I have thoroughly enjoyed these videos. Basically backs up what I’ve been doing for about 5 years now. I however would recommend running at least five gallons of fuel mixed with motul and then you’ll see why I have gone from that to H1R. The motul leaves a heavy sooty carbon deposit in the muffler as well as more coking around and in between the ring lands. It may work well for firewood guys that are repeatedly bucking. Basically full load for the majority of use. But I work in the PNW as a professional timber faller. So there is lots of limbing, bucking, and falling. Lots of blips of the throttle and a fair amount of idling in a 6 hour day. Some oils don’t show their true color until a guy runs 5 gallons or so through a saw, in a variety of conditions and loads.
I bought a used kx250 that came with a new jug of motul 800, it was drooling out of the tail pipe non stop. I switched to the lucas smokeless low ash I normally run and stopped the spooge. Motul makes good oil but I'd buy the 710 not the 800.
I raced dirt bikes when I was younger and have rode them my whole life and I have always ran motorcycle oil in my saws and outdoor equipment and in 25 or so years I have never had a single engine problem that was oil or fuel related! I have changed oils through the years but still use motorcycle oils without a single problem to date!! All premixed at 40:1 same I run in my bikes!!
I got my first chainsaw in 72. That is a long time ago and have worked in the woods with many cutters. Thr typical cutter who has engine trouble are those who insist on cutting air. You know the ones, full throttle to snip off a few limbs. Then you have the guys that will run a dull saw. Again the saw is running hi rpms no load. I did burn up one saw in my career. I burnt a half a tank of raw gas by mistake in a 254xp. It did not go well. Half a tank is all it could handle before stopping.
@@alexcarr8503 yeah raw gas will kill them quick I had a 2005 Cr250 my brother took riding with his friend and on the way to bring it back to me he stopped at a gas station and put plain gas in I took it for a quick ride didn’t get 100 yards from my house and could hear it getting tight luckily I knew to shut it down I knew what had happened as soon as I herd the bike get tight! Quick rebuild and a resleave of the cylinder and it was back in the woods but it did happen quick!!
Same here ….i raced snowmobiles and have always used the same 2 stroke skidoo oil in all my 2 stroke equipment….i run everything 40:1 …where most recommend 50:1 I run most of my stuff on the edge of being lean for max power….never an issue in 30+years

Happy New Year Richard!! I liked what you said about today’s equipment being more technological. My first saw in 80’s was a Homelite Super XL. It called for 16:1 and you could toss anything slick into your gas and it ran. Had it for over 20 years and sold it to my brother. Wish I’d kept it.
Great job. I’ve ran Motul 800 in my dirt bikes for years and in all my 2 stroke yard tools. I burn about 5 cords of firewood per year my Husky 350 is 25 plus years old and my Stihl MS271 is 12 years old they have had nothing but quality motorcycle oil in them.
Thanks for all good information you put out! I really do appreciate it and I know I’m not the only one. Definitely my go to source for information on these little wonders.
I really appreciate the two cycle oil reviews that you’ve done. You are right the chainsaws are not cheap anymore and I want to do everything I can to make them last long based on your review I use saber now may try the Honda HP2. Thanks again!
I've been trying Castrol Go 2t conventional. Says its good for motorcycles and it's $7.50 per quart at O'Reilly Auto. Seems like a good value. The motul oil I bought 2 years ago has gone up more than 20%
Amsoil saber is $17.19 a quart directly from them. If you sign up for a preferred customer account its 13.29 a quart. If you are going to be buying a lot the preferred customer account pays for itself. Hope this helps. Happy new year!
I'm going to be signing up for their preferred membership when possible. I want to buy a couple 12 quart cases of their AMSOIL Signature 5w30 to stock up for when the trucks need oil changes. Ok, this is the video I needed and by visually skimming the first few minutes, skipped it earlier. That's one of the reasons it's about 25 cents more. Our ethanol free is restricted by law, though, so I gotta go 20 miles to get some (in a boating and sledding area).
Really enjoy the oil videos, Richard. Curious to know if you can get Penrite oils where you are located? add red line 2 stroke oil to the list if you do another one, expensive at about $15/16 oz., but at 40-1 it does a nice job in any saw. ran it in a racing rx-7 rotary at 100-1 premix. for anyone that can't find ethanol free gas, make your own. buy a couple gallons of 93/94/95 octane from the pump. add around 13 ounce of distilled water per gallon if the pump says 10% and shake it up well for a couple minutes. let sit and separate off for an hour. the ethanol free gas will be on the top and the ethanol/water mix on the bottom, you can clearly see the dividing line. either syphon off the good stuff from the top or use a gravy separator like i do to dump the bad out the bottom. i find i get about 1.6 gallons of ethanol free from 2 gallons of supposed 10% ethanol pump fuel. still, much cheaper than buying canned.
