  • Champion Pet Food, parent company of Orijen and Acana pet food brands, was recently acquired by Mars Petcare (joining brands like Royal Canin, Pedigree, and Iams).
Take a look at how Champion got to this point: from opening their Kentucky kitchen to selling in PetCo.

To answer the most common question:
Whether or not you switch is totally up to you! As of right now, it appears that their formulation has not made any dramatic changes and is still one of the better foods, especially of those easily available at large pet stores. As a consumer, I would pay attention to changes and evaluate for yourself when/if you feel the need to switch!

Good info! Now following! Like you I'll also be watching for those subtle ingredients changes in Orijen and ACANA - funny how they always change for the worse (or for the better if you're considering profit margin!). Even when the formulation doesn't change it's still possible for suppliers to change, and this often goes unnoticed given ingredients on pet foods are so ambiguous. If there's anything positive to say about this latest acquisition from Mars - if you've visited any of their manufacturing facilities it has to be said they're a very high standard in terms of cleanliness and quality control. BUT! Although I expect Mars will aim to keep Orijen and ACANA two of the most reputable brands (because this means they cover the whole spectrum from budget to "ultra premium") I do expect ingredients and suppliers to change, and they will likely switch to one of their established production facilities. Time will tell. Keep keeping everyone in the loop!!!

In Canada here, I just discovered your video after noticing that the bag changed, with a lot more Chinese writing on the bag. There were 2 of the old bags, which state that the ingredients were all sustainably farmed in Canada. The new bag now says Made In Canada... (from ingredients sourced from around the world) 😥
I bought the two older bags, I think I need to plan an exit from the Acana brand for our two dogs.

Orijen Cat & Kitten was a very popular and trusted kibbel for ferret owners to use. The part you mentioned about companies changing ingredients and not changing the bag to indicate it until 6 months later hits really hard for a lot of ferret owners. Late 2021 they changed the recipe of that food and didn't notify pet owners. The new recipe included more pea content than previous bags. This was a DEADLY choice for us ferret owners because high pea content can and will cause bladder stones in ferrets. This requires immediate and expensive surgery to fix. Unfortunately, my sweet boy had to go through a very traumatic surgery after discovering he had a bladder stone just 5 months after purchasing a new food bag. He did not make it through surgery and we lost him in June of this year. We compared the new food bag to the old recipe and confirmed that the pea content was much higher in the new bag we purchased. We had no way of knowing this. We had purchased the same food for the last 2 years and assumed the recipe would be consistent. Luckily our 2 remaining girls were not affected and we were able to change food immediately and protect them from developing any bladder stones. I'm not the only ferret owner who went through this. So many animals were impacted due to their negligence and lack of respect for our pets

@@blackrain6425 Make sure, though, that Carna4 does not have copper exceeding 5 to 10 fold over the AAFCO minimum. I say this because Carna4 lists liver high in the ingredient deck and then a minimum of filler (grains, legumes, veggies). Looks good, right? WRONG. Copper excess is a problem in general in commercial dog foods but the new, natural, fresher companies who are including liver in their formulas are overdoing it in a lot of cases, in my educated opinion. Some are even dumping in a mineral pre-mix containing more copper when the liver already contributed an excess. Excess copper on a daily basis is killing are dogs slowly. Please look up the Cornell Veterinary College paper on this and DogsNatuallyMagazine's discussion on that on their yt channel.
I bought a couple of bags of Carna4 Goat variety to have on hand, even though I raw formulate and home cook for my dogs (earthquake preparedness food stash) but now that I have been finding out about copper toxicity, I need to call Carna and determine the amounts. Now that I am aware of the copper epidemic problem in dog foods, I know I have to check every brand and variety even for intermittent use.

