Your mention of the Swastika as an example there strikes pretty close to home for me, as we Finns used it ever since our independence up until we were forced to stop using it after the second world war.
People still keep mistaking our WW2 markings for Nazi Swastika, especially with our cooperation with the Germans in the war. It's immensely frustrating

Not only was Carolus a good commander he actually was riding out scouting all the time with his lifeguard on tow. The swedish royal lifeguard never had it such tough never before or after Carolus Rex. In fact one such scoutung by the king gave him a shot in the foot and made him basically miss the battle of Poltava and delegated control to his generals that each one was vying for support from the king. rival generals and bad decisions made the war a bust for the Swede.

Contemporaries report of his seemingly inhuman tolerance for pain and his utter lack of emotion. His brilliant campaigning and startling victories brought his country to the pinnacle of her prestige and power, although the Great Northern War resulted in Sweden's defeat and the end of the empire within years of his own death."

I’m sure you know some of this but these are my thoughts on him and some facts on Sweden.
Sweden still is a monarchy and our next person on the throne will be Princess Victoria. :)
I think he was a bad ruler but not a bad person and I’ve studied him quite a lot.
He was suited to be a general not the King of a nation because he was only good at war and fighting which was useful during the war but he lacked diplomacy talents and refused to negotiate a peace treaty until he had completely won.
All I can say while he was responsible for Sweden’s fall from greatness he also was extremely talented and proved Swedish might on the battlefield over and over again leading the Carolean army.
And btw he fought alongside his men during many of the battles and was extremely loved by the troops. He was no more evil than many other European monarchs were.
This is personally one of my fav songs especially specifically the Swedish version but then again I’m also Swedish.
Btw Charles was an extremely disciplined and tough man and he would not let others take advantage of him this is probably one of the reasons why no one did anything against him.
Russia, Denmark and Poland thought they could crush this 15 year old oh boy were they mistaken this wouldn’t be an easy fight for them as they thought they would have to lose many times before they won.

I don’t know how I missed this comment yesterday. He definitely was competent on the battlefield, which like I said in the video, that completely surprised me when I first started learning about him. I mean, the list of really good field commanders historically who were teenagers is pretty dang low. I really like the Swedish version of the song too, it was awesome. It’s unfortunate his image has been co-opted and Sabaton took heat for doing the song. The story about the reporter was brutal.

What they say about Charles and Neo nazism is sadly true some people in Sweden have ruined his image.
People only hear that he’s a symbol for right wing so they automatically think he’s an evil and horrible person and don’t know anything about him and don’t feel like researching.
This pisses me of a lot. I speak openly here in my country with my friends how I love Charles the twelfth just to get people to do some research on him. If they say something bad on him I’ll educate people about him. I’ll teach them so they can know who he truly was and what he did both good and what I think was his flaws and mistakes and how he has basically no connections with any political side irl.

There's only a few nazists and racists that think like that. Everyone else is nationalists, which is nothing wrong. Nothing wrong to love your contry and think it's better then anything else. There's no racism in loving your country, nor is it racism to think your country is above others. That's where lefties take it wrong. Lots of lefties are racists, due to the fact that they relate nationalism with racism and trying to project their racist thoughts to nationalism. Like if I say I love Sweden and my country, and would never change it for anything else or another shit country, that's nothing racist. People can be nice from other countrys and so on, but I love Sweden and nothing else. I dont mind if someone come to visit, but I would never allow us to give away our Sweden to lets say globalsim.

I'd say Swedes are proud of the fact that Carl XII was successful despite the odds (to the extent that he was). But also view him with melancholy as the end of the Swedish Empire. That said, that's a great simplification because we also have no illusions about how horrible absolute monarchy is, or how awful the Swedish empire was in a lot of ways. We don't exactly view the Swedish "great times"/empire with rose tinted glasses. I'd say we think it's cool in the sense that it proved that we were capable of competing with the European great powers but also, it's not like it was a benevolent or great time or whatever.