New Sub Here. Really enjoyed watching your testing videos on the different oils. I think you have saved me alot of money in my future. All my ultra oil is going into the trash
Happy new year Richard. Thank you for all your efforts! My local home depot has the 16oz measuring bottles of red armor on clearance for $8.50. I snatched up a few.
@richardflagg3084 ,how does VP full synthetic compare to the red armor? Those are 2 that are easily accessible in my area! Is Amsoil saber 50:1 really the best? Or should I run it 100:1? Crazy to me the suggest 100:1.
Very informative videos on two stroke oil. I will get some Saber as I'm sick of the markup from the small bottles of Stihl. Plus I want the best oil to take care of my Stihl equipment ( 251 chain saw, pole saw, brush cutter, going to add a larger chainsaw)The Saber is rated for 100:1 ratio. I'm skeptical that's the best idea. Should I stick with 50:1 to play it safe or go with their recommended 100:1 ratio? Thanks in advance.
Thanks for all the great info as usual. I run the Lucas semi-synthetic for about 10.00 a quart. Seems like it’s used in the motorcycle scene quite a bit but scoffed at with the chainsaw folks. Any plans to test it in the future?
Would you be interested in testing some premixed fuel to see how good there oils are like VP husky moto mix and aspen fuel to see how those oils are be interesting to see how the aspen is it burns really clean just an idea keep up the great videos
We need a chainsaw aromatherapy survey to identify which oils smell best and which oils stink worst. It will be kind of like a wine tasting to see which oils pass the sniff test.
@@mikecraftsmancustombuilder3650 It could complement a line of scented bar oils like scented bath oils since everybody gets a bath in them anyway. Getting home to the old lady smelling like cherries and coconut instead of pine sap and diesel could be rewarding.
I said on my channel 4-5 years back HR1 is the best chainsaw motor oil on the planet. It clings. Mixes and stays suspended in very cold weather. I run a mix of clones and Stihls. Mixing it up 2-5gal and then dividing it up in easy to use containers. I love my equipment and feed it well. Nice to see others thinking outside the box. It's sold at most motorcycle dealers so everybody got access.
HP2 is the only oil I haven’t run yet. Really like the H1-R that’s what I’ve been running for a while now. Would like to run some of the Klotz oils, Maxima K2, and HP2. Those are next on my list.
I am getting a lot of amzoil ads now! I try to watch all the ads and not skip. Hopefully it helps the channel out. I do believe in Schaeffer‘s additive package they include micron moly and penetro which are extreme pressure anti-wear components. The last Schaeffer‘s TC-W3 I purchased was $10.99/quart locally. Great info!
Thanks Richard Great job putting all that testing and tear down together to prove your results! Lot of effort for that end inspection. Only one oil type to prove good or bad left. And probably used longer than all others. SAE 30 weight. Just saying. No doubt it may make more carbon but bottom end protection seems good. New saw manuals do say to decarbon at specific hour intervals. No one seems to dare try it these days.
Hey Richard I love your videos about the better oils to run in your small equipment. I would love to know your thoughts about marine oil. I would like to see some testing on that. I have ran quicksilver in the past. In the can looks good and blue. If it sets in the equipment for long it turns green like still ultra does and will not burn. Pore out the fuel put fresh in and they run like a champ.
Thanks a lot for all the effort you put on this oil test, wanna ask you if can test Bardahl, here in Italy it's used a lot especially in motocycle, it's made is usa and they demand a special technology, also not very expensive. Best regards Giovanni
Happy New Year!!, Rich. Great content on the mix oils. You should have a test of the motul 710 2t. See what you think. Will have to see if I can get the hp2. Though i suspect it will be more expensive than motul stuff👍
I mix motul 800 at 32:1, I also add a splash of startron fuel stabilizer to each batch of fuel. I have had saws sit for a year with fuel in them and they fire right up.
@Richard Flagg Just from watching your teardowns, I dumped Stihl HP Ultra after running maybe 6 tanks of it in my new MS 362R non-MTronic saw, and was giving Bel-Ray MC-1 a go for about 4 tanks worth at a 40:1 mix. Based on further watching of your testing I have decided to try Amsoil Saber, and run a tank of Red Armor every 5 or 6 tanks of the Saber. What mix ratio of each would you recommend? I was thinking 50:1 or 60:1 for the Saber, and 40:1 for the Red Armor. ...your thoughts about my take-aways from watching your many oil test videos? Oh yeah, Happy New Year!
Is there a noticeable difference with Saber between a 100:1 or 80:1 and a more rich ratio like 50:1 or 40:1 when you do a tear down? Does the richer mixtures produce more carbon build up?
Saber burns just as clean at 80:1 as it does at 40:1. I've got a couple of customers that run it at 40:1 and the cylinder looks great. Awesome film on the crank and bearings.
