  • A range is a safe environment to practice with your firearm! In this #GUNSMARTS video, Ken Scott will explain what to do when you take your first trip to a range.
    Make sure to always follow the four rules of firearms safety at all times:
    1. Always point your firearm is a safe direction.
    2. Always treat your firearm as if it is loaded, even if it is unloaded.
    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to fire.
    4. Know your target and what's behind it.

    The outdoor range I go to has a range master and a couple of assistants that call the cease fire about once an hour. It has about 50 shooting lanes.

    Hey Ken, you have presented an EXCELLENT video. All new shooters should view this video multiple times, for there is a lot of very good information. All experienced shooters should periodically view the video as a refresher course and that we do not begin to fall into a bad habit. Thanks Ken!

    I stopped going to indoor ranges primarily for safety reasons after a few bad experiences at the big “nice” gun shop and range in my city. My first bad experience was when the ammo I was made to buy there (they do not allow outside ammo at this range, you have to buy theirs when you arrive) failed to fire about 1 out of every 3 or 4 rounds from my mossberg 500. I bought that gun when I was 18, I’ve had it for a decade now, it has never failed to fire a round before or after that experience. The RSO even noticed I was having problems and identified that the primers were set at different levels resulting in light strikes and failure to fire situations. The RSO then escorted me to the counter, where the counter guys told me to clean my gun and refused an exchange. I had already cleaned my guns before arriving but even if I hadn’t, it’s a mossberg 500. On my next trip to this particular indoor range, the crowd that was there was full of reckless shooters high-sticking their rifles while hopping between lanes and yelling while mag dumping their targets. My friends and I had paid for multiple lanes, and while shooting we noticed a definite bullet hole in a lane divider. We finished our session but I realized at that point that this was not a room that I felt safe in and after that I started shooting exclusively on private property. My advice would be to get the training to shoot safely, and don’t put yourself in places where people that might put you at risk will also be shooting.

      I agree with all your concerns. I would never go back there to that range for those reasons. If a range forces me to buy their ammo, it's a no-go. If the RSO isn't there to stop reckless behavior, or not even present to stop reckless behavior, I'm out. You did well. Find another range to safely practice your skills. Good luck and stay vigilant 🇺🇸

      No outside ammo is crazy what if you're shooting a gun that uses uncommon ammo(like .32-20 or 7.65 Luger for example)

Your video explains a lot appreciate it. A lot has to do with wanting to be safe where others feel and are safe around me. Again very good video.

    Something happened on an outdoor range I was shooting at that bothered me. The guy next to me had a revolver with the cylinder out and was looking down the barrel... the hole where the bullet exits the gun. Then he kind of waved it and for a few moments it was pointed in my direction. I don't think he did this on purpose and I don't think he knew I was watching him. He was looking at the gun the whole time. I know it can't fire with the cylinder out but it still made me feel uncomfortable because I wasn't sure if he had good knowledge of safe handling of guns. I left the range early because of him and I didn't mention it to the man in charge of the range or any of his helpers. I probably should have but I thought this was a borderline kind of thing and if I made the guy mad I certainly wouldn't want to be shooting next to him. Any thoughts?

    • @Newberntrains
      @Newberntrains 2 года назад +4

      its never good to look down the muzzle of any firearm (the part where the bullet exits) i keep flexible cleaning rods in all my cases for this purpose to check for obstructions if i get a soft shot usually you can field strip and run a rod down from the muzzle to clear the barrel

      The best thing to do in situations like this is to let the Range Safety Officer (RSO) know what is going on. If you don't and you leave, you may be safe but someone else may pay the price for the negligence of the fool mishandling the firearm. Good and responsible gun owners have an obligation to help other good & responsible gun owners keep their reputation clean. The a-holes that shouldn't act like they do need to be told to shape up or leave the range. You shouldn't need to cut short you time because of them.

      @@JackRainfield All of us learn because at first we don't want to piss off a jackass with a gun. Later we realize that they make a great day at the range a bad day for all of us. I have seen seriously bad things happen because some fool had a "gat" he wanted to show off... I hope you do enjoy your range days...

  • @atcair33
    @atcair33 Год назад

    I have to add one thing about an outdoor range. Not everyone can just call ceasefire. If you're shooting on an outdoor range and you just call ceasefire when you want to change your targets, you're going to piss everybody off at the range. Usually with an outdoor range they have periods where the range is cold so that people can change their targets. If they allowed each person to call ceasefire whenever they wanted to change their targets, nobody would be able to shoot the entire time you're there. Some people want to change targets after five shots, some people want to change targets after 50 shots. Imagine a firing line of 10 or 12 shooters and each person calls ceasefire when they want to change their targets.... It would be absolute chaos.
    If you're going to an outdoor range for the first time ask the range master or any person that is the range safety officer to explain to you how targets are changed, when you can change targets and how the range works. Then you'll know exactly how to change targets.
    But if you don't think I'm right just go to an outdoor range and scream ceasefire whenever you feel like it. Come back and let us know what happened.

    Sorry everybody of internet but my opinion on these safety range videos on RUclips have different teaching not saying they are bad but each person should take notes so you know what yall been taught and listening to these videos. If what you been doing growing up by certified instructor was the way its done then do that. Again sorry if this is not cool. I do apologize to each one and i notice on a lots of these gun videos and safety videos that as these people are teaching safety i notice that there is a red flag right away and that is the camera operator who is not behind the person teach people safety on the range.hicok45 video shows what you should do on a range and what not to do so check his video out for further info and last but not lease people should alway use a rubber training gun that is not shootable when teach proper fire arm and range safety so that the camera operator will feel safe knowing there not in the line of fire even if the gun is not loaded safety first,i know everyone want to make there own video but it scares me when i watch these videos and know some one is not taught proper safety.Thank you and god bless.