I live in a town that has an Iams Eukaneuba plant right outside of town. It was the original Iams manufacturer, and when they first started, they made a point of making human-grade food. You could visit the plant and they would demonstrate the human-grade quality of the food by actually eating some. They cared about their employees, they cared about the animal shelters in the area, and they were good for the community and participated in a lot of community events. Then Mars bought the plant. They have turned it into a security-guarded fortress, and nobody is allowed in without a valid reason because they don't want people to know what they are doing. And the quality of the food has gone downhill since. They very reluctantly continued to provide food for one local shelter, but now all the other shelters in the area are on their own and struggling. I hate to see that happen to Orijen and Acana, even if I don't use those brands, just because it seems like it is such an uphill battle to try to reform the pet food industry, and mega industry companies like Mars are impossible to reform.
I'm currently trying to find a replacement dog food for one of my dogs. She got sick a couple months ago, and I "temporarily" switched her to a limited ingredient dog food (Zignature) that was a protein source she had never had before, and now I can't get her to wean off it, but she has developed some symptoms that might indicate that she isn't tolerating that particular protein every well. I was considering trying Orijen or Acana, but not now.

Thank you for the update. I was just thinking of switching to Orijen as I live in Alberta and Morinville is about an hour drive from my house. I have been doing a lot of research lately on trying to find a top notch food for my 2 cats. Although I suppose probably still better than Hill's which is what I have been feeding my cats for the last couple years. I was feeding them Nutro/Simply Nourish before that and thought Hill's was an upgrade. Unfortunately in the past I have had them on an all dry diet and trying to switch them to eating more wet food has been very challenging. The 2 of them combined have still never finished off a small can of wet food in one sitting. I have reduced the amount of dry I leave out and keep trying more wet foods, seems to be getting better but very very slowly. I don't know if I'll ever be able to get them off dry completely but hopefully I can get them on a good balance of both. I did notice that there is a Global Pet Food store not too far maybe I will see if I can get some Essence and see if they like that.

    • @jennie9

I got one of my cats when she was 12 and she'd only ever been fed kibble. I started transitioning her to wet food but even after 8 years, she doesn't eat enough of it to maintain a healthy weight. I found that I was able to slowly replace her kibble with freeze-dried raw food if it was small enough. I guess the pieces are close enough to kibble in her mind to be an adequate substitute. I still have to be careful, though, because given a choice, she'll eat the freeze-dried raw and mostly ignore the wet. It's difficult to change those ingrained preferences.

I've already made the switch. After much research, I have switched to Zignature. Fromm's was another viable choice although it can be difficult to find. I settled on Zignature based on the contents of the kibble, a history void of recalls, a wide variety of protein sources, and what appears to quality ingredients. The primary selling point of Fromms is that it remains a family owned business who manufactures their own pet food with a focus on quality control.

Well done video. Everyone should take a look and understand these issues! My first dog ended up getting very sick and dying due to food related allergies. I didn't know any better then. Because of the experience, have done the level of research and learning that you covered in this video. It's shocking how little pet owners realize what's in their pet food, the potential impacts of small brands being acquired by large listed companies (or the consequences post listing their company on the stock market), and that dog food allergies are real, but don't necessarily carry over human fads to your dogs/pets (gluten free, plant based, keto, paleo, grain free, etc). It's not like for like, esp since you can't track the origin of the inputs... which is another rabbit hole...

My cat was on the original cat and kitten flavor. First year his coat looked magnificent. Couldn't be happier. Then gradually his coat started looking dull and patchy. He got lethargic and laid around. I did some research on Orijen to see if something had happened and yes it had. They opened a plant in Kentucky and the cat food was coming from that plant. Two things: make sure it is from the factory in canada always. The one from USA has extreme levels of industrial materials in it. Lubricants, machine coating and others according to a few reports. Especially for the cat version as America have better laws for dogs.
2nd being it's protein rich. So you might have to add one or two smallers meals during your pet accustoming to it.
I've been buying orijen and arcana for my cats as they seem to be more energetic eating those compared to other brands I tried
It doesn't do much for hairballs though. And yes cats vomit every once in a while. Dogs as well as they eat grass.
At least until recently as I had been looking into why all stores are empty. Guess this is why. Only remaining brand out there made to mimic a cat's natural diet, like mice and birds with high protein, low fats, and near zero plant content is ziwi peaks. But It's hard to get your hands on for an affordable price. Time for a new round down the rabbit hole on pet foods...