Thank you for the content. Time to see the bike oils for 5 gallons of use each in your test saw, not just one tank. See how clean the exhaust ports look and the insides look. Dominator, HP2, Motul ect.
The trick is for saws that have that twist lock. You need to put two of those foam washers so it’s a tighter lock down and lightly grease the rim of the stock air filter. The real fix is a max flow.
I have been using the Lucas land and sea tc-w3. I think you mentioned testing a Lucas in the future. I hope it's decent I've been using it for about a year now. Thanks for the real word test. It has been informational and entertaining.
Yea I'm also looking really forward to the Lucas oil test, it's readily available and I've ran it with no noticeable difference compared to red armor. Never thought about motorcycle oils for whatever reason before your testing @RichardFlagg3084. Thank you for your efforts and I look forward to what you have yet to come.
I've been using the lucas semi synthetic smokeless low ash stuff in bikes and saws for 10 years without issue. It's in the clear one liter jugs quite cheap locally. The land and sea stuff is for boats, I was told not to run it in my bike, it's not as good when the motor gets hot.
@nseric1233 I get what you mean. I know alot swear by the shaffers boat oil for small engines i cant buy it local tho. The Lucas boat oil I looked at it with the mindset of boat engines take abuse in high rpms like a saw. I might be looking at it wrong to.
@@ethanpemberton9011 Boat engines never get hot, they run very cold because they use the water they're in for a rad. Oils made for boats burn very clean and burn off at lower temps than oils for air cooled motors which get quite hot at times. The land and sea oil is ok but the other lucas oil is better and the same price.
Great information Richard . Question I just bought a new 500I I bought the Honda HP2 oil is it ok to run this oil will it void manufacturer warranty? Weight ratio ? Thanks in advance
I buy mine Rocky Mountain ATV when it goes on sale and get free shipping. Redbull661 has a video with 12 tanks run through his 661. Search "Redbull661 Honda HP2"
Will ethanol free fuel last longer with stabil or sea foam added to it ? or do you think those products won't make a major difference ? Also thank you for your videos I have learned a lot from you and I am now running HP2 in my saws and its good to know my new pro saws are going to last longer and run better. I like to mix at least 5 gallons at a time because I have to drive a good amount to get ethanol free fuel so I added Stabil to my fuel because they claim it will last longer but what are your thoughts on that ?
Seafoam doesn't have any storage benefits according to the bottle if I remember correctly. You should be able to store Efree gas for 90 days, longer if the can is full and stored in a cool dry place. I'm not a fan of stabilizers, but if you really want to try some, use something made for marine use. There's ten's of thousands on the line with outboards. I feel they may be better than others. No proof of that just my two cents. Great Idea for a fall video series!
I have been using saber at 32:1 in every thing from back pack blower s to weedeater s an saws. For yrs. No problem s. Do you think that is two heavy of a mix? I have taken apart a few of my saws. At that mix an every thing looks great.
Do ask around if you're looking for Amsoil products. I found a good selection at 1 of the 3 local NAPA stores, but it wasn't advertised, nor did it show up on the dealer locator page. If another store hadn't pointed me in that direction when I made some inquires, I'd have never known about it. Btw, Saber there was `$17 / quart (summer '23)
I will buy you a quart of Royal purple hp2c if you could do a video of how well it performs at 50 and also 40 because I would like to see how it does against the other motorcycle oils

New Sub Here. Really enjoyed watching your testing videos on the different oils. I think you have saved me alot of money in my future. All my ultra oil is going into the trash
Thanks for the content in 2023 Richard. Happy new year!
Live in The Upstate have many saws, enjoy your channel. ARC
Try some ASPEN 2 would like to see some testing on it.. Keep up great info.
Happy new year. Thanks for the information and tips keep the great videos coming 🎉
Happy New year Richard and thanks for the information from Yorkshire uk
Happy New Year to you as well!
Happy New Year!
I've been using Opti-2 at 40:1 and seen good results from it
Good call on mixing your own. I am switching over from the pre mixed bottles. Thanks 👍
Klotz benol and R-50 for my 044 and 500i! Love caster oils just hate the residue
Happy new year everyone. Thanks for the great videos Rich!
We gotta get together sometime soon. Happy New Year my friend!
@@richardflagg3084 yea we definitely do.
HP2!!! Heck yeah. good review Rich
Rich good info ❤❤❤
All the best for next year ❤❤❤🍸🍸🍸🍻🍻🍺🍺🍺
Ran 927 for years. Fantastic oil. But. It will seperate and will need to be shaken a bit before use after sitting awhile.
Didn’t miss the 927 test?
My favorite is red armor oil 2010’s since.
My all equipments.
👍🏻👍🏻 happy new year!
Thanks Richard! Just bought the Honda oil off Amazon. I have always mixed 40 to 1
We need a chainsaw aromatherapy survey to identify which oils smell best
and which oils stink worst. It will be kind of like a wine tasting to see which
oils pass the sniff test.