19:42 (kind of) Fun fact: Finland still uses swastika in some context. It is a part of our "freedom cross" and for example part of official coat of arms of the University of Helsinki and shown in the flag of the president of the Republic of Finland. Charles XII led one of the most diverse armies in Swedish history. The fact that he has been co-opted by neo-nazis and ultra nationalists is just really unfortunate, though it’s hardly unique for Charles XII. History is not just the study of the past, but also how history is used today for various different purposes. My opinion of him is that he’s this sort of legendary military commander, certainly one of the best of his time, but it’s undeniable that his reign brought an end to the Swedish Empire. His great ancestor Gustavus Adolphus is certainly more admired and recognized for his efforts during the Thirty Years’ War.

Hey Light, I was wondering if you would jump in here at some point. Is there something specific about him that I’m missing on why he is used by those groups?

    • @LightxHeaven
      @LightxHeaven 2 года назад +2

@@rayceofhistory There's nothing in particular about his reign that would make him into such a symbol. However, when you consider things further: What does a nationalist want? A nationalist wants a historical figure that represents glory, honor and national pride. Charles XII's personality and dogged defense of the country has probably contributed to this image. This is nothing new as he was worshiped as hero throughout the 19th century. It's only fairly recently that neo-nazis have gotten involved in the picture. The short answer is probably: Long-standing romanticism about Sweden's last glory days as an empire which some unsavory groups have hijacked for their own purposes.

@@LightxHeavenI wonder how he would feel about his name and imagine being used in that way. This is all extremely interesting to me, there is no history like this for the US and no American historical figure used in such ways. We argue here about historical figures from the civil war era, but mostly that’s because the country actually split at that time. It’s why I wondered how everybody felt about the monarchy in general, because I don’t have a reference point for this type of stuff. But it’s unfortunate that Charles has become such a symbol for that in Sweden that it actually bothered people that Sabaton did a song on him.

Ofc with todays eye you can look at it like "he went to war... What's nice with that", but that doesnt work. It was other times, other mindsets and other priorities. World was different, hence why we call it the past and history. I mean, Adolf Hitler was a fkn scum for what he did, nobody can deny that. But still, the fact that Germany manage to do what they did during the Rule of Hitler, is still impressive.. Always look at the both sides of the coin. And no, I did not compare Adolf Hitler and Charles, they are nothing a like... I just did a brutal compareson so people will get the picture of what I'm tryin to say.

My only real argument against him specifically is hard headedness. And it’s not so much an argument as an observation. The guy was a great military leader, but hard headedness was leading to the domestic situation and economy getting worse because of the nature of the continued fighting. But I’ve said a hundred times that I can’t imagine what kind of person I turn into if I get the crown at his age, and so all things considered he sort of turned out the best you could hope for. He is very adept at playing the military game of the age, and I don’t think it’s fair to hold that against him, to me that’s one of the things that goes down on the “good” side.

The fact that Charles XII and other kings who were rulers during the era of the Swedish empire have been embraced by the Swedish nationalist right without challenge is very much a self-inflicted issue of the left-wing parties. These kings project military might and often great piety, which is something left wing politicians despise. They want themselves to be seen as the supreme authority, and any claims of authority and strength garnered from previous leaders should be slandered and considered illegitimate. There is very much a reason to why almost all monarchies, churches and nobilities throughout Europe were stripped of basically all power alongside the rise of communism and socialist ideals. If a political establishment constantly talks down and activly tries do downplay history, you leave the field open for anyone who respects those values to claim them as their own.

@@thelallare7826 that is such a foreign concept to me. I mean we have dummies here that push things like neonazism, but I’ve talked about this in other comments but nobody talks about monarchies here outside of academia, and academia talks about them in the polar opposite way as the romanticization of them or their countries under them. They are taught as the most selfish, evil, greedy people and systems that humans have ever come up with. That nothing good happened under them, nothing was done by a monarch that wasn’t for selfish or greedy reasons, and that they were the worst everywhere at any time they existed.
It’s why I come off sometimes as taking the side of monarchies. I’m not actually taking their side, I just see value in some monarchies throughout time even though I think it’s a good thing that we’ve moved away from absolute monarchs as humans. I don’t see them as inherently bad or evil, just totally dependent on the type of person on the throne.
