Carolus Rex Karl XII was famous for his words: "My Will Be Done". He didnt listen to his advisors - he said repeatedly after they spoken: "No MY will be done!" He is very famous of this words. He was 15 years old when he became King and he spend almost his entire adolt life on the fields with his army. He also refused to marry.
When it comes to our monarchy here in Sweden I’m personally proud of it and it’s a part of our history and culture. The monarchy here doesn’t have any power anymore but they do represent us abroad.
It is debatable, officially they don't have powers, but it more that they don't use it, our monarch is still the highest rank in the military as admiral and överbefälhavare. Would a general deny an order, if it was ever given, by our monarch? I don't know lol, I don't think it will ever happen, just saying that he still have rank and would the military listen for respect or rank and would they obey monarch over regeringen if it ever came to such a choice? I have no idea what others would do, but I, personally, would obey our monarch. ofc I doubt it will ever happened, someone catastrophic would have had to happen for him to step in
Why would we want to be represented abroad by these less than impressive royals? Power to the people!

The Bernadotte dynasty are just traitor of the french back to napoleon but karl XII wasn't from Bernadotte dynasty so it's fine.
I think a lot of people are interested in the monarchy in the same way we are interested in Game of Thrones, but more so in the "old" kings in the Vasa lineage. Shortly after Carlous Rex the monarchy changed and has been made up by foreign european families, while before that it was a lot more mythical and epic what with our time as an empire etc. The current royal family is generally seen as harmless, people in general may complain that they get a bunch of tax payer money but most people still like having them there even if they are just powerless figure heads. The current swedish king is very sympathetic and relatable, being a dyslexic party guy with a bit of a stutter and a taste for fast cars.
The Royal family is an excellent political tool, they are worth the little money they get to spend on maintaining the properties they manage.
Not to mention our current king is just all around a "hoity toity" dude. Check out the interview he stopped because he saw a cute cat and demanded that the crew filmed the cat for him haha, and his nice collection of hats too!
As an American it's interesting to me to even remember that many nations still have monarchs. Almost all symbolic by this point, but hey. I've also seen somebody argue that America should, in fact, basically have a similar figurehead monarch. Or rather, that by combining the roles of Head of Government (prime minster) and Head of State (monarch) into the figure of a single President, we've put a lot of duties that conflict with each other into each other and given one single person way too much power. Our commander in chief has to handle both state dinners and drone bombing, and either of those are a lot for anyone, much less all the old people we seem to keep electing. Just some thoughts.

Im not one who loves the concept of monarchs but if we need to have one then i guess we could do worse.
The frase "on youre knees" in the swedish version in the corus is totaly wrong tranlated, it should have been knee to knee witch referes to how tight the horses ride.
As i see it swedes in general are proud of the monarks, and specialy Karl XII since he was our warrior/hero-king, witch is kinda weird since he was the king who lost the swedish empire. Another thing thats crazy is that the swedish right wing extremists have taken Karl XII as a symbol. See more of this about this in Sabaton History channel.
the real warrior king was Gustav II Adolph, who Sabaton also made a song about, "the leion from the north"
The Lion and Karl X/XI built and defended the great swedish kingdom and the "warrior king" lost it - even more fun since the rightwing and racists embrace this king so hard is that he spend about 4 years in the otoman empire (in bender now i think yjat is in ukraine) and when he came home he brought with him a lot of turkish things like Dolmas (called kåldolme in sweden basicly the same) and i think coffe (sweden drink second most coffe per capita after finland)
Sing carolus sonng is refering to a story that when he first had weapons fired upon him in war in denmark he proclaimed that the sounds of guns and canons should be his song.
This is a great song and the Swedish "empire" in itself is a fascinating subject. One error in the translation though is when it says "on your knees". It should rather say "knee by knee" (knä om knä), alluding to the carolean way of fighting.
Yes and Engliah equivalent of "knee by knee" would be "shoulder to shoulder"

Was just about to comment on this. Knä om knä ("knee over knee", would probably be the best translation) refers to cavalry riding in so tightly packed an formation that the riders knee touch each other. This was a formal Swedish tactic to maximize the effect of a cavalry charge.
Was a soldier for 25 years in the Swedish army, and was proud to serve our king Charles xvi Gustaf.
As a Swede the Swedish version sounds way cooler to me but it could be that I understand it but it just sound better to me.
This is the most I've had to watch my language in any video I've ever reacted to. Something about it, especially the Swedish version of it just got me amped up. I was trying to explain it in the video without getting too wild with my language. I liked the Swedish version more for some reason, even though I needed the lyrics. Maybe because the lyrics themselves were so awesome.

