I've approached other shooters - to ask for advice - three times. All were glad to help. As a hapless novice I asked a young woman crack shooter next to me to try my new Glock 19, thinking my problems were the gun. She was a Detroit cop. Hit all bullseyes, and then gave me a 3 minute tutorial. Huge immediate improvement.

I'm becoming the "I genuinely want to know how to shoot type." So a forever student type. I finally get it. I go in for reps, making every shot count. Try to expose myself to firing around other gunfire, not flinching, not blinking, and finally -- making the gun an extension of my being. That last part is the fun part, it creates a real relationship between you and the firearm. All of that is just reps over time.

Here in Ohio we have ODNR(Ohio Department of Natural Resources) outdoor gun ranges. The one in Spring Valley Ohio just south of Xenia has been remodeled and is really nice. The Range Safety Officers are actually Ohio Wildlife Officers who are in fact law enforcement officers. Everyone was really nice and the RSOs were to. I think they are open year round, but the range fee is only 5 dollars for the whole day, 25 dollars for a yearly membership(which you can get at any Rural King gun counter) and you have to bring your own ammo and targets. They have pistol, shotgun, rifle, and even an archery range where you can try out your bows and arrows. If you are ever in Ohio come on over and check them out. Really nice people, and a really nice range. Plus, outdoor ranges are more fun and not as loud as an indoor range which I like as well.

Im a new shooter and I've only been to the range a few times. It was always my understanding that you just dont approach random people and speak with them while at the stalls. Its hard to hear, and people are working on their own form of training. I've never had anyone approach me at a stall and I didnt know people did that until I saw videos like this. Personally, I wouldnt take it well if someone tapped on my shoulder and tried to strike up a conversation with me while I'm there at a stall. I think it just breaks natural range etiquette.

No one is there so I avoid all the crazy and i actually enjoy shooting in a range by myself with no distractions. Mid week, end of the week and weekends I save for training, coaching and/or classes. That gives me a chance to practice what ive learned on monday and Tuesday by myself without anyone trying to screw up what I've learned and I go back to my instructor and he is impressed that I mastered what he taught me the week before. A South Dakota 100 meter outdoor range with my son when a couple of tweens showed and started shooting skeet over our line. We packed to leave and only asked them to stop and secure their guns while I recovered our targets. My then 12yo son schooled them. Being cocky they offered a shotgun to my son, he correctly held the pump and dropped his first ever three clay pigeons. The tweens were more impressed and inquisitive when my son told them of their incorrect posture and holding techniques he'd learned from the book "Tap's Tips".

I’ve found that the “Safety Violator” exist more at the indoor ranges than at the outdoor ranges. When beside people like him, it becomes what I’ve come to call the “shoot and duck” time. You shoot but then have to duck because you realized the novice shooter next to you has placed you at the end of their barreI. I can’t tell you how many times I have been at indoor ranges that I have also become the trainer for those who have NEVER picked up a weapon until that day. It’s easy for me because of my 60+ years of gun experience. Those who run the ranges need to start asking shooters about their shooting experience. If they are not experienced, then off to at least an hour of training they go. Great video as usual, Colion.

I was at the gun shop range and a guy who was talking to me earlier about misfire issues on it was walking cross the range with his finger on the trigger while working the slide. I tried to remain calm but lost my shit. When i got him/gun in a safe direction, he set it down. there was a live round in the barrel with a dented primer. Dumb luck but who knows where that round MAY have gone.

I nicely let him know ABSOLUTELY NOT as i think sir that might be extremely dangerous as you could get nailed with a ricochet . I was in shock that he even asked. he brought his AR-15 and some nice hand guns to impress the girl he was with but no experienced range shooter would ever think to go underneath INTO the FN Range area to retrieve their target . I was at my local range and was flicking empty casing to the ground and like a idiot flicked my empty magazine into the range shooting area. It was a full day that day and I told the range guys but we agreed it was way to busy and that theyll retrieve at the end of the day ( theyre trust worthy ) and thats what we did. Didn’t want to do a seize fire and fuck up everyones elses range day cause I’m a moron. It was a HK Mag too those fuckers aint cheap either . If I go to an indoor range, I mind my own business, take my time, and quietly pack up and leave when I'm done. If I see someone with a gun I'm interested in, I might politely ask about it, but never ask to shoot it or even hold it, and keep the conversation as short as possible. I’m usually the same way. I don’t feel comfortable asking to shoot peoples guns, and I will admit a large part of it is my introverted personality, but I was at the range a while back and the dude in the lane next to me had an M1 Garand. That’s the only exception I ever made. I had to ask, I just had to, I might not ever come across one of those again. The second thing I would never do is fire a full mag, or in this case, a clip. I asked for permission to do this because not only can I not pass up the chance to shoot one of these rifles, but I couldn’t pass up the chance to get that sexy ping on the last shot. I even offered to pay the guy a bit for the eight rounds of 30-06 which he adamantly refused. Overall, it was a great experience, and he was very generous, and I, a grown man was practically suppressing giggles and grinning ear to ear like I was five years old and it was Christmas morning

