It's hard to get young people involved in shooting when most ranges have some old, grumpy dudes yelling at everyone.

Tell me about it, I have a range 5 minutes from my place and I still drive 30 minutes South to a different range. The one close to me is filled with grumpy old dudes. They will yell at you through a speaker if they see you put a magazine in your semi auto rifle. You heard me right. They do not allow you to use magazine in your rifle 🙄 go figure. Not even an empty one. And for pistol you need to space your shots more than 2 seconds. And they will kick you out and yell at you any time they want.

I go to the range, yes. Not because I want to shoot guns, but to enter juniot divisions competitions. My dad got me into shooting actually, it was maybe because I liked playing video game shooters when I was younger.

Totally agree! This was bad on both sides but RSOs need to be way mote relaxed about dumb stuff and more focused on actual safety. RSO's like him don't want you there unless you have a Winchester 95, Model 70, Remington 700 or a Sears & Roebuck single shot.
Occasionally I go to these DNR ranges in MI if I can't make the 3 hour drive to my property to shoot all day, and there are some RSO's like this guy. Had one tell me I shouldn't shoot my M1 rifle so much as the noise was disturbing the guy in the lane next to me who was trying to sight in his... you guessed it, Model 70 😂

Anyone who instigates a fight at a GUN range should be banned for life. There is ZERO room for escalated attitudes at a gun range. It's extremely unsafe. Even in Marine Corps boot camp the instructors are very calm and helpful for range week.

Let me see if I can clarify some of this.
    1. This is a public range owned by the County, but run by private contract.
    2. It is impossible to be on the range with out signing in at the guard shack.
    3. Safety glasses were offered this group, but declined. There is no range requirement for EP.
    4. The rounds used for the revolver were low pressure loads for first time shooters.
    5. The "RSO" knew that we had signed in, but was continuing his harassment of any and all independent instructors, with the goal of eliminating them in favor of his boss who was a competing instructor.
    6. After this incident, the "RSO" was reprimanded by the County and told not to go near me again.

    • @Rocketman9mm
      @Rocketman9mm 4 года назад +568

you to RSO: "No, I didn't. No."

You to other dude who just said you were signed in: "Of course I am."
Which is it man? Even if the RSO was wrong, he was professional up until you came at him with attitude giving him commands with a dismissive attitude and calling him an idiot. Maybe he did have an agenda but you can't act all innocent that this exchange went south.

Update: This was a request by these young people to try different guns prior to possible purchase at the gun store, which I do often, at various local ranges. The RO in orange has a history of harassing other instructors at this public range because they represent competition for the "connected" officers there. RO already knew that I was on an annual pass as he had done the same kind of harassment on me on two earlier occasions. Anyway, this RO was reprimanded by the County and was directed to never have any contact with me again. This is not a friendly range.

"Nah, you people think you can just take over whatever you want without asking!" Guy ended up complaining to my buddy running the event AND the RSO. Both asked where his gear was if the bench was completely open and he said "Well, I'm just watching my son" (who was on the next bench) XD