I really liked it too. I like the personal tone the Swedish songs in general take, although I’ve only heard two at this point.
Swede here. The monarchy here is relatively popular. When it comes to our history though it varies. Gustavus Adolphus is the king who turned Sweden into a great power. He got the title "The Great" by the parliament after his death and he is still highly respected to this day. We still celebrate the memory of his death every year on the 6th of November. Carolus Rex on the other hand (the king that this song is about) is a controversial king. Not because of what he did, ironically, but from what he represents today. Neo Nazis see him as larger than life and he gets stuck with that stigma unfornunately. Historians have flipped back and fourth regarding Carolus Rex. From praise for defending Sweden against a huge coalition to critique for causing the fall of our empire and the suffering of the country during that time. Today historians are mostly critical of his actions.
I talk about his legacy today a bit in the Sabaton history, but it’s unfortunate that his image is muddied by modern political statements. He’s definitely got a complicated legacy in general, his extreme determination is a bit of a double edged sword, but judging him based on what he’s used to symbolize, and not his actual life, seems a bit unfair.
I think you might enjoy listening to "resist and bite" I didn't know the event in this song took place and I personally find it badass.
Norwegian here. Yes, we are proud of our monarchy. The People of Norway died protecting our King in the last World War, like they've done it before. I don't know if anybody of you remember the mascots of the Lillehammer Winter Olympics in 1994? They was named Håkon and Kristin. The story tells that in the year 1204, Håkons father, King Håkon the 3rd got poisoned by the Baglers after just two years as a king. His son Håkon wasn't even born when that happened. He was protected by men called the Birkebeinere. Only a few days old , Birkebeinerne had to carry the child into safety, to secure the future of Norway. Birkebeinerne had to fight free from the Baglers. This was at winter time, and they fought Baglers and blizzard over mountains to get to safety. And in safety they came. Two man carrying a future king that would rule in 46 years.
I watched an awesome movie about that! It made me curious and I tried to find out more. (Wikipedia didn't help much). From a Swedish point of view, I've mostly read about Norway being either ruled/occupied by Danish or Swedish kings. Back in the viking era it looks like the Norwegians had more power in Scandinavia. So like I said, this story made me very curious about your history! 🇳🇴 😉

I am mostly proud of my country Poland history and rulers. Of course, there were some really bad or who made bad decissions, e.g. Konrad I of Mazovia who invited the religious military order of the Teutonic Knights to fight the Prussians which ended very hard for the country. Also the last monarch Stanisław August Poniatowski colaborating with Catharine the Great... There are quite a lot of them I like: Mieszko I, Bolesław Chrobry, Jadwiga, Władysław Jagiełło, Zygmunt Stary or Jan III Sobieski.
We've got a reach history and Joakim once in Poland said he thanks our country because we have respect to our history.
I take the opportunity to apologize for what Charles the 10th did in Poland. A completely unnecessarily shameful war that the Swedes waged against the Polish people.

I prefer the Swedish version slightly. The lyrics have been rewritten some in the different versions, to maintain a good "flow" (the translated lyrics in the swedish are abit awkardly chopped to fit compared to the rewritten english version. "On your knees" is just wrong. The phrase "knä om knä" comes from the tactical formation the Caroleans employed in battle, massively increasing their effectiveness and mobility making smaller sized forces scare off and defeat much superior numbers. You marshed forwards knee-to-knee. With the backline shooting through). The swedish one gives me more goosebumps and is abit more raw. But the english version is alot better as a storytelling song. Basically a biography of Charles XII of the Great Swedish Empire.