My son turns 15 tomorrow 12/9...Im a USAF SP veteran and I started working with my son on firearms training when he was just 3. I started with taking the mystery out of guns, I focused on safety, safety and yes MORE safety. How serious of an instrument a firearm is. He learned how to take them apart, clean, oil and assemble. We worked with snap-caps and troubleshooting every possible failure situation with them. Then at about age 5-6 we worked with a Co2 pellet firearm...and yes we treated it just like a traditional firearm that fired actual rounds. At 7 he finally made it to the range for live fire for the first time with the custom Ruger 10/22 we started building a couple of years before. Fast forward eight more years and he is rock solid, focused and safety aware..I often get complements at the range on how he acts. He is proficient in many platforms we own and he helped me train his little sister who is 2 years younger when she showed interest in the sport. He was even man-enough to admit that she is more of a 'natural' shooter than he is [was at the same age]. That shows humility that a lot of us adults dont have. I'm proud of him and despite being in his teen years we are still close; though I currently only get one-word answers out of him which is odd b/c just a few years ago this kid would talk your ear off...

I then put the mags (G19) behind my back and mix them up.
I put the extra mags in various places, such as my mag holsters and front pocket, in the ready position.
So I'm shooting and dropping mags on the floor when the SRO comes up, looks at me and said, "Oh! It's you! How's the shooting?"
I said, "Good, I'm just practicing quick mag changes."
He looks at me and says, "I figured, but another shooter complained because he said you were dropping magazines on the floor. I KNOW you're a safe shooter, so no worries."

You forgot the “Casual Enthusiast Guy”
The guy who goes to the range every once in a while to practice/blow off some steam. The Casual Enthusiast Guy may sometimes come across as some of the 7 types you named (primarily the hipster or the CISIG), but is normally either much more knowledgeable or much more humble. The CEG is a normal human who just likes guns, and likes shooting. He likes ranges and the people who frequent them. He is usually knowledgeable about the guns he owns, and is willing to learn more about the guns he is unfamiliar with. He is normally an average to above average shooter, yet is strangely casual about the whole deal. You can safely ask them if they want to shoot your gun and they’ll almost always either ask you how many rounds they can shoot, and/or offer a mag of theirs in return.
The CEG is cool. Everyone needs to be more like the Casual Enthusiast Guy.

I’ve never suggested a video topic before but one on Range Officer personality’s would be cool, having said that I know how important they are and how it can be a tough job.

Andrew Greenewald I would say I fall into this personality except I don’t really talk to anybody when I’m there unless I’m with somebody then I talk to them and I would also never ask to shoot another persons gun. I also have the desire to be more than just an enthusiast and shoot like once a week but I don’t have the dough to do that. I would also love to take some tactical and or training classes but again don’t have the money for that. I guess I’m the Casual enthusiast guy that wants to be more.

I have seen every single one of these in the first week, being an RSO for a company that encourages new firearm users to go to a range without any sort of educations besides a waiver and safety instructions on the wall. By the time they read that, they already committed a violation that could've killed me or someone else

I like to call those range tyrants. They often times end up being the ass holes who work there. They enforce arbitrary "rules" like no rapid firing even though there is no safety concern with shooting fast. If professionals can do it so can enthusiasts.

    • @ArmaGuyz
      @ArmaGuyz 4 года назад +7

@@kyleparker5564 MR RAPID FIRE WE FOUND YOU. lol There is a VERY GOOD REASON FOR NO RAPID FIRE. YOU SAID THERE IS NO SAFTY CONCERN WELL THERE IS.
Your own. If you fire too quickly youll never a hear a squib and a squib can destroy the gun and severely injure and or even kill you much less someone else when the gun fragments. If you are pulling the trigger so quickly you cant even tell the differences in the sound of a shot youre a danger. Thats why there are public ranges and tactical ranges and thats why on Tactical ranges they dont just allow any old gun or ammo much less holster. They know they are going to be shooting fast and accidents can occur so the standards are different. They know the Squib isnt common sure however you are ONE SHOOTER... They have hundreds of people come in and so the chance of a squib dramatically increases on their range.
They do not want to be sued or held liable for allowing people to rapidly fire their pistol and potentially cause severe harm or death that is going to be ON THE NEWS if someone dies and reflect BADLY on the range and the shooting community in general. Consider if you owned your own range and had incidents occur at it what your stance would be if you were sued by the family of the injured or dead man for allowing unsafe rapid firing increasing chances of incidence? Not only this but its a public range people are trying to learn... They dont want have to listen to someone act like they are in a gun fight right next to them while they are just trying to understand the basics. If you want to rapid fire and you arent worried about safety or how others feel about it by all means shoot on your own land or a place that allows is my advice. Now do you get it? Hope that puts it into perspective.
