A couple months out of open-heart and you're out rock-hounding with the wife on a sunny day, on that beautiful river .... my hat's off to you, sir!! 😅 I was also a slow healer, and just getting up the river bank would have been a minor miracle - not including the trek to/from the truck, mosquitos/biting flies/gnats AND a backpack full of rocks .... amazing job, my friend. I can't think of many sounds more soothing to refresh body & soul than that river.
As always, you do such a good job of teaching as you explore. I have a teenage daughter who's drawn to geology, especially looking for/identifying minerals & crystals. University is a ways off yet, but whether or not this love of exploration results in a career choice or not, you've shown how the wonders of discovering the world around us and educating yourself to enable you to dig even deeper, doesn't have to be a profession to enrich your life. We live in beautiful Atlantic Canada, so the formations here are quite tame and weathered down.
We send your videos back and forth and appreciate the positivity you show of doing something you enjoy, in an environment you love all while educating us with the experiences you share (good, bad AND ugly!). Once again, excellent video. Love from NB! 🇨🇦

Hi, just happened to come by your video through RUclips algorithm. I live in eastern Taiwan and we can find jade, black jade, and (lots of) serpentine in the creeks here, just not as big because they were rolled down from the mountains. Taiwan used to be the no.1 export country of jades in the 70s and 80s, but large scale harvest no longer exist since the price dropped significantly and it’s much cheaper to harvest in Russia.

A lot of people think you can only find it in and around Big Sur in California. I did for a long time too. I guess bigger pieces would more typically be found there, but for pebble-sized, or the size of a quarter to 50 cent piece it can be found much further south. The ocean current is one powerful force and I'm pretty sure I've found jade at Morro Bay, Montana de Oro, Cambria, etc. -- all of the towns through there have it at the beaches. Hard to spot, but super fun to find.
So many cool things to find on California beaches. Agates, jasper, volcanic rock, moonstone, jade, petrified wood, sea glass, abalone shells, sand dollars, etc. I guess you could find sharks teeth, but they're very rare through there if at all.

I've been through so much stone and rock over the years... I've seen rocks just like these! Most I have seen are amongst riverjacks used for stone washes in gardens and landscape. I have actually broken one on job yesterday just like that mottled jade... Ihad a few like tgat iver the last 10 yeats or so.. they ways have a seem that breaks and im always like thats so pretty and i toss it behind a wall and cover it in mortar LOL. No longer will I toss pretty stones away... i did find a HUGE hunk of smokey and milky quartz on a job that is sitting to this day on my "rock ledge" (window sill in sunroom) I'm gonna have to pay more attention from now on. I'm so glad I decided to watch your show... I get that ping sound way more than I realized till now... 20 minutes of your videos and I'm already at the next level of "gemstone awareness"... hell I only thought Jade was in China..

We use alot of riverjacks! They call them Delaware River jacks but they come from all over the country... wherever they have access and do any river flow mitigation work...alot of government contracts (from what I was told). They keep some to serve needs if the projects and sell the rest to stone yards and landscape supply yards. Only downside is most is in that 1 to 6" size range. This does however explain why at Badolato stone there us always several buckest of stones and a pile if broken up stuff on the other side of the concrete divider. You think if I find one of those dark rocks in a state park by the river they'd come after me for breaking it &/or bringing it home? Lol. I'm on a new mission this spring!

Hello Dan, your videos are absolulty amazing. Thank you for your time and effort, thry full of great knowledge i just seen on your other video your extremely busy and dont have time to respond to most comments but if you could please take a few moments id like to maybe send you a few pictures of potential jade i found by prince george. Most of the stuff i find reminds me more of your modled jade but with out so much of the outer layer and is way lighter in color. I dont have a stone cutter or scratch kit as of yet but will be getting one soon. Lol the last 8 or 9 years people have called me crazy for thinking its jade, the best identification i could come up with it besides jade would be a almost adventurine, but would lean way more towards green quartzite or just really cool green stones. Now that ive watched this video a few times you made me really second guessing my thoughts so ive gone through a few of my samples that i have easy access. Now i have come up with more uncertainties about some of them some of my samples. Ive hit a few of them with a hammer and broke some of them. Now when it comes to hitting some with a hammer they wont break or crack but will just knock a little tiny chip off at most, would jade do that? Also thank you for all of the amazing information, I love watching and learning from your videos. Very cool stuff and i look forward to learning more from your videos.

I love it! There was this character in a book by Loyd Alexander, he survived on just finding stuff to eat and build stuff with, fed his family etc.. This is what Dan does! Great Job Dan! I love your vids, I learn something every time I watch one.

Almost 50 years ago I was exploring streams in the “mountains” of Alabama. I came across a, area of concentrated green rocks. I was certain I had found a pocket of jade (and had no idea that jade in Alabama was extremely unlikely). Carried out two 5gallon buckets of this “treasure” and took them home to my college roommate who was a geology major. He took it to a professor who rendered a learned determination as to the “value” of my “treasure”. “Industrial slag” he said. “Worthless”.😟
Glad YOU are finding the real thing!

@@andriyshapovalov8886 😆 No, he left that sad duty up to me. While I was in university at the time I was still young and apparently at least a little naive. On closer examination and a little research I became a little LESS naive and realized he was correct. It was truly a glass-like slag. My youthful naïveté made me want very much for it to be at LEAST semi-precious, if not wildly valuable. In a way this growth proved valuable to me later in life when I took up gold prospecting. The “jade” experience probably kept me from lugging large quantities of mica around trying to believe it was gold…

    • @ssteele1812
      @ssteele1812 3 года назад

Nowadays, even slag is useful to lapidary artists. As long as it's pretty we will cut is and polish it. Look up Leland Blue from Michigan.

@@ssteele1812 it truly looked just like the jade jewelry purchased a few years earlier in the Bahamas. I'm sure it would have made some interesting consume jewelry. Of course, that "discovery" was almost 50 years ago, so it is LONG gone.🙂

    Hi Dan
    Thanks for the great videos!
My grandpa and his brother left the family farm in Saskatchewan for gold in BC for two years. The color was really good at Spences Bridge but trapped in sticky clay so they landed on a bar south of Lillooet and shoveled sand and bucketed water until they could afford a pump. They took logs from the river and built a tiny cabin into the bank for the ground heat. For two years they worked by a big green boulder that had impressed them with its texture. Much later, a picture in the newspaper appeared with a fellow who knew what it was posing by his rock!
I love to see the ornamental stones on the saw