I am Swedish and of Course the Swedish version have more feelings in it for us. Is not exactly same meaning of the text in the Swedish and the English versions.
The goverment in sweden do want to get rid of the monarchy for some reason, but us the people refuse. They are something we are proud of having. They dont have power other than being representatives towards foraign dignitivs. But that doesnt matter, most swedish people would still to this day probably rally around the king if he were to call for arms
The monarchy in Sweden (and many other places) has changed a lot over the years. After Karl XII (Charles XII/Carolus Rex) in the early 1700s, the monarchy had to become less autocratic in favour of the parliament. In the late 1700s, Gustav III gathered more power but that made him impopular with the nobility and he was murdered. His son was kicked out after waging a disaterous war against Russia, and during the 1800s the power of the monarchy succesively diminished. In the 1900s the social democrats became the dominating political power and they were technically pro-republic, but a compromise was made where the royal family gave up all political power and in return the social democrats and the liberal party agreed not to actively strive for a republic. The former communist party however, brings up the question of abolishing the monarchy for a vote in the parliament every year. The current royal family has fairly solid public support, especially the crown princess. When it comes to the warfaring kings of the past, the opinion tend to vary with political views.

This is a very impressive song but also very very scary if you stop to think about it. The King, Carolus Rex (Karl XII), pretty much declares himself the next highest power on Earth after God. Whatever he commands is the Word of God and so shall it be. His soldiers will kill anyone that resists, burn the countryside and raze towns that displease him - or face the Judgement of God through his servant Carolus Rex.
I know that Swedes often think he was a great warrior king defending his country, but most of his wars were outside Sweden. He fought the Germans, the Poles, the Russians in order to keep the Swedish possessions on the southern and eastern sides of the Baltic Sea - justified, granted, since they had come to Sweden through war. But he also spent a lot of Swedish subjects in his wars, impoverished the realm and left a great big mess to clean up after his death. The Swedish Empire was overextended and underpopulated and just couldn't sustain the wars.
I’ve talked a couple of times about how he is an incredibly difficult king to rank for me in the Swedish empire. Because his rashness was a positive early on, but his unwillingness to let go or see the reality of his domestic issues later on puts the country in such a terrible place. So I understand what you mean. Looking back it certainly looks like his rule hurt the domestic population.
I think there is some sort of pride here in Sweden regarding the old monarchy tales, but that is mainly spurred on by old heroic tales of great kings and queens, and also by how it's been a long time since then. I think we all know that, in comparison to the democracy of today, the old monrachy was in fact a rather terrible thing, and a lot of these great wars that we to some level idolize, we also know where great catastrophes that largely effected the peasant population.
It's like how a lot of people can agree that the Mongolian Horde did terrible things, but we can also acknowledge that from a sort of entertaining historical level, we still like them in that way. It's like that, but with a stronger cultural attatchement to it.
The 3:rd in line for the Swedish Crown, Princess Estelle is a metal head, so I hope this song will reach her.

As a swede I would say we don't talk too much about having a king or not in general. Our king or throne lost it's political power in the 70s if I'm not mistaken and has been replaced in the Riksdag (parlament) by the Talman (speaker). Karl XII is also known as the "Heroic king" but has been labled by leftist populists as "far right" related how that is possbile due to the amount of years between his lifetime and AH ruling over Germany is far beyond my understanding and Sabaton took some unfair hits for that album aswell. However the throne itself and the crown is what matters and not the person in the end. I suggest that you take a look at "Livgardet" / "The royal guard" also by Sabaton for more ear candy in regards of the subject. Thank you for your reaction and keep them comming :)

Not quite true about leftist labeling him as far right.
For some reason neo-nazis in Sweden used Charles XII as a symbol, celebrating his death the 30th Of November every year. People started to relate him with right wing extremists for that reason.

Austrian here. Republic now, once an Empire with the size of Texas....i guess....we kinda like it existed but are also ok with it being over. We are, kinda....monarchists in a historical sense...if that makes sense to you guys.

It's a complex topic.
And is as divided as you might expect.
In general, to show pride in swedish history and inheritance is somewhat frowned upon. As this basically have been tainted by over-zealous fools on the far right.
This has become so sensitive that a show of swedish patriotism, no matter how small, might brand you a nazi.
And i can definitely see why.
Many of these extreme elements basically worship Carl XII As a saint for their cause.
But i have to admit.
There is a flame of pride that burns like a star in my heart while listening to this song, or any other from this album!

