If you are looking for a hot hatch you cannot forget to look at the new Civic Type-R. Yes we know it's not quicker than the old one and it's got a hard ride but as someone who has owned it for the past two years I can tell you it's a cracking car for the price. The engine is as good as ever and the sound the exhaust makes is simply magical. It's a real head turner too.. which cannot be said for the GTI.
@1ns4ne1d10t Because of the regulations i mentioned. The FIA put up a rule, that stated that all engines have to be 4-cyl and 2-litre ones. On top of that, they put strict rules on how big turbos/how much boost etcetc. you can have. This made all cars develop approx. the same amount of bhp (300), wich made for a more competetive series.
Um.. TypeR excuse me my friend but the Edition 30 model is not all plastic, in fact the standard equipment is half leather which is what I chose. I'm talking about the seats half leather half cloth (all seats), steering wheel, handbrake, the DSG stick with its base, arm rest, door interior on the side behind the window switches do I need to keep going? Plus you can have it full leather but I saw no point spending more money on it, I'd rather go for Oettinger stage 2 instead, which I will. -->>
I can't understand what all the arguing is about. Every car has its flaw and these two are no exception, however, I've driven both and I can honestly say that both these cars are very good and if you own either, you are a lucky person.
@Nakke144 Why on earth do Ford use a 4 cylinder "TeamRS" duratec engine and not the 2.5T Volvo engine then? If they already have a rebuilt a 300Bhp 5 cylinder engine then what would be the need to use a 4 cylinder with 300Bhp? Last time I heard it was a Cosworth YB 200 engine that was a 4 cylinder in their rally races, no one mentions about the 2.0 duratec engine that was fettled by Ford...
I wouldn't call it explosive. Yes it's very strong from 3k but this is the problem. You get a kick and then it just pushes you onwards to 6k and then in typical turbo fashion it dips and I'm left wondering what happened. I felt disconnected from the car in some ways. The experience was much like a remaped A3 TDI which had 220bhp and lots of torque. (obviously the S3 being faster but still....) I tested the TT-S only because the dealer had them both waiting and suggested I try it.
Now, I prefer big engines but still, for only a 2 liter it's just a very good deal. Also, 0-100kmh (0-62mph) when driven on the S mode, ESP off and using launch control function it hits 5.8" . Note that, 6.6" is on D and without LC, ESP on. Those I tested numerous times with digital equipment that can't miss. Highest times I've done is like 6" and 6.1" - usually 5.9" and 6". Finally the difference of MT and DSG isn't just 0.2" but almost a whole second. Times were done on dry.
i was talking about just chipping a car when I said 265bhp of course you could get bigger power figures but if would cost a hell of a lot more than a 500 quid superchip.
Don't think you've even driven it then because the 07 Type R exhaust note is much better than the old one. Once it warms up the exhaust has a lovely low end and absolutely screams once you get it up into the red line. Like I say you don't like it doesn't mean it's shit. I'm giving in back in 2 weeks.... Sprint Blue Audi S3 turning up next week. Will be sad to see the R go but I've already got the S3 booked in for some upgrades in August.
@loopydoopi once a month up here in canada mostly in winter but still in summer try puttin fastfood trays under your rear wheels and pulling the e-brake most g's you'll eer experience
@getmeblad Well im glad you did your homework and still failed to realise that sitting in the ST is identical to sitting in an old Transit van like the ones we have at work. A RARB fitted to a VXR will also fix other issues on the chassis and handling but that stems in to modifications. Btw have you seen the glut of STs on the used car market now? And they are bloody well cheap.
@strange6 Well, did you ever have driven both of these cars? The new ST is a little bit better than the old one. The Ford ST makes fun and is a good car (with a high consumption) but at least the GTI is the better engineered car.
