Before 99 Ranch, we use to head to Oakland Chinatown on Saturdays for dim sum and groceries. Sun Hong Kong was our go to for midnight snacks in the '80's. Thanks for the memories and great video. I really enjoyed it. Hope you will continue to make this type of content. The area still looks pretty good.
Thank god for 99 ranch and the other Asian stores, now we don't need to commute to SF/Oakland for groceries. Though it was a lot of fun to go with family to eat and shop.
Vien Huong, Binh Minh Quan, and Gum Kuo really hit home for me. I’m so glad you have video footage of these places because in 5-10 years, who knows if they’ll be around. I hope theyre around forever 🥺
I grew up there in the late 80's and early 90's and this video brought back so many memories. I went to Chinese school on 9th street and balled at Lincoln school everyday. We still do grocery shopping there and my dad lives in Chinatown. I now work a few blocks away on 8th street and still in the area. Great video!
Man I just came across these videos. I've spent about a decade in Oakland and more than thirty in the East Bay combined. I love that you're giving these places some much deserved shine! Some are old favorites of mine as well, and some I'm learning about for the first time from your channel. Thank you for doing this.
I love the name of the channel, "Did You Eat Yet?" Many Chinese people, particularly the older generation, grew up very poor and didn't have enough food to eat. It's a greeting people say to each other to show they care. The literal translation is, "Have you eaten rice yet?"
These videos bring back some good memories from all the places I ate at. Shooting Star had this awesome mango sago dish, VH Noodles is always a must and can’t forget about Saint Anna Cafe with the baked porkchop over rice smothered in their Saint Anna sauce.
OMG, I sent this link to all my pre-Covid lunch buddy coworkers. You hit the very same restaurants that we would always lunch at before COVID. We all work remotely now, so we've not gathered together for lunch for 3 years, It brought back a lot of great memories. Thanks for posting!! 😊🥢🥡🥟🍝🍜🍚🍛🍤🍱🍲👨🍳👩🍳🥘
Enjoyed your stories and take of these places ABC Bakery!!! I moved out 15 years ago. You were one of those kids running around My dad, who was born in 1922, really like Yung Kee. I always had the BBQ duck
looking forward to that 10 part series!! delicieuse princess bakery on 13th btw harrison and franklin stayed open all through the pandemic-something for my kids to look forward to after zoom school! red bean bun for my older one and a 1$ sprinkle cookie for my little one. we celebrated my older kid’s 13th b-day with a beautiful cake from delicieuse princess. they closed down for several months, and just celebrated a grand reopening last week.
I just found your channel and love the production value and insight into the bay area communities. Making me so hungry! I got a lot of spots added to my list to go check out now.
Great video! Great story telling. You brought back some very nostalgic memories. I miss spots like ABC where wed go late night after drinking and hanging out.
Welcome to the Bay! Don’t leave any valuables in your car, and don’t go anywhere too unfamiliar if you don’t know the area, but aside from that, def enjoy the town
It really brought back lots of memories , I had my Auto. business in Oakland from 1986 - 2007 , visit Chinatown restaurants all the time. Thanks for your video
I like Wonder Food bakery. They make great egg tarts, cream cakes, napoleon and many other yummy breads (i.e. cocktail bun, pineapple bun, mayo ham corn bun, etc.)
I just can say I miss the old NYC Chinatown than now Chinatown. All my favorite place to go in Chinatown its not there anymore. Talk about Gum Kuo, there was one in NYC Chinatown but its not a restaurant, its groceries store that I used to love to hang out in when my young school years. I get all my snacks and drinks in bottle there. Love and miss the good old days. Thanks for sharing!
TX guys, I enjoyed this. I live nearby and its so good to learn more about where I live. Keep up the great work. I like shooting star cafe - - its its own little world in there.
One of my favorite spots I took my family when I lived in the Bay Area was New Gold Medal. Their wonton noodle soup had just the right amount of Hong Kong flavor with all shrimp wontons. The noodles were the best chewy kind that will always be in my memory. They also had a tomato beef Hong Kong style crispy noodles that I have not found anywhere else that makes it like they do. I hope they have kept up the tradition still. Of all things, I really enjoyed their puffy and thick shrimp egg foo young with gravy. They also had an excellent version of salt and pepper fish fillet. There is nothing more satisfying than a big bowl of juk with fish fillet with pi dan and fried youtiao on the side. I am hungry just thinking about it. Is there a special rate airfare to Oakland Airport this weekend? 😂😂😂😂😂
I was not convinced vegetarian food is worth eating, until I tried Golden Lotus and Nature Vegetarian, and it really changed my perspective on vegetarian/vegan food. When it comes to a hot, affordable, and really filling meal I like Tastee Steam Kitchen's single-person hotpots. For a teensy bit more out of the pocket, I like the Mắm Hanoi pho. I loooove several places that sit slightly outside of Chinatown too; if you ever plan to try some places that are around Swan's Market, or towards 14th st, or want to try some other recommendations, don't hesitate to ask. I gotta support my Oakland City and all its awesome food!
I use to go to Church’s chicken in Oakland with my friend. For some reason I like their chicken and it’s only one in Bay Area. Do on video on this place. Thanks
hello dyey, the video was nice on oakland chinese food - wish knew how far berkeley campus would be. the names (chinese) and english (nam) writing is different. but it is a marker you are in oakland. may be to show SF english (man) writing. thanks again. elle for sour liver in noodle soup
dim sum in the bay area is a whole long story i can tell some day for sure. so many classics that aren’t around anymore that i grew up with in chinatown, but still so many that are around that i’ve celebrated important occasions at and more.
80s old lady here😂 jade Villa was a great dine in dim sum unfortunately i believe it's gone now. Combo chowfun with gravy at VH😢 I miss you so. Thanks for the nostalgia trip🎉
It's been replaced for a while. I remember going there in the 80s and a few blocks away was a huge parking lot which I believe now is the Pacific plaza.
Awesome video, we ate at all these places growing up. Just sad how dangerous it is now. We're literally afraid for our lives and debate whether to go or not when we're visiting 😢
Omg, it's so retro. Those are mine too. But now Oakland Chinatown is so empty and so ghetto. So many stores are closed and illegal streets vendors seem to be all over.
Last time I went to Gum Kuo Restaurant in Oakland like 5-7 years ago, we ordered a plate of Chinese Broccoli. Ga Dyam they didn't clean it cause there were soo many grubs. I was okay if it was just two or three, but there were like 10+ grubs. They didn't clean it at all. Finally just told the waiter to come over and look at all the grubs. They apologize took the plate back and didn't charge us just for that plate. Never went back since. Besides that plate, the other dishes were good. Knowing they don't really wash the vegetables, I'm not going back.
Any big city has its crime, and you just gotta be aware of your surroundings and where/when you’re somewhere you’re not familiar with. But yeah, the crime in the whole bay area has been pretty bad recently. just gotta be smart about what you’re doing and when you go somewhere if it’s somewhere you don’t know
Long ago people all over the the Bay Area come to Oakland for groceries cause it's the only place for Asian food. I see people come from Brentwood, Concord, Antioch come to Oakland, but now is no more.
That’s interesting to think about, now with more Asian restaurants and grocery stores everywhere, people don’t have to travel all the way to Oakland Chinatown anymore
VH had rude servers brothers that kicked you out if you didn’t order anything . Gum Kuo I believe was the best spot for roasted duck and roasted pork . Pho hoa Lao 1 was the spot for pho in Oakland before the second one opened on international
@@HiDidYouEatYet no shit, that’s how most restaurants operate but most don’t kick you out if you’re with a group and seat randoms right next to you or ask you to leave .
