The canon 85 1.4 is my favorite lens to shoot with. I use it for portraits and street photography. As a person who doesn’t like zooms this lens gives me the reach i sometimes need when im on the streets.
Love your humility and such a great person. You are right, it's not about the latest gear. A lot of photographers now just want the latest and greatest and forget that it's about the photographer, not the equipment.
I know the 5D mark 4 is a workhorse, but the RF L lens are amazing, worth getting mirrorless for them. I just picked up the 85mm 1.2 and it blows my mind, you almost want to turn the sharpness down, the detail is next level and focuses fast and sharp wide open, but it is heavy at 1.2 kg The other gr8 thing with mirrorless is you see the exposure in the viewfinder.
This was so helpful! I've been using a 50mm for ages now because I've just been so uncertain on what to get next. Thanks so much for inspiring me to start my photography channel
Jessica, ALL of my lenses are used. The outside casing might have some wear, but the glass is impeccable. Buying used has given me the opportunity to have lenses I would not be otherwise able to afford new.
I have three questions: 1. Why do you have an RF 24-105 if you use 5DIV? 2. Why don't you use any filters. 3. How is your quarantine going? P. S. Thank you for your vids, I get a lot of useful information here ♡♡♡
Hey Jessica, do not get pressured into changing camera systems for the sake of change. You won't see any difference in image quality, and your clients most certainly will not. I made the jump from DSLR to full frame mirrorless several years ago now, and while the new AF systems in them are helping me greatly, I am not seeing any major difference in image quality at all especially when it comes to stills. I am always happy to see you making magic with your 5Dmk IV. Glass matters, not camera bodies.
@jessica great setup, love the shots taken with the 35mm 1.4!! PS : that 24-105mm it’s an RF lens for the mirrorless system, can’t work on a dsrl body, if you are not planning to upgrade soon may be better sell it before it looses value!
girllll , I can’t get over how pretty you are! your videos are honestly so inspiring and motivational that I finally decided to start my own RUclips channel, so thank you so much for being such an inspiration!!
I like the kit you have. You made the right choice by getting the 85 mm f1.4 instead of the f1.2. Try out your 24-105 mm f4 lens; f4 is one stop from f2.8 and it has IS...unlike your Canon 24-70 f2.8. You might have to dial up the ISO in failing light, but depending on the light, you can handhold it as you get some stops back with the IS. It is a handy lens to have if you are out taking a wide variety of pictures or if you are just taking snapshots with the family.

I have a gut feeling you'll be switching to Mirror-less when the R5 comes out! Especially when they release the full specs; still specs more specifically if it turns out amazing.
I have and use that 300mm lens you have in the box! It's my work camera owned by my wildlife/animal facility for shots of distant animals and small birds, etc. I love it so much! It is the absolute best lens I have ever encountered for bird photography especially! It is also great for focusing through mesh or fencing to photograph animals on the other side of that. As in, you can't see the mesh in the shot. I would say the only thing it makes difficult is focusing on what I want the focus on. I have to manually focus a lot. It also seems to have a narrow field of focus. So a bird on a branch with another bird a few inches behind it. If they are far away and you're zooming a lot to shoot them, you can only ever get one bird in focus at a time. I'm still very very novice in comparison to Jessica, but those are my take aways from this lens!
The 5DIV is still a great camera, I still use a 6D sometimes but eye AF on mirrorless cameras is a game changer for portraits, especially if you shoot really wide open in natural light. Not to mention the benefits of an EVF to show you exactly what your shot will look like. My 6D is now my backup.

I love that film camera! I know now we think it seems like it takes so much longer loading the camera and developing something we could all the time digital is so quick... but I still love that camera🥰
Hey Jessica!! Would you ever consider doing a video comparing different f-stops on a lens and comparing those to your other lenses? I feel like it would be super interesting to see the different f-stops on fashion photography and the effects they have. I have a small understanding of f-stops but it’s hard to know like “hrmmm a 4.0 would be better here than the 2.8 let’s try” haha
ASA is ISO and your film canister will tell you what speed (iso) to use. Portra 400 (iso is 400), but depending on other factors you can push and pull your film. Lots of latitude with film. Looking forward to seeing more film stuff from you!
85mm is my favorite lens. People always like the photos i take with the 85 mm especially portrait... And we're talking about people who don't know anything about photography.
Been shooting big heavy cameras for over 25 years - last year I bought a Sony A7 - shot for 6 months with it and then sold it - it was like holding a toy. Now back with my Canon - but a 5d Mark iii now.