Thats funny, so because I am 38 and I bought an ST, I am having a mid life crisis??? LOL In Australia where I am from it would be rare to see someone younger than 25 drive an ST (or XR5 as they are badged here) because they are generally too expensive for younger people (mine cost $42,000 AUD). Both the GTi and ST are very good cars with great value for money overall, so at least we can agree there eh? I would be happy owning either car really..
I know its true about the second paragraph. But the first one doesn't add up. Can you explain to me how it adds that much BHP? also could you show me an example of something similar to the 2.0 TSFI that has that much power put on using a chip. cheers.
It's horses for courses isn't it mate. Some people want the practicality and comfort of the GTI grunt of the turbo and some people like the stiffness of the Type R and the lovely engine which needs lots more work to get the most of. Problem with the Type R is that it's either fast or slow. I can't just nail my foot in 4rd gear and overtake... I have to drop down to 2nd and hammer it, some people don't like that. Most of the respected mags consider the Type R a super hatch.
Actually the R26 does have back seats and a full interior. I think you're referring to the Megane R26.R which is the even more focussed version with no back seats and stripped interior. The normal R26 would easily beat both of these on track and be fine for a daily driver.
Continued...... I'm now shopping for my next car. I've driven the S3, 135i Coupe, Focus ST, GTI 30, Megane, TTS, even a Porsche Caymen. @Dean0017 no sore spots with mi, thank you for your concern, yet your comment couldnt be any more ignorant, tiff was originally in top gear, this program is not a copy, fifth gear is in some way the original "old" top gear but bbc kept the name so they changed it to fifth gear, then bbc decided to re-launch a new top gear (with the old name). tiff is a real driver and his opinion counts 10 times more then Clarkson's Jeremy's and James's put together, top gear is not journalism its just comedy
@Nakke144 Thats weird, when I was in a Mondeo belonging to enterprise. I was trying to race it from where I worked to another branch nearby to do a car swap. It was squealing around corners and roundabouts because its far too heavy. It was a right laugh and fun. Yet when I did that in an Insignia in the same abusive racing manner it was almost impossible to make it screech or lose control. I couldn't have fun. I found the so called journalists to be very wrong about the Mondeo handling.
(1st part) I own a GTI ed30 and I can tell you its 300nm of torque (30.6 kg) is available from only 2200rpm and all the way to 5500. It remains 300nm, if you look at the graph it's absolutely flat line. I own the DSG version so that helps to keep revs up. Then there's the 230hp along with the big K04 turbocharger shared with the S3 (ed30 engine code BYD) that also gives you the push of a naturally aspirated 3.2 liter engine if not more. Not to mention easily upgradable (i.e. oettinger).
As it happens I used to own a MK5 GTI... for all of 4 months. (handed down company car) I found it to be a lovely car but really lacked excitement for me. I think most people will say the engine note is fairly boring but that's not why people buy GTI's. In comparison the Type R just makes me smile all day long, couldn't give a toss if a GTI can overtake me on the motorway! I also had a R32 which had the lovely engine note but the handling again was a bit of a let down.
Again, you must be either a 'GTI purist', or a fanboy of another badge (Ford, Subaru?). The original GTI's were 'great', because there were no other factory 'hot hatches' around then! They were the 'original in class', which is whey they were 'fastest in class'. They were the only ones in that class, for the most part. Your comment on not wanting a GTI for long is assinine. I've had mine since late 2002, and LOVE it! Moreover, it has been mechanically perfect, with no issues!
@getmeblad According to you I thought the ST was alleged to be "So fast" as standard it wouldn't need mountune or any of the above mentioned. And I thought you said if you wanted a 900W microwave you would buy a 900W microwave and you see the logic in "Beefing the Watts" so why would you beef up an ST when there is an RS...
I am aware of that mate, I have it in my ST, but not nearly as much in the VXR, it is just A LOT worse in the VXR because they haven't made a decent chassis, neither is the suspension any good, the differential in the ST helps to LIMIT this problem, but I don't cry because I did my research and test drove the ST before I purchased it.