The right name is Karl the 12:th, Carolus is just a Latin version of the name, in English it would be Charles like in Charlestown

Napoleon also implemented the present dynasty of royals in what was left of Sweden, installing one of his generals, Jean Baptiste Bernadotte, known to have written (a few years before becoming the swedish king) "Republican by principles and conviction, I will, to my own death, fight all royalists". Whoops.

I believe the majority of us norwegians are happy with our current monarchs, King Harald and Queen Sonja. Our monarchy is not as "old" as a lot of other european monarchies. Norway have been ruled by both Sweden and Denmark on and off over the course of history and when we gained our independence from Sweden in 1905 we asked Prince Carl of Denmark to be our truly own King (and he accepted and became King Haakon VII).
The movie "The King's Choice" depicts the darkest hours of our nation during the Nazi invasion of Norway and the great escape of King Haakon and the government into exile in Great Britan as well as the refusal to "bend the knee" to Hitler. He was much loved by the norwegian people back then.
His son, King Olav, reigned as a "People's King," and became extremely popular. He liked to drive his own cars, and would drive in the public lanes, even though as a monarch he was allowed to drive in bus lanes. When driving was restricted during the 1973 energy crisis, King Olav, who could have driven legally, wanted to lead by example; while preparing for a skiing trip, he dressed up in his skiing outfit and boarded the Holmenkollbanen suburban railway carrying his skis on his shoulder. When later asked how he dared to go out in public without bodyguards, he replied that "he had 4 million bodyguards" - the population of Norway was at the time 4 million.
So, a young kingdom are we and the "national pride" in our monarchs have dwindled a fair bit. Though, as stated, a lot of people still hold the King and Queen in high regard and their son, Prince Haakon is fairly well liked.
Fun fact: Carolus Rex aka King Charles XII died when he was hit in the head by a projectile during his invasion of Norway at the siege of Fredriksten fortress in the modern day city of Halden.

From Denmark, one of the oldest monarchies. There is definately a deepheld pride and generally positive view. Especially because our royal family is pretty down to earth... Even "ambushed" our Queen and her escort, along with some friends, while she was taking a stroll at her vacation estate xD we just wanted to say hi. the security hesitantly let us through :P

Im Danish and we have a Queen here, well today the rules is made by the goverment right, the royal family nowadays are more like role models, doing charity, at least here in Denmark thats how it works, and i think they are good ambasadeurs for Denmark, but its a divided quistion here to, some think its just a waste of money, but i dont agree..

Here in my country we had monarchy for hundreds of years and we had nazi occupation and communist regime in one century and are now democratic parliamentary republic and wouldnt go back but our history and especially our greatest King Charles/Karel IV. Who conquered with peace and without death and made our kingdom not just geographical but political and economical center of Europe and ushered us in golden age is highly respected he was also at the same time King of Poland and Holy roman emperor.

The translation on the Swedish version isn't great to be honest. The part that stuck out the most would be "knä om knä" translated to "on your knees". This gives it the wrong impression. Knä om Knä would be closer to Knee to Knee, referring to the Caroleans riding in close formation knee to knee.
I am Swedish and i actually prefer this in English. But as for the songs from this album i think this might be the only one where i prefer the English lyrics.

When Russian ships and drones contested Sweden a week or so ago, I put this album on as I readied my gear incase I would get called in by the Homeguard (our national guard you could say). The swedish army very much to this day serves and fights for the crown

It's not invasion that is our concern. Allthough it can't be ruled out concerning the island of Gotland. The real issue we face are ships deploying drones that spy on our facilities or minisubs that can deploy special forces on our soil. So naturally, we can't allow foreign aircraft spy on us, and deffinately not have foreign troops sneaking around our installations.

