3 before trying.

      Hi Stephen! MG2 will definetly work, and for most uses MG3 on an M1 computer should be fine. But it all depends on what instrument you are going to play, and a lot of other factors, like sometimes real-time control over some instruments parameters is unreasonably CPU hungry. My advice is always, don't take anybody's word for it - try the demo instead. And I believe you (as a Mac user ) can get both versions demos right now. Hey - I am here again. Not sure if you saw my response to our other thread. But no worries - you don't need to respond back. But I have another question for you. May be you can share some thoughts.
    Is there any difference in MIDI output quality between these two workflows.
    1. Record in a track of a DAW a regular acoustic guitar. A single line melody or polyphony. Then use MIDI guitar 3 plugin and have it detect the MIDI notes and generate them in another track.
    vs.
    2. Setup the MIDI guitar 3 plugin and have it generate MIDI from live playing.
    Will the result be exactly same or one may have less quality because of any technical reasons?
    Why I am asking this.
    I don't have a silent guitar right now. No electric guitar as well. I have one acoustic with a pickup though. It is convenient to use a silent guitar to test out MIDI performance live because the acoustic noise will not confuse me. But if workflow #1 is just as good then I can simply record my guitar. And then convert it to MIDI. I don't need to buy another silent/electric guitar.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  3 месяца назад +1

      The big difference between the two methods is probably in how we can alter and amend our playing (input) to yield better results when listening to what the output of the triggered instrument really sounds like. Not all instruments are triggered alike, and there are important dynamics settings that might help us out too. I generally don't suggest recording something for MIDI purposes without listening to the whole chain (also the triggered output), but of course it is possible to take a recorded instrument WAV file and have MG3 convert that to MIDI after the fact. Any resonance, anywhere in the signal chain, will be slightly detrimental to the result with either method.

    • @jeetray11
      @jeetray11 3 месяца назад

      @@lofileif I like the thought that based on live performance, we have the option to change playing dynamics for better results which is not available in the after the fact workflow. Thank you. So do you think, if I want to test out the Jamorigin MIDI guitar 3 with its fullest potential I should look for a silent electric guitar (or just regular electric guitars)? I don't play steel string guitars, only nylon. But I have a steel string acoustic with a pick up. If a silent guitar is useful I would shop for a nylon strung silent guitar with a pickup.

    I'm stuck between going the software route and hardware route. I'd prefer hardware for the hands-on feel and knob turning, but being locked into a 6 string or ~4 octaves for the GK5 pickup is a huge turnoff. I play 8 string guitars for more range to transcribe songs from film and video games.
    I guess if I'm ending up in Cubase or Ableton anyway, I might as well use a hybrid setup: MIDI Guitar 2 + some VSTs (Komplete 14 CE), and run a Radial EXTC Stereo for an effects loop of guitar pedals.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  7 месяцев назад

      To each his own. We all do what feels best for us. I am not comfortable with any 8-string. Luckily, it seems, as most setups struggle with extended range instruments. I can still access the same low tunings, of course, but retuning the output. And I love the idea of having everything already set up in patches, and just connect my instrument and controllers. But it is just a matter of taste I think. I am to old to be carrying a lot of gear around. I rather show up with just a computer and a guitar. 👴💻🎸

      If you are talking about the GR55 MIDI OUT vs the JamOrigin MG3 MIDI functionality, pretty bad. It has more latency and is also dynamically truncated and compressed. So, you’ll be hard pressed to find and virtual intruments that handles well with that. But as always, this is my OPINION. 😀👍

    I did all the Roland GK3, still have a few guitars with 13-pin, mostly for my SY-1000. However, I also play keys, and now with MPE and polyphonic aftertouch, keyboards can also be expressive.
    For expressive keyboard control, MPE, I use a KMI Kboard-Pro-4, 48-keys, usually for leads; for everything else velocity and mono aftertouch - both common - work fine.
    Unfortunately MIDI keyboard controllers and keyboards that support MPE, poly AT, are few, and often expensive, but should be more common in a few years.
    FWIW, I don't use my keyboards to sound like guitars, and vice versa. Finally having true expression with MPE capable keyboards is great, and I no longer follow or care about guitar synths such as the GM-800. Keeping my SY-1000 and SY-300 because I have guitars with GK3/13-pin, and patches I created.
    IMO

    Any chance you could help with routing an expression pedal to various parameters in a SWAM Auv3 (in loopy pro would be precisely what im trying to do, however any exposure to midi mapping the pedal to an auv3 instance would be pointing me in the right direction)?

