That song "El Triste" was one of the most difficult songs to sing. I saw that performance on TV; I was 14 years old. He never sung that song like that again in his career. He became a superstar and for me personally, the best voice ever from Mexico. He had hit after hit after hit. Life, corrupt managers, drugs and alcohol took a toll on his career and voice. It got to a point where he could not sing again. But that one evening in 1970, that festival launched him to superstardom.

The sustained notes are not the only difficulty of this song; it may seem that is not very high, and it only uses two octaves, but most of the notes are in the passaggio. That's one of the reasons very few artists are able to really sing this song well.
I don´t know if you noticed almost at the end of the video a guy with the jaw dropped, he is Marco Antonio Muñiz called the pride of México, and he was surprised of such a talent. When he was on tour in Puerto Rico, On the marquee of the theater the did´t need to put his name, just "He is here"
The guy in the Burgundy jacket that gives him a hug towards the end is the author of the song, Roberto Cantoral. He wrote many beautiful and heartfelt songs that are part of the Mexican musical and cultural heritage.

Everyone at that place though that he had won 1st place, that performance left everyone marveled that's why they rushed to o congrats him, but then they said he won 3rd place to this day many ppl think they took 1st place from it's rightful owner...

Camilo Sesto was amazing as a singer and songwriter! He wrote a song especially for Jose Jose called "Si Me Dejas Ahora," but which Sesto also recorded. Both versions are beautiful, but Jose Jose's is my favorite.

The first lady in the audience was Angelica Maria a very big star, actress and singer. The first man with the awwe face is Marco Antonio Muñiz, a extremely big singer and occasional actor, one of the best singers in Mexico. The second man is Alberto Vázquez, another singer actor.

My all-time favorite crooner, Jose Jose! He was such a magnificent and gracious performer. His father was an opera singer and his mother a classically trained pianist. Sinatra was a great fan. He had so many hits, even a cross-over hit in the USA called 'La Nave Del Olvido'. Other unforgettable songs by him: 'Almohada' and 'Amar y Querer.' ["El Triste" en vivo means "The Sad One" (a live [performance]).

Well, The Prince keep his audience in awe during this and many concerts and presentantions because he was a master managing the air while singing. Some people believed he had four lungs instead of two!
Btw, that beautiful woman they show while he sang, is Angélica María, "La Novia de México" ( Mexico's Girlfriend ), Alberto Vázquez, great singer also with his eternal cigarette in his mouth, and the late Marco Antonio Muñiz "El Lujo de México" ( The Luxury of Mexico), very famous and talented and also a legend himself, staring in disbelief with an open mouth...

And to think that his name was drawn out of a hat, containing only 2 names (the other was a female) to decide who was going to sing this song. If I'm not mistaken, it was the composer who took the name out of the hat. I am sure he had no regrets.. what a wonderful song.
José José at that time was an unknown artist, so the composer took an enormous risk. The fact that he only came 3rd caused outrage in Mexico and the rest of Latin America, and he became an instant public favourite..the rest, as they say, is history. One of the finest Latin American performers who was a really modest and fine guy.

Me gustaría que analizara la voz, el canto de Marco Antonio Muñíz, que es el caballero que está "boquiabierto" y que le hacen un primer plano...Ya Marco Antonio Muñíz era famoso. Años más tarde ellos hicieron un hermoso dúo. También aparece en ese vídeo la gran Angélica María, una gran artista mexicana...cantante y actriz. Entre otros artistas, como Alberto Vázquez (el caballero con un cigarrillo en la boca) y aplaudiendo con alegría y fuerte...Vásquez es Otro gran cantante mexicano.
I was just gonna ask who the heck was 2nd and 1st place but seems no one knows 🤣. I love seeing how international talents like you react to and appreciate our prince of song as he was called. He specially is so treasured to me as my grandma knew him in his childhood/teen life before he became famous and changed his name to his artistic name we all know him by. Rest in peace jose jose I'm sure you met grandma and she could tell you just how ecstatic she was when she heard you on the radio for the first time.

They said the competition was not for best singer , but they were scoring the songs' lyrics. But, even thogh they said people we complained about it and were very upset about the decision coursing the judges.