There was one guy, British dude, who had a habit of making you feel like an idiot for honest questions. Mostly when I started shooting. It was honestly kinda frustrating. Like my guy, I'm new to the hobby. I barely know what I'm doing beyond the basic safety stuff. I'm sorry I'm not as knowledgeable about the use and operation of firearms. New spot only does one clay at a time. I go to my spot, start loading and the RSO very quickly starts berating me. The whole time my finger is off the trigger, the safety is on, and the gun is pointed in a safe direction. I let him finish, told him it wouldnt be a problem again and went about my rounds. As I was packing up I talked to him about it and let him know that the way he reacted came off as a little harsh and that since I wasnt doing anything unsafe, maybe a calmer approach would work better. He admitted to being stressed out and being irritated at people not actually reading the rules prior to shooting(there was no rule about 1-round or semi-autos in anything I saw posted and I didnt sign anything.) I told him I'm big on safety but sometimes etiquette has to be learned. His job determines how they learn that. We shook hands at the end of our talk. I've seen him since and made small talk, all is well. Got back from my range today about an hour ago, there is always one cranky pissed of person there. First thing you learn when you own a firearm or go to any range is that anyone at any point can call a ceasefire. We had been shooting for about an hour and I wanted to call a ceasefire to pull in my targets, the RO was not there so I went down the row of shooters calling for a ceasefire, everyone agreed, opened their bolts, unloaded their firearms, then the RO comes down and yells at me telling me I don't have the power to call a ceasefire and I need to follow rules... He gets mad and tells me to go exchange them, I tell HIM to go do it because HE'S the one with the company credit card. He yells and gets all up in my face and puts his fists up yelling "Come on!" I laughed in his face! He was 57 years old, 160 pounds and I was 23, 220 pounds and carried our 40 ft ladders and shingles around daily. I could literally break him in half if I wanted to. Told him I wouldn't fight him cause I'd paralyze him and go to prison for 10 years, he was PISSED. He then went to call our general manager and snitch on me and tell him every dirty thing I had ever said about him. Thought I could trust that guy. They forced me to quit.... Reminds me of this one ole grump at my local range that and at the 2019 CMP national championships for 10meter sporter class air rifle they told my gf that her trigger pull weight was just on the edge of disqualification (we don’t own these rifles they’re provided by the team we never make adjustments to the trigger group or valves) they also told me that my vans (not high tops covered my ankles to much and that I would be dq if I didn’t tape them down they also told me and my gf that we would be disqualified if they caught our eyelashes touching our rear sight hood again and then told my coach to go back to the stands after I was having a quick and quiet conversation with him after I completed all shots in that position while a father of a kid from the team next to us was going up and coaching all the kids on that team while they were still shooting people like this have no place in the modern shooting community old fudds are scaring away new shooters it’s sad 😞

Air rifle and smallbore competitions have some extensive and strict rules. If you were are the National Championships the "Old Grump" was doing you a favor by just informing you of the rules. He was right to inform you that you were risking disqualification by not following those rules. He might have been a Grump, but he was right.

Guys like this are the reason a lot of young people dont go to ranges. I use to go to a range near the coast in North Carolina with my grandfather, but one particular time we had issues with a older gentleman around 65 to 70. He came up to our lane wearing his Vietnam vet hat and asked what we were shooting. My grandfather responded "just checking the zero on my 22-250. Then he asked me and i said "oh i just bought this browning x bolt hells canyon 6.5 prc and im zeroing it at 200 for now. He responded with "a 6.5 prc??" No you mean a 6.5 creedmoor! I said no and PRC and of course he was getting frustrated and told me you dont even know what the hell you are shooting with! Ill be telling the range owner that you shouldnt be shooting. Range owner comes over 5 minutes after and says "keith tells me you have a creedmoor and you are trying to put another caliber ammo in it. He of course was good when i told him i had a PRC not a creedmoor and the man seemed to not no what it was being that its a new round. Im fortunate enough now that i built my own range and dont have to deal with people now.

+action RSOs aren't just RSOs. They are also employees and that includes basic loss prevention. Someone stealing range time is just as bad as stealing something off the shelf. Now this RSO handled it VERY badly, but was still doing his job up until that point.

One time me and a few friends hit the range for a bachelor party. I brought my AR-15 and so did another guy from our group.
We set up next to each other and started shooting at different intervals and the RSO thought it was one gun doing “rapid fire”.
We tried to explain that he heard 2 rifles going off consecutively, but he just replied “Do you want to get kicked off the range?”
So, we let him win that one.
Another guy with us had a Desert Eagle .50.
So later on when the commence fire was called and the RSO hadn’t replaced his ear pro, we ripped off a few rounds off that beast.
All in all, Good RSO’s are great.
Bad RSO’s ruin a good time.
