  • “One of the things that’s happened to me over the years is rapping gets harder but rhyming gets easier, if that makes any sense… by the time it’s all said and done, ‘is this different than anything of ever said or done…? I’ve scribbled out many a rhyme on my pad and thought, ‘ah, I’ve already got something that’s like that - Eminem
"(I have) thousands (of unreleased songs). I done lost hard drives. Hard drives from ’05, ’06… we never got them back. Took it to San Francisco to get it fixed, never got fixed…
It’s a need to never be content or to be comfortable." --Kendrick Lamar

In these two quotes, we see two of the greatest rappers of all time - Eminem and Kendrick Lamar - discuss the science of learning how to write better lyrics.
Throughout this analysis, we’ll watch as Kendrick and Shady dive deep into their respective writing processes, and then mirror those direct quotes from the rappers themselves with information about:
How To Come Up With Lyrics
How To Destroy Writer’s Block As An Artist
How To Write More Authentic Lyrics
But let’s begin by honing in on the first lesson we can pull from learning how to write better lyrics, using the Kendrick Lamar and Eminem Method:
Experiment With Your Lyrics Like A Scientist
“I’ve made a lot of songs. When I think back about how many songs I’ve actually made… I don’t know how many I’ve made but I’ve made a lot of songs… and I make a lot of songs for each album.
But I always try to approach each song slightly different. And even if I can’t - ‘Okay I got a song that was kind of maybe like this ten years ago - let me put a little twist on it” -- Eminem Interview
“I could talk about anything - and this is the challenge for me - being able to talk about anything and make it connect to the listener…
Where the listener can either feel like you or understand you or you have just a deeper connection through the music.
Like, talking to a little kid and making that represent something and making that feel like something. Or saying the most brutal harsh things on record where society might not want to hear it. - Kendrick Lamar Interview
To the outside fan or future superstar who has just started writing lyrics, it would appear like artists such as Marshall and Kendrick simply…
Pull bars out of thin air like a magician with no method to the madness.
Although perhaps we all wish creating better lyrics could be so mystical, the truth of the matter is a better comparison for a lyricist pushing themselves into a new creative realm is that of a scientist, yes…
Lyricists are closer to scientists than magicians
This is because, much like a seasoned scientist trying to test their data and establish a new theory…
After you have been writing lyrics for literally decades, filling up hard drives like Kendrick or having to compete with your 22-year old self at age 50 like Eminem…
    You reach a point where:
You Need To Have “Experimental” Mindset
You’re no longer competing with “other artists” or pushing to come up with lyrics just to become proficient in music like your idols… you’re now competing with yourself.
Therefore, the very first step to learning how to write better lyrics like Kendrick Lamar and Eminem is shifting your lyrical content into a constant “experimentation mode”, and then expanding on what you find.
As someone who has coached rappers here, RUclips’s most subscribed channel on learning how to rap, and perhaps more importantly traveled to over 15 countries as a professionally paid rap artist…
Let me humbly offer one quick method in order to implement your new experiment-and-expand mindset:
Start Doing “Don’t Leave ’Til It’s Done” Sessions

COMMENT: Do you write lyrics with a notebook, on your phone, or simply “think” your lyrics like Lil’ Wayne and Jay-Z?

  • @d.michael372

What helps me write is the detailed approach. Let’s say the subject is an apple. Verse one can strictly be about the stem, verse 2 the skin and verse 3 the core. Now you have a full song because you stuck to each detail of an apple. This technique keeps you from veering away from the topic. I find the studio the worst place to write lyrics because of how closed in it feels. I get my inspiration from just being outside doing everyday things. Once I’ve finished my lyrics, then I go to the studio to only record. The studio is not the place to be thinking about what you want to write. Use your studio $ wisely!

Now I write songs without a problem, because I taught myself to believe!! It you make yourself believe you can’t do something, you’ll spend the rest of your life believing it’s true when it’s not. PUSH YOURSELF, even when your own brain won’t believe in you. You got this!

Great video, my take away is that anyone can honestly learn how to write music , they just gotta be in touch with themselves in one way or another to know what they want put out or say to the world. Maybe it’s different for you than it is for me . Just gotta find a process that suits you even if it has to come through trial and error

I've always been a writer being that It was poetry that got me rapping on a personal level. It's still a thought process involved as I write what I'm thinking but never been a from off the brain rapper to its definition. I got a lot of practice to be a freestyle rapper. I started off with paper as many have but I use the song keeper app.

  • @4everyonebutyou

(Sry for text wall) So I’ve been rapping since I was 16 (22 now) and when I started I was pretty much strictly writing because I didn’t really know what I was doing I just knew you had to write something to rap if you can’t go off the top.
Over time you get comfortable and some may get more comfortable than others and find the flow/style that really works for them while at the same time having that experimental mindset like said in this video , it will give you that versatility to rap in different voices ,styles , genres even.
Now after making hundreds of songs I just hear a beat and every time I can just go off the top and destroy that shit . It’s taken years of dedication but I noticed it’s just like acting in a sense , you can’t tell a good actor is acting really because he’s playing the character so well. If you play the character of yourself better and better every time you make a song it’s just like having a conversation you don’t necessarily have to try so much like em said the rhyming gets easier but rapping gets harder. The actual technical ability to rap is much more difficult imo than writing good bars, that’s the thing that you just have to practice over and over again until it becomes fluent and like muscle memory . To sum it up , it’ll get easier but don’t think you can just ride the same flow every song and expect to get better that way, same goes with lyrics you gotta push yourself to write story’s , stupid shit sometimes for fun, good metaphors , double entendres, alliteration , all of that stuff is needed if you really want to be taken seriously but don’t forget to have fun. it seems like it won’t be but if you really love music the work never feels like work

Here's something I came up with...
Tower of Babel and an apple; wisdom bedazzled// Like Heaven untraveled, that's your life for an example// So if you want to battle, you'll have to go through an eye of a needle with a camel; the dragon that chya cant handle, your left behind and dismantled, going upstream without a paddle, life sucks; you have no dick for a girl to straddle, your nothing but dirt and gravel to trample upon as the world travels// My grace is sufficient,// wish you weren't so fragile, you're bound by sin and shackled on the pedestal in the chapel, nothing but a pharisee to tackle// I'm the Holy of Holies in this tabernacle, trapping souls in little gel capsules, to shine on my mantle, you can never put the flame out on this candle, Messianic ramble, slaughtering of lambs to be raffled// lyrical blades, ancient of days, blank kicks like Guile to the brain donkey kong country where you go insane, and I play you like a video game, gotta to be born again to step to my fame, treat you with the mark of Cain for saying your hard in the paint to the public domain such an antichrist when your rap'pin in vain, I could go on and on for days and days putting you to shame now the ball in your court for the rap game
