I grew up in the outer sunset. Raised by Sicilian immigrants. Growing up I noticed many of my friends came from immigrants too. Indians, Chinese, Albanian, Philippino , Russian…many different ethnic backgrounds. It was a melting pot. That’s why food was diverse and great there. People brought their own unique food culture and shared it. Most of those families are gone now but the small mom and pops still standing, they’re probably pretty good. Go support them. God bless SF.
First moved to SF in '95 and was pretty much broke my first 3 months. My go to meal each day was the Five Spice Chicken with rice/cabbage at Cheung Hueng. That meal was my lifeline 🙏👌💯
I've been living in the Sunset for at least 10 years now. It's certainly isolated from the craziness of downtown SF. It's nice and cool throughout the summer and the Chinese food is plentiful.
Other good places in the Sunset: Terra Cotta Warrior, Manna, Umma, Yummy Dumpling, Marne Thai, Toast’N Egg, Lavash, Little Sweet, Yifang Fruit Tea, Game Parlour, Arizmendi Bakery, Kothai Republic, Nabe, Banh Mi & Boba
Love the shoutout to Sunset District! So underrated. It’s the first area of the city I lived in when I moved off campus at SF State. I once got an extended no-interest on a credit card because me and the banker talked about the San Tung Wings 😂
Keep getting after it, Victor. You're doing the food, but more importantly, the culture of your experience a service. It's fun to watch you explore and reconnect with your history while getting to watch all these amazing service industry heroes.
I appreciate these types of videos so much. It's easy to find recommendations for the touristy parts of the Bay, I want to go support local Asian-owned businesses like these!
I love the fact you're covering the Sunset where I've shopped and eaten for the past 30+ years. In addition to Irving and Noriega, there are lots of great Chinese restaurants on Taraval, beyond 19th Ave. This is where you'll find a concentration of more northern Chinese cuisine, like dumplings and soup noodles. BTW, these northern cuisine restaurants are a result of new immigration patterns whereas early immigration was from southern China, hence lots of Cantonese restaurants. It's great that there's such a diversity of Chinese food available. (note: I know you [Victor] know all this, but I thought I'd add more info since many of the commenters thus far seem unfamiliar with the Sunset neighborhood.)
Growing up in San Francisco during the '70s and '80s, I have cherished memories of the city. Back in the day going to Chinatown was an all day Saturday event - Dim Sum in the am and then grocery shopping. You went to the butchers, fishmonger, and produce store. Mom use to buy a bag of long bones to make broth and remembering we were sucking out the bone marrow before it became popular. Because we did not have a car, we took the Muni, 38 Geary bus from the Richmond district to get to Chinatown. Irving St in the Sunset District and Clement Street in the Richmond District were an excellent alternative for those who lived in the Sunset and Richmond.
Best spot for grocery stores and variety stores! Cannot go there without going to Not Latte and Mochi donot!! Golden Gate Park is the most beautiful park in the world! 🎉❤️
Growing up I had an aunt who lived on 17th and Irving. It was always a treat to go visit her and my cousins during the holidays. We'd walk Irving and either eat or order out at Sam Tung. They moved to Seattle around 8 years ago so I haven't been back, but glad to see Sam Tung is still doing well and a local favorite.
I grew up in the Sunset in the early 1960’s. Back then, I think we were the only Chinese family there. Things were so different back then and the traffic on 19th Avenue wasn’t so congested. Although I moved to the north bay, I don’t visit SF much.
My parents had a family friend on 27th and Noriega. When I got my first internship in SF, I found a roomshare on 31st and Noriega and stopped by Cheung Hing all the time on the way home for some cheap dinner. Great spot.
Nice job! showing love to a humble, working class neighborhood like the Sunset and featuring Brandon. There are indeed pockets of regional asian and chinese food that were impacted by the pandemic. And the restaurant folks keep hustling and more importantly provide a huge service to the community 🎉
I love Pineapple King, my wife would always bring a 6 pack home. Although I didn't know there was a premium option, need to let her know I need to try that mango filled one.
Nice job on the video. It is nice to see that small shops are still thriving and making great food SF is known for. I went to Lincoln High back in the day and many of these shops reminds me of the neighborhoods of grounded people who care about what they do for their community.