I think most of us are happy with the monarchy. If you are more outwardly "left" then you will show more hatred, but average folk and moderates don't mind it at all and even take some pride.
In Sweden both the extreme right and left lies about Karl XII. He was not a nazi in the 1700s or a multicultural King either. He was just a guy defending the legacy from his father and grandfather Karl XI and Karl X Gustav. So both sides are wrong about Karl XII. I'll respect him for defending my country for 18 years and the right to be a free Swedish peasant and not a Danish or Russian serf./Swede🇸🇪
That’s why I try to stray away from politics on the channel. I want to deal with historical facts and truths, not a history that morphs towards what society believes today. I talk about this a little more in the sabaton history I think for this song.

I don't know about all Europe, but I do still talk with cousins in Sweden. By and large, I would say that monarchy is regarded as a curiosity -- a vestige of a bygone era. Religion too. Monarchy and religion buttressed each other. When one failed, they both collapsed. I don't know which one went first. War had a lot to do with it, probably. My great uncle used to say that "There may be no Atheists in foxholes, but seeing the aftermath can change one's mind." He fought in the U.S. Army in North Africa. ••• Thanks for the video. PEACE!!!

My opinion from Finland, land that belonged to so called Swedish Imperium, is that almost all Finns are happy that we dont have kings anymore. When Finland became independent 1917, there was a movement to make our land a kingdom by bringing a German prince to be our king. Instead we choose Presidency with more power than most presidents during that time. In Finland this so called Swedish Imperium time is considered problematic, because basis of our civic society was founded during that time, but our mainland was devastated by Russians when our men where fighting abroad. So there is sentiment in Finland that Swedish Imperium collapsed because there was no more Finnish blood to spill.
Actually I heard that the German prince was king for a short while but he didn’t even make it to Finland before he renounced the throne.
And he was elected as king if my memory serves me right.
I agree your lands (since Finland wasn’t a thing at the time and technically was Sweden) suffered and were torn a lot back in the day both because of Sweden attacking Russia and Russia attacking us definitely true and a shame.
Finland or so called Österbotten contributed a lot to our Stormaktstid but our empire died when we lost the Baltic countries that was the end for us losing Österbotten was just kicking on a dead corpse because that’s what we were.
You definitely were a significant part in our armies and helped us on the field of battle but most in the army were still Swedish.
Hopefully from now on and forever we will have everlasting friendship as Nordic countries excepts when it comes to sports than blood shall flow. Regards from a swede.

Carolus is latin I guess, Charles english but we just say Karl XII. Historically everyone has always loved our kings for the most part, we haven't had any terrible kings really that treated the people poorly. We just hated danish kings😅 Nowadays they're just there though they don't do anything really, our king today Karl XVI Gustaf Bernadotte is funny as hell though. Never serious.

@@rayceofhistory well first of all it has been good in history with monarchy countries was moving forward and created banks, schools and military to mention some things.
Then there is that other political parties cant really stop anything like it is today where politicians down vote something because its not their ideologies and if you have a monarch you will know where to turn if something is wrong with the country and you will know he is not financed by people and has paid opinions like politicians. There was of course parties back then also that discussed politics and laws and so on but the king took final decisions, of course i cant say its same in all countries that had monarchy.
Then there is that its more natural to have one leader two if you count the queen or the other way around if its a Queen that is state of head and rule. Politics today with all the voting is just a false belive that they are free or something like that

I like the Swedish version I think more than the English. The language itself sounds kind of Germanic to someone who speaks essentially only English, like kind of forceful or aggressive like German sounds. But that’s just to my untrained ear.

You have to remember that Sweden has been under socialist ruling for 100 years. And you probably know how popular history is in socialist countries.
Interest in Swedish history in Sweden is very frowned upon by our authorities. If you are interested in Swedish history you get instantly labeled a nazi, even if your interest is objective and neutral.
You have to prove that you are against those you read or talk about.
Sabaton is very objective and put no moral or political values in their lyrics yet they were labeled nazis when they began to gain fans. Since then they have made songs about communists and Jews and toured in Israel so now they have lost that nazi branding and upgraded by authorities to just being ridiculed. Alot of Swedes are interested in our history but it's hard. You can't really study it in any serious matter at our universities because of the socialist agenda. If you want to study Vikings there are no academic translations of source material, but you can get it in english from the UK.
