- When looking at a pet food ingredient panel, do you know what is actually included in the word "byproduct"? Is it nutritious organs like the kidney and liver or low-quality horns and hair?

Yes! People often wonder WHY I am so against "meat byproduct" or "poultry byproduct"... until I tell them why I'm so against it. It's a lack of transparency to me. I want to see the specific organs listed!
Yes! Please do a meat meals video! I’m super interested in that😆
Yes meat meals I’m at a loss whether it’s good bad or inbetween!
@@tjmds2009Thank God , my dog is always well , and better and better. I discovered miraculous drops that gave him health , strength , focus and vitality. Want to know how ?
Yes please, I’d like to see this
Has this video been done?
Thank you! I think everyone who has an ethic of care and respect for animals we live with, and have taken on the responsibility of caring for, are interested in and can benefit from being educated about this! 😻
So Excited for this video 💯
Thank you!! I appreciate people like you that let us know what's really going on!! Learned a lot
I saw a tiktok where a truck was carrying pork by products it was spilling out of the truck and doesn't look refridgerated
I absolutely luv your deep discussion techy videos !!
Can you please do a review on Dr Marty's raw dog food. Love your channel.
Hey, I love your videos! And, please do more of these types of videos.
I really appreciate these deep dives that you do and all of the time that you put into them. Not only am I learning how I can make better decisions for my four legged babies I’m learning something new. This was a great video!
Thank you for the video! Very helpful!!
I found out about the book: Dead Pets Don't Lie. I just saw an interview with Joe Ardis & Donna Howell who wrote it, and they explained that if the pet food nutritional label says: "byproduct" or meat meal, bone meal, then the pet food is made from our pets that had diseases that were taken to the Pet shelter but not adopted, or the Vet who euthanize the animals. They then sell our dead animals to an Animal Rendering Prosessing Plants! They also use expired meat from grocery stories, roadkill with maggots, etc.
I just threw out my cat's Meow Mix and Friskies.
I fed her a Mahi Mahi and albacore, and she loved it, so now I need to buy some chicken and organ meat.
Thank you, as always, for sharing your wealth of knowledge with us! I am just a dog walker/pet sitter and many of my customers ask me about stuff like this, especially when they've tried different types of foods or food recommended by vets and they all have the same exact ingredients! Its frustrating to say the least. So I am able to pass on this info to them, recommend your channel & help to make their pets lives' better with clear, whole ingredients!
Just what I was looking for, thank you for this informative video. I appreciate your knowledge and your time. Byproducts got me confused about if is it good or bad, even when I translated the word into my native language,Arabic, and the meaning of it, I got more confused and got the impression that byproducts is something good in the front but hides bad things behind it so I decided to avoid any food with byproducts in its label for my cats! and this video made it clear to me. I can’t wait to watch a meat meal video, please do that for us. Tons of thanks!
Yay a new video! I'm really curious to know your stance on feeding puppies a food labeled for puppies vs all ages. Thanks for the good content!
Taylor, i just did a video addressing All Life Stage foods. the quick easy answer is...any food listed as All life Stages by law must provide all the nutrition for a growing puppy. so yes, they are puppy foods! the Pet Food Puzzle Guy
@@PetFoodPuzzleGuyThank God , my dog is always well , and better and better. I discovered miraculous drops that gave him health , strength , focus and vitality. Want to know how ?
Thank you for your expertise……this can be a very confusing food decision choice…..we appreciate your knowledge…..I must listen again…..as I want to make good choices for my loves.
Thanks for the info.
Thank you. very very good information. really appreciate it
I appreciate all the work you put into these informative videos. Have you looked at or ranked Sams club Salmon and Pea dog food?
This is so interesting! I'm gonna try find how the labelling works in my country
This was awesome! Can you teach us what chicken and chicken meal is and what is best? I am confused on that!
If you could do a review of Walmarts "Pure balance" dog food I would greatly appreciate it.
For the price point the ingredients list looks pretty good. Is it a decent food for those of us on a smaller budget that want the best for our pups? Or is there something I am not aware of in the list/sourcing? Or is there a better option at the price point?
I love your content so much. My gf and I went through a ton of your videos and learned more about how to incorporate raw for our one year old Cavalier. I was wondering if you could educate us about tick and flea medication. We have heard horrible things about how they can cause seizures among other issues, and our girl does have sensitive skin, so it’s something we worry about. Do you know if any options/ products that are effective but less harmful? Thanks again
Great explanations on by products and by products meal, thank you! I avoid any by-products, even named, just so there's no doubt in my mind about what our dogs and cats are eating
.
