    Just seen it on Netflix.
I noticed this strange thing of Mud on the island being socalled short
of food ..but he ALWAYS has a fresh pack of cigarettes in his chest
pocket. Weird. And how dirty Mud is, his (lucky?) shirt is SPOTLESSLY
clean. It even gets CLEANER throughout the movie. ..trying to seek
meaning of it (from the director)...but i find nothing on you tube and
    websites.
You disappoint me. So here is my theory:
Mud and Galen is a metaphor for Ellis and NEckbone. Future grown up
Ellis (whom we don't see, but is the narrator of the
story) remembers his time as kid with his best pal Neckbone. Just how he
reminiscence about how he dealt with first love (May Pearl) and how she
cockteased him ..eventually he moved out to the big city with his
divorced mother. That is the true past.
The glorifying your youth (like we all do...the past was always
fine...agree?) part is where the fantasy Mud (Ellis as hunky superman)
Juniper( May Pearl as the most beautiful trailer gal), the criminal
brothers Carver (stands for the bullying punk with May Pearl) and Galen
(future Neckbone both are gifted mechanics) fall in.
Galen watching the boys Ellis and Neckbone helping Mud is simply a
memory recall of how the two boys played on their island , building
their version of a tree hut: a boat in the trees. Perhaps the mirror
image of an older neckbone (as Galen) recalling that same youth
moment..which older Ellis imagines older Neckbone would be doing too.
    That is all.
It is a celebration of boy's past time youth mixing the "boring" times
but yet as a kid happy times with a youthlike fantasy about danger,
hope, eternal love and betrayal, and going your own paths in the teenage
age (Ellis goes to City, Mud goes to sea).
And beenie wieners are only cheered for by kids...an adult would not
    hunger for beenie wieners...

      the director hints on it:
      bottling the youth.
And his admiration of Tom Sawyer/Mark Twain to capture the adventure senses of youth.

Had a blue bag in the movie, could of had 2 cartons in there. You can also wash a shirt pretty easily when you barley wear it because of the beach/island situation
