getting my own authority 4 years ago was a nightmare . I was paying my premium ( $ 877.00 a mo. ) for 2 Mo while I was waiting for my approval. If I hadnt had a substantial cushion I would have been sunk even B4 I started . I was not given any indication it was the waiting game . Im thinking of getting back into doing just cars as I am in an area where cars are paying very well but I need to get the insurance straightened out for sure . Progressive was about the best I could find .
The waiting game = all documents submitted including proper insurance verification ( paid up ) but NO confirmation, in my case from Oklhoma DOT in Oklhoma city . It took them 3 MO. to ok me on their computer system .

I understand the part about insurance agents not wanting to provide quotes for folks that are not serious about going forward. My questions is, how do I become serious about it if I don't know the costs associated with running the business. From my understanding, insurance for this type of business is quite expensive, there are a lot of restriction and requirements, and much of the success in hot shot trucking depends on expenses and how you manage them. So how do I put together a business plan if I cannot ascertain (roughly) what typical expenses are going to be and how much they are going to cost, including business insurance? Seems like a catch 22. Please advise. John

I'm a Broker in Texas and I deal with allot of hotshots and long haul. If you are dealing with a broker that gives you a quote and it changes when you go bind them you need to drop that Broker he's a crooked bastard and who knows where else he's going to cut corners. I agree come to the table with a Loss Runs report. You don't know how many quotes die due to no loss runs. With that said I only deal with insurance carriers that run MVR and CLU reports on their own dime not the client. Progressive, Kemper, Mercury, Guard, BTIS, NEXT, and Infinity are good. Most of your limits will come from the contract carriers you haul for so make sure what you buy is what your client requires. Find a broker that knows commercial auto.
Thanks for the great videos!!! If I change the amount of insurance required or needed after the down payment has been made will I have to pay an additional down payment or will only the monthly payment be effected?
Garaging out of state is tricky and insurance companies don't really like it, even if it's really close...dumb but it's a very archaic industry...It could make the rate lower since Michigan is pretty rough for insurance rates. We'll be adding Michigan to the states we do business in here soon!

I got a question, home state is NY. If I were to acquire out of state insurance, can I register my truck in my home state or registration and insurance have to be in the same state?
I would not recommend trying to incorporate, get insurance, or apply for authority outside of your state of residency. EVERYTHING needs to line up = state of residency, state you are licensed in, state you incorporate in, state you start your authority in, etc....it should all be in the same state....YES, some people have a company setup in another state, but it's a mess and while everything might seem okay to begin with, you will have some serious issues down the road. Start off on the right foot and do things by the book.
Great Video, before I optin for a call or email consultation, my question is do you service the NY area. For the most part progressive is the dominant but not the only insurance in this state. I believe they have roughly 30% of the market in the state of NY. But do you have quotes for a semi truck in NY that's not progressive insurance?

Typically once you get into the high 30's you need to have a solid business plan with dedicated carriers and contracts to remain profitable on a single truck.
The best insurance company is the one that gives you the lowest rate with the most coverage. For new trucking companies, there aren't a lot of options in most states. Once you are established and make it 3-4 years without any claims, you can get to preferred markets (the better insurance companies) and it's actually pretty nice. Rates are significantly cheaper with preferred markets. You just have to have good drivers with low turnover, no claims, solid and well documented safety and operating manuals, etc.

Rental Company Enterprise/Ryder will not rent because its a VIN specific policy... NO one in Illinois will not quote...ONLY one will quote is Progressive but they cant give accurate quote without VIN... How can I rent w/o insurance...
I recommend it, but of course not required if you're under 26k lbs, etc. Depending on the insurance company you go with they might offer discounts and it's not a bad idea to get it now if you don't have one because you might want to change up your operation and go to semi's or CDL-required equipment later on, and you'll need at least two years on your CDL so that you have options for insurance or else you might be limited to one insurance company.
Having the endorsement on your CDL won't make your premiums go up but having hazmat endorsements and the higher limits required for hauling hazmats will definitely result in higher premiums compared to not hauling hazmats.
