- Adrian Carton de Wiart fought in a variety of wars over more than forty years, and he was wounded... again and again and again, and yet he always came back for more. This episode is his sometimes ridiculous but always interesting and incredible story.

Carton de Wiart's story is pretty unique. What do you think of him? Tough soldier, total madman, or a combination of both?

Completely and utterly insane, his biography has gotta read like Lauri Törni on LSD.
Dude was more insane than mad Jack the guy who fought in WW2 with a great sword and longbow
Both. Sadist, masochist, and warrior aren't mutually exclusive lol
I remember in the 2019 VIP meet and Greet in vancouver Canada I asked Tommy if he could grow facial hair at all what would he choose? He dodged the question lol I assume it was the moustache after all lol
Based madman.
The living embodiment of "local man literally too stubborn to die."
The man Florida Man aspire to be
He inspired that
florida held on his legacy
@@aetherofthenorth9700 Exactly my thought. Cheers!
If I ever get to see Indy, hopefully some random place in the public, I'm gonna be so tempted to do my best Screaming Eagle impersonation back at him.
We got to make that into a race. 1st person to do it wins. Must be recorded and uploaded.
YES im on 😊
You mean you would return his mating call.
*CAW CAW*
AAK AAK!
He was my father's cousin's maternal grandfather. In 1961, at the age of six, I was introduced to him by my father. I remember looking at a pirate! My father says he said..."come here my boy. Always obey your father! Always serve your country! And never give up whatever the odds are!" What a man, I just wish I had been older to appreciate him.
That's an amazing story! We love reading these things 😎
What does it feel like to know you met a true legend?
@@MasonLongcor Humbling. But I have to ask, have we got people of such calibre today when it comes to bravery? The reason I ask this question is that humanity is marching towards tyranny courtesy of invasive surveillance technologies and a mind-set that applauds Communist China - namely the globalists and multi-billionaires who meet at Davos.
The guy was insane. It was a good thing that he had wars to occupy him. Also, genius move to let Indy play the role in the video.
I think if there hadn’t been a war, he would’ve gone off and started one.
@@TheAKgunner
Calling it, he was Gavrilo Princip. Were the two ever seen together?? 🤪
@@Paveway-chan Nope. And I doubt they knew they existed.
Indy pulled off a very convincing Adrian Carton de Wiart. Dude has some decent acting skills.
Tbh he was born to fight more likely he would have been killed by a nobody somewhere ridiculous
Wiart: *exist*
Germany: HOW MANY TIMES MUST WE TEACH YOU THIS LESSON, OLD MAN?!
"Wie oft müssen wir dir diese Lektion noch beibringen, alter Mann!?"
@@benkavin1473 AT LEAST ONCE MORE!
Wiart: Just a flesh wound
The man died in his sleep. BECAUSE DEATH HAD TO WAIT AND SNEAK UP ON HIM TO NOT GET CAUGHT!
Wiart: I didn't hear no bell
Joakim: "We're here to talk about a guy who went through hell and laughed in the face of danger."
Indy: **Machinegun noises**
Holy shit though, Joakims reaction to Indys screaming eagle impression sent me , like "God why are we friends" ,and a look of a father fed up with his sons relentless shenanigans.
I always like the Indy and Joakim videos more than the Par and Indy ones because Indy and Joakim just have a magical chemistry. It might just be because Joakim seems to be a better English speaker so he can flow with the conversation better while Par seems to need to think more about the words he uses.
They addressed Tommy’s moustache, they addressed the Tommy gun, I learned an awesome it of history…this is the best sabaton history video ever
And indy did his screaming eagle. Truly a wonderful day to be alive
@@adenkyramud5005 exactly 🤣🤣
A toast to Adrian Carton de Wiart, truly one of the maddest of the mad lads. He's like a real-life Call of Duty protagonist, only I don't think any CoD protagonists have gone through half of he went through. The sheer balls of steel that man must have had to get wounded so many times and still enjoy the war. He feels like a real-life version of the Black Knight from Monty Python, constantly telling his general "Tis but a flesh wound" so he could go back to the front. The story about the priest that he told in the episode is like something out of a comedy, as does the rest of his story. And the craziest part is that, despite everything he went through, he died in his bed at the age of 83.