Personally I LOVE LOVE LOVE my 5DsR. Having said that I also love my EOS R which I bought specifically for tethered shooting (battery life in live view mode = killer, focus aids = killer, etc etc, works a charm with the TS-E lenses for product shots, my productivity is about 4x better). I also love have gotten to love the R for everything as the EVF is pretty decent in most situations (5DsR still better in bright light) and the focusing on the R makes all of my EOS glass better, yep DPAF is far far better/faster/perfect for everything I happen to shoot. I would never criticize anyone for their choice in gear if it works for them that's the bottom line and I really hate changing things myself. I happen to like the R better than I though I would because it actually feels very comfortable in my hands all day, something I thought wouldn't happen. To me that's way more important than most "features". One last note which is a bit snarky but I just cannot help saying pointing it out... 1. The whole, cutesie-girly I still use a 5Div and have too many things to dream about to worry about mirrorless is a COMPLETE sham put-on given that she holds up a 24-105 RF lens that will only work on an R camera = she has one, uses it, knows all about it.... 2. Or... she really has no clue and at some point she's going to attempt to mount it on the 5D... (I doubt it) In any case I have to call bullshit on some portion of this given the flagrant disconnect between the mirrorless-clueless + holding a 24-105 RF zoom form mirrorless. Really??? Really really, you just found a mirrorless canon lens in the street one day? You bought it because you thought it was for a 5D?? Yea... right....
Well I shoot weddings and appreciate the art of true manual photography. I own the 35mm Canon A1 & primarily use portra 400 film for all my work. Casually I’ll use Fuji film for street photography. My kit is simple I only use prime lenses the stunning Yashica 50mm f1.7 for portraits, SMC Super Takumar 35mm f3.5 for wide & group shots , Pentacon 135mm f2.8 for medium telephoto. Canon FD 70-200 f4 for full telephoto. My whole kit Iv been using since 1998. All can be purchased for less then £100 now. I’m pretty sure this lady’s kit is over £10K & frankly speaking her photography work is average at best with a a lot of post processing.
Great tips when investing on lenses. I owned prime sigma 35mm 1.4 and macro 100mm 2.8L IS for events. Also used 85mm 1.4 such incredible lens. Love your work
What is your second camera? Also 5d Mark IV or you go out only with one camera? If not, which focal length you use normally at a wedding on first and which focal length on second camera? On a reportage job ich have mostly 24mm at first and 70-200mm or 85mm at second camera.
Hey Jessica(or anyone that can answer for me please), I have a question for you. If you have a 24-70 lens, why would you need a 50mm lens? Isn't 50 in the range of 24-70? why spend the money for another lens if its in the range of another lens?
A prime lens (50mm) has a different mechanism than a zoom lens (24-70mm). Also, those she has are different aperture - prime is wider, faster at f/1.2 than her zoom at f/2.8. Wider aperture will give greater low light performance and bokeh.
Manisha if you want value for money you can’t go wrong with an xt30. The lenses are pricey but there are some affordable ones especially on eBay. But body only and then but the kit lens for cheap it’s really good
Also for very low budget the 50mm 1.8 is a must have. Wont be scare if you sadly drop it and broke it...like i...never...did of course. Lol love your video keep up the good work
what type of computer would u recommend for editing? does it have to be macbook or PC? I was thinking of getting a samsung galaxy s6 lite tablet but isn't sure if thats a good device to use for editing and printing pics what should I do what do u recommend I get?
I have the same camera with the EF70-200 2,8L II, but I'm looking at the EF16-35mm 2,8L III or maybe the RF 15-35mm 2,8 IS but the R5 is so expensive so maybe in the future with the mirrorless.
Photographer changes lens according to the look they are aiming for or situation. Primes lenses are fixed focal length and if you have 85mm on but have to shoot group pictures in a small room most likely you switch to wider 24, 35, mm prime lense or just use 24 to 70 zoom lense for versatility. Most of the time pros have atleasr 2 or more bodies, so they have different focal lengths on them so they dont have to keep changing lens. I work around what I have and usually end up shooting with one lens given 24 to 70 on events, while 85mm or 50 mm on portraits.
Do you ever notice your 35mm not focusing correctly? I noticed that with mine and i've heard others complain about it too. Maybe its ok with back button focusing?
Thanks for sharing Jessica, i shoot mirrorless (Shock Horror) haha but seriously love your style and videos they are great insight into you photography world. Hope you are well and stay safe :)
Really cool to see your gear! I have the 5D4 as well and the 24-70 2.8 II spends 80% of the time on my camera! :) totally agree 2nd hand lenses are really great value and there are a lot of high quality lenses in great condition available (although would only recommend getting lenses you can go see in person before buying) , I have bought a 135 f2, and an 85 1.2 second hand, and also got a 400mm for fun! As far as upgrading goes I do plan to get the R5; I already picked up a 28-70 f2, which will take the place of the 24-70, and an 85 1.2 DS! (Less light in but really unique soft bokeh!)
Regarding the 2 versions of the 85mm, I am also hesitant about which one to buy. Actually, I found some reviews where they said that the 1.4's image quality is better than the 1.2. So I think I will also choose the 1.4
Zaina Salem Nice!! I’m using the eos R but there’s something about the DSLR that I miss, I had the 5d III, I still have the 16-35f2.8 iii and 70-200 f2.8 III and i haven’t sold them cause I keep thinking about buying a 5div just so I can have that feeling

Twinsies with the camera set up 😍 you mah fave
ASA is ISO and your film canister will tell you what speed (iso) to use. Portra 400 (iso is 400), but depending on other factors you can push and pull your film. Lots of latitude with film. Looking forward to seeing more film stuff from you!
I love your film camera photographs!!
