How much QUICKER is a Paid Setup, really?? (iRacing)

  • Here is a small sample size of a comparison between a standard Iracing setup and one you would get when paying for a service. Keep in mind, each brand that does this will be different, each track will be different and this will make the lap times of it all almost impossible to say exactly how much faster it is to a tenth.
What we can take away from this perticular test is that it may save that you ~ .2sec a lap if you are consistent, but this is easier said then done as the setups trade stability for speed, making it harder to control most of the time.
If $10 a month on top of purchasing all these tracks and content, as well as the yearly membership is feeling like it is getting too much out of hand then you will be perfectly fine to keep on racing without having a brand new setup for each track, just pick one you think fits well (eg. medium downforce for a semi fast track)
For anyone that thinks it will benefit them subbing to one of these services, the track guides I think will be even more impactful than the setups!

After a couple months using VRS setups, I have a opinion about.
The VRS are a quick help to run if You dont have time to make yourself setups. But if you want a good feeling whit the car and do consistenly laps times, you need to spent time making yourself setups. The guy who post the setups on VRS web page does the setup to him and his driving style, so it isn't the same of your. For example: in the montmelo circuit I couldn't do at 1:37:700 whit the setups of VRS. i staid at 1:38:900 after a few days trying,so I had to take a iracing basic setups and adapt to me, finally I could do 1:37:900. Of course the profesional make better times but now I have a stable car and I can do this time feeling the car better. to conclude vrs is a good tools to compare laps time and telemetey to improve your drive but finally you have to understand and study the differents parameters of the car to find the better setups for you.

100%. There is always a debate on who has the best setups but if you can do them yourself it is best. Takes a huge amount of time though and the track guides are great so just depends what you want

@@swolabear Another thing that is very important at the same level as a good setup, is knowing the correct line and some tricks used by professional iracing players, this can be seen in some circuits where professionals sometimes make different lines than the real drivers with real cars.

i think i will get the premium for just a couple months so i can reverse engineer the setups as i feel making my own is in the end what i want to do! not alot of great tutorials on the different cars though and i do like to dabble in many different series!

Coming from bikes this setup stuff is so personal with different styles of riding and driving. I think understanding what is happening and how to dial it out is the goal. But as they say its all a compromise. Faster here slower there more unstable under braking or losing corner exit speeds. Its a minefield.

    • @swolabear

Absolutely! I was successful in dirt with making my own setups, always made them super tight under throttle and worked well especially when the track went slick. But some of these road cars have SO many options to tweak it is insane, maybe one day I will get around to learning it all haha

@@untrainedprofessionals2374 I agree, learning what the different changes actually do and how they affect the cars handling characteristics allow a driver to set up a car that they personally feel comfortable with. I have tried using some setups done by others that to me were basically undriveable for me.
Everyone has a different driving style and the final perfect car set up for one may be terrible for another.
Aliens seem to adjust better than us normal slower folks so though so this again will vary from each individual. I am trying to just get better at doing my own set ups and yes it does take time, it is not about the money but having the knowledge makes me a better racer and able to tweak a cars set up to where it fits me and what I like to drive.
There is a fine line between the fastest and stable enough to still give confidence across a full race distance. This is something else that I try to do a set up initially on a half fuel load and newer tires but as I get close I need to see how that set up does when the fuel load is lighter and the tires are about done as well.
Most setups always seem to be done with new tires and a light fuel load, fine for qualifying but maybe not so great for a full race stint.
To each his own but I will still struggle sometimes as I continue to learn and save my money.

@@billwiley7216 Its the learning for me. Especially when you do something and you believe it is a good change but like you said tyres wear fuel load lightens and then not so brilliant.
You can see how it is highly skilled profession in the real world.

I think the main thing is that no matter how quick the setup is, it is no good if you don't have the car control. I have seen so many races online where people who have paid setups are all over the place and end up going slower than someone who has modified there own setup.

Not sure people are away but FFB is effected by fps. The lower the ffb the higher the input lag and frame times which effect when you feel hwat you feel and will effect your times greatly.
I used to run 55 to 60fps but now I get over 150fps and my times got a lot better.

I've tried VRS in the past and to be honest it's pretty useful, not only for the setups but for the telemetry and in depth analysis. If you want to actually get better it shows you the mistakes you make and how to correct them. That said, I don't use it anymore and I've gotten higher in IR. I use slightly tweaked baseline and it runs fine. I don't think it's a necessity but more of a commodity
