I reckon this piece is more like a work of art in wood than a book shelf or a cabinet. Maybe someone with a very expensive watch collection would want it to display them in this. The added lights would make it work well. Or possibly some ridiculously expensive ancient artifacts; Chinese rice bowls that cost a couple of million pounds each displayed individually on the shelves. I just hope whoever buys it treats it with the respect it deserves. Great vid. Big thumbs up. 🙂🙂🙂
Coffee table, bookshelf, TV stand, whatever, it should be the centerpiece of anything, anywhere. It's a thing of beauty.

I like the backing. He could make it as one piece, and use anything from fabric to carbon fiber for different looks. The lighting was a nice touch.
If there's one thing I love about these videos is the lack of perfection. Nothing feels more discouraging when getting back into something like woodworking and everyone you watch seems to just get everything perfect the first time. I love that you cover your process of "well that isn't working, what now?"

@@BlacktailStudiohi from Australia mate 😊. 2 things if I may... 1. Have you seen Australian Squiggly Gum, caused by a larvae burrowing through the under bark? I think you might like it, and we have tonnes of it being cleared weakly on our island. 2. Make a sanding pad edge on (so the paper is on a template edge/banded edge, then fit that in a reciprocating saw....sand the curve evenly? I used it in custom metal fabrication and head porting jobs.

Working with UV almost every day, I have two recommendations; 1) Wear UV blocking glasses. Even short exposure can lead to uncomfortable itchy eyes and other transient (but not permanent) discomforts 2) Determine the wavelength (in nm) of the curing light. Odds are, there is a cheaper alternative that's marketed as germicidal or used for curing finishes in other fields (for example UV cured windshield chip repair, or UV cured 3d printing, perhaps germicidal UV, etc). The light you're using looks pretty lavender, which is closer to the far end of the UV spectrum
Most safety glasses block like 99% of UV-A and UV-B light I believe so you may not need to buy anything special.
3rd recommendation. Keep the light away from Monica Lewinsky’s dress.

Oh dear goodness! So way back in 2010 I went to a DoD police academy and like many others there I was both prior service and prior MP. One of my classmates was a recently retired Army CW3 CID agent. The subject came off classes we’d attended and CID attends a lot of the FBI classes. For his forensics the agents egged them into asking the instructor about “the dress” because she was the principal technician who had worked on it.
The long and short of it was that she could confirm that Wild Bill’s sample was on the dress, along with something like 4-6 OTHER donors whom had also been identified but she was not allowed to disclose.
So apparently it really was her party dress!

It's a book cabinet, it's also very beautiful, it reminds me of some of the furniture that was being produced in the1970s, please stop worrying what some people think of your creations, 99% of us who subscribe to your channel do so because we love your builds and your sense of humor, I always look forward to your next video, I always learn something new and am always blown away by how stunning the wood you use ends up looking.
I think worrying about what people think about your creations is a vital part of the process and frankly one of the only things you can depend on when making and sharing your ideas with others is opinions. Nothing wrong with opinions or even harsh words as long as you realize you don't have to take them to heart.

I've never been interested in or known a thing about woodworking, but the craftsmanship, editing, and humor of these videos, plus the wonderful narrative arc they always end up with are just amazing. I'm a lifelong woodworker. Had my own cabinet shop for twenty years. You and Izzy are my favorites. You don't mind showing the frustrations of woodworking as well as the satisfaction of incredible imagination. You've managed to do what most of we oldtimers wish we could have done, build things we WANT to build. Most of us spent a lifetime building boxes that become someone elses kitchens.
You asked for suggestions of what to do with the acrylic waterfall bent table. Well ... my suggestion is to hold an auction and donate the proceeds to Tunnels to Towers or some other non-profit helping our veterans. I think that might solve the issues you mentioned being concerned about what to do with it. No, I am not a VET. The draft ended the night before I was to report for active duty at the end of the Viet Nam war. I've always felt like someone had to take my place. So ... that's my suggestion. And...

