My late wife was from Yucatan, and she introduced me to Jose Jose. I love Latin music, but this one hits me every time. It is like he is describing my sad feelings about the loss of my wife almost 3 years ago. If you want to see a grown man cry, play this song.

Even more surprising is that his place was third!
the jury wanted to justify itself by arguing that it was a song contest and not interpretations or performers.
Well, the songs that were in first and second never transcended compared to this one.
      Somehow justice was served.

The 2th place was for Mirla Castellanos, a Venezuelan singer who performed the song "Con los brazos cruzados". José José took third place, despite his great performance. Of course, people in the audience were so pissed off, but the contest was not for the best performance, but for the best composition. The thing is no one remembers the other songs or singers that won over El Príncipe.

José José went from zero to hero overnight because of this. Most of this audience were VIPs in Latin American music, be it producers, singers, musicians, composers, you name it. Nobody knew José José, and while he didn't win this contest (he ended up 3rd place) the very next morning he became one of our most beloved singers for the decades to come.

You wont believe he finished 3rd place on this festival, and funny part is nobody remember 1rst or 2nd place but him.

    Lyrics and (semi-pro) translation
    Qué triste fue decirnos adiós
How sad it was to say goodbye
    Cuando nos adorábamos más
When we loved each other the most
    Hasta la golondrina emigró
Even the swallow left (migrated, as animals do, but it's a double entendre: we left, the bird left)
    Presagiando el final
    Foretelling the end
Qué triste luce todo sin ti
How sad looks everything without you
Los mares de las playas se van
The seas are abandoning the beaches
Se tiñen los colores de gris
Colors are paintes grey (more like, In gray, painted are the colors, using an unusual syntaxis that, in Spanish, makes common phrases more poetic, kind of Paradise Lost instead of Lost Paradise)
    Hoy todo es soledad
    Today everything is loneliness
No sé si vuelva a verte después
I don't know if I will see you later, again
No sé qué de mi vida será
I don't know what will become of my life
Sin el lucero azul de tú ser
Without the blue star that you are/Without you, my blue star
    Que no me alumbra ya
That no longer lights me (as in, light my way)
    Hoy quiero saborear mi dolor
I want to savor/taste my pain today
    No pido compasión ni piedad
I don't ask for sympathy nor pity
La historia de este amor se escribió
    This love's story was written
    Para la eternidad
    For all eternity
Qué triste todos dicen que soy
How sad (a person) everyone say I am
Que siempre estoy hablando de ti
That I am always talking of you
No saben que pensando en tu amor, en tu amor
The don't know that thinking of your love, of your love
    He podido ayudarme a vivir
I've been able to help me (to) live
    He podido ayudarme a vivir
I've been able to help me (to) live
    Oh oh oh oh
    Oh oh oh oh
    Hoy quiero saborear mi dolor
I want to savor/taste my pain today
    No pido compasión ni piedad
I don't ask for sympathy nor pity

Also, Nina, the sound you classify as castanets are actually a percussion instrument called claves, consisting of a pair of short, wooden sticks about 8-10 inches long and about 1 inch in diameter. Although traditionally made of wood, such as rosewood or ebony, many modern claves are made of fiberglass or plastic. When struck, they produce a bright, penetrating clicking noise. They are used extensively in Afro-Cuban music, traditional music such as the son and guaguancó, and more recently, cumbia, merengue and salsa.

    The Sad One
    (Roberto Cantoral)
How sad it was to say goodbye
When we loved each other the most
    Even the swallow emigrated
    Foreboding the end
How sad it all looks without you
    The seas leave the beaches
    Colors are dyed gray
    Today it's all loneliness
I don't know if I'll see you again afterwards
I don't know what will become of my life
Without the blue star of your being
    shining upon me anymore
Today I want to relish my pain
I ask neither for pity nor mercy
The story of this love was written
    for the eternity
How sad all say I am
That I'm always talking about you
They don't know that thinking of your love
    of your love
I've been able to help myself
    go on living

Interesting analysis of this amazing singer I've just discovered. I've always been frustrated that I cannot sing which is why I focus on Songwriting then have them recorded by session singers..I did sing a song of mine called " Havana Moon " .

I know that you analyzed the tones and the way he sings, which is very good, but it is necessary to understand the lyrics of the song to know that it is a work of art that was composed so much to reach that emotion that the song wants for its lyrics. and for their different tones of voice

Actually let me correct you. It didn’t win. That was part of the controversy. It was the audience favorite but he didn’t win. In the end, Jose Jose career was catapulted at that moment and he went on to become a legend

This festival and the other Latino music competition, el OTI, are often compared to Eurovision in that they are often accused of being rigged for a specific contestant. The fact that Jose Jose didn't win is what propelled him to fame as people saw through the politics of the contest and recognized his authentic talent. It was sad to see him lose his voice towards the end of his life from years of alcohol and drug abuse.

@ninaschofield He was known as "The Prince of Song" in Mexico. That was a performance from very early in his career. He went on to rule the world of Spanish romance with ballad after ballad. He's a legend in Mexico, very much like an Elvis. A once in a lifetime voice. You should listen to his mid-career music, and his rendition of My Way (look for "A mi manera") and New York New York.
In the late 1980s, when I went on a first date with my now wife of 35 years, she got in the car and handed me a cassette to play while we drove. It was Jose Jose. My goodness! She was in the mood for romance, because those songs and that voice set the mood for our relationship for the next 20 years! WOW!!
Thank you for reviewing Jose Jose, but without the lyrics and romance behind the vocal mastery, I imagine you're not getting the FULL EFFECT of this man's impact!
    Blessings and peace!