      I believe everything is in the video already, but here goes: Nothing goes on the guitar per se, you use your traditional guitar cable to get your traditional guitar audio into the audio interface (using your standard pickups on your guitar - no MIDI). Audio is converted into MIDI inside the computer with the help of the JamOrigin software MIDI Guitar 2/3. I sometimes use a wireless Audio transmitter to send that signal though. I have settled on the Xvive U2 receiver/transmitter, but there is no research put into comparing alternatives. Those were what was available. I am using wireless MIDI to send my breath controller MIDI to the computer as well, and for that I am using the CME WIDI Uhost within the confines of my studio. Were I to hit the stage I would probably go for the sturdier and more long-range Panda Audio midiBeam setup that I also own. This is a little more than was in this video, but I have videos on almost everything on this channel if you are interested. 👍

    Bro - if I have to make a guess - you are the main designer and engineer for JamOrigin MIDI guitar. Am I right? Your talk kind of gives it away. I have been desperate to get my hands on a reliable MIDI guitar solution for years and couldn't find anything yet. I tried JamOrigin MIDI guitar (I think 2) about 2 years ago and it was clunky and generated too much spurious notes that I wasn't even playing. I have been since then convinced that audio to MIDI is just not going to work. Because from audio signal there is just no way to know what are harmonics and what actual fret was pressed. So some kind of fret detection would be the most ideal. But for the reasons you provided, too pricey and also not as reliable and clunky guitar interface that prohibits me to play my most comfortable instrument are definitely reasons to push the software solution hard. The thing is there is no limit how much one can push software. And now there is AI that may have a potential use to apply on get better accuracy. I pray hard for you guys to land something that serves my purpose. Clean MIDI notes from my guitar, only the notes that I pluck. Thank you for taking up this challenge!!!
    Oh - in this video I liked your headless black guitar. Can you share the model name please.

    • @lofileif
      @lofileif  3 месяца назад +1

      Hi! Well, I hate to disappoint you right off the bat, but no, I am not the designer and engineer behind this product. I am just a guy like you who tried this software a couple of years ago (2018), but I guess I went in the opposite direction. I loved it, picked it up, and haven't put it down since. But to be fair this was the second time around for me. I tried it in 2015 (i think) and just as you I wasn't all that impressed, and went on to buy a lot more expensive hardware for a couple of more years.
      Nowadays I am pretty convinced audio to MIDI can do pretty astonishing stuff, even if it can't recognize where you are on your neck (yet). But is that really necessary though? Think of it like this, we have six separate strings, and on neither of these strings can you find the same exact pitch twice. There might be a way to identify unique identities after all? Just saying.
      There is absolutely a limit to how much you can push software and it is decided by our physical nature, but I won't go into that since it is a rather tedious discussion to have here.
      You are free to try the software in its current stage of development of course. If you visit the beta page and look in the Downloads section you can grab a trial version for yourself.