A mad lad to the end, we salute thee, Carton de Wiart.
Well, there's Dimitri. He truly did.
Couldn't be said any better. Truly a man to celebrate at least with a good shot. Cheers, and bottoms up!
@@adenkyramud5005 A good shot of booze or a good shot with a weapon to some unhurt bodypart? Or both?
Monty Pythons Black knight in real life
I have a strong suspicion that he was actually the inspiration for Monty Python's Black Knight.
Certainly, he was so larger-than-life that if he hadn't actually existed, nobody would ever make him up - he is just too unbelievable as a fictional character.
I think the only thing General Carton de Wiart didn’t like about World War One was that it ended.
He sounds just like a US politician.
@@tyrannosaurusimperator With the obvious exception that Lieutenant General Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart actually DID go to war. He was just, to quote you kids, "Built different".
@@TheAKgunner This is the best use of the phrase "built different" i have ever seen :D
@@Filuminat Thank you. I minored in English Literature in college.
@@TheAKgunner I dont really understand us schoolsystem. Could you please explain what is the difference in major and minor in education? I was always confused by this and internet doesnt want to give me an answer :D.
I swear, this guy is someone's first D&D character tossed into a modern setting. He fights in anything he can, he wants glory, he feels no pain in ripping off two fingers, scarred from multiple wounds, he enjoyed the war, you can't convince me that SOMEONE hasn't made a D&D character just like that.
Edit: AWK AWK!!
I started D&D recently and was planning to base a character off of him but I based him off of King Albert I instead. But don't worry! de Wiart will make his appearance in my second campaign as his crazy ass bastard cousin.
nah my first op character had an ac of 24 at level 3, he didn't get hit that much
@@kiplingwasafurry1108 Mix zealot barbarian[barbarian for the half damage via raging and advantage in reckless attack] and champion fighter especially if you grab the indomitable feat and you could have a very sick character going on. Add half orc into the mix with the racial [similar to zealot as it can bring you up to 1 HP instead of zero until your next long rest] Feels like Adrian Carton de Wiart was a modern take on a half-orc barbarian/champion fighter multiclass the more I think about it, lol.
@@WyntheRogue I'll keep this in mind so thank you
@@kiplingwasafurry1108 No problem, also making a monk just right with their unarmed defense, their AC can go up quite a bit [also, deflect missle at level 3 is so satisfying, just be sure you have enough ki points left for monk chicanery] Kensai subclass if you want weapon proficiency.
1. Indy's screaming eagle noise might be why he got the role in the video, as his sanity may have been questioned just as de Wiart's should have been.
2. No bulli Tommy. He can't help it if his facial hair refuses to naturally grow. His quest for any facial hair, even fake hair, that suits him continues just like The Unkillable Soldier's quest to find new wars.
I think one of my favourite anecdotes from the book was when Adrian Carton de Wiart met King George V during WW1 and told him that despite fighting for Britain in several wars, he'd never become a citizen. The King was not pleased, and told him to get it sorted.
The man died in his sleep. Why? BECAUSE DEATH HAD TO WAIT UNTIL HE WAS ASLEEP TO SNEAK UP ON HIM!
This is glorious from start to finish. The nerd shirts, Tommy's Mustache (the band), shading the hell out of the fandom and their unhealthy fixation on the inaccuracy of the Thompson. It's a thing of beauty. I seriously thought Tommy and the mustache were going to be like Prince John and the mole from Men In (tight, tight) Tights. But Screaming Eagles 2? Epic. What a way to start my weekend. Got my tickets for Sept and Oct. And now this. Pärfekt!
The first production models of the Thompson were shipped to Europe in 1918. So they are a WW1 weapon.
Only the first crates arrived in France on the 11th of November.
@@ZechsMerquise195 oof. thats some ''centurion tanks in ww2" levels of technicality.
