My notetaking system has two parts: 1. Social Media: I wrote down anything useful, surprised me or entertaining on social media, and gathered instant feedback from my readers and put it together into an article later on. 2. Notebook: I love the index note system David mentioned before, and I add notes during my fixed working hours with specific topics in my mind.
Hey David, I love this video man. Your analogy of "slow cooking" his ideas is perfect. Also, the editing of this video is wow. I felt like was watching something from vice or netflix. Aaaannnd, the perspective on note taking, then reviewing them is very powerful. Probably an area that I could improve on.
I'm a huge fan of drawing a quick portrait to help me remember the person I am gathering notes about / from. This always helps humanize and give life to the information I am capturing. I am an Apple Notes fiend for calls, but when I have the time, I like to take in Calls, Keynotes, and Workshops through a visual format I call "Illuminated Notes."
This reminds me of Woody Allen's idea drawer. The key is to write everything down, no matter how small. We never know when one of those scraps will be useful, either as a starter, or reinvented as a vital part of something else.
Thanks David. I think another improtant thing to talk is the note mangement- I often write notes all around since many years ago and cannot find where they are, lol.
I haven't started a note-taking process yet. But have been taking notes in a substack. Then using notions for Stand-up ideas or theme notes. Video is helpful thank you. 4 types are helpful. Inspiring: Anything that is going to get you excited when you see it. Useful: Anything which could be a building block/idea to share. Easily lost: something you might lose in the future. Personal: unique and hard won knowledge.
Thanks for these amazing tips. Your video has given me very useful tips for being more intentional and focused with my writing. For many years I never considered myself a writer. I constantly told myself that I sucked at it. Now I am embracing the process and thrill of writing. What changed for me was realizing the plethora of journals and articles I have written over the past 10 years. I have used these personal experiences to empower others. And will continue to do so. Thanks again.
I take notes in my journal in the morning at first asking three major reflection questions. 1. What am I worried about? 2. What am I hoping for in the future? 3. How do I feel? After Answering, I think about my Highlight to-do for the day, while bullet out my schedule. I've been wanting to pick up the craft of answering specific questions on Quora and sharing my story that way. I also want to practice writing Morning Pages on Notion. I'm an average 40-60 wpm typer. Would like to be faster, any suggestions? Also are there any suggestions on how to improve my writing craft?
Some of my best songs have come from late night song writing sessions where i have the mic recording and just forget about them. Later I’ll come back to these song ideas and am amazed by what i was able to do. Thanks for the video! Extremely inspiring.
the difference is, students arent writing down ideas, they're writing down information they need to learn for their exam that isn't useful to them after that exam, which is why they throw those notes away after
Yeah the amount of context to actually world build that I was taught in college is laughable. I’m sure there are better programs but I was extremely dissatisfied. I’m more of a “fact” than a “truth” guy. But still, left academia pretty empty handed of anything close to a polymathic perspective on humanitas
I think about alot of situations and quotes someone might of said and I write that quote down and I just go on a go on and then I can't stop writing I fill up the whole page with notes and like you mentioned it helps you for future writing projects because you dont have to think because u already made notes weeks prior
Brilliant man thank you for putting this out there! I indeed did take notes and totally agree with you everyone could do well with taking the everyday and finding something inspirational out of it!
Good vid - interesting that the principles of compounding keep cropping up. Doing the right thing over a long period accrues serious competitive advantage
Great video David. Thanks. I started using Roam Research but it's been a bit of a slog. Would you recommend any particular note taking apps or systems?
This is a fantastic video, David. Thank you for sharing this. I use Obsidian to capture ideas and notes. So far so good. The graph view of Obsidian inspires me to keep on writing notes and connect them with the related notes. It's bliss.
I have a lots of google doc I use for note taking from different creators whose work I’m fascinated by. Like Austin Kleon, Perrell, Seth Godin, Laura Belgray. Different ones for different things. There’s even where I store Perrell’s tweets to steal and remix in the future. But here’s one of them; docs.google.com/document/d/1-2Sz4R4HxTGOJTC9hVxVD3aZVScFX2vljD19SH0W1tc/edit If you love it let me know.
Listen to podcasts and audiobooks, make videos, have conversations, have a podcast, maybe sketch ideas out Reading and writing is awesome imo but you can bypass it if you want nowadays
@@exoneuromancer1672 yeah, I consume mainly video and also create videos. I have a system that works for me, I am just curious what you think a second brain would look like for more video or audio content...
Hey @David Perell isn't it a contradiction that you first say to make notes of everything and then at 13:03 you recommend to only make notes of 5% of what you consume ? What I am getting wrong ?
I didn't take a note while watching your video, because I think, I will feel distracted (thus I feel guilty if I miss a point from your video). How can I take a note while watching, and not feel distracted?
I only wish Steve Jobs was further ahead of me in life and then I might have been much more productive by now. What I do now is rely on my girlfriend Siri to spontaneously access my Apple Reminders… where I can quickly create ‘notes’ of whatever thought popped in my head. This happens while driving, walking (with the aid of my AirPods), and especially when I’m trying to go to sleep for the night. I’ll say ‘Hey Siri… create Reminder’. I could go on but at that point I usually wait to hear a confirmation that Siri isn’t mad at me and is indeed listening. Once Siri responds then it’s time a brief tussle with my stumbling lips and I spit on out whatever gem of wisdom I’ve been blessed to grab out of the air. It’s not for ‘composition’ but that’s usually a longer-form perculation that processes the kernels I’ve gathered in my Reminders. It is then a huge help that I’ve been able to preserve these kernels. I’m sure there’s lot’s of other ways/tools to do this same thing. :)