Iams, eukanuba and others aren't good at all despite their reputation. If malnutrition wasn't something that takes years to show symptoms they wouldn't exist. They're all owned and licensed by the same owner and megacorp, which isn't under any regulations beyond 《as long as a pet doesn't die within 24h of consumption, anything goes》. USA is notorious for poison ladened factories and sourcing from fields sprayed with materials banned for human consumption ever since we first opened our eyes for cancerous substances. It also has no limit on salt values except for lethal, and they're not even required to notify about sugars they put in to have a pet like theirs better. Eukanuba won a taste test in norway for example it was found to have 6times the amount of sugar as it's 2nd place competitor.

I was shocked to hear about this news, and I actually went looking to see if you’d made a video on it. It’s good to see you and I are of one mind. Getting rid of the competition at all costs even if means lying and cheating allegedly. The Dilated CardioMyopathy "epidemic" only involved around 514 dogs so hardly an epidemic. Champion, with its grain free, more natural ingredients was outpacing many of the big, US companies.
Allegedly start a rumor on the web, gather some evidence of DCM of dogs eating Champion and exaggerate that in a propaganda spin.... Either devalue the competition into the ground or devalue the competition, buy at a bargain price and continue the label so as to have those millions of customers that because loyal to the original product. Meanwhile, slowly cheapen all the ingredients to increase the bottom line. All sinister, all common practice, all allegedly.

I run a Natural pet supply company in the U.K and was shocked to hear this news, we have a really good relationship with these guys, and it is such a shame that this has happened. We mostly stock raw food, but prided ourselves on only stocking a few quality dried foods - Orijen, Akana, Carvilove, Eden and Tribal. Our sales guy actually paid us a visit last week to discuss the changes, and he was adamant that the quality would not change. Personally i think it probably will, they will more than likely forget us small independant suppliers and fill up the likes of pets at home (Biggest chain of pet stores in the U.K) which do not currently stock this brand, they will offer in store discounts, kill the independents, then look at making savings on product- i.e. cheaper ingredients. I hope this is not the case, but i feel saddened by this news and live in hope. It's not really a massive deal for us, as 90-95 % of our sales are raw food, but raw feeding is not for everyone, and indeed not for every dog, and we liked having a quality alternative of which Orijen and Acana was amongst the best out there.

Too bad I cannot attach photos of the two packaging here. I will definitely switch to something more trustworthy now. I used Acana because my Shar Pei girl (as I learned Shar Pei don’t do well with very high protein) could not digest well Orijen Chicken when she was a puppy. She really liked Acana before. We recently ordered Orijen and acana for out car and dog from Petco. The "same day" delivery came a week late, and when our cat would eat Acana, she would throw it up every time. Her stomach didn't even digest the food. Our dog has also had diarrhea the past couple of days as well. And we've noticed his behavior becoming more aggressive. These both started happening once we started giving them the wet food. We have been feeding them champion brand for a while, and this has NEVER happened before. Its very strange that our pets start feeling sick after Mars acquired the brand. We noticed that the cans were packaged in the Kentucky plant. We'll be returning the cans to Petco, and we're not sure how to go about contacting Champion about this. Recall??

My wife and I just opened an independent shop last year in December in Canada and never brought in Acana or Orijen as our initial distributor doesn't carry it. Hearing all this new news about the Mars company makes me glad we never went into it as we currently focus on having only 8 brands (although we are probably dropping one for lack of interest) with all of them being Canadian brands except for the one we may be dropping (which is US based). With a smaller selection we can focus on knowing everything about them and being able to explain the benefits of each instead of not knowing anything about any of them like the Pet Smarts and other larger retail stores.
What we love is being able to give people information on each of the foods and allowing their own budget or views shape what exactly they want to feed their pet as even though we like making money, I'm not here to force products down peoples throats.
So far all of the brands do pretty well with some standouts like Boreal, Valens and Canisource being in our top 3.
We do get people who are irritated that we don't carry the big box store stuff like Pedigree, Hills Science, Purina, Blue Buffalo and now Acana and Orijen but I would rather promote healthy pet nutrition than sell out and have the mainstream commercialized foods which is unfortunately what Acana and Orijen are about to become.
