The raiders known as the Heroes of Telemark were given up for dead as they hid away in a hut on the Hardanger Plateau over the appalling winter of 1942-3. They had almost nothing to eat and eventually survived by eating moss.
There are already several movies and a tv series on the topic.
2 or 3 films have been made about the heavy water operation and a TV series.
What movies?
@@rayceofhistory Heroes of telemark and Kampen om tungtvannet
I have been to that place in Norway in Rjukan (I am from Sweden). Heavy water was a by-product of making manure I think.
And yes there is a movie about this brave men that blow the up the factory to prevent nazi-Germany to get the water and also they sank a boat that was carrying that cargo on its way to Germany.
Kind of sad story because there were civilian Norwegian onboard that boat as well that lost there lives as well. “The Heroes of Telemark” is one of the films made from this event.
"The Heroes of Telemark" didn't quite tell the story. "Kampen om tungtvannet" did. Also the mini-serie with the same name did.
They couldnt just bomb the site, due to the heavy water equipment being located in the basement and several stories with reinforced concrete above. The norwegian mini-series "The heavy water" war is a really good watch.
Yeah I thought about that towards the end of the video when they talked about a bombing run that didn’t actually do a ton..that makes sense. I’ll see if I can find that series.
@@rayceofhistory Also, bombing from the air at the time was incredibly inaccurate. A lot of bombs dropped at a high altitude would fall miles from the intended target.
