So on top of the other comments here, the interesting part that is reflected in the lyrics and might be overlooked is that the Caroleans had a very fatalistic outlook on life and death, judging everything to be predetermined and actually believing the world to work according to god's will. The fact that they were all so indoctrinated in this world view meant that they were able to be extremely courageous in the battle line and enact the tactic of advancing until they could see the white of their enemies eyes: In their mind, they were convinced that if god willed this to be the day of their death, then so be it, nothing could change that. It was already predestined, told in heaven and therefor enacted on earth. It was of course not the only thing that made them brave, but without this belief I doubt anyone could have made a fighting force that advances through the volleys, unfazed by their friends dying beside them. This enabled them to be extremely effective shock troops and the ratio of casualties were often extreme, with only a couple of hundred Caroleans falling while killing literally thousands.

You kind of had to be religious when starvation was just a bad harvest away and a plague of some kind could kill friends and family at any time.
On the battlefields of the time with men dropping left and right seemingly at random and you wondering if/when it's your turn it would be hard not to catch religion if you didn't already have it.

    • @vakistania
      @vakistania 2 года назад +6

@@PlanetaryDefense Definitely, that's why I'm highlighting the fatalist approach of these soldiers. It's one thing to feel that god is great and things happen for a reason and another to believe that god micromanages every little event and that each person's life is written stone. It was a very fanatic type of christian belief that goes above and beyond just faith in general, and while it wasn't unheard of to interpret christianity like this historically it was far from the norm. Most western cultures historically believed that some events were fated and that god was all powerful, but to the extent of marching straight into bullets without blinking was far from common.

Then the first wolley was done, after that the swedes went forward another 25 meters before shooting 2 wolleys and then ran into melee. This tactics was very effective.

The chorus of this song is my favourite as well, and one of the reasons for it is that putting the Lord's prayer in there creates an extremely powerful visual for me. I can see in my mind's eye how having those words always in their minds could make those soldiers strong, implacable, fearless, and feeling bound to a power much greater than the mortal armies that they encountered. I can see how people who believed so strongly could be moved into serenely marching on even into death, and it's such a strong and extremely tragic picture. Thanks for reacting to this video!

Divided into civilian duty and military duty. The training is between 6 and 15 months (starts after graduation from high school).

Modern day "Värnplikt" was written into law in 1873, but It really took into effect in the world wars. Basically because we could not afford to fund a standing army anymore. Before that we had sort of military serf that were awarded some land to live off in exchange for military service. And before that we are basically in Viking era when everyone were rallied to fight to survive.
The law did not change, but less people were called for service by the turn of the millennia. I was among 10% of the male population back in 2003. Later we had a few years when nobody were called for training. (But the law remained).
The law is quite similar to present day Ukraine, we are mandated to stay and fight for Sweden, or to do other tasks that is needed to have a functional society to maintain the war effort. How that law is to be enforced in war-time is another matter.
In Sweden the officers are employed professional soldiers, and back when Värnplikt was big, their main task was to train Värnpliktiga soldiers. As Värnpliktig you serve for 7-15 months in training and then 10 years in reserve. (10 years after training you are considered spent, but the law stipulates you should in case of war still go to your job and make sure Sweden continues to work despite the war, it is also a good assumption you will be a more valuable civilian asset 10 years after you completed your military training than a military asset)

Sweden still have madatory military service for atleast one year. We stopped it for about 20 years, but recently started it agein. After the goverment realiced that the wast majority of the people who had gone trough it where in their 50 and 60s. And the other majority who had not where from 18 to 45s. And in case of war, that's werry bad statictics. Made even worse that most of those who had gone trough the service ,where whorn out, elderly guys who where in bad conditions (Overwheight). And probably would be pretty much useless in war. War is for the young who can run, jump, climb and fight whit out much issiues. Not for older people who struggle walking up stairs because of worn out knees, and huge back issiues from work accidents.
So they made it mandatory agein. But it's not like serving in the US military. You just learn the command structure, how to handle the weapons and equiptment. And how to do as told, when told. ANd a bit more. But essentially just the basics. Then there are the full military service for 4+ years, where you become a full time solider, where you get mutch more indepth training and an acual salary. And you get to chose what part you want to work whit in. Ex Infantry, cavalery, navy, airforce ect. + also got the option to go for the carrier brance of becoming an officer.