      @@lofileif - Ouch - a bad guess in a long time. I think you were saying 'we did this' - some use of 'we' about the JamOrigin product. May be I was hearing it wrong. Thank you for the quick reply on the guitar model and sharing your thoughts about some of my comments.
      Does the MIDI guitar need to know what string, what fret was pressed? NO. But, my comment was probably a bit confusing about fret detection. What I wanted to say - if the string and fret is known and the tuning is known the pitch can be rendered as a MIDI note with 100% accuracy. This is where the fret recognition part was relevant from my comment.
      If the software need to detect it from audio signal, it has too much unwanted audio info that increases the chance of mis-recognition and generating more than one pitch and other errors. I still believe using whatever technical knowledge I have (which is far from sufficient) that audio to pitch is a problematic approach. MIDI keyboards never had to deal with audio to pitch approach - that is why they have been always reliable.
      What I don't understand is why people cannot still make a simple MIDI guitar using whatever sensor technology to detect string, fret position and force to generate MIDI information. It is just beyond me. Jammy from Ukraine were going in the right direction but recently they got shutdown for War or whatever.
      I don't have money to try the expensive MIDI guitars that are 2K or higher. I got a Jamstik+ recently and that doesn't even work on Windows/Reaper. It works on Iphone and it uses Infrared sensing and magnetic pickup sort of stuff and still has issues with spurious notes especially on Polyphony.
      I am a software engineer for 30+ years. When I meant software can be pushed infinitely - I didn't mean it can push beyond physical limitation. Software cannot disintegrate you and send you to North Pole at the speed of light and reassemble you. I assumed this wouldn't need an explanation. By 'there is no limit how much software can be pushed' I simply meant that it can be iterated indefinitely to acquire higher precision. Just look at AI's current state which is nothing but software and algorithms and data and it can take a prompt and make a movie or Mozart's 80th symphony. What I was thinking when I wrote it - is if pitch can be reliably detected from the audio signal - and if we understand audio signal extremely well that it is possible to extract the pitch 100% reliably - then it can be achieved eventually through software. But if there is an intrinsic problem that cannot be solved - then this is a dead-end approach. Then we have to go back to that sensor/scanning approach.
      What kind of intrinsic problem we are talking about here. Let me give an analogy.
      If I give you just a number say 7 and ask you to recognize the two numbers I added up to get 7 - you can never reliably tell me those numbers. It can be 2 + 5 or 4 + 3 or many other variations. Imagine the audio signal has data that can potentially contain information of two different pitches say C and G and both are equally strong. Then software cannot detect it reliably.
      Thank you!

      What about fishman tripleplay pickup compared to midi guitar 3?
      I mean, Jamstick is probably not the best reference point for "midi hardware technology".
      What puzzles me with the former comment is, when playing any midi instrument I have (either thru usb or directly midi cable into the soundcard) to put the lowest sample possible.
      Every single time I go above 64 there is noticeable latency. Latency is not related to midi, but all sounds coming out of my soundcard.
      So being able to play without latency at 256 sample, I don't believe it at all. Please enlight me !

      Please tell Jam Origin to make the MG3 Windows & iOS progress more visible. In all honesty my one issue with not going with MG2 a few years ago was the lack of being able to tell how supported it is. IOW, is this just some developers pet project or is it serious and will be supported far into the future. I feel confident that the later is the case especially with the announcement of MG3, but it still seems like there’s not enough resources available for development.
      Without getting into a Windows vs. Mac debate, I’m surprised that both platforms were not being developed simultaneously. Or even Windows taking precedence over Mac. Mac no longer holds the creative world hostage. Regardless, I’m very interested and excited to get working with MG3. In case your wondering why not get started with MG2? I have other ways to get midi guitar sounds now and would rather start fresh with what seems like a very significant upgrade in features and UI. Thanks.

I am taking the brunt from that lack of information anyway as every third comment I respond to concerns precisely that. Regarding the company, it IS indeed a one-man production. But you should probably not question his resolve to deliver the best possible product, as MG3 has been seven years in the making and still it is going to be free for all previous MG2 users.
      The reason for starting developing and testing for Mac and porting to iOS and Windows later is his decision, and I guess it is as simple as a strategy to handle feedback and troubleshooting. I'll let him know how you feel, but out of curiosity, where have you searched for information? And where do you think it should be, to be easily found, in your opinion?

    Thanks for the profound information about the vast possibilities of MIDI Guitar 3 - if one wants to go down the more synth oriented rabbit hole, I totally agree with your view. I am however more traditionally oriented as sounds and playing technique are concerned and have found a combination of hardware (BOSS GM-800) and software (Gig Performer 4) to be my favorite solution. I control my patch settings in the hardware and can use all combinations of virtual instruments and plugins inside of Gig Performer - I even use it for my vocal effects and pickup guitar sound. Good or not is going to be depending on HOW you play those I would say. If you are a clean picker/strummer like Joe Pass or Jim Hall you can get away with almost everything. I use five/six notes in my chords all the time (and I am NO Joe Pass 😄), and the difference from using MG2 is incredible. Will it beat the clarity/sparation in a hexPU setup?