@Tomholdsworth667 yes a megane R26 may be faster than these, but it has no back seats, no radio, no passenger airbag, plastic windows. Its probably good on a race track. But the point of a hot hatch is it's supposed to perform well & be practicall. Personally i think the 2 best hot hatches today are between the Focus RS & Scirrocco R. Another Ford & VW :)
@getmeblad No turbo petrol lifts off with dieselly torque on 2,000 RPM unless it has an anti-lag system in place because the turbo in a petrol spins on hotter weaker exhaust gasses and needs to be near the max Bhp zone where the inlet valves break out the power after 4,000 revs. Diesel turbo's spin on cooler gasses and are quicker on pick-up. There is only a 14 mile an hour top speed difference between a 2.5T and a 1.9 TDI Oh dear thats poor for a "mighty" 2.5 turbo petrol don't you think?
@RSTBADBOY Its funny how Vauxhall can fit an interior more properly than Ford. Focuses have huge gaps at the ends of the square dashboards which vary because they are poorly aligned. The passenger seats are always 20 ft high and don't have a height mech to lower it. Astras have always had gas pistons under the bonnet since 2004 not old rusty 1970's rods like Focuses still have. The new Astra and Golf have button parking brakes, the Focuses still have out of date handbrake. Lol
@1ns4ne1d10t Oh, c'mon, this is only because of the strict rules, that were applyed to the WRC some years back. All the WRC cars from around 2000 onwards, including Subarus, Citroens, Skodas, Mitsubishis and you name it, have produced around 280-310bhp. Its simply down to the rules that were set, and the fact that the 2-litre engines need to last a whole rallyful of abuse. And they benefit more from torque then bhp these days, for ex. the Focus has 550nm.
the thing is with this is that you can superchip a golf to 310 bhp for 500 pounds where as an ST can only be chipped to around 265bhp as nowadays this is quite an easy thing to do i think the the gti is better due to its better performance once chipped although a 310 bhp front wheel drive car may be very interesting lol
@HypnoticSuggestion I must agree with the poster of the video, this is not a proper review. They should test them proper, performance, interior and exterior design, technology, and perhaps consider price. Still a fun video to watch, although I quite like the ST, by far.
Sitting position and the seats are better in GTI. Love interlagos as well. The chassi saved me a couple of times during emergency high-speed maneuvres on Italian motorways. I've seen many STs here but only one other white Ed30, ST is more "volkswagen" than VW!
@SamTheTwoCan If you mean the Renault RS you should look at the upload date of this video. They didnt get rid of it because it didnt excist yet....Laooosuuuuhuuur ;)
Man I love watching Tiff drive. Balls to the wall all the way. Too bad those goofs on the other show couldn't drive a car and shut up for a change. I guess the talking is meant to distract us from their poor driving skills. Tiff has the skills and clearly knows how to use them.
0-60 MPH in 6.5 seconds is certainly not slow (GTI 24V VR6)! And it so much more refined than the other 'boy racers' you talk about. Ditto for the current crop of GTI's. They are a great mix of 'hot hatch' desirability and practicality.
LMAO!!! Can you make a front drive focus/golf drift like a BMW from the the first corner in the dry? Please, Tiff has been racing for over 30 years, and it shows.
I know the golf is faster but you could fit the ST with a montune tuning kit to increase the power from 225 to 255 of even 295 horsepower without losing the warranty and it would still be cheaper than the golf
Too true! I know 2 people with Golfs that have had endless trouble with them, rear door won't open, handbrake problems, engine lights/problems amongst other things, so much for prestige! We ALL know the Focus hasn't got the best build, but at least it doesn't try to pretend to be something its clearly not - so for all you Golf owners out there, remember you are driving a VW and NOT an Audi. Take TEN years, save up and buy an S3, then you can come back on here with a valid arguement.