Agree on credenza. Gotta say that the hammered blued steel backing is an excellent choice to contrast the walnut. It looks stellar in a kind of retro-futuristic way (think how the 60's saw the future).
It would look right at home in 2001: A Space Odyssey.
I think that you could've used a liquid instant patina on the copper sheets to make them that reddish-brown of old pipes and pennies. Just re-pound the copper with the bigger hammer. After all of this hand sanding you now have arms of steel.
Bookshelf or figurine collection display. I really like the addition of Scott to the channel. He’s great in his own right, I enjoy the verbal contributions that survive editing. I also love the more cheerful & social version of Cam panicking 😂 Edit: you should get a laser cutter because it will cut almost anything & I don’t see you limiting your creativity to wood anytime soon.

I'd say it's just a beautiful piece of art, its a looking shelf. I have fallen in love with your videos. I have always been interested in doing my own thing. I build tiny home conversion vans and the woodworking is limited, plus a lot of it is cut on the CNC. I look forward to watching more from you. Thanks!

This shelf unit is stunning! I watched the whole project over a few days. You actually got through that sanding ordeal!!! I’ve sanded a few things before and hated it. I don’t know how you managed to stay with it. Your design is very beautiful. Even though it has simple lines, it’s very complicated with all those pieces of wood and rounded angles. The shelf unit is smooth and so very elegant.
As someone who used to build custom cabinets and millwork for high end real-estate I gotta commend you on your work. Truly a beautiful piece of furniture there. As you learned it takes a certain mindset to do that kind of work full time. thanks for posting this vid, really enjoyed it.
It's really fun seeing Chris (Four Eyes Furniture) delve into epoxy tables and now you delve into more "traditional" woodworking stuff. It's great to see some of my favorite builders step outside their comfort zones.

I think the copper would have looked SUPER GOOD if instead of just doing bright bare metal, you'd burnished, oxidized, or tarnished it. It really just needed to be a little darker and have some variation in the colors. That being said I think it turned out extremely well. It's a very pretty piece, one that I would be happy to have in my home... if I had anywhere near enough money to be able to afford your pieces lmao. If I might make a suggestion: A matching floating enclosed bookshelf or record shelf that could go on the wall above it or nearby. Something with half the depth and height perhaps. I think that would look SUPERB.

Art display. With the lighting it’s wasted on a desk with books or supplies, but it highlights and makes any object more beautiful. This is gorgeous!

A tip for if you ever use copper again but dislike the color, use liver of sulfer. It instantly turns it a nice black shade and makes it look quite refined, especially if you add resin/shellac over it

That's what I was going to suggest. Use the larger hammer on the copper. Use LOS and buff back the highlights to let the warm copper come through.
Fuming copper in ammonia with a coating of salt and vinegar can produce a beautiful verdigris effect. I would imagine that hammered copper would make for quite an interesting background when sealed.

It's neither a bookshelf nor a cabinet, it's a bookcase.
A bookshelf has open ends (usually mounted on walls), while bookcases have closed off ends (the unit usually sits on the floor).
A cabinet has doors/shutters and sometimes drawers.
Other - this piece is not a book shelf although it could be. It isn't a whisky cabinet although it very easily could be. My point is, it is whatever you designate it to be. After serving as a wine display rack for 2 years you could remove the wine bottles and restock it with virtually anything. Therein lies its intrinsic value. A piece this beautiful will naturally repel any labels so call it whatever its purpose is at any given moment. You are right to feel proud of this wonderful creation. The lighting is like delicious icing on a cake. So nice!❤

I'd probably classify this as a cabinet but honestly it's a work of art first and foremost, and who cares what you wanna call it other than gorgeous. The combination of highly organic wooden aspects and the handworked metal effect are lovely, but the lights really elevate it to a new level, truly inspiring and amazing work.

I don’t really care if it’s called a cabinet, bookshelf, credenza or some other variations of the aforementioned. To me, that is a beautiful piece of artwork that could be purposed in multitude of ways by the lucky owner. I would proudly have it displayed in my home. The dark stained wood contrasts very well with the blued and hammered steel back panel, loved it! You outdid yourself, again!!! No pressure, but I look forward to more fabulous creations from you. it really is something huh. i was curious how much it is and its......$30000. i get it. it was 150 HOURS which comes to 200/hr which seems about right for an amazing furniture maker. the cost of materials, labor, etc. but i really wonder what kind of person is able to buy a cabinet/bookshelf/etc for 30k. i think my mom would love this. i have 30k.. however it would be not smart of me to buy something thats 30k lol
@@pvic6959 rather than focusing on the price, I would look more towards the value. Now and in the future. The market for furniture, hand-crafted with strong provenance is always buoyant. Also the high-end corporate and hospitality sector would always be buyers of such fine design and craftsmanship. In this sector you could add another zero to that price and it would still sell out faster than they could be made. (Not that I anticipate that this craftsman would be in any way interested in volume production).
You put in so much work building this TV cabinet. For me it looks like a TV cabinet. You can put a TV on top, DVD player, amplifier, and so on. I definitely would like to see more of you videos. Thanks for sharing.