You are going to be great

This is so well made. Highly inspiring and informative.
Thank you!
truly well done and very substantial content! Subscribed!
I still remember the exact place I was at when I heard “DNA.” for the first time - never had chills like that from another song 🔥🐐

Hey Adam! Stoked to see you randomly in the comments of this video:) I hope all is well!!

Superb share with plenty of real simple tips and process. Thank you

Amazing video! I don't regret subbing and getting the newsletter
This is really good, David. Keep it up.
Wow this is the best video's I have seen thank you

Great video! Would love if you discussed how you take notes. What apps do you use, what your notes look like, etc.

Nice video. what editing tool do you use and also for the animation?

Very well made. Great content. More Kendrick analysis please
Great video David. Thanks. I started using Roam Research but it's been a bit of a slog. Would you recommend any particular note taking apps or systems?
Note taking is a skill that I've been wanting to improve. I take so many notes, but I think only 20% of them see the light of day
Really well made! Your videos are getting better and better! Surprisingly great!
This is a fantastic video, David. Thank you for sharing this. I use Obsidian to capture ideas and notes. So far so good. The graph view of Obsidian inspires me to keep on writing notes and connect them with the related notes. It's bliss.
DAMN! That was good, David.
Damn! who is the video editor?
Keep working. Very soon you will be one the best and most viewed channels
Wow, thank you!
Workflowy is kinda nice tool for this.

I take notes all the time when I'm thinking about my day
This video is fucking awesome!! David you are awesome!! I'm also in Austin, maybe one of these days we can play tennis or something! 💪🏾
Thank you!!
Came here for rap, left here ready for my last month of AP U.S. History
Great video and lots of useful things I know I act on but what if you don't like writing or reading?
Listen to podcasts and audiobooks, make videos, have conversations, have a podcast, maybe sketch ideas out

Tpab is even greater in terms of ideas, introspection, experiences, talks with god, and complex rhymes.
Good job

What I am getting wrong ?
I'd like to believe it's more of a personal choice and doing what works best for you!
i know you may use many methods for notetaking but what is your favorite preference? do you prefer typing your notes or writing on paper?
can somebody show their examples? i dont know where to start
I didn't take a note while watching your video, because I think, I will feel distracted (thus I feel guilty if I miss a point from your video). How can I take a note while watching, and not feel distracted?
You can pause the video. Take the note. Then continue watching. That's not possible in the classroom, but you can do it on RUclips. I hope it helps.

Siri does Not experience emotions, can not get mad
It isn't note-taking alone. What you do after note-taking is the key. Don't break the streak.
Even biggie said, "relax and take notes."
Key takeaway @ 12:18
Where's my 95% Gang at?
In last you said right here
There's no video over there
Killer David
Hey, I'm 95% ahead of most people!
Not Like Us
A lot of his notes come from joe budden podcast, Twitter and from other rappers
