  • Lake Manly is a rare natural lake that only appears after periods of heavy rain in Death Valley National Park. It had not appeared for over two decades before Hurricane Hilary in Southern California brought it back to life. We went to visit this unique spot and had a blast exploring a lake that formed at the lowest point in North America. Let us know what you think in the comments!

    On our very first visit and road trip to the US, we were able to see the lake a week ago (2nd week of April). Wasn't aware that it has been there two decades ago also.
    Love your style of videos and how you present. Used them to also plan our trip. In particular loved your south-west road trip with your dad.

    Oh wow - I had no idea the size of the lake! That is insane! I have some friends that were able to kayak there - kind of a once in a lifetime thing! I'm kind of partial to the name "Manly" as William Lewis Manly hiked out of Death Valley & back in to save my ancestors (Bennett family - the ones stuck in the valley floor in 1849). Loved this :)

    Lovely! I went down back in 2005 later in the spring when there was an incredible bloom. Flowers everywhere when I was there, but a lot less lake. I do recall there being water… but really I went to see the flowers. Seeing your video brought up some nice memories. I suppose there will be a nice bloom later this spring. I won’t be able to travel this year so I doubly appreciate your video.

    Thanks Josh great video. I saw the same location on Wonderhussy's channel, a few weeks ago. She was able to kayak, but she doesn't stick around for the sunsets. I remember doing a marathon in death valley a few years back, we lodged in Furnace Creek nearby. Maybe you can do a Death Valley weekend or week shoot. The area is so big with trails and canyons.

    I went there years ago with my friend Harry Johnson and there was no lake and it was incredibly hot even in September! We drove for miles to see the Beehives that were used years ago to make Charcoal. That place was way up high in the mountains and much cooler. If I get back that way, I discovered there are hiking trails up there that I would love to hike on. Driving back down the mountains we could feel the cool temperatures turning hot again! One of my best memories was when we went into the restaurant by Badwater and the hotel and asked to be seated in the no smoking section. The women hostess then told us "you are in California, they are all no smoking sections!".

      The Charcoal Kilns are up around 8K elevation - lots of mining history up there from Skidoo, Aguereberry Camp and Jail Canyon. The Panamint Range is an underappreciated area of the park. As you can see in Josh's video, Telescope Peak - the high point of the range and the park is covered with snow in the winter.

    Hey Josh and viewers. I have a question for anyone California local who may see this:
    My partner and I have booked a trip from Canada to LA in late June and have been planning a road trip from LA to San Simeon through Big Sur to Caramel by the Sea. As we’ve been planning I’ve noticed the road closure around Limekiln State Park that is detouring all routes that way back to the 101. I’m wondering if you have any insight on this detour and if it’s enough to reconsider our destinations around California. Google says the road will be closed until September. 🤷🏼‍♀️

    • @californiathroughmylens
      @californiathroughmylens  2 месяца назад

      Yea, you can't drive all the way through Big Sur right now, so you have to go back out the north. You can always stay in Caramel and then drive down for the day and back to Caramel if that works for your schedule.