Cabinet - bookshelves have straight sides so you don't lose space on the edges for tall books. Very good to see you going in a new direction here! I saw a few of the rectangular cut outs for the lights in various shots and I was rather confused right up until the end. Great work!

Bookshelf... and the reason is that while a cabinet might often have doors, and bookshelf almost never does... I have to say that this project is absolutely stunning--other worldly beautiful! I can't even begin to imagine how much work it was, but I'm quite sure your sense of satisfaction surpasses that! So impressed.
If you plan on using the UV cure finish more frequently you should probably buy some sort of protective UV blocking glasses that work for the UV wavelength emitted by the UV flashlight.
Or rub sunscreen in your eyes...

I'm a house carpenter. One time I couldn't get the skirting to match the existing stuff In a big old fancy house. Spent weeks routing and sanding to make the skirting boards. This was just another level of hard work. And the results were amazing. This channel is great. It has inspired me to fill my garage with native timber over the last couple of years for that "one day" project.

I haven't watched The Shining for quite some time so though I thought the Day segments and the music were a nod to that movie I wasn't sure until I saw that sanding still, really made me laugh. Superb job - lovely to watch you work.
A good way to remove excess glue is with a damp rag. Wet it , ring most of the water out, wipe the excess away. Wash the glue from the rag before it dries.
When you sand your corners, have you considered a felt backed sanding block?

I’d call it artist masterpiece. This piece came out gorgeous. If I owned it I would use it to display other types of art glass & figurines on. With the lights being in there it would help make the pieces look even more beautiful. I love the work you do & I’m glad you went out of your comfort zone & made this. This is a bookshelf that defies description and I love it. I agree that it is easily in the top three of anything I have seen you build. I put almost 40 hours in
making a segmented bowl for my wife, so for you to make this piece of art as quickly as you did is amazing.
Cabinet! In my opinion it has a Danish furniture vibe. It’s a very handsome piece and the hidden lights really make all that walnut pop! ❤ Well done!
I'm a gunsmith here and I'm taking high end woodworking to my stock work. But let's talk about the cold bluing real quick.
Personally I apply with a small brush because it's a generally ugly and patchy solution instead of a full refinishing using a slow rust or fast rust bluing.
Chemical bluing (cold) has some steps
First you should prep your material.
You should sand the material starting at 120 grit and working up to 280 for a matte, 320 for a medium shine, 400 for a slightly brighter shine, and going up to 1200 can give you a moderately reflective swiss shine (or swedish I always confuse the two lol) though this is better with slow rusting technique.
Next make sure you degass or do oil removal with acetone, I like to soak milsurp for around 4 hours after heating at about 320 for 45 min. But again this is more for bluing or cerakote. You would want to colder than 320 for applying but a warm temp should be acceptable.
Then apply with a sponge making sure it's lint free. (There are a lot more steps if you slow rust or fast rust)
Neutralize the process again lint free
Finally I like to set up shop towels put a small amount of motor oil (you were right about that). I then pour motor oil completely over the entire barrel/action I use a bin to collect the access. Then lay it over the shop towel, lightly coat the metal in the oil and I then wrap the metal up and tape the shop towels and leave at least overnight but on a high end product I can leave up to 72 hours.

A piece of art….. I would use it as a cabinet but add one item in each section. A minimalist look - not to take away from the piece itself. This piece is my absolute favorite. So original - your talent is just shining through this piece, Cam.

Okay, so woodwork really is something that I’m not good at so I really do appreciate the amount of effort that you’ve gone through to try and make this piece, because it’s totally different very unusual and absolutely stunning , I think it’s one of those pieces that would never look out of place anywhere that you put it , once again keep up the good work