@@airplanemaniacgaming7877 I know, but I still find it funny.
i agree about the inaccuracy fixation. first off, using a tommy gun for the music video helps sell the unkillable nature of this bastard! as if this group of german soldiers in particular were trying to hunt him down. pump him full of lead (what the tommy is infamous for) and see him try to walk it off! and the mad lad actually does!
Indy not talking about Adrian's service in WWII, which was just as eventful as his time served in WWI, makes me feel like they have another song planned for the maddest of lads
Or they will do part 2 of this video :)
You could make a trilogy for this madlad.
This dude was an absolute badass; shot in the eye, ripped off his own fingers, eventually had his arm amputated, shot in he torso... That's not counting the plane crashes, escapes, and so on.
All after he served in Africa, and he went back to fight during WWII.
Don’t forget he got shot in the balls.
Also two "minor" wars whilst he was on Poland
And during WWII, he managed to escape from a POW camp for eight days in Italy in '43....which was actually an accomplishment given that he was the farthest thing from inconspicuous there was. He had one eye, one arm, was exceedingly tall, and didn't speak a word of Italian.
Imagine if he fought in the Korean War
This man is practically a Call of Duty protagonist.
No he is I think the closest irl you can get to cod protagonist. Bro got shot in the arm and in the nuts and then immediately said I’m gonna conscript to the British army this time
Adrian Carton de Wiart: I’m invincible!
His Superior Officer: You’re a looney.
Adrian Carton De Wiart: "what's the difference"
Adrian Carton de Wiart: So a invincible looney!
DeWiart:That's not a no
He was a general. Not too many superiors left.
BRITAIN: We can't send in a soldier with an eyepatch! You can't intimidate enemies with an eyepatch!
EVERY PIRATE EVER: AVAST YE SCURVY SWABS!!
Finally! The worst part of a new Sabaton album is having to wait for the history videos to be made.
I can’t wait for Lady of the Dark!
I can’t wait for Valley of Death as well
Oh my, how I'd love to watch part 2 of this man's history! And of course YOU HAVE TO MAKE THE LAST BATTLE MOVIE!
That movie can only be made if The Last Battle is played somewhere. Maybe over the end credits? It's against international law to do otherwise.*
* Source: Dude, trust me
@@lilwyvern4 I like the source that you gave
@@lilwyvern4 and in the trailer too
@@lilwyvern4 I don't need to trust you to think that's true.
One thing to say about the man, he most definitely blurred the line of bravery and madman to nonexistent 🤣 a bizarre story that's for sure!
Can't say enough how much I miss these videos on a regular basis. Besides the beautiful chemistry and hilarious banter the guys have, as a team you have done a wonderful job on the production of these videos. I really hope you're all proud of the work you do, because it's always a highlight to my day when I get a notification on Patreon. Keep up the great work! 🥰🤘
The history is fun and Sabaton has made it fun to the nth degree. Thank you, thank you very much for making the kids feel interested in reading and analyzing the story.
I am a history professor at the university and in each episode of Sabaton History I see that Indy (as the good historian he is) applies the scientific method of internal and external criticism of the fact. It is formidable and masterful. Congratulations and keep it up guys. Greetings from Venezuela.
Indy's right, this dude needs a movie made about him.
I can’t help but be very amazed by this very awesome dude.
Also, love that you guys pointed out that you don’t care that there’s inaccuracies in that music video. Many people were butthurt over the fact that it wasn’t a documentary
I was crying and laughing by the end of the video, this has been the best Sabaton History video! I was looking forward to this history, but the Screaming Eagle, Tommy's mustache and the Sahara memories really killed me.
We need to know what Indy says in the unkillable soldier music video at 2:18 right before he charges and is hit hit with a grenade!
Given its Indy it could literally be "Leeeroy Jenkins".
@@jeffreygoodrich1732 I accept that as fact and even Indy can not change my mind!
Something between "Come on you sons of bitches, do you wanna live forever?" and "Come out of the trenches Krauts, let's have a go!"
