I'm British but have lived in Cyprus for the past 16yrs and when I read about your childhood it brought back so many memories of my childhood too, we are a similar age ☺ I too loved to get the ice cold orange juice in summer from the milk man ( Frank) we also had the bread/cakes delivery man (Francis) the fish monger every Tuesday in his van and every Saturday all the older women of the neighborhood would gather outside the corner shop for chat while their husbands were in the betting shop putting bets on horse racing. There were no big supermarkets back in the 70s when I grew up. Love watching you cook. I cant wait for my first trip to Cape Town in April 2021

My mom often made fritters...usually pumpkin. I’ve always been a bit nervous to try but now I’m going to make some. I also have bananas at the moment.
This just gave me a great idea to add bananas to crumpet batter. Normally cut up bananas over the crumpets and drizzle golden syrup.

M Jay bicarbonate would need an acid added to active it, ie buttermilk, lemon etc 🤓
and baking powder makes it rise (increases the volume) and gives your baking a light texture
