I know everyone has a story but... In 1989 I was in Germany on build up training prior to BATUS. We were tasked at night to set up an ambush and wait for the very well aware "enemy" from our Sqn. So we set up and wait and wait. As usual after a couple of hours we get passed down "it's a go, they're here". We heard them slowly make they way down the track. I remember thinking "I thought there would only be a few of them" as they streamed past from left to right. We had GPMG cut off group and he would start it off when they were in the kill zone. The gimpy started, and we started... Suddenly 120 heavily armed german paratroopers started engaging the 8 of us before engaging in what would have been a bayonet charge at us. We were overun and actually taken prisoner and not released for over an hour cos they thought we were there for them...
@@iesbiangaming Yeah, exactly my point because even though you are trained to do it, being bothered to actually do it and take it seriously is another matter. If people think a training exercise is over, some of them will just switch off, that's just what happens for some people no matter how much they are trained, so I mean that even though they should respond like they did, it's good to see that they actually did. Bit long winded and ranty, I know, but I've seen a video where troops were training to respond to ambushing while driving in convoys and the video was shot from the ambusher perspective and despite the fact the two gunners on top of the vehicle would have been shot dead in the first couple of seconds in real life, they still failed to make any kind of effort to respond with fire, and even when they did you could see they weren't bothering to aim anywhere near the enemy. This unfortunately is the natural laziness that some people have, where if they know something isn't real then they won't bother taking it seriously.
That was standard behaviour in german military after the first day in field training. We got shot at with blanks constantly, during lunch, during marching, during sleeping, on patrol, to a point where I was in our MG encampment and had the order to report any movement and open fire at everything inside 100m. There was a paratrooper officer training in the same area and they drove a jeep directly in front of me on a field way 30m in front of me from left to right and I saw my opportunity for revenge on all the ambushes =). My buddy reported the jeep and I opend fire at 100m. Those paratroopers where mighty pissed and needed a new pair of trousers.