When I worked at an animal welfare agency years ago, I was shocked to learn that the euthanized animals were picked up by a pet food company (whose name would be familiar to everyone). No wonder they had recalls for traces of the euthanization medication in their pet food products. Not to mention cannibalization. Some companies will do anything to make $$.
That’s disgusting 🤮 in glad you mentioned this and i would ask for the companies name but i guess there’s a reason why you didn’t mention it.

Also, could you review Visionary pet foods' beef kibble! I would really appreciate it
Please do explain meals🙏🏼😅 great video as always
Would love a video about meat meals… like in First Mate. It was recommended by a couple local pet stores but I was Leary bcuz the first ingredient is meat meal and I thought that wasn’t a good ingredient choice. 🤷🏻♀️
Please do a chicken meal or meals in general video!
Would love to see your review on these kibble: Wellness Core Digestive Health Chicken, Halo Elevate Lamb, and Regal Pastureland Lamb. Thanks
Hi!
I was wondering if at some point you could rank UK based dog foods? I’m struggling to find a good kibble for my dog and a lot of the good foods from your videos cost too much due to shipping.
This seems important if your cat has allergies, if your pet doesn't have allergies then there isn't anything wrong about byproducts, your only hangup seems to be not knowing the specific animal, but again if the pet doesn't actually have any allergies then there should not be a problem. Our pets aren't so finicky when they are considering pork liver or chicken liver, they aren't thinking about Haram food.
Just curious, what is your view on insect protein? My rescue boys love Jiminys. Its one of the only foods everyone can eat with no isse due to tons of meat protein allergies. I do supplement with fish and fish skins for the 2 who can have those. Also love Honest Kitchen Veggie & Fish mixes.
Also, a vet made video about new pet food recall with issues like rodents, heat, rendered meat, and salmonela. So, major pet food brands are tangled up in serious health issues. Given how much money big pet food companies are making, guessing it's all about the money. $$$$$ when pet food companies are making billions.
Any dog food company that uses by product correctly, will label the ingredients individually. By product is an umbrella term, used to hide things. Such as "Poultry", and "Animal".
Hello could you please give your opinion on the bounce and Bella dry foods?? 😊😊
Hi hi again. Wanted to know your take on horizon dog food, it's based out of Canada and seems pretty great for the price. Just want the best for my dogs
Can you please answer a quick question for me? I consult of pet nutrition daily at my job, I’m not certified nor have I taken classes, I’ve just had lots of training.
Do you think I’m legally safe in doing personal consultations for pet nutrition outside of work?
How do you feel about mixing kibble, canned and raw food as diets. For puppies and adults large breed.
Do you feel pure balance chicken and rice is a good dog kibble??
Also thank you!
Hi!! I have a pet sitting business and only after my personal dog was diagnosed with cancer did I decide to research pet nutrition. I noticed all of my clients’ pets were dying from cancer, or liver and/or kidney disease.
Some parents are telling me that their dogs have to eat a low protein high carb diet because their pet has liver or kidney disease. I believe it’s the quality of the kibble they fed their dogs before they got sick.
What research do you have on this??
i have a 7 year old doberman. shell be 8 years old this year shes been used for breeding from the old owner i got her from shes had multiple litters. anyway she came to me on perina pro plan. what food would you suggest? i was thinking about starting her on a senior hip an joint formula
Can you review h-e-b heritage ranch dog food.
I have questions about freeze dried and dehydrated treats that include bone. Such as the dehydrated chicken feet. I'm sorry, but I just don't see how those are safe. I think that if you dehydrate or freeze dry something the bone is going to act more like a cooked bone. I will not feed these to my animals. I feed them raw meaty bones, but I will not feed the free strider of the dehydrated.
Byproducts in pet foods scare me almost as much as McDonald’s McRib sandwiches.
Hello. When it says "fresh Chicken 50 per cent" and "dehydrated Chicken 25 per cent" this is not only muscle meat right? Also, when it says "protein poultry" what does that mean?
Heard from someone "rendered meat" can legally include "meat" from animal shelters or rescues...if you know what I mean. Wonder if horses might be "rendered meat" too?
It all depends on how it is labeled. "Beef by-product meal" for example must be all beef "except what is allowed in best manufacturing practices" whereas "animal by-product meal" can be a mix of anything and just about everything
What's in poultry by product meal ? My 7 week old boxer mother is allergic to chicken wheat I feed her wholesomefoods whitefish.