That said tiff is actually a karting/formula driver from his roots in the '70s with various levels of success and downfalls . Jason Plato on the other hand is the best driver in these tv-series , as he is a touring-car champion and multiple podium-finisher . Clarkson has no racing-history or roots what so ever before he started his shows..he's just a show-man
Because about 6 months ago I was checking on Oettinger's website about an upgrade and I found the 330bhp/380nm package they got there for only 4500 euro incl. mounting. And that's where I saw the graph. I plan on getting that upgrade I'm just waiting until my guarantee with Volkswagen expires. I'm really not much into technical stuff, but since I plan on getting that upgrade I'd rather as well be serious about it. I'm with the "whatever you do, do it right". The graph is clear and precise.
Microwaves cook/warm food mate, they don't go around corners (the last time I checked anyway LOL) even though your Matiz looks like a microwave and a 900W microwave probably has a bigger power to weight ratio than your Matiz, now thats what makes sense to me LOL! Again I will say, put Eagle F1 assymetric 2's on the ST and the cornering difference won't be that much different than the Golf's. Some advice - take your Matiz, scrap it, save up and hire a Golf for the day and then talk your shit.
actually...the 197bhp golf gti hit 62 in 6.7seconds, as tested by evo magazine. the same as this ST and a VXR. the large engine, means more weight over the front wheels, which means a slightly poorer handlng car technically. and u will struggle to get 30mpg out of it.
For some reason I only see young guys in baseball caps driving STs. :-) ST is a cracking car. I am more GTI-man, for the design primarily. Love how my white Ed30 looks. I do not go on tracks so the extra handling of ST would me lost on me. GTI handles really well on the roads I drive. And it is fast, too. :-)
@dkingd1980 Brilliant mate...I have a 60 plate ST myself...255bhp fucking mental speed. Not as fast as the RS I know...but the ST is setup for day to day use as you say. Very nice to drive...really smooth.
Isn't this video a bit of deja vu. It used to be Tiff with Jeremy and Quentin, but instead its Tom and Jonny in the passenger seats. Tiff is the only presenter that can drive the wheels off a car.
@AudiophileTubes I had first had experience of a brand new VR6 in the not too distant past, although being significantly faster than anything brandishing a GTi badge it was not great car although significantly better than a GTI it was still slow and dull compared to the VXRs, STs, Honda type Rs, Subarus etc etc... The original GTi was not the only car in class, there were Astra GTEs, Ford RS turbos to name a few, and the Golf stood up well to these, but not so these days.
I have Edition 30 with Oettinger small remap to 305 and Eibach Pro-System-Plus suspension. It looks fabulous in white with black wheels, and your ST is no match for it ;-)
The golf may be faster, but when i had one it spent most of its time in the shop, the focus' reliability wins me over. Plus, foci are much cheaper, with the money you save, you can add loads of HP to the focus, and the GTI couldnt touch it.
@HypnoticSuggestion Ah shit, I just realized this video is very old. The new ST's are quite a bit improved, while the GTI's have gotten heavier, and heavier, and heavier, and bigger, and with the same damn engine, well basically. Typical GTI 2.0T 200bhp. American ST 250hp, 260TQ, The Euro ST just as amazing, not as powerful, but so so so satisfying torque curve, they surge like a GM900 Saab Viggen!
The Golf MK1 is so great that it just needs some slight adjustments to keep that same standard of GTi Greatness throughout... Ford on the other hand allegedly "improve" the Focus but fall back miserably on penny-saving cut-backs to compensate for that so called "improvement" so the buyers who buy Ford's keep on thinking "the Mk1 was rubbish this ones better" "the Mk2 was rubbish this ones better" "the Mk3 was... & so on...
I have no basis to argue the point of the Renault as we don't get them in the States but, for all around livability, style and sportiness you can't beat the GTI in my opinion and I would hazard the guess that it's the same story against the Renault.