I definitely miss the sunset. Living in eastbay now the sunset is my entire childhood. I feel nostalgic but also sad that the places I knew before are no longer there. Hopefully new businesses will help it thrive again.
Thanks for putting in all the work into these videos, it really shows and very enjoyable to watch. As someone whose not native to the bay but living here for the past four years now, it’s great to learn the history and then being able to go and try these places out
Also a Sunset kid. 10/10 recommendations. Grew up eating at Oriental Seafood like every week. Still a staple for when I crave delicious Chinese food at an affordable price.
Damn, I lived in SF for 3-4 years before moving to Oakland and I had never been through the Sunset district. Had no idea there was such good food there! 😭
Happy bakery. Best dumplings and plates outside of Wong Lee and dim sum bakery in Chinatown. The huedong barbeque place is good near happy bakery like 21st and irving
This brought me back to my turf 25 plus years ago! So many good places to eat! Thanks for your vlog! Have to go back visit!😋👍. The one thing though, is parking! So hard to find !
Literally my favorite Bay Area based RUclips series. Great to hear San Leandro name drop - what restaurant does Brandon’s family own in the dro? I would love to stop by and support ❤
Appreciate it! Their family actually closed up the restaurant a while ago, but they’re still very involved with the regional Chinese restaurant scene in the Bay
We use to hold down 46 and taravel and all the sets are connected so any phone call we get about 100 ASAP!! R.I.P to the fallen soldiers real AZN homies this was in the early 2000's.
LOVE LOVE LOVE your videos Victor. Thank you for bringing a light to the beautiful eats in the bay. Can you name your friend Brandon family's restaurant in San Leandro? My family and I want to check them out and support them.
Thanks for the Videos, super genuine!!! yup us east bay boys never really went to SF or even the Avenues until we were older and went to go visit a "friend" that we met at the club =p
Grew up frequenting the sunset with my fam a lot too - Underrated sf district fs. Bought some of the greenacre stuff you guys put out a couple of years ago when I was in high school LOL glad you guys are doing well 🙌
Pandesal, butter, and over easy egg. Kind of addicting and simple. I’m not a baker, but a couple seconds in a preheat oven, the pandesal’s a bit fluffy and firm. Slide some butter in between and add a cooked egg. I’d eat it even if it goes cold; left in the microwave.
Thanks for making this type of content Victor! You should definitely make more food content/mukbang with BChoi in the future! Maybe Clement and San Bruno districts with their mini “Chinatown s”
Thanks for the recommendations! I admit I have avoided Mini Dumplings cause I miss the previous Korean place that was there. But it does look fun! And Gao looks amazing!
🥲 so many memories in the City. Eastbay, San Leandro, Castro valley. Rodeo , Martinez , Albany . This episode 😢 if I can pick a place to live sunset . I walked in Brandon parents, cannot recall if they had to go food, but happy bakery on Irving st became go to for lunch. near Wells Fargo
Growing up on the peninsula my family would often spend the day in GG Park and then venture off to find an amazing Chinese restaurant for dinner. Always knew when we were one of only a handful, if not the only white people in the restaurant the food was going to be incredible.
I was born in 91 so didn’t experience it myself, but have heard a lot about that too. Still a few Irish establishments in the area, but i’m sure nothing like before
@@johnnytran800 I mentioned the Irish population in a comment above before seeing this - but in short Sunset is still half Irish. The Chinese didn't take over the district, but they do have more storefronts that are visibly Chinese. Majority of the Irish businesses based in Sunset are not storefronts, they're mostly construction companies, painters, home-related businesses that you don't see. But in terms of residents, I would still say they outnumber Chinese folks.
I was born and raised in the Sunset right by the 22nd Irving Market in 76’ and was told by my mom on how my dad questioned the move as too ambitious for my mom to want to move out of our Broadway st apartment in C-town for his reasons that ..”there aren’t any Chinese people there!!”. Well, things change when you act on it.
08:00 Oriental Seafood restaurant: I found only swiekiau (how the Indonesian call it) or shrimp dumplings (they call it here), something like wonton but in different shapes with pork, shrimp, & ear mushrooms. Delicious!!! The owner of the Mini Pots somehow is successful to break "the curse" of the location. Uncountable type of restaurants occupied that space but failed. The Mini Potsticker is the 1st one, I believe, who is successful. There is always people waiting outside for their orders or to be seat in.