Thanks Jessica for sharing your recent gear line up
I LOVE YOU SO MUCH JESSICA! TODAYS MY BIRTHDAYYYY 😭
Hippy Burpday!.
@@wullieg7269 omg thank you.. stay safe from the covid-19 ✨✨
Faith Macoto happy birthday! 🎉🎊🎁🎂
happy birthday!!
Fun idea for after quarantine ends. Gear swap challenge. Digital camera vs film camera. Both of you use a camera you've never used before.
85mm is my favorite lens. People always like the photos i take with the 85 mm especially portrait... And we're talking about people who don't know anything about photography.
People like the creamy bokeh.
Great video! I also shoot with the 5D mkIV with no plans on switching
Holy crap those film photos are insane! 🤯
She would LOVE the EOS R with all those beautiful EF lenses! I'm so jealous lmao. Hoping to get an RP soon
Today I was like "hmm what Jessica would buy.." and here we are, thank you for this video.
"nightmares get in the way" Jessica 2020
Been shooting big heavy cameras for over 25 years - last year I bought a Sony A7 - shot for 6 months with it and then sold it - it was like holding a toy. Now back with my Canon - but a 5d Mark iii now.
Lol who's been hating on her for using a dslr still, most professionals still use Dslrs over mirrorless cameras.
ollie lane all the hate is a good way to convince myself I need to upgrade from the 5Div to an R5 😆
(I doubt it)
In any case I have to call bullshit on some portion of this given the flagrant disconnect between the mirrorless-clueless + holding a 24-105 RF zoom form mirrorless. Really??? Really really, you just found a mirrorless canon lens in the street one day? You bought it because you thought it was for a 5D?? Yea... right....
Love the video. I also bought 5 used lens of 6 that I own 👍🏻
With a good ef lens collection like that ,the only mirrorless option is a Eos R
Thats a low blow. It wasn't necessary.
Great tips when investing on lenses. I owned prime sigma 35mm 1.4 and macro 100mm 2.8L IS for events. Also used 85mm 1.4 such incredible lens. Love your work
I feel you. Still in love with my archaic Nikon D700 + old 35mm
Me too Jessica best camera ever. 24-70 also a great lens.
I do recommend testing out the mirrorless SET UP. A very lightweight set up without compromising quality. You would enjoy it!
Jefferson Pichinte DSLR quality will always be superior to mirrorless
Quality of images?
What is your second camera? Also 5d Mark IV or you go out only with one camera? If not, which focal length you use normally at a wedding on first and which focal length on second camera? On a reportage job ich have mostly 24mm at first and 70-200mm or 85mm at second camera.
i think it would be cool to see a video from you comparing the 50 1.2 vs the 50 1.4
Hey Jessica(or anyone that can answer for me please), I have a question for you. If you have a 24-70 lens, why would you need a 50mm lens? Isn't 50 in the range of 24-70? why spend the money for another lens if its in the range of another lens?
My question exactly
A prime lens (50mm) has a different mechanism than a zoom lens (24-70mm). Also, those she has are different aperture - prime is wider, faster at f/1.2 than her zoom at f/2.8. Wider aperture will give greater low light performance and bokeh.
What are your thoughts on Fujifilm cameras? Or a good mirrorless cameras for beginners.
Manisha if you want value for money you can’t go wrong with an xt30. The lenses are pricey but there are some affordable ones especially on eBay. But body only and then but the kit lens for cheap it’s really good
Would love to see a video of like "street" photography from home using the 70-300mm! Seeing what can be seen from quarantine
Jordan Vanderlinden me too, I just got that lens yesterday and would love to see what others do with it.
Thanks for all you do for us.
Big fan of yours from Japan! I am using 5d markiii and the same 24-70! I hope someday I can greet with you somewhere.
When shooting a wedding or similar events, how often do you find yourself changing lenses? I am always curious about that !
Can you make video on post production about colour grading one of your resent photos please
👏 good to see a photographer not caring and lusting over the newest gear available.
The 5D IV and the 85 f/1.4L are not that old, Btw...
Alex Verbeke talking about her mindset not the camera
Regarding the 2 versions of the 85mm, I am also hesitant about which one to buy. Actually, I found some reviews where they said that the 1.4's image quality is better than the 1.2. So I think I will also choose the 1.4
I have the 85/1.2. Yes the 1.4 does have better image quality but the 1.2 look is unique.
My Canon 5D mark IV just came in the mail today! Can't wait to try it 😬
Zaina Salem Nice!! I’m using the eos R but there’s something about the DSLR that I miss, I had the 5d III, I still have the 16-35f2.8 iii and 70-200 f2.8 III and i haven’t sold them cause I keep thinking about buying a 5div just so I can have that feeling
That 70-300mm would be great for some outdoor sports shots, like tennis, bball, baseball.
I'm with you on still using my dinosaur cameras! My dinosaur is still sufficient for all the shoots I've done.
Great video Jessica, me too, I have the 5D mk4, It's an amazing camera for my nightscape photography , and I don't plan anytime soon to switch to fullframe mirorless. Next time, it would be great if you can do a video about the gear you use to filming your RUclips video, thanks.
