- Punishing a Brand New Car in the World's Oldest (Cheapest!) Motorsport // Lands End Trial Part 1. In this episode Jonny Smith convinces Kia to let him take a brand new Picanto GT Line on the Landsend Trial. This may be the most cost effective motorsport left, but it's definitely not the mildest. The trial was designed over 100 years ago to prove the robustness and reliability of new motorcycles. Then cars started entering. 2024 marked the 100th running event, so Jonny wanted to see if a new car could handle the punishment.

The mighty cant 🎉🎉
Thank you! Cant in Welsh means 100....its the 100th Lands end Trial so, y'know, there's method to the silliness.
Part 2 comes out this Thurs and Part 3 (the big event itself - over 24hrs of competition) drops next Sunday.
@@TheLateBrakeShow can't wait, from the podcast it sounds like an absolute riot
@@TheLateBrakeShow Why not use Jimmy?

Four wheel drive maybe.
The fact that Kia seems to be involved is awesome, kudos to them! (and to Jonny for another spectacular series, obviously)
This really is better than anything TV is showing these days. Well done TLBS team 👌
💡😁
Well done, Kia, for allowing this crazy scheme!
So chuffed you've done this, Jonny. And pleased the Patreon supporters have been able to chip in a few bob to help. What an adventure!
Thank you for supporting. The good news is that we think Kia are keeping the car in their safe dungeon, meaning it might be allowed to get used by others for events. In other words it won't get sold (because it can't) or crushed.
@@TheLateBrakeShowthis is gold for Kia marketing. Hope they appreciate your work!
I loved your Fifth Gear episodes doing both of the trials when I was a child, they were some of my favorites, along with running the red W124 on chip fat. All these years later and here we are again, long live the Car Pervert!
You are making me feel old!
As a Kia technician, we’ll done for not getting anything with a 1.6 crdi, I believe the camera/radar for the LKA & AEB (lane keep assist and accident emergency braking) is above the centre mirror on the windscreen, if you pull the headliner down you’ll see a few plugs. If you un plug them you’ll have a light in the dash but they won’t bother you again. Ask me how I know😂
Looking forward to this series 🤙
What Kia engines are best? Just for my own knowledge. Ta
@@Grantly avoid the 1.6 crdi at all costs, mhev and the normal diesel ones, the oil pump clogs and starves the engine of oil then it poo’s its pants (there’s a recall for it now), also the hybrid ones, the alternator is a motor, they jault the crank then cam and crank spins freely and they explode, (there’s also a recall for that) the heads are also pretty weak on them too I’ve had to rebuild a head on one before, new valves etc.
My favourite is probably the 1.5 turbo petrol,
and for something small like a picanto or a rio the 1.0 turbos are also pretty good.
The petrol engines suffer with coil pack issues though, but get it serviced by a dealer and it’ll be covered by warranty for 7 years
@@Grantly the 2.2 disel in the sorentos and stingers are also pretty good too, very pokey
@@jacobkear9527 I am stuck with a 2007 Picanto 1.0 petrol, for the most part is ok and does what it should do, but when it becomes damp outside the car sputters/misfires, a mechanic replaced the ignition pack last year and all has been great, until recently it has started to do it again!
You’re not allowed to use a diesel in Trials! Haha
For those asking. Those are the Cregennen Lakes above Dolgellau in Wales. Yes a truly stunning place. Southern Snowdonia below Cader Idris. The north gets most of the attention but if you want stunning scenery away from the crowds its the place.
Thought it looked familiar... Thanks :)
The opening scene is spectacular.
No way! I saw you guys go past me on the A395 near Launceston I think! I was watching all the weird off-road cars go by with great interest and the yellow Picanto struck me as an odd choice for what seemed to be an off-road race (all the cars were filthy)! Can't say I noticed it was Jonny behind the wheel, but hey! Will be watching this series with great interest.
😎👌🏾
@@TheLateBrakeShow A dim memory has returned to me - I actually saw Jonny sat in the driver's seat and thought "that guy looks a bit like like Jonny Smith, except for those glasses" and thought nothing more of it until now. 😶
I always enjoy seeing 'Side burn Jonny' offof the noughties!
No one needs an SUV. We once did something similar in a rented Clio in the late ‘90s. It only took about 3 days of jet washing to get it clean
Ha! I won't tell if you don't...
This is going to be fun, give the car a proper Viking funeral. You're a shoe-in to win the Picanto class.
I used to own a Kia Picanto, and memories of driving it are some of the fondest I have behind a wheel. Excellent car.