Great video! It hits pretty much all the hip and tradition spots except I didn’t know gao opened another location in sunset. I never tried the San Mateo one but had been seeing many news about it. I live in Oakland and just got back from sunset half an hour ago. Was going to try s and e cafe on 19th ave but it’s closed. Saw the major candidate doing a short clip in the area.
I have to disagree with Brandon when he says that not a lot of people outside of The City come to the area. I live in the Inner Sunset, right next to GG Park, and there are TONS of tourist who come because of the park. I literally helped a family of tourist on Saturday, with how to get back to their hotel down in Fisherman's Wharf, because I noticed they were looking at a map a the 44 bus stop. I live on probably the busiest block in the Inner Sunset and you know how I know this? Every Saturday and Sunday, starting at 10am, there is a line of cars trying to drive into GG Park to access The Academy of Sciences parking lot. I avoid driving on the weekends after 10am, because when I do, it takes me 10-15 mins to get from the corner of my block to my apartment, which is in the middle of the block. I'm an SF Native, who grew up in The Inner Rich, but now live in The Inner Sunset (exactly 1 mile from where my family still live). My story is very similar to Brandon. My immigrant parents owned a Chinese restaurant on Lombard for 10+ years in the 80s.
Totally hear you. I’m not in the area as much as you guys, but I can imagine it’s gotten more and more busy again as we move further away from when the pandemic initially hit. I know there’s way more events again at the park, and with the street/local events and farmer markets, I’ve been hearing about a lot of these efforts to revitalize. We actually initially shot this footage way earlier in the year too, so I’m sure even in this amount of time since then, it’s even a bit different again. Thanks for sharing!
Agreed, and I also disagree with Brandon's statement that Sunset got hit hard by the pandemic and not many people visit ... 94122 is the most recovered zip code in the City based on sales tax revenues and is thriving. I can barely find parking on Irving! It sounds like he no longer lives here so it seems his assessment is from older memories. That said, it really is the best district to live and visit. One last tidbit of history - Sunset is not just mostly Asian, especially as you go further towards the 94116 area. The Sunset has always been known to be heavy with Irish immigrants, many working class families/blue collar. It wasn't until the late 70s did more and more Chinese arrive. My parents moved to 46th and Ulloa in the mid-60s and had to hire an Irish nanny for my brother because there were so few Chinese around at that time.
@@kristinelai The majority of the shops that closed during pandemic were mostly on Taravel Street. Not as much asian sotres in a concentrated area like the Noriega and Irving parts.
Thanks for sharing! He still lives in the Sunset today, and we did shoot this footage a bit ago, so some things may have changed more since then. I’m sure a ton of businesses were affected by the pandemic though, as it did anywhere else in the Bay. I’ve read about all the efforts in the Sunset to get people out again though, so I’m definitely happy to hear it’s been very active again! Parking in that area has always been tough when going to eat out there lol. Very true that the area historically before the 70s wasn’t much Chinese yet, we could have added in the Irish history before too, so appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Being an SFSU alumni, these were my stomping grounds for delicious foods! Now I'm in the east bay and wondering if Brandon's family restaurant is still open in San Leandro? I would love to give it a try and support local. Please share the info if it's still open. Thanks!

Very true that the area historically before the 70s wasn’t much Chinese yet, we could have added in the Irish history before too, so appreciate your feedback. Thanks for watching!
You is right Golden gate Park it's like Central Park but better. In my opinion 🙂
I like your content. Just liked & subbed. Please also cover East Bay Contra Costa County (where I live), South Bay, Peninsula, etc.
A lot more to come. Thanks for watching!
You should do this same exact type of video but for the Richmond District.
You already know it’s coming too

Cheung hing-last time I bought char siu they put scraps in the box. Watch them cut it up! Go to uncle Benny’s if you like donuts on 22nd Ave.
Great video! Being an SFSU alumni, these were my stomping grounds for delicious foods! Now I'm in the east bay and wondering if Brandon's family restaurant is still open in San Leandro? I would love to give it a try and support local. Please share the info if it's still open. Thanks!
Their family closed the restaurant a while back!