Sabaton couldn't stop Indy. That is impressive
Man so unkillable in war that age is the only one that could take his life
I suspect Khorne favored this madlad. Was the unkillable soldier's DNA used when creating the Primarchs is the new question...
Even that what's a pretty long.
Indy making a film about the battle of Castle Itter? I definetly would pay for this!
indy's performance in the music video was awesome!! I loved to see it
It was indeed 😎
I know it’s only covering his accomplishments of WW1, but I do hope that, in the future, Indy does take a look at and tell us about Adrian’s accomplishments and stories in the other wars he fought in. As a sort of sequel to this video.
17:48
Oh my. Was that supposed to be Indy mimicking a Pelican or perhaps a goose or Carton DE Viart's screens in pain when he was shot but he still kept on coming back for more?? 😂😂.
Very nice historical analysis and interview guys. Keep on the great work. Greetings from 🇬🇷🇬🇷.
It’s a callback to an earlier video on this channel. That’s why Indy says “screaming eagles, part 2”
I'll tell you what, the music video was so much fun. Indy was hamming it up so much. Honestly, it got to a point where when I listened to the song without the video and my first thought was "this isn't nearly as fun without Indy goofing around."
Seriously, Indy, I think you need to have a liscense for that much ham.
Yep. He was having way, way too much fun the first quarter of the video. A bit ahistorical though. Ministry of silly walks didn't even exist at this time period. :p
Not sure what I’m happier about. The new album, or the new Sabaton history episodes that will come from it.
No need to choose!
@@SabatonHistory thank god for that
Sir Adrian Carton de Wiart was one of the bravest men ever to live! The fact that he kept coming back to the fight is amazing!
Indy looks like he had fun making the music video
Caron de Wiart: "Permission to throw my life away in a tactically futile grand gesture that would be absurd in a Boy's Own periodical, sah?"
Colonel: "Denied, you lunatic."
CdeW: * huffs *
CdeW: "How bout I do anyway?"
Unrelated but I like Joakims shirt, I never thought I’d see my favorite inventor Nikola Tesla mixed with my favorite band
Oh I’m so happy to find this. I have missed my updates from The Great War so much. One of the best RUclips series ever !!
It's always a good moment to get back on track ;)
Thanks a lot for supporting our channel!
This absolute hero and madlad had a plot armor. There’s no other way of explaining that.
Now we need a song about Jack Churchill
very cool story
Indy, it's been a while. I think it's time for a part 2 covering de Wiart's exploits in WWII.
I also loved the historical inaccuracies in that video because it just added to the insane story of this guy, like it was all born out of his mad imagination/memories of the war.
And YES why do we not have a film about The Last Battle? Seriously. And if Indy's screaming eagle impression could be in it somewhere that would be even better ;)
You can always tell they have a blast together. And it's awesome every time
This was one of my favorite songs in the album as well as the story. Just amazing!
I have been awaiting this video since I first heard the song. This man quickly has become one of my new heroes
Ew a furry
I really like the panzer 3 scale model that occasionally shows up in the foreground.
his book (happy odyssey) is an awesome read.. i picked it up because of the song... the book is on a whole different level
It’s 3 AM over here on the east coast but I can absolutely stay up to watch this
I just saw the War to End All Wars movie at the museum today. The Unkillable Soldier section had me laughing my ass off. Amazing job boys.
Amazing! Happy you enjoyed it and thanks for the positive feedback!!
So happy you brought up the Thompson not actually being in WW1, I saw that and was like wait a minute that missed the war by like two weeks or something
I bought his autobiography because of this song, and I highly recommend it. His perspective is definitely unique, if nothing else.
I've been waiting for this! I literally had to originally go to the most recent WW2 video to tell Indy how much I loved his portrayal of the "Unkillable Soldier." Like, guys, I laughed so hard through the video and how cheeky and satirical it was. Indy ATE in his performance. And just chewed the scenery to bits with his overacting. Everyone in the band did well too. I, internally, call this MV: "the one where Sabaton band members try desperately to kill their historian, but he is like some ridiculous, eldritch phantom who JUST. WON'T. DIE."