Now that I e started following you I'm learning a lot and a it's very educational but concerning bc dog food fr my female adult boxer are limited now are very limited
AAFCO defines poultry byproduct meal as rendered parts of the carcass of slaughtered poultry (chicken, turkey, fowl) and can include necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines
Just tell me about one thing if i start giving farmina grain to my dog who is obese will she Loos weight 🤨
What do you think about Open farm?
I’m also wondering about the Opem Farm brand because some of their kibbles says it contains “meal”.
Im feeding my puppy bully max i wanted to know if good enough
please make that meat meals video.
In theory, by products can/should be better. They technically replicate a natural diet. Being a mix match of a "whole prey" including organ meat. However, theory and reality, rarely meet. In reality, by products are at least 10% meat, 90% a mystery. Whatever the company can get their hands on, for the cheapest prices, while staying in the ( protein minimum-maximum ) guidelines. Actual meat, or deboned meat ( as blue buffalo likes to call it ) in theory should also be better then meal. However, what is meat meal, vs meat, in regards to dog food? Well, they are both dehydrated meat, turned to powder. So what is the difference? The difference is, if it is labelled meal, the company straight up ordered and received, already dehydrated powdered meat. If it is labeled meat, or deboned meat, fresh meat. The company ordered and received meat. And dehydrated it themselves. So which is better? Are you ready for this? MEAL! Meal is actually better to see in your kibble ingredients. Because when it is straight meat, it gets its placement on the ingredient panel, based on weight, BEFORE dehydration! While, if they get meal, it gets its placement based on already dehydrated meat. So, if it says meat, vs meal. The food containing meal, will have MORE meat based protein, then if it says meat.
Why does anyone need approval from vet about feeding quality food? They don't get any training in nutrition , except for big pet food brand in-house seminar, and alternative information Seems better to learn and offer pets good quality food without comment, and then one would rarely ever need a vet.
Hi I am from TAMILNADU India... I am constructing a dog food pellet manufacturing unit which is purely made only from dehydrated sardine and anchovies as protein source. Pure cod liver oil for fat. No soya, no soya oil, gluten free, grain free. This will be an ancient Indian carnivorous herbal diet which will have a lot of herbs like withania somnifera, liquorice, ocimum tenuilferum, turmeric etc. Rosemary extract as preservative. Along with this we also add 18 types of vitamins and minerals sourced from natural sources. The product will be launched soon and if possible I'll send a sample to our trainer if she permits. I am a dog lover and grew along with dogs...
Dogs can't eat too much fish. Neither can cats. Sounds like the food you were thinking about would be way too much fish.
@@nogames8982 hi brother. Thanks for your reply. Fish is used as protein source alone. Other than that there are 18 types of vitamins and minerals added to the kibble. Everything is naturally sourced ans plant based. Lemme clear you once again. Fish is used as source of protein which is considered one of the premium proteins which is enriched with EHA and DHA.
@@moneytree1319 fish is good for dogs and cats. However, it's not good for them to eat a lot of it. If somebody was to feed their dog or cat only food as fish is the protein that could cause some serious issues over time. Dogs and cats need variety. So I'm glad that you're going to make a good food but just know that dogs or cats can't live on fish alone.
@@nogames8982 of course I agree to your feed back brother. We have variety of products in which we will be having fresh dehydrated chicken as protein as well. The core theme of my company is WE will never ever add any byproducts or any meal powder or soya like what other pet food manufacturers use. If I mention chicken in description it will have only dehydrated chicken only. If I mention fish it will be pure fish and no by products... Once again I would like to confirm we use fish/chicken as protein source and no byproducts. Consumers will have option to swap between both. Like this time if they buy fish based product next time they will have an option to buy chicken based kibble. It purely depends on dogs taste buds
Are you aware of the (4) D's?
One thinks that slaughtered means the animal was alive and reasonably healthy when they arrive at the rendering facility. In fact many, many animals have previously expired on a farm and within 48 hours hauled away "then" slaughtered.
If you arent aware of the (4) D's let me know via a response and I will gladly fill in the blanks.
Let me say I was taken aback when I learned what these little rules of thumb mean for pet food manufacturers, the people and our critters.
This is all American rules, eh? -a Canadian who finds this video very interesting but isn't sure it is will actually be helpful for me
From what I understand, generally speaking, the Canadian "FDA" has even better guidelines for dog (and human) food than the USA. I imagine if you source food made in Canada it's even better. Otherwise, yes these American rules for foods made in the USA will pertain to you if you choose them.
I'm not an expert on the topic, just a good listener with opinions/the ability to think for myself. I could be wrong.
All pet food are crap.