That’s an interesting distinction that I hadn’t really considered. I sort of assumed that Sweden commonly used “Fatherland”, but that might just be from videos like this that gave me that impression.

@@rayceofhistory It must have something to do with the chorus held in the morning and evening at each Swedish troop and consisted of a psalm verse being sung before and after a prayer, which was read by someone among the crew. After the end of the service, the commander called out the Warman's Prayer "God save the king and the fatherland!", which was repeated by the troop. In the Swedish navy, the squad replies "God hear it".

The perspective of this song is how the carolean soldiers where indoctrined "soldiers of jesus/god etc.)" Even in lesser numbers against their foes they still marched into war and won many battles. As a swede this song is so powerful! Also all the companies where from the same countys. "Närke/värmland kompaniet etc." They where even from same village. To make a strong bound beetween each others.

The translation wasn't that great for the swedish version. Small details that they got wrong. Like "Morale and faith unites" not unite (and the font does not make it easy to tell that's a t) or "to curse God's name results in death", the more literal translation could be misunderstood.
Of course it also doesn't capture the "poetry" at all, though it's mostly serviceable.

Du har rätt. Svenska låter likasom tyska, speciellt om det handlar om uttal eller sprackuttryck. Eftersom Sabaton är ett svenskt band kan de författa texter enklare på svenska än på engelska. - You are right. Swedish sounds similar to german especially if it comes to pronunciation or phrases that a language contains. Because of Sabaton is a swedish band, they can write their lyrics more easily in swedish than in english. - The english translations in this album are sometimes a compromise to their english speaking audience. You can also watch the "sabaton history channel" for more information.

Both are great, but I think I prefer the Swedish version of this album even more. Maybe it’s because it’s about Sweden, by Swedes, or maybe I just think it sounds better. But I have had a few Swedish friends that have translated some video captions for me so that I can watch and follow along, and they’ve said how it’s hard at times to find exact translations so they just kind of generally give me the idea of what’s trying to be said.
The Sabaton history’s I’ve seen are great, a metal band taking a subject a ton of people find boring and putting it out to the masses through music is brilliant to me. Adding history background in the Sabaton history series is just them being extra awesome.

The Caroline soldiers were crazy, I had the pleasure to visit the battle field at Poltava and the war museum
    The Russians was 120 000 men against 35 000 Caroline’s
Sadly it was a officer who made an error that’s why the sweds lost
A church was built to the honors of the dead soldiers and the cool part of that church is that half of the church has text and writings in Russian and the other half is in Swedish

Not many know that Sweden suffered crop failures along the lines of the Irish potato famine. There was terrible overreach from the church into the micro affairs of families. Children of those in debt or the indigent could be taken and sold to the lowest bidder -- lowest, that is, in the amount the buyers would bill the state for their care annually. It was common for fishermen not to own the house, or the anchorage where they kept their boats. My great great grandfather had to call his landlord "master." To this day, no one can just start a business by just renting a shop and hanging out a shingle. Only a set number of business licenses are allowed to exist. Unlike here, you have to buy... say, a tobacco shop with its license, then hire a lawyer to convert it to the type of shop you want to open. And, yes there was conscription. All this in a time when America's doors were wide open to Northern Europeans. At 17, my great grandfather signed a contract with a farmer in Illinois to work for 5 years as a farm hand in return for paid passage. When he told his father, his father went to a drawer and turned around with a single shot pistol. My grandpa thought for a moment he was going to be shot. But his father, instead, wished him well, handed him the pistol, and told him to take it with him to America. ...My cousins in Sweden are still pissed about that. They want it back for a display in a fishing museum. Good luck with that. ••• That was long. Sorry. ••• Thanks! PEACE!!!

I mean.... It sounds different because maybe its closer to their heart? It is their (our) history after all. This was our last king with power. And he is quite controversial in our country too. For all the wrong reasons, but none the less.
I love the swedish versions because the lyrics are perfect. But english versions are good too.
And about the swedish conscription/drafting, it had gone back for a loooooooong time in a similar fashion, but what we have to this day is from this time in history. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscription_in_Sweden
During the Viking age we had something called (in english) Leidang --> en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leidang
I guess that would be what we had up until the 16-1700.