Using sommelier terms like "earthy finish" etc 😂
@@mikecraftsmancustombuilder3650 It could complement a line of
scented bar oils like scented bath oils since everybody gets a bath
in them anyway. Getting home to the old lady smelling like cherries
and coconut instead of pine sap and diesel could be rewarding.
Redbull661 has a video about the HP2. Its all I run and I call it "Smurfs Blood". The oil is the color of the bottle.
That's good news as Belray is under £30 a litre in the UK and is available thanks for doing the research, and happy new year.
Happy new year 🎉
Thanks a lot for all the effort you put on this oil test, wanna ask you if can test Bardahl, here in Italy it's used a lot especially in motocycle, it's made is usa and they demand a special technology, also not very expensive.
@Richard Flagg
Just from watching your teardowns, I dumped Stihl HP Ultra after running maybe 6 tanks of it in my new MS 362R non-MTronic saw, and was giving Bel-Ray MC-1 a go for about 4 tanks worth at a 40:1 mix.
Adding in the red armor isn’t going to make a noticeable difference. He uses his saber at 40:1 which always works well.
Great video compa 🤠
Once again, thank you.
Great channel! Have you tried Redline Racing 2 stroke?
I'd love to see how Lucas semi synthetic does! I got a quart of that and Honda HP2 to try out.
I love Honda oils. Great channel and product review
I have been using the Lucas land and sea tc-w3. I think you mentioned testing a Lucas in the future. I hope it's decent I've been using it for about a year now. Thanks for the real word test. It has been informational and entertaining.
As soon as I test the Maxima 927 oil, Lucas is next. I had no idea so many folks used it. It comes up more often than you would think.
You'll have no warranty issue with HP2. 40:1 did very well in my test.
@@richardflagg3084 thanks Richard I ordered some gonna run it it's a brand new saw
@@richardflagg3084 I’ve got a bone stick Stihl ms 170, since stihl recommends 50:1, does running 40:1 require any carb modifications.
Yamube 2R? I been using it . Dont know how to know if its better or not . Did you ever look at it ?
Not yet......😎
Thanks so much Richerd Im really looking hard at the Honda HP2 did you mix it 40-1 ?
Looking forward to what’s up in the new year ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Yes, I tested it at 40:1.
@richardflagg3084 awesome thank you and I look forward to the results of that video
Happy New Year Richard - great content on the mix oils 👍👍
Happy New Year to you as well!!
I get Amsoil saber for 13.26$ a quart
I have been using saber at 32:1 in every thing from back pack blower s to weedeater s an saws. For yrs. No problem s. Do you think that is two heavy of a mix? I have taken apart a few of my saws. At that mix an every thing looks great.
Amazing how good it burns at rich ratios huh? 40:1 should be just fine, but keep doing what you're doing. Thanks for sharing!
Did you list them in order of preference at the end?? Ie. Saber, then h1r, HP2, motul?
HP2, Saber, H1R, Motul 800 off road. Saber and belray are nick and neck.
Happy New Year!!!
Happy New Year to you as well!!
Amsoil saber is often carried by NAPA Auto Parts. That's where I get mine.
What's the name of those little mixing cups?
4:19 you can see the name on the cup
Could you test the royal purple HP2C?
Hello, Did you end up testing the 927? Didnt see that vid.. watched all others.
Thanks!
Not yet. Coming soon!
I had no idea. I need to check my NAPA.
I was just thinking about getting Opti-2 have you ever tried that oil?
I've bn running the HP2 for several years and don't plan on changing anytime soon.
Can you test the Klotz 50:1 for small air cooled engines?
I love my amsoil saber. I’m an independent dealer as I’d be more than happier to help get you the amsoil products you need… 👍👍👍
Excited to see more bike oil videos to see if the Honda HP2 will be dethroned, is it safe to say that hp2 is your favorite currently?
Saber and HP2 are the best I've tested. So far....
Any opinion on one being cleaner burning than the other or is it too early to tell with the HP2? Thanks for the reply, love your videos 👍🏼
Im running Polaris v.e.s full synthetic oil in my husqvarna 460 rancher!
Have you tried Klotz R-50 cart racing oil
I will buy you a quart of Royal purple hp2c if you could do a video of how well it performs at 50 and also 40 because I would like to see how it does against the other motorcycle oils
Happy new year Richard!!
Happy New Year to you!
Happy New Year Richard!🤩🤩🎉🎉
Thank you. Happy New year to you as well!
I reuse the premeasured small bottles…..I have a gallon of skidoo 2stroke oil and pour it into the small oz bottles a head of time….usually 4 or 5 ready to go so when I’m running saws , blowers , weed eaters etc I don’t have to spend time pre measuring oil…just dump and mix .