I myself own a Passat. My father owns a GTI and my mother owns a Jetta GLI. None of our turbo's blow out. Our seatbelts are fine and same can be said to our windows. Really, I just thing you're using the art of the hyperbole. Maybe a few things did go wrong, but there isn't a need to exagerate. All 3 of our cars work great. I've built 60k+ miles on my 2006 passat, my father has almost 20k+ on his '08 GTI and my mother has around 40k+ on her '07 GLI and we're having no major problems.
@RSTBADBOY ...And Ford spray their plastic poundland interior handles a grotty silver instead of bothering to put chrome back to the plastic interior handles like vauxhall does. At least it meakes them feel like chrome and at least they LAST if anything. Ford would calve door handles out of cow pat if they could getaway with it. After all they seem to be good at making things miles and miles apart from eachother like the doors, wings, bonnet, gaps inside the dashboard. etc
@HypnoticSuggestion Also GTi 30 Golf 2.0T (06) 0-60 mph 6.4 s Weight 1376 kg Power 226bhp Top speed 151mph ST Focus 2.5T (06) 0-60 mph 6.6 s Weight 1317 kg Power 221 bhp Top Speed 152 mph Golf is faster than the ST to 60mph and around a track.
I've seen ST in orange around town. Yes, it stands out, but when I see it I think to myself "I made the right choice with GTi". ST looks cheap. TO me it is a car for 20-22 year olds. GTI has elegance, subtle beauty as Clarkson said. I agree with him.
The Golf is a nice car no doubt, but when you look at the price hike over the Focus it's just too expensive. You could have the top Focus ST3 with leather,Xenons and all the bells and whistles and still have a good few grand in your pocket. If money were no object the Golf,if you're on a budget get the Focus.
Its a special edition 30 golf with 230bhp and bigger k04 turbo, learn about cars before you comment
220
230, he's correct
Bigger injectors also.... same ones as the s3 8p
Yeah but it doesn’t have that 5 pot sweetness

Ive never seen a FWD car do that around corners. with out the use of a hand brake.

Another Ford & VW :)
what's the song when they were in the GTI, before the timed lap?
What hot hatch in a similar category would you say handles well then?
Its not a normal GTI its a limited edition with bigger turbo
@SportLeichtRensport you mean Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James may?lol
Just for this record as well, I was going my TomTom OK?
I have an ED30 3 door - chipped to 297bhp and it is a BEAST!!!!!
Lol
What is the name of the track??? the first one, that is like electronic...
I know it is and thats what makes it a fair test. I think the edition 30 is more similar to a focus st than a normal gti is.
the thing is with this is that you can superchip a golf to 310 bhp for 500 pounds where as an ST can only be chipped to around 265bhp as nowadays this is quite an easy thing to do i think the the gti is better due to its better performance once chipped although a 310 bhp front wheel drive car may be very interesting lol
@HypnoticSuggestion I must agree with the poster of the video, this is not a proper review. They should test them proper, performance, interior and exterior design, technology, and perhaps consider price.
Still a fun video to watch, although I quite like the ST, by far.
Whats The Name of The Song @ 1:40 ????
Sitting position and the seats are better in GTI. Love interlagos as well. The chassi saved me a couple of times during emergency high-speed maneuvres on Italian motorways. I've seen many STs here but only one other white Ed30, ST is more "volkswagen" than VW!
Whoever thought up this show must just be so innovative and original. They're even European, what a new spin!
possible to just enter the corner and flick your backside.... just have to be entering the corner a bit quicker
my dad might be getting a gti soon
btw what is the song (techno song) i know the name but totally forgot
@SamTheTwoCan
If you mean the Renault RS you should look at the upload date of this video.
They are a great mix of 'hot hatch' desirability and practicality.
come si chiama la canzone appena parte la golf per il test ?
What is that for a song at 1.40 ?
Clarkson has no racing-history or roots what so ever before he started his shows..he's just a show-man
forgoten but she also made another track called 'Super Mal - Bigger than Big'...find that track find this song.