Joakim with the UF PRO Striker XT Pants looks so amazing!!!
I have awaited this longer than the hundred years war
I would LOVE if Sabaton and Indy produce movies or offered music for historical war films
Still think that Indy needs an Oscar for his acting for his acting in the video.
Hell yes!
Great to see you guys back in action for the new album!
tommy, the mean 40year old angry german using a tommy gun hmmm
He's a measure of what attitude can do.
I feel like they can do an entire album about this man's life
Hell I wouldn't have wanted to be around him. Death followed him like the plague!!
Enjoyed your video and I gave it a Thumbs Up as a support
So, how was shooting the video for 7 pillars?
Andy: Terrible, and we almost got killed.
Joakim: Frankly, I had enjoyed the shoot.
Oh my god, he did the AWK AWK again! I still have that clip!
I still love how he constantly appeals being removed from the front lines like it’s a punishment haha
This has become one of my favorite Sabaton songs. I love the tempo and energy.
We're happy you appreciate it Clyde, thank you!
Adrian Carton de Wiart was a warrior with great courage, his story great and adventurous, amazing episode🔥🔥❤️❤️🤘🤘
How have they not made a movie about this man???
This is an amazing song, but my heart will always belong to "The Last Battle". But I agree with Mr.Niedel. There should be a movie about "The Last Battle" and you guys should play it live on stage at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, September 15.
See you all there.
There kind of is. The film "Castle Keep" from 1969 is loosely based on the battle at Castle Itter.
There will likely never be a movie about The Last Battle, and it is because it is not politically advantageous to talk about it. Germans being on the good side for once during WW2? No, we can’t have that!
That being said, if us fans got together and created our own script, created the movie, and talked to Sabaton about being in it/a part of the production, then it could happen.
I hope they play it on Cincinnati on Oct. 8th.
Brave? Crazy?
Yes.
ok were do i sign up for having indy doing this incredible story as a movie? seriusly this man was a real CHAD, almost dying from every wound and yet, he enjoyed the war. what a legend.....
Paper cuts make me cry.
I have been waiting for this video for so long. I’m so happy it came out and I am not disappointed at all.
Quite frankly, I enjoyed this video
12:20 ‘The video is great video, should go watch now, BYE BYE’
That caught me off guard 😂
I've been waiting for this for what feels like ages, i love that sabaton not only puts out amazing music, but tells a story, one that when i come here i get to learn about some serious badass men and women who otherwise its unlikely i'd never have heard of. Looking forward to the breakdowns of the war to end all wars!
That random eagle scream at the end, thank you my sides are now killing me, ya... 🤣🤣

If it doesn't kill my it well make my stronger.
I adore everything about this video 💕 So nice to see you back on screen 🤗
I didn’t expect Screaming eagles, but here it is
I can't thank you enough for this. This song and this history lesson has just made my day.
Sabaton history is back!!

Good thing there was a World War to keep this guy busy. Who knows what else he would have done with his spare time.
So excited for these new episodes for the new album!
Why is the video unlisted?
Screaming eagle performed by Indy... We all wasn't prepare for this, but we all need it 😁
Gosh, I love this channel sooo much!!!
If you would like to cover another unkillable soldier, I would suggest looking into the man who inspired the character of Saichi 'Immortal' Sugimoto from the manga and anime 'Golden Kamuy', Hiroshi Funasaka. He was a Japanese soldier who served in the Second World war, most prominantly during the Battle of Angaur. His personal story is covered in the book 'Falling Blossoms' which was written by Funasaka himself.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing 🤘
Spent the last two weeks or so thinking about what the next episode was gonna be on, stoked that it’s on one of my favorites from the album
An incredible narrative. I have shared it with several friends!
Totally agree with Indy, there should be a major movie about the events of the Last Battle song!
This was such a good episode, enjoyed the post-history segment a lot.
He didn't die; he just got tired of this war and went on to the next one.
How do you like my Whitebeard unkillable Soldier video?