I dont drive or like cars but I still watch TLBS! 😂
This is the best compliment we could wish for. Thank you. 👍🏽
Eagly anticipated Cant’s Quest
So impressed that Kia gave you the car to do this 👍
They've got a stellar reputation here in Australia....
I really enjoyed watching your previous two attempts with Tom & Tiff 🤣
Cheers v much. I think you will enjoy how the little Cant performs...
Exciting stuff! We ordinary folk get a look at the 'legal' tweaks that need to be made to turn a showroom car into a specialized rally car.
Sounds epic Jonny look forward to,seeing this develop and unfold 😊 Pete
The Late Brake Show, You're the best! I subscribed because I love your content!
Thank you so much. Welcome aboard TLBS
Looking forward to the next parts, who else thinks Jonny looks like a football manager with his new glasses and gillet?
I'd be shit at footie management, largely because I don't know anything about football.
@@TheLateBrakeShowperfect when can you start…
New camera? Quality of the exterior shots at the start are absolutely SUPERB. Sharpness, colours, everything. Proper quality.
This'll be ace, it already is. Full marks to Kia for encouraging such shenanigans.
Awesome. Fond memories of doing the Lands End trial with my late Dad (barnfind Escort Mexico episode) in an orange and cream beetle, we got a gold medal to boot (early 90s I think) Also remember hallucinating as a result of sleep deprivation. Can’t beat the smell of mud baking on an exhaust pipe though.
This is going to be great to watch as it all unfolds.
Sion Ellis !!!! a top guy and very knowledgeable 👍👍
in Portugal and Spain there is a Kia Picanto Rally and GT Cup, they are really nice cars
Is there??
That sounds cool as hell!
Lovely of Kia to chuck you a pre-made cube
Jonny, that is inspired! I'm not really a front wheel drive, modern car fan, but, I totally get this! Looking forward to the next one. :)
Cheers v much. Part 2 out on Thurs
This is awesome Jonny. Nobody else does this sort of thing. I’m so looking forward to following this adventure. Thanks for the great content.
Really looking forward to part 2. Looking to be a real adventure can't wait.
I had the chance to drive the last gen picanto..for a few days. I think i smiled the whole time, it‘s such a cool car for it‘s size.
Yes, please! Absolutely looking forward to this! Brilliant idea!
In the 1980s I did the Lands End Trial in a bog standard 2CV. In those day,s a Standard Production car was suitible as the sections were nothing like as rough and the cars were higher. Also completion insurance could be bought for about a fiver.
Yes , I pressed my 2CV into tackling the Exeter Trial, in the 80s. Of course it rained, and the miles covered from Yorkshire and back, in 30 odd hours. Exhausting!!!! The car shrugged it off!!!!!
Are you going to have FUN! Looking forward to the series. Hope you don’t kill too many cameras.
Probably the hardest thing we've ever had to film (the event that is)
So excited to see how the little ‘cant’ performs Jonny. What a great last hoorah for a poor little car destined for the crusher!!!
Excellent! Nobody else would have this non mainstream and very car centric content. Very wood through the trees, thanks Mr Smith 👍
That's a pretty smart and cheeky supermini. Inside is nice, and seems a bit fun with a manual. Can't wait to see where this story goes!
Great idea. Looking forward to seeing it.
Back To The Future reference there, "Where we're going we won't need airbags".
Another wonderful video guys, looking forward to this series.
Was great seeing you on the Landsend trial, we were in Class 8 and sat a few cars behind you at Eddies Branchline and were so impressed at where that Cant was going! Thanks for raising the profile of this motorsport.
Going be a cheeky sod,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Can I have the front seats after.😁😁🤣
Awesome! Looking forward to the series!
Its funny, I live in Brigwater and would randomly see modified Jimmeys and mg's with race numbers wondering where they are going. This answers this. :) Good luck mate.
This looks great! Hopefully you work all The Kinks out so you'll be LA71YNG on a sunny afternoon.
As much as I am looking forward to the next part, I can't help but feel it is pretty strange that cars like this has to be crushed. Surely, there must be lot's of parts in pre-series cars that could be re-used in other cars? Anyway - As I said, very much looking forward to see how the Picanto tackle the obstacles in the trail - and how you go about transforming a modern car like this into a trial car.
What fantastic concept. This is going to be great.
That has to be the most arduous London to Brian yet
They really have got the hang of hiding in some inaccessible places !
#London2Brian
Brilliant, looking forward to the next parts
Awesome!! Looking forward to more episodes on the build
This series is going to be amazing 😍😍
Great idea! Absolutely love these picanto’s. I’ve got a smart 451 turbo that’s been modded. Micro turbo hatches are brilliant
You Cant merch needed!! This series is gonna be epic… thanks for the treat Jonny 🎉
This is going to be epic! Love it.
