Shakespeare Festival (free) is held in the old LA Zoo during the summer evenings. We explored the zoo in the afternoon and later had a picnic while watching the play. Time to binge on your videos again as I prepare to explore after getting vaccinated. Thanks! 👍👏
Great video! I totally missed the smaller enclosures last time I was there -- I headed around the back to that part of this horror zoo. I don't think the foundation/graffiti ruins were part of the zoo -- I think it was an old ranger station or ranger cabin for the park. Could be mistaken about that, though. I have always hated zoos, then I went to the new LA Zoo, and thought, "This is really nice -- I wonder why I hate zoos so much." A couple of weeks I went to the ruins of the old LA zoo, and I remembered why I hated them so much. I don't have any specific memories of these old types of zoo cages, but the I definitely remembered the sick feeling I got seeing them -- (childhood zoo trauma -- haha!). I still hate seeing birds in a zoo, though -- birds aren't meant to be caged. You can create large enough enclosures for most animals, but I don't think I've ever seen an enclosure that is worthy of a bird. Anyway, I'm rambling now -- great video!
@@trexinvert Thank you for the suggestion!! I drove up to Griffith Observatory yesterday, & it's the first time I've ever seen a sign for the bird sanctuary. I will definitely check it out!!
We were here in 2019 and didn't explore as much as you, but it seems that there is more fencing than before. We were able to go down into the areas by the back fence area that smelled of urine lol
I think that the old enclosure could be turned into a bouldering park for the public to rock climb. Just add some padding to the ground and it could be fun. Might be a new life for it.
So Josh you got me thinking the last time I went to the old zoo was probably the last time I was at the zoo probably back in the 60s Probably like the same time Lion country Safari was around in Irvine
I would be careful if you going with kids too, I have seen needles there aside from the weed and urine smell. But overall a pretty cool short stop if you going to check out the observatory or the zoo. Haven't been to the observatory in ages, heard they started charging parking fees.
Went there in 1939! Had my picture taken with my twin brother by the L.A. Times- on the front page! It was a wonderful zoo! All of L.A. was wonderful then!
went there a week ago wayyy too many people when i went Kids were spray painting in broad dayligght I could barley breathe going up the stairs of that enclosure....
I had no idea they had an old abandoned zoo there- that’s interesting!!
It is pretty fun to explore!
@@californiathroughmylens Boomers caused the Covid crisis by wasting money.
Lies again? LAZ ADA
Always wanted to visit since i saw Police Academy 2 as a child, one of the coolest spots i’ve ever seen
Thanks for the tour Josh! Interesting choice for the city to put picnic tables on the former enclosures.
pro tip: watch movies on Flixzone. Been using them for watching all kinds of movies lately.
@Griffin Apollo Definitely, been watching on Flixzone for since november myself =)
@Griffin Apollo definitely, I have been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :D
So cool! I didn’t even know about this and I’ve live in LA all my life. 😆
Thanks for another cool video 👍🏻
Oh man, that is one of my favorite places! I need to go back one day soon!
Love historical sites. Did not know about this one!
Will try it in my next LA trip.
Old LA never gets old.

Never knew there was an Old LA Zoo. Thank you. Kind of reminds me that I should go visit the current LA Zoo, if it is open.

Hey J.Apple you should hike bird sanctuary in the park(on the south side or Greek Theatre side). Absolutely no cages or fences anywhere.

We went there when I was a kid in the'60s. I recall the keepers feeding the big cats, however it wasn't a very good zoo.
Wow! Had no idea about this. Cool that you included some before footage.
I lived down the road, right on Western Ave and never been on this part of Griffith park, lol! Thanks for sharing. May go check this place out!..👍👍😊😊

haha glad you could explore it and confirm the small 😂
Old L.A. Zoo is a classic lol
We’ve been there many times, and yet, you just show me new areas that I haven’t seen before 😄 Awesome vídeo Josh!
That would be a cool hike
Maybe you should do a video on the haunted picnic table! It's not too far from there.
Will have to look that up!
Table 29 lol
...And the haunted carousel down the road from there
And the haunted tree that’s up the road
@@soyunik7979 that carousel's haunted? I never knew! I always loved going on there all the time when I was young. Thx for the new fact :)
Another great video, my man!
Josh if I remember correctly Threes Company opening scene was shot here. Great video!
Interesting.!! Thank you Josh again.
Awesome!
What time does the hiking Trail close?🤔
Surprised how many of the enclosures still exist! Our old zoo in Vancouver is mostly gone except for the polar bear enclosure.
Thanks Josh!
You bet!
Great video.
Finally a zoo!
Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪
haha, a different zoo than normal!
@@californiathroughmylens Haha yeah, hope you can show us an open one too someday
There’s also a big pool looking thing but it’s hidden
Where was the old ranger’s office located?
Great video!

Where is located ?
This is Zed's gang hideout from Police Academy 2!!!
summer home of Indie Shakespeare Festival.
interesting location
Some days ago I watched a TV show about ghost hunters in that place. If I remember right it's near the HOLLYWOOD sign 🤔
Men would be lost without adventure :D have fun !
There's definitely still critters on exhibit....MRSA!
Love this! We explored the zoo too : @
Those poor animals that lived in those cages.
Cool
What, no Pops today?
As soon as I saw the thumbnail I though anchor man.

Have you ever been to the notorious picnic table with the haunted tree on it where the lovebirds lost their lives?😳👻
The old zoo... Not the new zoo... but the old zoo.
Yep, the old zoo! haha
Ahhh about 6-7 years ago my buddy and I went and he got covered in fleas 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Very sad to know animals were kept in such small enclosures.