Golf Ed30 : ESP completly off?
actually...the 197bhp golf gti hit 62 in 6.7seconds, as tested by evo magazine. the same as this ST and a VXR. the large engine, means more weight over the front wheels, which means a slightly poorer handlng car technically. and u will struggle to get 30mpg out of it.
The ST all day long and Im not biased at all.......
when you have ASR on, it is imposible get to drift Golf 5. only if I switch off this system and I go really fast...
ED30 with an R tech Map
What is the name of the first song when the vw golf gti edition 30
For some reason I only see young guys in baseball caps driving STs. :-)
ST is a cracking car. I am more GTI-man, for the design primarily. Love how my white Ed30 looks. I do not go on tracks so the extra handling of ST would me lost on me. GTI handles really well on the roads I drive. And it is fast, too. :-)
What do you drive?
how the hell does he do that in front wheel drive cars and st any day
@dkingd1980 Brilliant mate...I have a 60 plate ST myself...255bhp fucking mental speed.
@AudiophileTubes
I had first had experience of a brand new VR6 in the not too distant past, although being significantly faster than anything brandishing a GTi badge it was not great car although significantly better than a GTI it was still slow and dull compared to the VXRs, STs, Honda type Rs, Subarus etc etc...
The original GTi was not the only car in class, there were Astra GTEs, Ford RS turbos to name a few, and the Golf stood up well to these, but not so these days.
The song is "cars" by Gary Numan.
sry about my mistake.. I allways combine under and overstearing..
I have Edition 30 with Oettinger small remap to 305 and Eibach Pro-System-Plus suspension. It looks fabulous in white with black wheels, and your ST is no match for it ;-)
its from DJ Mason - Exeeder
The golf may be faster, but when i had one it spent most of its time in the shop, the focus' reliability wins me over. Plus, foci are much cheaper, with the money you save, you can add loads of HP to the focus, and the GTI couldnt touch it.
@HypnoticSuggestion Ah shit, I just realized this video is very old. The new ST's are quite a bit improved, while the GTI's have gotten heavier, and heavier, and heavier, and bigger, and with the same damn engine, well basically.
Typical GTI 2.0T 200bhp. American ST 250hp, 260TQ, The Euro ST just as amazing, not as powerful, but so so so satisfying torque curve, they surge like a GM900 Saab Viggen!
this is not a serious test. they are just having fun... he forces the two cars to understeer and oversteer
I drive a ST but I know that the Ed30 is faster. It's more expensive, though.
It's more expensive and a lot less pikey.
After all they seem to be good at making things miles and miles apart from eachother like the doors, wings, bonnet, gaps inside the dashboard. etc
It's hard to tell as you can't tell the diffrence between a GTI and a standard 1.6 ;o)
Edition 30
@HypnoticSuggestion
Also
GTi 30 Golf 2.0T (06)
0-60 mph 6.4 s
Weight 1376 kg
Power 226bhp
Top speed 151mph
ST Focus 2.5T (06)
0-60 mph 6.6 s
Weight 1317 kg
Power 221 bhp
Top Speed 152 mph
Golf is faster than the ST to 60mph and around a track.
Fully agree, They're trying to match the standard of witty banter between Clarkson, Hammond and May, and they've failed.
What track is this?
I've seen ST in orange around town. Yes, it stands out, but when I see it I think to myself "I made the right choice with GTi". ST looks cheap. TO me it is a car for 20-22 year olds. GTI has elegance, subtle beauty as Clarkson said. I agree with him.
The Golf is a nice car no doubt, but when you look at the price hike over the Focus it's just too expensive. You could have the top Focus ST3 with leather,Xenons and all the bells and whistles and still have a good few grand in your pocket. If money were no object the Golf,if you're on a budget get the Focus.
Like the DeadMau5 around the 3min mark =D