This was great Jonny, love the little cant too! looking forward to the next episode very much, nice one, thank you.
Can’t wait for the rest of this series!
Really looking forward to the next one. I’d love to do this to a car and it is sad to see pre-production cars scrapped! Glad you are giving one a glorious send off!
Always loving ya old skool footware
Hi Jonny - as a relative newbie to the Lands end trial myself and originally our first brave or daft attempt 2 years ago in a 6 year old Fiat Panda I felt your pain ! Now were in an X90 which I have mildly modified, I really enjoyed these videos - Very entertaining and informative - so refreshing to see budget motoring rather than BMW this Mercedes that etc etc - keep up the good work guys💯%
this is a really cool series! very cool, will watch all these!
This is going to be a fascinating build 👌
This is going to be great fun Jonny
Loved it, bring it on !!!
I didn’t realise the piccanto was so heavy, must’ve been close to double our AX at the start line
#241
I was surprised too. My Suzuki Swift Sport is about the same weight with a 4 cyl 1.6.
@@zknarc Crash an AX or a swift sport into a tree at 30mph and compare the outcome to doing the same with the picanto. Lightweight is fun, but making a lightweight car safe isn’t cheap when you’ve gotta cram airbags in, which is why most small cars are heavier now.
@@Jonathan_Doe_ My Swift Sport is 2007. It definitely has airbags!
Yh well aware that our AX is flimsy as hell haha
Just shows how much thing’s like heated steering wheels and AC adds up, and the bobywork’s the light bit. The Piccanto’s basically the same weight as a ford focus and that’s a considerably bigger car.
Love it, great fun!
Brilliant concept!
Really looking forward to this project
Thanks for this, Jonny! We don't get the Picanto in the U.S., but I rented one in Israel in 2019 and was astonished by how much interior room it had.
This is going to be an epic series. I didn't realise it was in parts and I was still excited.
Both parts out later this week. Not long to wait.
This is gonna be fun!!!
This is going to be BRILLIANT 👏👏👏👏
I look forward to the Picantenstein!
Has been and still is the best car channel on RUclips. Oh and the best podcast. Great work Johnny!!!
2:47 as he described how he wanted to get this preproduction car destined to be crushed off Kia and give it _(a last lease of life)_ I swore he was going to say *"A DAMN GOOD THRASHING!"* xD
Exciting! Looking forward to the mods.
Great adventure! Awesome!
Jonny, you legend. I'm so ready for this. Maybe your second channel could be slightly obscure MotorSport?
Thank you for the comment. Perhaps obscure Motorsport around the world is Jonny's new Louis Theroux?
We need to see the damage done after the trial
🤣 It was all very, very interesting but worth watching just for the final minute. This sounds like a brilliant event. Motorsports for the common folk.
This is a cracking idea Johnny, really looking forward to watching the series. Great that Kia are supporting you and AutoMax look like they are the ideal partner!
Thank you! Episode 2 out this Thursday, and the big finale out next Sunday
So will the car still have to be crushed or could it be just used for off-road driving shame to see all the effort goes to waste?
Shame that so many interesting pre-production cars have to be scrapped, but it’s great you could absolutely bugger one up beforehand!
What an interesting thing to do! Really looking forward to seeing more. This Picanto might surprise us, lol.
So.. to say it short.. you're going for a Jimny-fication on a Picanto.
Does that make this car a Picamny ? (sounds directly as a new Pokemon breed also) 😂
Good luck with this project. I'm a fan !! *You should talk with Spark or Maïsto for a 3D scan and make it a scale model 😁
Looking forward to seeing how this comes along! You'll be done before Binky that's for sure
We've already done the event!
I look forward to the series!
Reverse click bait. Thought this was going to be a bit of silly off roading, but is looking like a fantastic series! Makes me want to run to eBay to find a car to do the same.
Great video idea. More stuff like this please.
I'm pretty stoked to see the outcome of this adventure!!! Awesome!!!!
Next episode out on Thurs
This is a nice surprise JS, 👍
This is gonna be good, cheers Johnny
Really looking forward to this series! I wonder if it would be possible to do something similar with other manufacturer protos and make further videos doing it?
The Picanto is a superb little car - Great Video JS!
Production on these videos recently is amazing!
'On song' - love the expression, otsot.
This has to be some of the best content on RUclips, getting better and better keep up the excellent work mate 💪🤟
Cheers v much. So glad you're 'getting' it.
Just bought my daughter one to learn to drive in. Even the same colour. She loves it.
This is bloody good television, this is!
This is awesome!
Brilliant. Cant wait for the next vid.
I see what you did there...
